Isaiah The final racle - Tyre Tyre is an ancient Phenician city n the cast f the Med Tday it s part f suthern cast f Lebann It s a city that began n the mainland Later it mved t an ff shre island abut a half mile away It was a heavy prtected and frtified city Tyre was a seaprt f wrldwide imprtance in its day It was the principle seaprt fr shps traveling between Palestine and the western wrld Tyrians were a sea-ging peple with a large fleet and they clnized many ther cities arund the Med and beynd Is. 23:1 The racle cncerning Tyre. Wail, O ships f Tarshish, Fr Tyre is destryed, withut huse r harbr; It is reprted t them frm the land f Cyprus. Is. 23:2 Be silent, yu inhabitants f the castland, Yu merchants f Sidn; Yur messengers crssed the sea Is. 23:3 And were n many waters. The grain f the Nile, the harvest f the River was her revenue; And she was the market f natins. Is. 23:4 Be ashamed, O Sidn; Fr the sea speaks, the strnghld f the sea, saying, I have neither travailed nr given birth, I have neither brught up yung men nr reared virgins. Is. 23:5 When the reprt reaches Egypt, They will be in anguish at the reprt f Tyre. Is. 23:6 Pass ver t Tarshish; Wail, O inhabitants f the castland. 2 Isaiah 23-25! 2 Is. 23:8 Wh has planned this against Tyre, the bestwer f crwns, Whse merchants were princes, whse traders were the hnred f the earth? Is. 23:9 The LORD f hsts has planned it, t defile the pride f all beauty, T despise all the hnred f the earth. Is. 23:10 Overflw yur land like the Nile, O daughter f Tarshish, There is n mre restraint. Is. 23:11 He has stretched His hand ut ver the sea, He has made the kingdms tremble; The LORD has given a cmmand cncerning Canaan t demlish its strnghlds. Is. 23:12 He has said, Yu shall exult n mre, O crushed virgin daughter f Sidn. Arise, pass ver t Cyprus; even there yu will find n rest. Is. 23:13 Behld, the land f the Chaldeans this is the peple which was nt; Assyria appinted it fr desert creatures they erected their siege twers, they stripped its palaces, they made it a ruin. Is. 23:14 Wail, O ships f Tarshish, Fr yur strnghld is destryed. The racle begins annuncing Tyre s judgment in a curius way The ships f Tyre are dcked in Cyprus when they will hear that their hme city and prt are gne They are called the ships f Tarshish because Tyre had used it s ships t fund multiple clnies in different places arund the wrld all called Tarshish The inhabitants f the castland are silenced Isaiah calls them merchants f Sidn, anther Phenician city Messengers that crssed the sea Tyre was the market f natins, the place that grain f the Nile left fr sale in ther prts Bringing revenue back t Egypt Tyre is t be ashamed f their fate, such that the sea is even unwilling t admit they ever existed In v.5 Egypt is anguished t hear f Tyre s passing Making her demise all the mre remarkable is her lng histry The city had existed fr abut 2,300 years by Isaiah s day 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 23-25! 3 Isaiah asks in v.8 wh planned this event? The Lrd planned it T defile the pride f beauty and t despise the hnred f the earth Then in v.13 we re given the surce f their destructin The Chaldeans, the Babylnians Isaiah adds a parenthetical explanatin f hw it culd be the Babylnians In Isaiah s day the Assyrians had cnquered the kingdm f Babyln This was an earlier Babylnian kingdm In abut 100 years, the Babylnians wuld rise again and defeat the Assyrians Later they wuld destry Tyre But in Isaiah s day the idea that Babyln culd be a threat t anyne seemed impssible, since they were vanquished by the Assyrians Then a curius turn Is. 23:15 Nw in that day Tyre will be frgtten fr seventy years like the days f ne king. At the end f seventy years it will happen t Tyre as in the sng f the harlt: Is. 23:16 Take yur harp, walk abut the city, O frgtten harlt; Pluck the strings skillfully, sing many sngs, That yu may be remembered. Is. 23:17 It will cme abut at the end f seventy years that the LORD will visit Tyre. Then she will g back t her harlt s wages and will play the harlt with all the kingdms n the face f the earth. Is. 23:18 Her gain and her harlt s wages will be set apart t the LORD; it will nt be stred up r harded, but her gain will becme sufficient fd and chice attire fr thse wh dwell in the presence f the LORD. After the Babylnians capture Tyre and disperse the peple, a perid f seventy years will ensure Gd states that the city must remain deslate fr 70 years 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 23-25! 