2 Bible Road Trip ~ covers 1 Samuel 9-15; the reign of Saul. This week, we are studying the middle chapters of 1 Samuel, the fourth historical book. 1 Samuel is written primarily as a hero story the biographical stories of individuals and their role in the struggle of good versus evil. The primary heroes involved in 1 Samuel are Samuel, Saul, and David. Secondary heroes are Hannah, Eli and Jonathan. This week, we will meet Saul and Jonathan, and Samuel continues to play a central role. As we focus on the reign of Saul, the quality of his character becomes a major issue. We begin this week by reading that Saul was young, handsome and a head above anyone else in Israel. (Next week, our Dialectic text The Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook - contains a very interesting article about the height of Saul versus the actual height of Goliath). Saul begins his reign by hiding among baggage just as he is announced as God s selection as king. Is it any wonder that some of the Israelites doubted his ability to lead the nation? Through the first portion of his reign, Saul makes three terrible choices. First, he sacrifices to the Lord, when Levitical Law clearly states that the sacrificial system is to be carried out solely by the priesthood. Next, Saul makes a terrible oath he deprives his warriors of food until after sundown, and then vows to kill the man who has defied the oath. This man turns out to be his own son, Jonathan. In the end, Saul directly disobeys God by refusing to destroy all of the Amalekite possessions. As a result of Saul s defiance and disobedience, God removes the crown from him. Even when faced with God s rebuke, Saul is primarily concerned with being honored before his people. In the Grammar stages, our prayer focus this week is Sri Lanka, and for the Dialectic and Rhetoric stages we ll study Japan, North Korea and South Korea.
