D Artagnan, Defending the Crown In the early seventeenth century, a young man called D Artagnan left his small provincial town in France. He was on his way to Paris. He was skilled with the sword as he trained a lot, for his dream was to become a Musketeer: one of the king s guards. Florence was an old woman and a peaceful shopkeeper who lived close to the king s palace. One day, she was attacked by thieves. They were about to hurt her when D Artagnan faced them and, after a fight, drove them off. That is how D Artagnan met Florence. They soon became good friends. At the palace, the king decided to take a week s holiday and to leave his daughter, Princess Anne, in charge of the kingdom. Anne, who was still young, was quite scared to rule the kingdom, even if it was only for one week, but she promised her father she would do her best. That day, D Artagnan bumped into Princess Anne. He apologized, but the captain of the Musketeers, Rochefort, thought D Artagnan was attacking the Princess, so he tried to capture him. D Artagnan managed to escape before hiding in Florence s shop. Madame Defarge was a rich, wicked woman. Her family had once ruled the country. Because of her evil intentions, she had been banished from France. Now that the king was away on holiday, she saw those seven days as an opportunity to recover her family s right to the throne and become queen. With promises of wealth, she persuaded Rochefort and Pierre, the court jester, to betray the Crown and formulate a plan to kill Princess Anne. But D Artagnan overheard the plan, and when he saw Princess Anne in danger, he stepped in and saved her. Unfortunately, Anne did not see it that way. She thought D Artagnan was attacking her, so he was captured. D Artagnan tried to explain his actions, but she would not listen, and he was taken to prison. Madam Defarge, who by now was quite impatient, decided to take action, and, with Rochefort s help, sent the princess to prison. All Madame Defarge had to do now was to capture the unsuspecting king upon his return, and she would become the queen. In prison, Anne and D Artagnan were powerless to stop the king from walking into Madame Defarge s trap. Florence tried to help them from the outside, but was captured and thrown into prisons too. Together, they thought of a plan to escape and defend the Crown. It was dangerous, but it was their only hope...
TREASON This is our chance to conquer France And get the power we want. Think of the gold, the precious stones, The crown and the throne. With just a part of all that gold We could be rich and strong. If we join now, we will have Not just a part, but all! Come, take my hand, we shall rule the land, We ll be queen and king. Let s unite, we shall rule the land, We ll be queen and king. We ll be king and queen. As soon as we take the throne, You must get rid of him. Do it right, don t fail, my friend, And it will be his end. It will be his... Come, take my hand, we shall rule the land, We ll be king and queen. Let s unite, we shall rule the land, We ll be king and queen. We ll be queen and king. As soon as we take the throne, You must get rid of her. Do it right, don t fail, my friend, And it will be her end. It will be her... Come, take my hand, we shall rule the land, We ll be queen and king. Let s unite, we shall rule the land, We ll be king and queen. We ll be queen and king / king and queen. Your plan, Madame, is sweet as jam, I hadn t thought of it before. So let us start and soon we ll have All the power we want.
DON T GIVE UP When you find your strength is gone And you cannot fight anymore, Just look inside yourself And you ll find it there. If you fall, it s not too late To stand up and try again, The sun will always shine After the rain. You can still make it if you try your best. If you need some help, just call a friend. Don t lose your hope, and don t lose your head. Take some time to think, and go ahead! If you don t see a way out, Don t despair, don t give up, I will always be By your side. You can still make it if you try your best. If you need some help, just call a friend. Don t lose your hope and don t lose your head. Take some time to think, and go ahead! (Repeat ad lib) You can still make it if you try your best. If you need some help, just call a friend. Don t lose your hope, and don t lose your head. Take some time to think, and go ahead!
The Ending This is part of D Artagnan s story. Can you imagine a possible ending? Draw it inside the empty box and write down your explanation. In the early seventeenth century, a young man called D Artagnan left his small provincial town in France. He was on his way to Paris. He was skilled with the sword as he trained a lot, for his dream was to become a Musketeer: one of the king s guards. D Artagnan managed to escape.
Madame Defarge was a rich, wicked woman. Her family had once ruled the country. Now that the king was away on holiday, she saw those seven days as an opportunity to recover her family s right to the throne and become queen. With promises of wealth, she persuaded Rochefort and Pierre, the court jester, to betray the Crown and formulate a plan to kill Princess Anne. When D Artagnan saw Princess Anne was in danger, he stepped in and saved her. Unfortunately, Anne did not see it that way. She thought D Artagnan was attacking her, so he was captured and sent to jail. Madam Defarge, who by now was quite impatient, decided to take action, and, with Rochefort s help, sent the princess to prison as well. At the end of the story,
Sing for France! Listen to the song For France and fill in the blank spaces. FOR FRANCE En garde! Come, me! I have no fear. I you, I ll become a. I came to Paris, From my small, To my people And defend the. My is quicker than a lightning flash. I face the, and I show no fear. My only dream s to be a. My sword will you with a slash. This is your end. Your time is. You should have when you could. But now you are. You have no exit. Your end is. Left, right, left, right, left, right. Beware! Don t hit your friend. Be with the wall. Watch! You may fall. Stand up and be. Don t ever steal again. Be men from now on Or it will be your. And you with your men. (.) Speak Out! Read the song again and answer the following question in groups. What characteristics should a Musketeer have?
D Artagnan s Story Read the beginning of D Artagnan s story carefully and write the verbs in the right form to suit the idea. Early in the 17th century, a young man (call) D Artagnan (leave) his small town to go to Paris. He (be) good with the sword because he (train) a lot; in fact, his dream (be) to become a Musketeer, one of the king s guards. Florence (be) an old, peaceful shopkeeper who (live) close to the king s palace. One day, three thieves (attack) her. D Artagnan (defend) her and they (run) away. That (be) how D Artagnan and Florence (meet) and (become) friends. At the palace, the king (decide) to take a week s holiday and (leave) his daughter Anne in charge of the kingdom. Although she was afraid, she (promise) to do her best. Madame Defarge (be) a rich and wicked woman whose family had once (rule) the country. Because of her evil ways, the king (banish) her from France. She (see) those seven days without the king as an opportunity to recover her family s right to the throne and (become) the queen. But D Artagnan (overhear) the plan, and when he (see) Princess Anne in danger, he (step) in and (save) her. Unfortunately, Anne did not see it that way. She (think) D Artagnan was (attack) her, so he was captured. D Artagnan (try) to explain his actions, but she would not listen, and he was (take) to prison.
The Letter Everybody who wants to become a Musketeer needs to write a letter to the king, explaining why he wants to become one. Can you help D Artagnan with his letter? Don t forget to include aspects of his noble personality, his love for France, and his extraordinary skills!
It s Time for a Song! In the following song, you will find three options for the same word. Read the lyrics carefully and circle the appropriate option. Then listen to the song and check if you were right. DON T GIVE UP When you find your strength is gone/alone/bone And you cannot fight anymore, Just took/look/book inside yourself And you ll kind/mind/find it there. If you fall, it s not too mate/late/skate To stand up and try again, The sun will always shine/mine/line After the gain/rain/pain. You can still make it if you lie/try/dry your best. If you lead/seed/need some help, just call a friend. Don t lose your hope, and don t lose your red/head/bread. Take some time to think/blink/pink, and go ahead! If you don t see a stay/way/day out, Don t despair, don t give up, I will always be By your ride/side/slide. (...) Speak Out! D artagnan s dream was to become a Musketeer. Do you have any dreams? Does your partner have a dream? Complete the sentence about yourself and then ask your friend about his/her dream. My dream is My friend s dream is Remember! To make your dream come true, don t ever give up on it!