4 Why seventy years? Interestingly, Judah suffers a similar fate, being exiled fr 70 years while in captivity t the same Babylnians The 70 year perid makes clear that Gd s hand is upn the judgment It s by His design, nt chance Then after the 70 years, the Lrd visits Tyre, in the sense that He takes up actin again in the city He permits it t return t its prfitable business f trading with the wrld Isaiah cmpares this trade t playing the harlt, selling itself ut t be able t d business with the wrld If we wnder why the Lrd wuld permit the iniquity f the city t re-emerge, He has his reasns His answer in v.18 is that Tyre s wages wuld becme the financing vehicle fr Gd s peple and fr the Temple We see this happen 70 years after the Babylnian destructin f Tyre and Jerusalem, just as Isaiah predicted Ezra 3:1 Nw when the seventh mnth came, and the sns f Israel were in the cities, the peple gathered tgether as ne man t Jerusalem. Ezra 3:2 Then Jeshua the sn f Jzadak and his brthers the priests, and Zerubbabel the sn f Shealtiel and his brthers arse and built the altar f the Gd f Israel t ffer burnt fferings n it, as it is written in the law f Mses, the man f Gd. Ezra 3:3 S they set up the altar n its fundatin, fr they were terrified because f the peples f the lands; and they ffered burnt fferings n it t the LORD, burnt fferings mrning and evening. Ezra 3:4 They celebrated the Feast f Bths, as it is written, and ffered the fixed number f burnt fferings daily, accrding t the rdinance, as each day required; Ezra 3:5 and afterward there was a cntinual burnt ffering, als fr the new mns and fr all the fixed festivals f the LORD that were cnsecrated, and frm everyne wh ffered a freewill ffering t the LORD. Ezra 3:6 Frm the first day f the seventh mnth they began t ffer burnt fferings t the LORD, but the fundatin f the temple f the LORD had nt been laid. Ezra 3:7 Then they gave mney t the masns and carpenters, and fd, drink and il t the Sidnians and t the Tyrians, t bring cedar wd frm Lebann t the sea at Jppa, accrding t the permissin they had frm Cyrus king f Persia Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 23-25! 5 The industry f Tyre became the means by which the Jews culd find sufficient materials t recnstruct the Temple in Jerusalem Gd ensured that Tyre s destructin lasted nly until He needed their industry t supprt His peple in their task f rebuilding Having ended the racles, let s review the list Babyln = enemy and his frces will be defeated, but Israel rises frm the ashes Philistines = thrne f David will rise again, even if it appears t have faded, and it will crush all ppsitin Mab = the Lrd will ffer refuge t a small remnant f gentiles, sheltered in Israel s prmises and share in her kingdm Gd will hld Israel accuntable and will bring judgment against Ephraim Cush = Israel s enemies will be transfrmed int natins that pay hmage t Zin Egypt = But the healing f these natins is nt withut cnsequences fr their sins against Israel, even leading t cnsequences in the kingdm Edm & Arabia = Upn Christ s return the Lrd will prepare a place f rescue fr the remnant f Israel frm within this enemy s land Every ne f Israel s neighbrs plays a part in Israel s triumph and restratin at the Lrd s return And each receive judgment Like watching yur favrite ftball team win the Super Bwl and having the team members f every rival carry yur team ff the field n their shulders Having finished this sectin, we mve int a new sectin affectinately called Isaiah s Little Apcalypse It ges frm here thrugh Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 23-25! 