Available to All Acts 15:6-11, Lesson for December 16-17, 2017 Brad Goad One of the more popular and recognizable Christmas Songs is Joy to the World written by Isaac Watts in the early 1700 s. Ironically it was based on his own paraphrase of Psalm 98 and was focused more on the Second Coming of the Messiah, more so than the First Coming in Bethlehem. Nevertheless, it has become a Christmas Standard. Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Tis the Season for Joy to the World This is the week before Christmas which means many folks will be traveling to Grandmothers house or In-Laws, Extended Family, etc. It is supposed to be a Happy Time.a Time of Celebration.Songs Presents.Food Laughter. And yet, often it becomes a time of Contention...a Time of Arguments a Time of Disagreements. And as a result some people would like to Fast Forward through the Proverbial Holidays, rather than face the Conflict head on. However we all know that can t happen, no matter how hard we try. We have to Journey Forward, take a deep breath and keep moving forward step by step, even during this season. Today we continue the study of Acts and as we have seen the past couple of weeks Paul is on a Journey. In fact we call these chapters of Acts Paul s Missionary Journey s (1, 2 and 3). Paul set out to do exactly what Jesus had challenged His Apostles to do in Acts 1:8. You will be empowered by the Holy Spirit and be Witnesses.in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the uttermost parts of the earth. With that kind of challenge coming from the Risen Lord Jesus Christ; it should be a time of Power and Victory and yet it became a time of dissension and debate. Sound familiar?. In the first Century, during the early years of the Church.Christianity was growing. The Growth of Christianity was beyond Borders, Cultures and even Languages. It was doing exactly what Jesus had prayed for.exactly what Jesus had prepared the Apostles for and exactly what Jesus had Charged His Disciples and Apostles to do in spreading the Message of Christ, the Risen Messiah. for Good News for Changed Lives Tis the Season for the Holy Spirit Tis the Season for the Growing Pains of the early Church for Conflict, Contention and Controversy. Let s look at this Season of Christianity. Acts: 15:1-2 Some men came down from Judea and began teaching the brethren, unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved 2 And when Paul and Barnabas had great dissension and debate with them, the brethren determined that Paul and Barnabas and some others of them should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders concerning this issue. 1

It should come as no surprise to anyone that something like this occurred, even early on in church history, to what some would call the Glory Days of the church. Whenever you put people together, contention happens. People have opinions that differ from others. Now Paul and Barnabas had just returned from their 1 st Missionary Journey. They were excited about what had taken place and the lives that were changed because of the Gospel. Remember what Gospel means? Good News. They were excited because they were able to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with people who had never heard the Good News. It seems like it would be a Time to Celebrate.a Time to Reflect.a Time to be Thankful. Tis the Season for Church Growth and Changed Lives! Joy to the World! And yet.the Excitement didn t last long. There was not a Celebration that broke out in the city. In fact there was an argument. Vs. 1 Some men came down from Judea..we don t know who these people were by name or reputation. However we do know they had Opinions.Strong Opinions. They made it very clear, Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved Not a lot of wiggle room there.no gray area.strictly black and white cut and dry (no pun intended). On the surface we might be quick to judge their view as wrong. Spoiler Alert: It is. But what they were saying was deeper than a surgical procedure. How one understood the place of circumcision in the church defined how a person saw Israel and the Mosaic Law in relation to the new covenant. (Swindoll s Living Insights New Testament Commentary, ACTS, pg. 292) These people were struggling with the fact that Christianity was not only available to ALL people, but that it was so simple and seemingly without any sort of sacrifice. For the traditional Jews from early childhood they had learned about the Covenant of Abraham the Covenant of Israel the Covenant of David. They had learned about the Sacrificial Systems, the Feasts (including Passover), the plan and the purpose of the Tabernacle and Priests. All of these things were represented by Circumcision for the males, generation after generation for centuries after centuries. Jews who were now following Jesus had that background that training that knowledge and the male Jews following Jesus had already had that procedure, which the Men of God in the Old Testament also had as a symbol of being set apart for the one true God. But Gentiles had no background no training no knowledge of that history..but they had access to the same salvation through Jesus Christ as the traditional Jews. These Unnamed Men were teaching that Salvation can t be that Easy.Salvation can t be that Accessible.Salvation can t be that Free. And for Paul and Barnabas, as well as others we will see.those are Fightin words. 2

