1 DiversityCalendar 2011/2012 DiversityCalendarMissionStatement Thepurposeofthiscalendaristoaddressandsupportthediversityofstudents,staffandfamilies.Werecognizethatbyincreasingourunderstandingof diversecultures,theirgroupexperiences,traditions,valuesandbeliefswecanenhanceourrelationshipswithoneanotherandhence,becomea culturallyresponsiveenvironmentwhereeveryonefeelsvaluedandrespected. HowDatesWereChosen Duetotheextensivenumberofculturalholidays,datesforthiscalendarweredeterminedbythefollowingfourcriteria: 1. Mightastudentorstaffmemberbeabsentasaresultofthisday? 2. Mightastudentorstaffmemberbedisengagedasaresultofthisday(e.g.,hungeroranegativeassociationwithaparticularday/datesuchas Thanksgiving,oradayofremembranceofatragicevent)? 3. Mightastudent,family,orstaffmembernotbeabletoparticipateinaschoolactivityduringorafterschoolasaresultofthisday?(e.g.,Manyofour studentsdonotparticipateinhalloweenorvalentinesday.therearestudents,familiesandstaffwhocannotparticipateindistrict/schoolevents thatarescheduledontheeveningofanimportantreligiousdayobservedbythejewishandmuslimcommunities.) 4. Doesthedayprovideopportunityforateachablemomentregardingethnicorculturaldiversitythatmightnototherwisebediscussed,particularly thosedatesassociatedwithacontinuedhistoryofoppression,discrimination,orracism?
