December 26 th : Psalm 148 Psalm Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights! 2 Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host! 3 Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars! 4 Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! 5 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he commanded and they were created. 6 He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.[a] 7 Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps, 8 fire and hail, snow and frost, stormy wind fulfilling his command! 9 Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! 10 Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds! 11 Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! 12 Young men and women alike, old and young together! 13 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven. 14 He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his faithful, for the people of Israel who are close to him. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord Jesus was born! God sent us his son to walk with us, teach us, and befriend us. He helped many people know God for the first time, or in a new light. He came and saved us from our sins. We rejoice for all he did for us, and for all that God gave us through him. It is important that we remember all the things Jesus did for us, and rejoice in that knowledge. Christmas is a time to praise God for the amazing gift he gave us. As we think of all of the gifts we receive during the holidays, whether physical or spiritual, let us also remember the ultimate gift from God. Many people still do not believe in God, and many people (as a recent study found) are starting to lose their faith. Try and use your knowledge of God to help others know God. Help those around you, whether their needs are visible, invisible, major, or minor. Spread the word and the good deeds even as after this Christmas season. Everyone could use a friend, and everyone can benefit from knowing God.

December 27 th : Colossians 3: As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13 Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord[a] has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ[b] dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.[c] 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. In this passage God s children are given 4 guidelines for a way to live our lives. First: clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Jesus is a great example for how to do all of these things. He always welcomed those who needed help, those who were looked down on, and those who others walked past. Simply put, Jesus helped those who needed it most even when no one else wanted to. We need to follow Jesus footsteps. If you see someone who needs help, help them. Be kind to those around you even if they might not be as kind back. Treat them like they are human who is one of God s children. Even if you do not know them, realize they have a story just like you do, and they deserve to be treated as one of God s children just like you. The passage also says to Forgive each other. Like I said we are all humans, we all make mistakes, and we all, at some point, are going to do something that hurts someone else whether we intend to or not. We need to forgive each other for the things we have done to each other, especially the small things. Forgiveness is never easy, and some actions are easier to forgive than others, however, God forgives us our sins, so shouldn t we be able to forgive each other? We are also told to Clothe yourself with love. This statement is prefaced with above all because in order to forgive those around you and in order to have compassion and kindness, you need to love others and yourself. Kindness also comes from a deep love within you. If you love those around you it will be much easier to be kind, compassionate and forgiving to everyone. Lastly we are told, Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts the word of Christ dwell in you richly. If you remember God s words to us in this passage, and remember how Jesus treated others it will be much easier to accomplish the three above tasks. If you are struggling with any of these things always remember God is with you, ask him to give you the strength to act in the way he asks of us. December 28 th : Isaiah 54: Sing, O barren one who did not bear; burst into song and shout, you who have not been in labor! For the children of the desolate woman will be more than the children of her that is married, says the Lord. 2 Enlarge the site of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out;

do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes. 3 For you will spread out to the right and to the left, and your descendants will possess the nations and will settle the desolate towns. 4 Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed; do not be discouraged, for you will not suffer disgrace; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and the disgrace of your widowhood you will remember no more. 5 For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name; the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called. 6 For the Lord has called you like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, like the wife of a man s youth when she is cast off, says your God. 7 For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with great compassion I will gather you. 8 In overflowing wrath for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you, says the Lord, your Redeemer. 9 This is like the days of Noah to me: Just as I swore that the waters of Noah would never again go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you and will not rebuke you. 10 For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

11 O afflicted one, storm-tossed, and not comforted, I am about to set your stones in antimony, and lay your foundations with sapphires.[a] 12 I will make your pinnacles of rubies, your gates of jewels, and all your wall of precious stones. 13 All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the prosperity of your children. How often have you asked for forgiveness from someone? A Friend, spouse, child, or even from God? Usually in an apology we admit we have done something wrong, maybe we give a reason, and then promise it will not happen again or give some way we plan on fixing it. In Isaiah 54: 7 God seems to be admitting that he was wrong in the past. For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with great compassion I will gather you. In overflowing wrath for a moment I hid my face from you, but with ever lasting love I will have compassion on you God is admitting to his people that he got angry, and that he was not there for them when he should have been, but he is also promising to not do that again. Because of this we can all have faith that God is with us always. We know he does not answer our prayers the way we want all the time, but he has promised his children to never abandon them again. He also promises in Isaiah 54: 9 so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you and will not rebuke you. And it continues in verse 10 with: My steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed. God promises to not react the way he has in the past out of anger at our sins, he proves this by sending us Jesus to die for our sins. He has promised to love us and care for us always even when we sin. December 29 th : 1 Corinthians 3: According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw 13 the work of each builder will become visible, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each has done. 14 If what has been built on the foundation survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If the work is burned up, the builder will suffer loss; the builder will be saved, but only as through fire. 16 Do you not know that you are God s temple and that God s Spirit dwells in you?[a] 17 If anyone destroys God s temple, God will destroy that person. For God s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