Tis the Season Acts 15: 2 And when Paul and Barnabas had great dissension and debate with them, the brethren determined that Paul and Barnabas and some others of them should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders concerning this issue. Great Dissension and Debate The literal Greek Translation is No Small Argument and Debate, hence the NASB translates it Great Dissension. The picture paints a picture of something that was unified but is now torn apart, divided in two. Perhaps that could describe last month s Thanksgiving Dinner or what you have to look forward to next week for Christmas in your family. Tis the Season Paul and Barnabas stood up for what they believed to be right.they stood up for the Gospel, exactly how it was taught by Jesus Christ. The Circumcision Group posed some valid issues if you look beyond the surface..however it contradicted the bottom line teaching of Jesus Christ. In response to this Great Dissension and Debate..they formed a delegation consisting of Paul, Barnabas, and some others, sending them to Jerusalem for a theological ruling.come to be known historically as The Jerusalem Council. So Paul and Barnabas and some other of them went to Jerusalem.by land rather than sea. They traveled what would be over 300 miles and apparently along the way they did what they had grown accustomed to do..they shared the Good News! They told about the Changed Lives of those who had come to Believe in and Follow Jesus Christ; especially the Gentiles. So even in the midst of Great Debate and Dissension; in the middle of Controversy and Contention; something interesting happened. Look at verse 3 Acts. 15: 3 When they had been sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, explaining in detail the conversion of the Gentiles and they created great joy among all the brothers. Tis the Season. Joy to the World. Paul and Barnabas did not deny the Controversy. They did not deny the Contention. They did not ignore the Great Debate or the Dissension; but they also did not let it Dominate their Attitudes. They were not going to stop spreading the Good News because of this obstacle, this challenge. As they were traveling to Jerusalem they were spreading Joy! I love how the HCSB says it, They created great joy among all the believers. Two Greek Words: Mega Chara = Great Joy 3

In this Season..in 2017.with what we have been through the last 12 months as a country as a culture.what an opportunity we have to Create Joy among all the believers. To Stand Up for Jesus Christ and let the Good News be exactly what it was created to be In and Out of Season.the Good News.Joy to the World.the Lord has Come! John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He GAVE His only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have Everlasting Life. Tis the Season for Joy.Joy to the World! God loved the World (both Jews and Gentiles) so much that He GAVE (and that is what season is about Giving)..Gave his Only Son (born in a manger in Bethlehem) Whoever (both Jews and Gentiles Rich and Poor.Educated or Uneducated.English speaking and Non-English speaking).whoever believes in Him will not Perish but have Everlasting Life! That s the Good News Joy to the World. That Creates Joy this Season. We all have challenges and obstacles that can sidetrack us this time of year. We have family members that don t understand why we spend time at the church on the weekends, going to Worship and Bible Study. They don t understand why we give time and money to help so many others who are in need through the avenue of the local church..this is nothing new. In Acts 15 we see this kind of misunderstanding and contention up close and personal. Let s pick up the story in vs. 4. Acts 15: 4 When they arrived at Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they reported all that God had done with them. 5 But some of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed stood up, saying, It is necessary to circumcise them and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses. After traveling 300 miles..and creating Great Joy along the way..upon arrival in Jerusalem they heard the same words from the Pharisees, which had always been a thorn in the flesh of Christianity. But notice that in the midst of the controversy they all came together to look into this matter. Acts 15: 6 The apostles and the elders came together to look into this matter. 7 After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, Brethren, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; 9 and He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. 10 Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? 11 But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are. Peter who had been a fisherman when he first met Jesus and became a Shepherd who tended the flock of Jesus stood up with confidence and boldness. Peter had experienced the Grace of Jesus Christ on a very personal level on more than one occasion. Perhaps the most famous was when he denied even knowing Jesus 3 times after Jesus had been arrested on the night He was betrayed. Peter had learned from Jesus first-hand about faith (vs. 9) and grace (vs. 11). In his brief speech Peter was fulfilling what God had empowered him to do speaking the truth of the gospel to all, including Gentiles. Peter reminded them that God knows the heart; it isn t the outside that counts, but the heart of the person. No longer was it about physical circumcision, rather now it was about circumcision of the heart; cleansing their hearts by faith. (vs. 9) 4

