Group Hug! Bible Story: Group Hug! (Jesus and the Children) Mark 10:13-16 Bottom Line: There s always time to be kind. Memory Verse: Do to others as you want them to do to you. Luke 6:31, NIrV Life App: Kindness showing others they are valuable by how you treat them. Basic Truth: I should treat others the way I want to be treated. Plug In: Focus the Energy (Small Groups, minutes) Focus the energy on today s Bible story in a Small Group setting with an engaging discussion question and an interactive opening activity. Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Ask God to open your kids eyes to all the opportunities to be kind to others. Pray that they will carry the truth of today s message into their lives in a practical way this week, taking time to be kind to everyone around them. 1. Early Arriver Idea What You Need: An offering container Welcome kids as they arrive and collect their offerings. Ask them about something great that happened this past week. Did someone in particular make that awesome thing possible, perhaps by being kind to you in some way? How did that make you feel about that person? What do you think makes a person kind? Who is someone who might think you are kind? 2. A Special Visitor better option so it s up to you to make it work if you choose this one What You Need: Fish and fish food (or a mobile device with a mobile app such as Fish Farm 2 or a photo of a fish) Introduce the group to the fish you ve brought with you (or show kids the app and how to use it). Explain whom it belongs to and how the group has been entrusted to care for it today. Teach the kids how to feed it, and then give them an opportunity to do just that. Talk about pets they have (or have had), including what it meant to make time for those pets. Point out how we have to decide if we re going to be kind to such creatures or harass them, such as constantly tapping on a fishbowl or yelling at a dog. 1
Having a pet can be a challenge. Sometimes people get busy and overlook their responsibilities to care for their pets, and sometimes we do the same thing with our friends and family we overlook opportunities to care for them. [Transition] Let s go to Large Group and learn more about caring for others and how to show them they are valuable. Lead your group to the Large Group area. Catch On: Make the Connection (Small Groups, minutes) Make the connection of how today s Bible story applies to real life experiences through interactive activities and discussion questions. 1. Disciples, May I? (review the Bible story / great for active learners) What You Need: A bag of small candy (or grapes), hand sanitizer Designate one or two members of your group to be the disciples, and put them in control of the candy (or grapes). Make them each clean their hands with the hand sanitizer. Explain that if anyone else wants a piece, he or she has to ask, Disciples, may I have something sweet? Based on however the students playing the disciples are feeling, they can say, Sure, or No, not right now, or Yes, but first you have to do something and prove you re worthy of it. This is where they can get creative and ask another student to hop on one foot, dance like a turkey, and so on. Monitor this to make sure nothing is cruel, but all in good fun. Debrief afterward, asking the non-disciples how they felt about the experience. See if anyone can relate this back to today s Bible lesson from when the disciples tried to keep the kids from being able to spend time with Jesus. Finally, offer everyone (including the disciples) a free round of candy or grapes. Note: For a non-food option, consider using stickers or beads. If you use beads, also provide lanyard material or stretchy bracelet cord so the kids can make bracelets after the activity. 5-6 Challenge: Do the activity as described above, but along with asking someone to do a physical action, the disciples will also ask kids to tell one way they were kind to someone this past week or one way they plan to be kind to someone this coming week. They have to answer the question WHILE doing the action. We don t always realize how sometimes we can be like the disciples were in today s Bible story, but when we re unkind to people, they don t get to see God in us and realize how awesome He is. [Apply] Instead, we need to be like Jesus and show kindness to everyone. Kindness can be like connecting the dots between everyone and God. Kindness is showing others they are valuable by how you treat them. And sure, kindness shows other they are valuable to you, but when you show kindness you are also showing them that they are valuable to Jesus, too. It s why [Impress] there is always time to be kind, or else we might just end up forgetting to share what we ve found in Jesus with others. 2