6 It s essentially a mini versin f what s fund in chapters 5-20 f Revelatin, which describes Tribulatin and the cming Kingdm And it even shares much f the same structure and rder as Revelatin This is als a gd pint t remind urselves f Isaiah s recurring themes Gd s svereign authrity and cntrl ver all The sinfulness f mankind and the inevitability f judgment fr sin The cming judgment f Israel fr transgressing the cvenant The remnant f Israel and the eventual restratin f Israel in the Kingdm All f these themes have been n display in the earlier chapters And they remain frnt and center in these next fur Is. 24:1 Behld, the LORD lays the earth waste, devastates it, distrts its surface and scatters its inhabitants. Is. 24:2 And the peple will be like the priest, the servant like his master, the maid like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the brrwer, the creditr like the debtr. Is. 24:3 The earth will be cmpletely laid waste and cmpletely despiled, fr the LORD has spken this wrd. Is. 24:4 The earth murns and withers, the wrld fades and withers, the exalted f the peple f the earth fade away. Is. 24:5 The earth is als plluted by its inhabitants, fr they transgressed laws, vilated statutes, brke the everlasting cvenant. Is. 24:6 Therefre, a curse devurs the earth, and thse wh live in it are held guilty. Therefre, the inhabitants f the earth are burned, and few men are left. The wrld behld is in the future tense, indicating future visin The Lrd will lay the earth waste, devastate it, distrt it s surface and scatter it s inhabitants This happens t the entire wrld, s this is clearly an event unlike anything since the fld f Nah And amng the peple, all class distinctins cease Priests/peple, servants/masters...scial and ecnmic 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 23-25! 7 The earth cmpletely laid waste, exalted peple fade away And it is cmes under this judgment because it has been plluted by an earth full f guilty peple and fell under a curse What curse des the wrld suffer under? The ne Gd brught abut in the Garden (Gen 3:17) And mre specifically, men transgressed laws, vilated statutes, and brke the cvenant Causing the inhabitants f the earth t be burned, few are left As yu wuld imagine, life n Earth is pretty grim Is. 24:7 The new wine murns, The vine decays, All the merry-hearted sigh. Is. 24:8 The gaiety f tamburines ceases, The nise f revelers stps, The gaiety f the harp ceases. Is. 24:9 They d nt drink wine with sng; Strng drink is bitter t thse wh drink it. Is. 24:10 The city f chas is brken dwn; Every huse is shut up s that nne may enter. Is. 24:11 There is an utcry in the streets cncerning the wine; All jy turns t glm. The gaiety f the earth is banished. Is. 24:12 Deslatin is left in the city And the gate is battered t ruins. Is. 24:13 Fr thus it will be in the midst f the earth amng the peples, As the shaking f an live tree, As the gleanings when the grape harvest is ver. The vine decays, ending the prductin f wine And the merry-hearted gran All music ceases, and revalry ends Imagine that during Tribulatin life as we knw it ends Peple aren t enjying life at all N nice relaxing times with drink and music and celebratin All life is like Haiti after the earthquake 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 23-25! 8 Only there is n ne t bring relief The entire wrld suffers tgether Unimaginable grief and murning and suffering The full measure f Gd s wrath against sin is experienced The reference in verse 12 uses a definite article inflectin t indicate a singular city, likely Babyln as it s described in Rev 18 The result f this destructin is that the wrld is reduced t a remnant While we have lng been familiar with the idea f Israel being a remnant, nw we re seeing the wrld itself in that state They are like an live tree after a shaking r after a grape harvest Nw we see a break in Isaiah s message Only a few left n the vines and branches Is. 24:14 They raise their vices, they shut fr jy; They cry ut frm the west cncerning the majesty f