Peter then challenged them about putting God to the test. This is the Greek word pirazo which is the same word used in Matthew 4 when Jesus was tempted by the Devil. Peter is not holding back, challenging them on why they would want to test God in this manner about the yoke which Jesus said the following. Matthew 11: 28 Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. The Goal of Jesus Christ was to Ease the Yoke and Lighten the Burden. In short, there is Freedom with Jesus! Sadly there were and are Christians who want to Increase the Burden and Intensify the Yoke whether it be through legalism, tradition or added rules like the Pharisees had been known to do for years. Peter wanted to make sure that didn t happen. The focus was to be on Salvation through Faith and Grace for all people. Peter closes his comments emphatically with the reality there is no distinction between Jews and Gentiles. Acts 15: 11 But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are. And the most remarkable thing happened when Peter finished speaking..silence. There was not further argument there was not further dissention there was not further debate. Apparently after Peter spoke, he passed the baton to Paul and Barnabas Acts 15: 12 All the people kept silent, and they were listening to Barnabas and Paul as they were relating what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles. Notice the attention is what God is doing through them among the Gentiles. This was exactly what Jesus had intended.for the Gospel (Good News) to be shared with ALL people. We don t know the specifics of what they said, simply that they shared the signs and wonders which no doubt brought Joy to the world of those folks. After they finished sharing those stories, James (the half-brother of Jesus and writer of the book of James) steps up to the proverbial podium and speaks. Acts 15: 13 After they had stopped speaking, James answered, saying, Brethren, listen to me. 14 Simeon has related how God first concerned Himself about taking from among the Gentiles a people for His name. 15 With this the words of the Prophets agree, just as it is written, 16 AFTER THESE THINGS I will return, AND I WILL REBUILD THE TABERNACLE OF DAVID WHICH HAS FALLEN, AND I WILL REBUILD ITS RUINS, AND I WILL RESTORE IT, 17 SO THAT THE REST OF MANKIND MAY SEEK THE LORD, AND ALL THE GENTILES WHO ARE CALLED BY MY NAME, 18 SAYS THE LORD, WHO MAKES THESE THINGS KNOWN FROM LONG AGO. 19 Therefore it is my judgment that we do not trouble those who are turning to God from among the Gentiles, 20 but that we write to them that they abstain from things contaminated by idols and from fornication and from what is strangled and from blood. 21 For Moses from ancient generations has in every city those who preach him, since he is read in the synagogues every Sabbath. James quotes from the book of Amos.showing these people gathered in Jerusalem, this Council, that even the Prophets (Jews) recognized that God s Salvation was for the Gentiles (any who are non-jewish). 5

In James judgement they should not trouble those who are turning to God by forcing circumcision upon them, rather let s take this opportunity to encourage them and teach them some basics. They came together and compiled a letter (vss ) Acts 15: 22 Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren, 23 and they sent this letter by them, The apostles and the brethren who are elders, to the brethren in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia who are from the Gentiles, greetings. 24 Since we have heard that some of our number to whom we gave no instruction have disturbed you with their words, unsettling your souls, 25 it seemed good to us, having become of one mind, to select men to send to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we have sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will also report the same things by word of mouth. 28 For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these essentials: 29 that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication; if you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well. Farewell. Tis the Season for Joy, Freedom, Faith, Grace and Encouragement. The letter wasn t life shattering or overly exciting and yet it was given in such a manner and temperament that showed concern and compassion. Let s see what happens when they arrive back in Antioch where it all started. Acts 15: 30 So when they were sent away, they went down to Antioch; and having gathered the congregation together, they delivered the letter. 31 When they had read it, they rejoiced because of its encouragement. Did you catch what happened when they read the letter? They Rejoiced because of its encouragement. The Greek word there is the same root word used in vs. 3 but instead of 2 words together it is simply one word for rejoice ; literally it means exceeding joy For the early Christians it was not always easy. There was definitely challenges and obstacles. There was debate and dissension. There was conflict and contention. In the midst of all that, there was agreement. In Essentials Unity, in Non-Essentials Liberty, in All Things Charity. Tis the Season The Song Issac Watts wrote 3 centuries ago holds as true today as it did then. And how appropriate for us with this particular lesson. Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, (Jews and Gentiles alike.all people) And heav n and nature sing, And heav n and nature sing, And heav n, and heav n, and nature sing Isaac Watts wrote the lyrics, but it was Lowell Mason from Boston who wrote the tune and the name of the tune was Antioch. The result is a favorite Christmas hymn based on an Old Testament psalm, set to musical fragments composed in England, and pieced together across the Atlantic in the United States! A great representation of Joy to the World.exactly what Peter, Paul, Barnabas and James were talking about and from Jerusalem to Antioch both Jews and Gentiles experienced Joy to the World through the Salvation of Jesus Christ by Faith and Grace. 6