* 2. I Want So I Will (application activity) What You Need: I Want So I Will Activity Pages, pencils Lead a brief discussion with your group about how sometimes people stop your efforts for showing kindness. You can allow them the chance to share personal stories here (without using any names!) or any examples they ve seen in their lives or history when people faced people who were unkind even when they tried to extend kindness to them. Point out that sometimes we contribute to this when we want others to be kind before we ll be kind in return, or when we decide that we ll stop being kind if the other person doesn t return the kindness. Hand out the Activity Page and use it to talk through the ways that we want kindness extended to us, and how we can extend that same kindness to others. [Make It Personal] Share about a time when you were so inspired by someone else s act of kindness that you wanted to pay it forward and be kind to others. Sometimes we wait to be all in on something until we see other people are all in on it first. This can be true even of kindness if we wait for others to be kind to us before we decide if we ll be kind to them. But it s like we learned today: [Impress] there is always time to be kind, which means that [Apply] kindness can begin with us if we allow it. You may even end up being the one who models to others what kindness looks like as you show them they are valuable by how you treat them. 3. All Kinds of Kindness (memory verse activity) What You Need: Bibles, whiteboard or butcher paper, marker Help kids look up Luke 6:31 in their Bibles using the following tips. Finding verses with 4 th -5 th graders: Our verse comes from Luke. Ask kids to tell you if Luke is in the Old Testament or the New Testament. (New) So we know it s going to be toward the back of the Bible. Ask if Luke was one of the four Gospel writers. (Yes.) So it s one of the first four books of the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. A quick way to find the Gospels is to open the Bible to the middle and then open the right half to the middle again. Then flip pages backward or forward to find Luke. Ask them to find Luke; then find Chapter 6 (big number) and then verse 31 (small number). Read the verse together. Spend some time talking about why kids think Jesus felt this principle was important. Then write the word KINDNESS down the middle of the whiteboard or paper. Then ask kids to help you come up with eight ways they can be kind this week. The trick is that the first idea must include a K somewhere in it, the second one has to include an I, then an N, and so on. Begin calling out the letters, helping students with ideas if they get stuck. 5-6 Challenge: A Taste of Kindness (If you choose to add this, you ll need to provide supplies. It sounds deliciously fun) What You Need: Bibles, soft cookies, cake icing in a tube, hand sanitizer, napkins, allergy alert sign 3
Ask kids to look up Luke 6:31 in their Bibles, using the tips above. Say the verse together a few times. Spend some time talking about why kids think Jesus felt this principle was important. Next, pass the hand sanitizer around and make sure everyone cleans their hands. Explain that they will be writing out the word kindness by using the cake icing to draw a letter onto each cookie. The only catch: Kids have to claim a letter by being the first one to think of a way to express kindness in a way that starts with that letter, so we can do to others as we would have them do to us. For example: Kiss my mom goodnight every night before bed Include a sibling in a game I m playing with my friends Notice the things my parents do for me Draw a picture for God to tell Him thank you for being in my life Not complain to my parents Encourage a friend with a kind note Share the money God s given me with someone in need Sing a song that I know will make someone s day Begin calling out the letters, helping students with ideas if they get stuck. If you have more than eight kids, let any extra kids draw a shape on a cookie. If you have fewer than eight kids, some of them can do two cookies. Once all the cookies have been decorated, have everyone repeat the memory verse together. Finally, allow kids to eat the cookies. This activity took some time, but as we learned in our story today, [Impress] there is always time to be kind. There are so many ways to show kindness, but no matter how we show kindness, we can always keep in mind what Jesus said: to do to others as you want them to do to you. [Apply] Maybe one place to start is in how you speak with others. Remember, kindness is showing others they are valuable by how you treat them. If you lead mostly older kids, consider asking these discussion questions: In your own words, describe a kind person. What do you think motivates people to be kind? Think of as many reasons as you can. Now how about you? What motivates you to be kind? When has an act of kindness changed how you were feeling about your day or week? Has an act of kindness ever changed how you look at the world? How so? [Make It Personal] (Share about a time when kindness to you or someone else changed your outlook on life.) Do you think people can be kind even when they re angry? Why or why not? Can you think of an example of either? 4
Pray and Dismiss What You Need: No supplies needed Review what you ve talked about together today. See if kids can articulate back to you this week s Bottom Line, even in their own words: [Impress] There is always time to be kind. Ask them to think about someone they may not always take the time to be kind to, and let them know that as you lead them in prayer that you ll pause and give them an opportunity to ask God for help in making time to be kind to that person. They can do this silently, or they can share the person s name out loud as a way for the group to support them in this. Challenge your group members to pray for that person at least once a day all throughout the upcoming week. 5
Dear God, we know that You want Your disciples to bring people to You. [Apply] We also recognize that our kindness to others is one way we can show them Your love. We ask for Your help and awareness as we think of these people we feel You want us to be kind to this week. (Pause.) Show us how to do this through Your strength in us, as we pray this in Jesus name, amen! 6
