TWO QUESTIONS FOR THE BOOK OF JONAH: What is God like? -sovereign, holy, merciful, patient, gracious, revelatory, redemptive, compassionate What is Jonah like? -racist, bitter, angry, selfish, unstable?, stubborn, cruel, unmerciful 1. God Shows Mercy to ALL Who Repent and Trust in Him a. Jonah the dove b. Genesis 8, Noah and the dove's significance in revealing that the waters had subsided i. waters symbolized chaos in the ancient near east, thus you have many poetic statements of God ruling the waters, heaping up the waters, drawing boundaries for the water ii. even in the telling of Creation, God is pictured as hovering over the waters, the chaotic and powerful unknown and separating them, marking them out, sovereignly telling these great forces where to go iii. Water implied judgment, danger, death in the chaos of the deep, so the dove became symbolic of hope of salvation from the judgment of the deep c. Thus, Jonah is sent as a dove to reveal to the enemies of Israel that there is hope of salvation from the chaos and dangerous powerful deep: the judgment of the Most High God i. Even here we see that God is proclaiming hope to the nations, the escape from judgment, the olive branch of salvation from under the depth of sin that would swallow them up. d. He is also mentioned as servant of the LORD in 2 Kings 14:25, a prophet who spoke during the reign of Jeroboam and the prophetic ministry of both Hosea and Amos (Hos 1:1; Amos 1:1) i. While Hosea and Amos were calling out to Judah and Israel, Jonah received the call to cry out to Nineveh, his Assyrian enemy (bummer!) 2. "The Word of the LORD" Reveals God s Character and Desires a. The Word of the LORD i. Something that prophets receive, they do not conjure 1. It cannot be halted, nor could it be called 2. It grips their minds and pierces their conscience, impelled their emotions and propelled their journey as they knew that they could not escape the certain assurance that the Almighty God had spoken and would not remain silent ii. Privilege of God s Presence 1. Prophets describe the Lord s word as shattering their rocky hearts, a fire raging within them, a sword in their spirits, a burden upon their shoulders, bitter to the taste, and upsetting to the stomach. 2. Such was the sharpness of an encounter with God s speaking to them b. Sovereignty of God - a major emphasis of the book i. We typically don't have issues with God's sovereignty over the waves, or over the plants, or even over the great fish ii. We usually struggle with God's sovereignty when it comes into direct confrontation with a human's own will iii. Let's keep in mind how God handles this confrontation in the book of Jonah

1. God can overrule man's will, but rarely does (see Pharaoh, Paul) 2. Usually God uses a "gentler" means of accomplishing His own will a. We must also note that Jonah doesn't seem to get the lesson that he needs to change, for the book ends abruptly with Jonah still seething in anger toward God b. Some commentators have speculated that Jonah wrote the story down in an act of repentance iv. Now, I very commonly meet with persons who say, I felt that I must do so and so. It came upon me that I must do so and so. People may do right under their power, but they will spoil what they do by doing it out of mere impulse, and not because the action was right in itself. (Spurgeon) 1. What does the Lord want of us? How do we "discover" it? How do we respond to it? a. An urging may be very brave, yet wrong (Jonah was very brave in embarking on such a long sea-journey) b. An impulse may appear to be self-denying, yet wrong (it cost Jonah much in money and comfort to go on this long sea-journey) c. An impulse may lay claim to freedom, yet be wrong (wasn t Jonah free to go to Tarshish?) d. An impulse may lead someone to do something that they would condemn in others (what would Jonah say to another prophet disobeying God?) 2. The question is where is the urge coming from: Flesh or Spirit? and is its aim and means according to God s revealed character and work? c. Mercy of God - a major emphasis of the book i. God proclaiming His mercy toward the Assyrians if they will repent 1. There is an implicit call to repent and be saved from destruction within Jonah's message from the Lord 2. Jonah understood this, which is why he didn't want to go, because he knew that when the Ninevites repented, God would show mercy (4:2) ii. God moving in mercy toward His wayward prophet time and again 1. God shows incredible patience towards Jonah 2. He disciplines him with storms, the horror of the fish, worms, etc., but He continues to pursue Jonah so that Jonah would know Him truly 3. When We Run From the Lord We Never Arrive at Our Destination and We Pay for the Ticket a. Upon hearing the LORD s Word, Jonah ran away to Tarshish i. Most think Tarshish was on the western border of Spain 1. MAP 2. In the exact opposite direction of Nineveh, and around 2000 miles to the west of Israel, almost 3000 from Nineveh ii. Jonah found a place of relative security, it looked good and capable of saving him from this situation

