The hike, though formulated on the Shacharit service, is not at all a typical service. These laws of purity, known as Niddah, transformed how Jewish women have traditionally interacted with their spouses, community, and God. In this class we will examine the foundations of these laws, wrestle with their assumptions, and personally solve the mystery of one of the most controversial of Jewish practices. 13 Jewish Studies for K-6th Graders Sundays 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Our Jewish Studies sessions allow students to engage in deep learning in a fun and creative setting. We use art, drama, music, creative writing, and movement to bring Jewish texts, traditions, and ideas to life. Each Sunday our school engages in an uplifting, musical service and every grade participates as service leaders during one Shabbat each year. Standard Hebrew School for 3rd-6th Graders Tuesdays 4:15-6:15 p.m. At TBS, we teach students Hebrew through Behrman House s Shaolm Uvracha and Kol Yisrael programs. These newly released programs include a technology component that allows our students to engage in Hebrew instruction and games at home and in our school computer lab. With our small class sizes, our teachers are able to give individual attention to students. Tuesday students also enjoy weekly tefillot and special chuggim (activities). Hebrew-Connection & Family Learning Circle Program for 3rd-6th Graders Various Times and Locations Families may choose to enroll their child in our nationally recognized Hebrew Connection program, where a private tutor meets at the students home each week for one-on-one instruction. To integrate Hebrew Connection children and families into the TBS community, Hebrew Connection families are required to take part in our Family Learning Circle (FLC) program. In Family Learning Circle, parents and families earn 10 credits by participating in a variety of family education, adult education, and youth group activities. Programs offering FLC credits are indicated throughout this entire brochure. Religious School Retreats and Trips 3rd-8th Grade BJE Community Shabbaton Friday, March 2 - Sunday, March 4, th Grade Retreat Friday, October 21 - Sunday, October 23, th Grade Confirmation Retreat Friday, November 18 - Sunday, November 20, th Grade Jewish Civil Rights Tour of the South Thursday, February 16 - Monday, February 20, th Grade ATID/B nai Mitzvah Class Tuesday Nights, Select Saturdays and Sundays 6:30-8:30 p.m. (Tuesdays) On select Shabbat and Sunday mornings, the 7th graders meet with Rabbi Cohen to explore what it means to be a Jewish adult, tackling issues from keeping kosher to observing Shabbat. The B nei Mitzvah class is enhanced by a series of family programs and a special 7th Grade Retreat. Additionally, students take part in our ATID program on Tuesday nights. During ATID students participate in B nei Mitzvah and Trope Training, Holocaust studies, and an array of engaging electives. 8th Grade ATID Tuesdays 6:30-8:30 p.m. In ATID 8th graders continue their learning with a study of Comparative Judaism (1st Semester) and Modern Israel (2nd Semester). 8th Graders also have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of electives including Jewish arts, drama, music, ethics, and more. A 20-minute dinner and social time is also provided to foster the friendships between our teenage students. 10th Grade Confirmation Select Sundays 12:00-1:30 p.m. In Confirmation, students return to us on select Sundays from 12:00-1:30 PM. Confirmation students have an opportunity to reflect on their own Jewish identities and confirm their commitment to Jewish life. Confirmation students take a special trip to Joshua Tree and lead the congregation in a Confirmation Shabbat. 11th and 12th Grade Post-Confirmation Select Sundays Post-Confirmation students gather one Sunday each month and learn with the TBS Senior Staff. Most gatherings are held in a private home setting, where dinner is served and students get a chance to enjoy each other s company. The Post-Confirmation curriculum alternates each year between a study of Comparative Religions and an in-depth study of Israel and Israel activism. Our Post Confirmation students also take an optional trip each year to New York City, the Religious Action Center, or the Jewish South East. Religious School Religious School 11

14 Family Education All families at Temple Beth Sholom are invited and encouraged to engage in learning together by participating in a variety of our diverse Family Education offerings. In addition to a number of Family Days that are a part of our regular Religious School programs, our families can choose to register for programming on select Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. These learning experiences range from mitzvah projects, to Shabbat hikes, to interactive Torah classes. Walking Together The Havdallah Chavurah 2:00-5:00 p.m. Sponsored by TBS Brotherhood Coordinator: Stephen Sherman Walking Together brings families of Jewish, Muslim, and Christian backgrounds together to learn about one another and celebrate diversity. Families will have the opportunity to explore three distinct houses of workship while creating connections with an interfaith community. Families in this track must be able to committ to all three dates and times. Our environment, both rich in Jewish culture and diverse in opportunity, provides safe surroundings for your child to explore, discover and learn. Our child centered, emergent curriculum encourages social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth with emphasis on Kindergarten readiness. Recognizing that children learn in a variety of ways and settings, our play yard, a certified outdoor classroom, is a beautiful extension of the indoor classroom. We offer 2, 3 and 5 day a week programs and are open from 7:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. Flexible scheduling is available. Some of our social action projects include our Mitzvah of the Month, which helps local agencies serving those in need of food, clothing or shelter, our High Holidays Food Drive, Jewish World Watch Walk, Mitzvah Day and much more. Mitzvah Meals - Every Sunday Each week our Mitzvah Meals Program prepares meals for 200 people. The Mitzvah Meals volunteers work in shifts every Sunday to sort, prepare, deliver and serve food to people at various shelters and soup kitchens located throughout Orange County. Chavurah A community within a community, Chavurah (Hebrew word for friendship group ) is a special program which enables the members of our congregation to get acquainted in smaller, more intimate friendship groups based upon compatible needs and interests. The Chavurah program is available to members of Temple Beth Sholom and provides a wonderful way to get to know others and to build lasting friendships with fellow synagogue members. Participate in Synagogue Life Torah Tots Torah Tots, a first step to life long Jewish learning, is a great start for parent or grandparent and child. Members of this beginning early childhood program actively participate in a variety of activities that introduce the beautiful customs and traditions of Shabbat and the Holidays. Socialization is an integral part of this program and together adult and child make new, lasting friendships. Appropriate for infants and toddlers up to 2 years of age, and their parents of course! Special Needs Network Bingo Preschool The Special Needs Network (SNN) at TBS is an outreach and support group for both the family and the member with special needs. The group addresses concerns with acceptance and inclusion while assisting families with resources and referrals. TBS offers assistance wth inclusion in all synagogue programs with focus on religious school, B nei Mitzvah preparation and holiday celebrations. Many members of SNN are parents who are professionals dealing with special needs concerns in their daily work, such as psychologists, lawyers, and social workers. These professionals have been very helpful in providing guidance and advocacy for the parents with the secular community school systems. Every Thursday evening over 150 people from throughout the community gather at Temple Beth Sholom for Bingo. This weekly activity comes together through the efforts of a marvelous group of dedicated and committed Temple Beth Sholom volunteers. Volunteering at Bingo is a great way to meet other TBS members and become a part of a major fundraising effort at Temple Beth Sholom.

17 The Temple Beth Sholom Brotherhood offers a variety of social activities and opportunities for our members. Events range from Dinner & Theater outings and a Joke Breakfast to a Father/Son Camping Trip.
