1 Meeting and Experiencing God As Jehovah-Jireh The LORD Provides Genesis 22: After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham! And he said, Here I am. 2 He said, Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you. 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you. 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, My father! And he said, Here I am, my son. He said, Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8 Abraham said, God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son. So they went both of them together. 9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham! And he said, Here I am. 12 He said, Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me. 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, The LORD will provide ; as it is said to this day, On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided. We have been studying the names of God now for several months. Exodus 6:3 indicates that God is known by His name. To know God s name is to know God. God s great desire to reveal Himself to man Jesus in Bethlehem. God is honored and glorified by men knowing Him. God seeks such to worship Him. Elohim God This name speaks of His Personality (He is all we need, He has all we need and He is doing all we need done.) Genesis 1

2 El Elyon God The Most High God This name speaks of His Position (He is both Sovereign and Supreme in Position and Power.) Genesis 14:17-20 El Roi - He is the God Who Sees. 3 Historical Background of Jehovah Jireh (Gen. 22) A. Everything and every event of Abraham s life leads up to this event. 1. He waited for the promise child 2. Now fulfilled and settled down B. Imagine Abraham s feeling that are not recorded C. This incident reveals: Abraham s obedience and faith Isaac s willing submission Jehovah s gracious provision of a substitute D. Jireh a transliteration of a Hebrew word A word that means to see or to appear Latin video - vision - to see Provision - I ll see to it.. In Gen 22:8 same word jireh provide God will see to it God will see for Himself a lamb for a burnt offering Vs. 14 So, That is, God s provision shall be seen Our Heavenly Father sees our need and with divine foresight of love prepares the supply. He sees to a need to supply it and in the seeing, He is seen. In the Providing, He manifest Himself. Abraham was being tested. He past the test and His naming of the place reminds us: Of a great deliverance A constant reminder of the Wonderful grace of Jehovah. Abraham loved his son as flesh and blood, but was willingly obedient and God saw it. When Did God Provide or show the substitute Vs At the last Moment The moment of desperation Moment of greatest commitment total obedience Vs. 11 God speaks.abraham listens

4 Vs. 12 Seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son. from Me. Could have added. Even as I will not withhold my only and well beloved Son as the great provision for man s redemption. The chief lesson: The deliverance of Isaac through the provision of a substitute. Further Significance of This Name Lies in the expectation of something yet to come. will provide Abraham s testimony was Jehovah is a God Who always provides And as He provided, then He would provide in the future As it is said to this day Vs Abraham sees in this statement a prediction not only Jehovah doth provide : But Jehovah will provide.. What was the provision that Abraham say.. Maybe dimly but by faith Abraham and the numerous altars and sacrifices The reality of sin The need for atonement. Why the demand of Isaac as an offering? To impress upon Abraham more deeply the temporary character of these sacrifices Hebrews 10:4 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats should take away sin - only shadows or types Isaac is exhibited as a pattern of one under the Judgement of God for Sin. 5 Have you surrendered it to God? If God takes it, am I trusting Him to Replace it with what He knows is best? Notice Abraham did not speak of his agony or his test, or his faith or even of his obedience. But He pointed to Jehovah The One Who Provides..
