6 Introduction I grew up hearing and singing hymns and gospel songs at the Hartwell United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. I later heard and sang hymns and gospel songs at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Erlanger, Kentucky. When I visited with family and friends, I got a little from the Baptists and the Presbyterians. In my college years I was exposed to the music of Episcopalians, Catholics, Messianic Jews, and groups that had left strict Mennonite communities for more freedom in Christ. When I started going to mountain dulcimer clubs, festivals, and jams, I ran into a lot of this kind of music. Some of it I knew real well. Some of it was vaguely familiar. Most of it I did not know. It was at this time I developed a hunger for these melodies. I started buying lots of books and hymnals. My plan to better learn these tunes started with sight-singing them at a couple nursing homes while I accompanied myself on guitar. fter three or four months, they started to sink into my brain. I had just met Katie. She seemed to know every song I mentioned. We started hitting a local nursing home together with her singing melody and me singing harmony and playing guitar. ll throughout this time I had been getting to know Katie s friends and families. Their frequent singing drew from a large reservoir collected from many Christian traditions. I believe the lyrics will be especially helpful to those who know these tunes but are just beginning to read music. The chord symbols are for playing backup as well as for arranging. The melodies, chords, and lyrics may be slightly different than what you re used to. Just like recipes, there can be many variations. I ve tried very hard to select the most common settings. If you are familiar with my first Join the Jam book, you know I added lots of filler strums to enrich the basic melodies. In this book, I ve added no filler strums. The rhythms go exactly with the syllables of the lyrics. When I play these songs, I add filler strums on the spot. You should feel free to do the same. (I ll list a few examples in the next section.) Measures and were originally quarter-notes only. I ve turned some of these quarter-notes into eighth-note pairs. Measure originally started with a half-note. I ve turned it into a quarter-note followed by an eighth-note pair. Measure originally had a whole-note tied to a half-note in measure 8. That s 6 beats for one long note. In this version, I removed the tie and divided the whole-note in measure into quarter-notes and eighth note pairs. Basically, whenever there are long notes or places you d like to hear more strums, just try adding them. I cover improvising quarter-note and eighth-note strums in the beginner section of Lesson #. I add the concept of air-strums in the beginner section of Lesson #8. I normally strum out for every number in the tab with a single vertical line hanging off it.