1. The ships that carried goods from Spain to the Middle East were the strongest of boats, capable of longer voyages than smaller boats could handle. 2. How many of our plans seem good to us, capable of saving us, like better options than the difficult path to a wicked place (even though the LORD has called us there)? a. When the Lord calls us to love our spouses But my wife is bitter and hateful; she works against me and purposely makes my life miserable! (wicked) Along comes a lovely woman, a compassionate woman, a strong and capable companion who can handle the rough seas of life Which way are you going when the Lord has spoken? b. When the Lord has called us to submit to our masters But my boss is a jerk, he hates me and always promotes other people because he despises the fact that I m a Christian, I haven t even gotten a raise in 5 years! Gathered at the water cooler the conversation turns to an opportunity for gossip, to shatter his reputation, to destroy his character in front of other employees and ride your buoyant self-righteousness out into the open sea of your own glorious status Which way are you going when the Lord has spoken? b. To flee from the presence (face) of the LORD i. Jonah started by running from God s Word 1. It wasn t that Jonah didn t understand the Word, it was clear. a. Get up and go to Nineveh pretty clear call b. that great and wicked city rings with reality and truth c. cry out against them a heavy responsibility 2. Jonah s disobedience wasn t an intellectual conundrum over God s Word, but rather a moral clashing of wills between himself and God a. He knew what God wanted, but Jonah didn t want it b. The veritable Flesh vs. Spirit battle ii. What was it that bothered Jonah? 1. God s mercy toward His enemy!! a. God was actually asking him to be merciful and do something that might actually bless his wicked enemy! b. Has God asked this of you? 2. His reputation as a prophet?! a. What would people think of him going to the enemy s greatest city and proclaiming a warning that might result in them being saved? b. Jonah s real problem was that he desired his own reputation, his own will, his own desires, his own purposes more than God s He feared to lay down life s glory dead

How much like Jonah we are! iii. Trusting in our own plans and desires rather than the Word of God is the same as fleeing from His face 1. Do we realize this? Ignoring God s Word is running away from God, there is no neutral, standing still position when it comes to God s Word. 2. Attitude of heart, not merely reading or studying, but following humbly c. He paid the fare to flee i. (Donald Grey Barnhouse) Nevertheless, when you run away from the LORD, you never get to where you are going and you always pay your own fare. ii. Jonah thought that he had everything under control and going well. His plan seemed good, so good that he slept on the boat. 1. In the end, however, he never made it to Tarshish, and yet he still paid the full fare for the trip 2. When we run away from the Lord and try to do the things that we think are better, strong, secure, safe, we will find that when we belong to God we never get to where we re going (idols never deliver), and we will lose our investment in those things. iii. Ricky and my anger yesterday 1. When the Lord called upon me to trust Him, to run to Him, to cling to Him, I ran to ice cream and meatballs (not at the same time) and football 2. I took the boat headed to a tub of Dreyer s and fuzzy images of Autzen, paid my fare (diet busted and son banished), and never arrived at peace or rest for my situation has not changed. 4. When We Run to the Lord in Humble Dependence, He Gets Us Where We re Going and He Pays the Fare a. When you go the LORD s way, you not only get to where you are going, but He pays the fare. (Barnhouse) i. Hebrews 13:5 I will never leave you, nor forsake you. ii. Phil 1:6 He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion in the day of Christ. iii. Just as God carried the Israelites out from Egypt, like a Father carries his small son (Deut 1:31), so God has carried us out of sin s grasp and will bring us into the Promised Land of His presence for all eternity (Rev 21:5) b. This is the gospel that must be applied to our particular situations: i. Do we trust God enough in the moment to obey him, to bring us to where we re going? Rest of soul? Peace of spirit? Joy in His presence? Holiness of life? Fruitfulness of ministry? ii. Am I relying on Jesus to bring me the blessings of God, the honor that my heart pursues, the healing of my heart s broken desires, the forgiveness that my rebel soul desperately needs?