When you are born God gives you the gift of being one of his children. Whether you grew up in the church or found your faith on your own, each new thing we learn about God continues to build on this foundation that has been laid for us. When we build our foundation with God we have the most solid foundation we can stand on. However, each person you meet gives you something to build more of your foundation. Weather it is a new experience, finding a new hobby you love, helping you learn more about yourself, or helping you learn more about God. It could be your family, friends, strangers, acquaintances, or anyone who comes into contact with you. Some of them will give you solid trustworthy material, like friendship, support, knowledge of God, or loyalty, to use in building more of your foundation. Some of the material you are given may be flimsy or weak maybe when someone is not honest with us or tries to turn us away from God. In verse 13 it states the fire will test what sort of work each has done and in 15 If the work is burned up, the builder will suffer loss; the builder will be saved. If some gives you weak materials it will fall apart when tested. Some of your foundation you have built will crumble. However, the passage also says that after it is all burnt up the builder will be saved. God will be there to catch you, whether it was a friend, a family member, a false belief, or anything else that caused the materials to crumble, God is still the strongest foundation laid for your life, and he will be there to hold you up. December 30 th : 2 Chronicles 1: That night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, Ask what I should give you. 8 Solomon said to God, You have shown great and steadfast love to my father David, and have made me succeed him as king. 9 O Lord God, let your promise to my father David now be fulfilled, for you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth. 10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge to go out and come in before this people, for who can rule this great people of yours? 11 God answered Solomon, Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, and have not even asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may rule my people over whom I have made you king, 12 wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. I will also give you riches, possessions, and honor, such as none of the kings had who were before you, and none after you shall have the like. 13 So Solomon came from[a] the high place at Gibeon, from the tent of meeting, to Jerusalem. And he reigned over Israel. Solomon asks the Lord to help him be a good king to his people. God replies giving him knowledge, wisdom, riches, possessions, and honor because Solomon did not ask for selfish things. He asked only for God s help in being the best king for those around him. What kinds of things do you ask God for? Are they selfish or selfless? God wants to help his children, he wants to give them gifts, and he wants to be there for him. However, God also wants us to help others. If we are all continually asking for more money for ourselves when we clearly have enough or to win ever single game we ever participate in, we are not focusing on those around us. However, if we ask for the healing or safety of those around us we are focusing on more than just our needs.

December 31 st : Psalm 147: Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem! 13 Praise your God, O Zion! For he strengthens the bars of your gates; 14 he blesses your children within you. He grants peace[a] within your borders; 15 he fills you with the finest of wheat. He sends out his command to the earth; 16 his word runs swiftly. He gives snow like wool; 17 he scatters frost like ashes. He hurls down hail like crumbs 18 who can stand before his cold? He sends out his word, and melts them; 19 he makes his wind blow, and the waters flow. He declares his word to Jacob, 20 his statutes and ordinances to Israel. He has not dealt thus with any other nation; they do not know his ordinances. Praise the Lord! Have you taken down all of your decorations? Are all of the leftovers eaten? Has your family (finally?) gone home? Has the feeling of the holidays (to me a magical feeling of deep joy inside of me) started to fade? It has been almost a week since the big day of Christmas, but we are still praising the Lord! We still thank him everyday for giving us Jesus, and for giving us everything we need. He tells us what he wants from us, and all he really asks in return is that we praise him, listen to him when he speaks to us, and share the good news that is Jesus. Christmas is over, but God s promises have not ended. We need to make sure our work for God does not end either.

January 1 st : Philippians 2:5-11, 5 Let the same mind be in you that was[a] in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. When God came to earth as Jesus he did so to live with us, but to also experience what it was like to be human. He easily could have put himself in a place that made life super easy, and gave him the power to teach everyone about God (or I guess himself), but instead he decided to come as a human who lived like a lot of people had to live. He also in becoming human became like a slave. He listened to everything God told him to do even though it ultimately led to his painful torture and death. He completely gave himself up for those around him. He traveled telling anyone who would listen about the Glory of God. He helped people understand what it means to be a follower of God, and what it means to be God s children. Through him we learn that God loves us even when we sin, but we also learn how to be a moral person. Jesus showed us what it means to be children of God. Jesus showed people what faith in God s promises looks like both in his own time, and for us now. So many people continue to hear the stories of Jesus or see our faith in action, and believe in God. For these reasons Jesus was the ultimate follower (disciple) of God.