the LORD. Is. 24:15 Therefre glrify the LORD in the east, The name f the LORD, the Gd f Israel, In the castlands f the sea. Is. 24:16 Frm the ends f the earth we hear sngs, Glry t the Righteus One, Withut naming them, Isaiah says they will shut fr jy They will cry frm east and west cncerning the Lrd and glrify the Gd f Israel Frm the ends f the earth, they praise the RIghteus One Hw des this happen in the midst f such devastatin? Well, clearly sme men are cming t faith in Gd during Tribulatin And thugh their physical wrld is falling apart, their spiritual wrld has becme new again Here s where we see the structure f Isaiah and the structure f Revelatin matching up 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 23-25! 9 In the bk f Revelatin, the events are brken up in a repeating pattern After the prphecy f the Church in chapters 1-5, the bks turns t the events f Tribulatin n Earth In chapter 6 the first vilent events f Tribulatin take place with the breaking f the seal judgments The events are devastating Let s read sme f thse events frm Revelatin and cmpare them t Isaiah s descriptin Rev. 6:4 And anther, a red hrse, went ut; and t him wh sat n it, it was granted t take peace frm the earth, and that men wuld slay ne anther; and a great swrd was given t him. Rev. 6:5 When He brke the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, Cme. I lked, and behld, a black hrse; and he wh sat n it had a pair f scales in his hand. Rev. 6:6 And I heard smething like a vice in the center f the fur living creatures saying, A quart f wheat fr a denarius, and three quarts f barley fr a denarius; and d nt damage the il and the wine. Rev. 6:7 When the Lamb brke the furth seal, I heard the vice f the furth living creature saying, Cme. Rev. 6:8 I lked, and behld, an ashen hrse; and he wh sat n it had the name Death; and Hades was fllwing with him. Authrity was given t them ver a furth f the earth, t kill with swrd and with famine and with pestilence and by the wild beasts f the earth. Cmpare these details t Isaiah Many men are dying The availability f gds is cnstrained Interestingly, the new wine is taken away, as Isaiah says But the existing wine and il are spared Then later in Rev 6 This is why Isaiah can say in v.9 that thse wh drink the strng drink see it as bitter It brings n jy in light f the circumstances and likely the cst 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 23-25! 10 Rev. 6:12 I lked when He brke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackclth made f hair, and the whle mn became like bld; Rev. 6:13 and the stars f the sky fell t the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. Rev. 6:14 The sky was split apart like a scrll when it is rlled up, and every muntain and island were mved ut f their places. Here we see the Earth itself reshaped as Isaiah predicted Muntains and islands mved arund Then finally in Rev 6: See v.1 f Isaiah 24 Rev. 6:15 Then the kings f the earth and the great men and the cmmanders and the rich and the strng and every slave and free man hid themselves in the caves and amng the rcks f the muntains; Rev. 6:16 and they said t the muntains and t the rcks, Fall n us and hide us frm the presence f Him wh sits n the thrne, and frm the wrath f the Lamb; Rev. 6:17 fr the great day f their wrath has cme, and wh is able t stand? Here we see the picture Isaiah prvided f classless sciety experiencing the Tribulatin Like in v.2 Then the pattern changes in bth Isaiah and Revelatin In Isaiah, we see men cming t knw and praise the Lrd amidst the calamity Likewise in Rev, we turn the page t chapter 7 and we see this Rev. 7:1 After this I saw fur angels standing at the fur crners f the earth, hlding back the fur winds f the earth, s that n wind wuld blw n the earth r n the sea r n any tree. Rev. 7:2 And I saw anther angel ascending frm the rising f the sun, having the seal f the living Gd; and he cried ut with a lud vice t the fur angels t whm it was granted t harm the earth and the sea, Rev. 7:3 saying, D nt harm the earth r the sea r the trees until we have sealed the bnd-servants f ur Gd n their freheads Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 23-25! 