Conclusion: For some of you, you may be hearing the Gospel call of God s Word for the first time. God is calling you to turn from trusting in yourself and to trust in Him. But how? Where do you turn for mercy and for forgiveness? How could a holy God ever accept a broken ruin like you? There is a ship called Redemption full of ruined sinners made new. It is sailed by a Captain who answered God s every call, who never succumbed to the temptation to run from God s presence or to trust in Himself; A Captain who was flung to the depths of the judgment of God, submerged into darkness in your place, so that you and I may be brought across the sea to the Fair Havens where God dwells. Jesus Christ is the Son of God who was born of a virgin, lived a sinless and perfect God-fearing life of obedience, died as a substitute for sin in the place of our sins, was raised again from the depths of the grave to give us new and glorious life, to carry us even today by His grace. Will you board Redemption with this Captain? Today the call goes out! Turn away from your sins and entrust yourself to Him! The journey is not easy, your will be asked to perform difficult tasks as part of the crew. Nor is it always in still waters, but your Captain never leaves and always keeps His bearing straight and true toward the fullness of joy in His presence. You have pulled at the oars of your life long enough to know that you are not getting closer to the land of joy and life and peace, but only farther away. Your rebel heart has broken your masts and tattered your sails and you are dead in the water. Let your dreams and desires, your steps and your strokes come under the great rule of the Captain King who loves you more dearly than you can ever imagine and place your trust in Him, turning away from your fruitless schemes upon any other vessel. If you will get off of your own vessel of fruitless schemes and place your trust in Him, He will pay the fare, in His own blood, a bond unbreakable, He will sign your name in the log. Some of you are already on the boat, but the Captain has asked you to do something that your heart does not desire to do. You ve got one foot in a dinghy ready to set sail to some island of reputation or control. Do not forget the depth of the love that your Captain holds for you. He will not ask you to do anything by which He will not empower you to do by the wind of His Holy Spirit. He is for you. Trust Him and get back in the boat. Some of you may have already set sailed from the Captain. Like Jonah you are trying to run away from the difficult command to love your enemy, to pray for him, to serve him and bless him. May I implore you to turn around before the storm assails you, before your fare is lost. I take comfort in the fact that the Captain never loses a soul aboard the Redemption, and He will walk the waters to find you again, send storms to assail you, or great tragedies to swallow you, but He will not lose you. He will not forsake you to the waves. He will find you and bring you home. Such is your Captain. You can come home to Him today, for He has paid your fare and that fare still stands. Do not forget your forgiveness from your former sins and so become unfruitful. Remember the Captain and fly back. The wind always blows home for you. Prayer: Holy, Sovereign, and Merciful Father: I pray that your Holy Spirit would strengthen our feeble weak-kneed souls to hear and heed your Word, to run toward Your presence even when our wills clash with Yours. I ask that you would mortify our sinful and evil desires as we trust in You who did not spare Your own eternal Son to redeem us. You will keep me truly. Strengthen us, by the Holy Spirit s power, to walk toward the heavy responsibility of Your calling to lay down my own glory dead, if it means Your presence is with me and Your will be done. For Your glory and for my good I implore You of these things. Amen.