January 2 nd : James 3: Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. 16 For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for[a] those who make peace. Are you ever annoyed with someone all the time? Or it just seems every single thing they do gets on your nerves more and more? How often do you look at someone else or what someone else has and feel some kind of envy or even dislike for them simply because they have something you don t? Maybe you feel they do not deserve it, or do not cherish what they have. Have you ever wanted something so bad you were willing to do anything for it, even if it meant hurting others (mentally or physically) to get to it? When we have selfish, unforgiving, mean thoughts they seem to only lead to bad things in our lives. I find whenever I have feelings like this if I do not try and turn it into a positive thought my whole attitude turns into a negative spiral. If I find one person annoying and I focus on it, everything that person, or even anyone around me, does is annoying. On the other hand if I turn from the negative thoughts and try and focus on something positive, I find it much easier to continue thinking positively throughout the day. The times when we think negatively or have negative feelings our behavior is not coming following how God wants us to act, but we show we are following God when we are able to have peaceful, loving, positive thoughts. January 3 rd : Jeremiah 31:7-14, 7For thus says the Lord: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, Save, O Lord, your people, the remnant of Israel. 8 See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, those with child and those in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. 9 With weeping they shall come, and with consolations[a] I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble;

for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. 10 Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands far away; say, He who scattered Israel will gather him, and will keep him as a shepherd a flock. 11 For the Lord has ransomed Jacob, and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him. 12 They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion, and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord, over the grain, the wine, and the oil, and over the young of the flock and the herd; their life shall become like a watered garden, and they shall never languish again. 13 Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy, I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow. 14 I will give the priests their fill of fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my bounty, says the Lord. This passage tells us that God is going to gather all of His children together into one place. His children are not perfect, but they praise Him and know Him as their God. The place described is a place where everyone will be happy. Everyone will join together and praise God. Is this place heaven, where, ultimately, we will all be together again in the presence of God? Or is this place on earth? Is God s goal to have all of his children together while on earth? Or is his idea of gathering everyone together not physical, but literal through his word? God can bring us all together by being there with all of us and by giving us the connection of his word. The passage talks about God giving us happiness instead of sad ness, and what it sounds like to me is all things good. Do we need to be in heaven for that to happen? I do not think so. God gives us all things good even here on earth. God gathers us together in his word so that we can connect with other children of God, he gives us good things on earth because he loves us, and he brings us to him in heaven so that we can have eternal life with him.

January 4 th : Isaiah 6:1-5; 6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 And one called to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory. 4 The pivots[a] on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. 5 And I said: Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts! I find it very interesting that our common day depiction of angels is a glowing white robed being, often times a woman, with 2 wings, yet in this reading the angels (Seraphs) have 6 wings and we are not really told what they look like. Throughout the years this image we see was created. How else have humans taken things from the bible and morph them? Maybe it isn t so much the ideas or stories are changed, but the context is often not included when people try and use the bible to argue a belief. So often people try and pull a passage from the bible without any background information or even the surrounding passages. Obviously this can be detrimental to the message of the bible. Words and phrases can be taken out verse by verse and pieced together to tell us one story, when, in reality, the message that is actually being given is something completely different. I do not think this is something we can stop from happening, and even if we tried to stop it, it would be really difficult to have to preface every quote from the bible with the background and the context. However, I do think it is important that we educate ourselves on the bible so that we can think critically about what is being said when someone quotes the bible. January 5 th : John 1: He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own,[a] and his own people did not accept him. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father s only son,[b] full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified to him and cried out, This was he of whom I said, He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me. ) 16 From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son,[c] who is close to the Father s heart,[d] who has made him known. How uplifting are these versus? Jesus was able to use his words to bring people together. He brought knowledge to the children of God. He lived with his people, taught his people, and continues to show us all the glory of God. He brought power to those who were powerless, and he continues to do so for so many people in the world. We have seen his glory. This statement is true even today.

We listen in church to the amazing stories about Jesus. We re here every week because we believe in him and what he did. Although we have not physically seen the miracles Jesus preformed we feel them in our hearts. We know that God is with us always, and we are able to take what Jesus did and try and replicated as best we can in the way we treat and help others. January 6 th : Matthew 2: In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men[a] from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising,[b] and have come to pay him homage. 3 When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah[c] was to be born. 5 They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 6 And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd[d] my people Israel. 7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men[e] and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. 9 When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising,[f] until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw that the star had stopped,[g] they were overwhelmed with joy. 11 On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. The three wise men follow a star in the sky and to find a child. If God came to you in a dream with this mission, would you have went on a search for the child? Would you have even believed that it was a message from God? I feel like so many times I wake up from a dream and share the details with my roommate so we can laugh about how crazy it is. If I had a dream that felt like a sign from God, I may be a little freaked out, but I m not even sure that I would recognize or even want to believe that it was a message from God. We are deceived in so many ways, by the government, the Internet, and the media. I bet not many people would be able to recognize a message from God if they saw one. Now pretend that you finally decided to follow that star, would you have believed this child is the King of the Jews? I do not think many people would believe in Jesus. A lot of people in his own time already did not believe when he said he was the Son of God. However, these Wise men believed the messages they were getting from God and they listened to it. Although Jesus would have been the King of the Jews whether the three wise men never showed up at all, they were the first ones to seek him out and find him, all because they followed a sign from God.