11 Rev. 7:9 After these things I lked, and behld, a great multitude which n ne culd cunt, frm every natin and all tribes and peples and tngues, standing befre the thrne and befre the Lamb, clthed in white rbes, and palm branches were in their hands; Rev. 7:10 and they cry ut with a lud vice, saying, Salvatin t ur Gd wh sits n the thrne, and t the Lamb. Even as the Lrd is puring ur wrath n the Earth fr sin, He is at wrk raising up a new generatin f believers Isaiah makes the same transitin, alluding t this new wave f evangelism in vs the first part f 16 Then Isaiah returns t the events f Tribulatin Is. 24:16 Frm the ends f the earth we hear sngs, Glry t the Righteus One, But I say, We t me! We t me! Alas fr me! The treacherus deal treacherusly, And the treacherus deal very treacherusly. Is. 24:17 Terrr and pit and snare Cnfrnt yu, O inhabitant f the earth. Is. 24:18 Then it will be that he wh flees the reprt f disaster will fall int the pit, And he wh climbs ut f the pit will be caught in the snare; Fr the windws abve are pened, and the fundatins f the earth shake. Is. 24:19 The earth is brken asunder, The earth is split thrugh, The earth is shaken vilently. Is. 24:20 The earth reels t and fr like a drunkard And it ttters like a shack, Fr its transgressin is heavy upn it, And it will fall, never t rise again. Is. 24:21 S it will happen in that day, That the LORD will punish the hst f heaven n high, And the kings f the earth n earth. Is. 24:22 They will be gathered tgether Like prisners in the dungen, And will be cnfined in prisn; And after many days they will be punished. Is. 24:23 Then the mn will be abashed and the sun ashamed, Fr the LORD f hsts will reign n Munt Zin and in Jerusalem, And His glry will be befre His elders. The first persn prnun in v.16 is frm the perspective f a witness f these events, ne wh is present n the Earth but is nt ne f the believers in the earlier verses Isaiah repeats ne f his favrite phrases 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 23-25! 12 The treacherus deal treacherusly It s a statement f nature nt changing apart frm Gd s pwer The cntrast is between the believers transfrmed by Gd s Spirit And the rest f humanity wh desn t turn frm their ways even despite all that is happening t them Rev. 9:20 The rest f mankind, wh were nt killed by these plagues, did nt repent f the wrks f their hands, s as nt t wrship demns, and the idls f gld and f silver and f brass and f stne and f wd, which can neither see nr hear nr walk; Rev. 9:21 and they did nt repent f their murders nr f their srceries nr f their immrality nr f their thefts. S Isaiah returns t describing the events f Tribulatin He paints very brad strkes here, summarizing many details with a few shrt verses In vs describe the inescapability f the events Men are caught up regardless f hw they try t escape The physical earth is trn apart in the curse f these events It appears like a drunken sailr, as if yu culd view the Earth wbbling frm a distance in space Then Isaiah mves t the end effect f Tribulatin All sinners are gathered tgether as prisners in the dungen Cnfined in prisn And after many days they are punished This is a descriptin f hw men are held fr 1,000 years in Hadfes awaiting the Great White Thrne judgment Rev. 20:1 Then I saw an angel cming dwn frm heaven, hlding the key f the abyss and a great chain in his hand. Rev. 20:2 And he laid hld f the dragn, the serpent f ld, wh is the devil and Satan, and bund him fr a thusand years; 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 23-25! 13 Rev. 20:3 and he threw him int the abyss, and shut it and sealed it ver him, s that he wuld nt deceive the natins any lnger, until the thusand years were cmpleted; after these things he must be released fr a shrt time. Rev. 20:4 Then I saw thrnes, and they sat n them, and judgment was given t them. And I saw the suls f thse wh had been beheaded because f their testimny f Jesus and because f the wrd f Gd, and thse wh had nt wrshiped the beast r his image, and had nt received the mark n their frehead and n their hand; and they came t life and reigned with Christ fr a thusand years. Rev. 20:5 The rest f the dead did nt cme t life until the thusand years were cmpleted. This is the first resurrectin. Rev. 20:6 Blessed and hly is the ne wh has a part in the first resurrectin; ver these the secnd death has n pwer, but they will be priests f Gd and f Christ and will reign with Him fr a thusand years. Rev. 20:7 When the thusand years are cmpleted, Satan will be released frm his prisn, Rev. 20:8 and will cme ut t deceive the natins which are in the fur crners f the earth, Gg and Magg, t gather them tgether fr the war; the number f them is like the sand f the seashre. Rev. 20:9 And they came up n the brad plain f the earth and surrunded the camp f the saints and the belved city, and fire came dwn frm heaven and devured them. Rev. 20:10 And the devil wh deceived them was thrwn int the lake f fire and brimstne, where the beast and the false prphet are als; and they will be trmented day and night frever and ever. Rev. 20:11 Then I saw a great white thrne and Him wh sat upn it, frm whse presence earth and heaven fled away, and n place was fund fr them. Rev. 20:12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing befre the thrne, and bks were pened; and anther bk was pened, which is the bk f life; and the dead were judged frm the things which were written in the bks, accrding t their deeds. Rev. 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every ne f them accrding t their deeds. Rev. 20:14 Then death and Hades were thrwn int the lake f fire. This is the secnd death, the lake f fire. Rev. 20:15 And if anyne s name was nt fund written in the bk f life, he was thrwn int the lake f fire. Isaiah summarized these events in tw verses In v.22 he described the punishment f the wicked including the perid f waiting In v.23 he describes the reign f Christ n earth during the 1,000 years 2010 Verse By Verse Ministry f San Antni ( May be cpied and distributed prvided the dcument is reprduced in its entirety, including this cpyright statement, and n fee is cllected fr its distributin.

Isaiah 23-25! 14 Then in chapter 25, Isaiah gives anther glimpse at hw the first mments f the new kingdm play ut Is. 25:1 O LORD, Yu are my Gd; I will exalt Yu, I will give thanks t Yur name; Fr Yu have wrked wnders, Plans frmed lng ag, with perfect faithfulness. Is. 25:2 Fr Yu have made a city int a heap, A frtified city int a ruin; A palace f strangers is a city n mre, It will never be rebuilt. Is. 25:3 Therefre a strng peple will glrify Yu; Cities f ruthless natins will revere Yu. Is. 25:4 Fr Yu have been a defense fr the helpless, A defense fr the needy in his distress, A refuge frm the strm, a shade frm the heat; Fr the breath f the ruthless Is like a rain strm against a wall. Is. 25:5 Like heat in drught, Yu subdue the uprar f aliens; Like heat by the shadw f a clud, the sng f the ruthless is silenced. Is. 25:6 The LORD f hsts will prepare a lavish banquet fr all peples n this muntain; A banquet f aged wine, chice pieces with marrw, And refined, aged wine. Is. 25:7 And n this muntain He will swallw up the cvering which is ver all peples, Even the veil which is stretched ver all natins. Is. 25:8 He will swallw up death fr all time, And the Lrd GOD will wipe tears away frm all faces, And He will remve the reprach f His peple frm all the earth; Fr the LORD has spken. Is. 25:9 And it will be said in that day, Behld, this is ur Gd fr whm we have waited that He might save us. This is the LORD fr whm we have waited; Let us rejice and be glad in His salvatin. Is. 25:10 Fr the hand f the LORD will rest n this muntain, And Mab will be trdden dwn in his place As straw is trdden dwn in the water f a manure pile. Is. 25:11 And he will spread ut his hands in the middle f it As a swimmer spreads ut his hands t swim, But the Lrd will lay lw his pride tgether with the trickery f his hands.
