1 PRESENTATION OF THE FIRST FRUITS PRESENTATION OF THE THIRD-YEAR TITHE NARRATIVE INTERLUDE DEUTERONOMY 26:1-19

2 PRESENTATION OF THE FIRST FRUITS PRESENTATION OF THE THIRD-YEAR TITHE NARRATIVE INTERLUDE Text: Deuteronomy 26:1-19, 1. When you enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you occupy it and live in it, 2. you must take the first of all the ground s produce you harvest from the land the Lord your God is giving you, place it in a basket, and go to the place where he chooses to locate his name. 3. You must go to the priest in office at that time and say to him, I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord promised to our ancestors to give us. 4. The priest will then take the basket from you and set it before the altar of the Lord your God. 5. Then you must affirm before the Lord your God, A wandering Aramean was my ancestor, and he went down to Egypt and lived there as a foreigner with a household few in number, but there he became a great, powerful, and numerous people. 6. But the Egyptians mistreated and oppressed us, forcing us to do burdensome labor.

So we cried out to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and he heard us and saw our humiliation, toil, and oppression. 8. Therefore the Lord brought us out of Egypt with tremendous strength and power, as well as with great awe-inspiring signs and wonders. 9. Then he brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10. So now, look! I have brought the first of the ground s produce that you, Lord, have given me. Then you must set it down before the Lord your God and worship before him. 11. You will celebrate all the good things that the Lord your God has given you and your family, along with the Levites and the resident foreigners among you. 12. When you finish tithing all your income in the third year (the year of tithing), you must give it to the Levites, the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows so that they may eat to their satisfaction in your villages. 13. Then you shall say before the Lord your God, I have removed the sacred offering from my house and given it to the Levites, the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows just as you have commanded me. I have not violated or forgotten your commandments. 14. I have not eaten anything when I was in mourning, or removed any of it while ceremonially unclean, or offered any of it to the dead; I have obeyed you and have done everything you have commanded me. 15. Look down from your holy dwelling place in heaven and bless your people Israel and the land you have given us, just as you promised our ancestors a land flowing with milk and honey.

Today the Lord your God is commanding you to keep these statutes and ordinances, something you must do with all your heart and soul. 17. Today you have declared the Lord to be your God, and that you will walk in his ways, keep his statutes, commandments, and ordinances, and obey him. 18. And today the Lord has declared you to be his special people (as he already promised you) so you may keep all his commandments. 19. Then he will elevate you above all the nations he has made and you will receive praise, fame, and honor. You will be a people holy to the Lord your God, as he has said. (NET) Introduction: I. Hamilton noted that Deuteronomy 26 has three (3) parts; viz.,... A. the basic law (verses 1-11),... B. an appendix (verses 12-15), and... C. an exhortation to keep the law (verses 16-19). II. Smith wrote, Two ceremonies were to be held as soon as Israel had taken possession of the land and had made the transition to agricultural life; viz.,... A. the offering of the firstfruits, and... B. the third year, triennial tithe.

5 III. Tithes and gifts of firstfruits had to do with counteracting coveting, addressing the need to be good stewards of what God had given his people and acknowledment of the fact that God owns everything. (See Hall.) A. Hall further wrote that tithes and gifts of firstfruits which belonged to God were to be returned to the Lord and shared with the needy. IV. Coffman wrote that chapter 26 is the conclusion of the Second Address of Moses which began in Deuteronomy 4:44. A. Moses followed the ancient format of suzerainty treaties in the organization of Deuteronomy, Coffman advised. 1. This treaty was between God and Israel. V. Coffman outlines Deuteronomy 26 as follows:... A. Presentation of the first-fruits and tithes (verses 1-11),... B. The third year tithing, (verses 12-15) and... C. The formal ratification of the treaty (verses 16-19).

6 Commentary: PRESENTATION OF THE FIRST FRUITS Deuteronomy 26:1, When you enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you occupy it and live in it, (NET) I. When you enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you occupy it and live in it,... A. Related references: Deuteronomy 8:11-20, Be sure you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today. When you eat your fill, when you build and occupy good houses, when your cattle and flocks increase, when you have plenty of silver and gold, and when you have abundance of everything, be sure you do not feel self-important and forget the Lord your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery, and who brought you through the great, fearful desert of venomous serpents and scorpions, an arid place with no water. He made water flow from a flint rock and fed you in the desert with manna (which your ancestors had never before known) so that he might by humbling you test you and eventually bring good to you. Be careful not to say, My own ability and skill have gotten me this wealth. You must

7 remember the Lord your God, for he is the one who gives ability to get wealth; if you do this he will confirm his covenant that he made by oath to your ancestors, even as he has to this day. Now if you forget the Lord your God at all and follow other gods, worshiping and prostrating yourselves before them, I testify to you today that you will surely be annihilated. Just like the nations the Lord is about to destroy from your sight, so he will do to you because you would not obey him. (NET) 2. Deuteronomy 11:31, For you are about to cross the Jordan to possess the land the Lord your God is giving you, and you will possess and inhabit it. (NET) 3. Deuteronomy 12:10, When you do go across the Jordan River and settle in the land he is granting you as an inheritance and you find relief from all the enemies who surround you, you will live in safety. (NET) 4. Deuteronomy 17:14, When you come to the land the Lord your God is giving you and take it over and live in it and then say, I will select a king like all the nations surrounding me, (NET) 5. Deuteronomy 19:1, When the Lord your God destroys the nations whose land he is about to give you and you dispossess them and settle in their cities and houses, (NET)

8 B. The first tithe addressed in verses 1-11 is referenced in Deuteronomy 14:22-27, You must be certain to tithe all the produce of your seed that comes from the field year after year. In the presence of the Lord your God you must eat from the tithe of your grain, your new wine, your olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the place he chooses to locate his name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always. When he blesses you, if the place where he chooses to locate his name is distant, you may convert the tithe into money, secure the money, and travel to the place the Lord your God chooses for himself. Then you may spend the money however you wish for cattle, sheep, wine, beer, or whatever you desire. You and your household may eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and enjoy it. As for the Levites in your villages, you must not ignore them, for they have no allotment or inheritance along with you. (NET) Deuteronomy 26:2, you must take the first of all the ground s produce you harvest from the land the Lord your God is giving you, place it in a basket, and go to the place where he chooses to locate his name. (NET) I. you must take the first of all the ground s produce you harvest from the land the Lord your God is giving you,... A. Hall noted that the gifts of firstfruits and the three year tithes functioned as an expansion of previous regulations. 1. Deuteronomy 18:4, You must give them the best of your grain, new wine, and olive oil, as

9 well as the best of your wool when you shear your flocks. (NET) 2. Deuteronomy 14:22-29, You must be certain to tithe all the produce of your seed that comes from the field year after year. At the end of every three years you must bring all the tithe of your produce, in that very year, and you must store it up in your villages. Then the Levites (because they have no allotment or inheritance with you), the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows of your villages may come and eat their fill so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work you do. (NET)

10 B. The observance of these commandments, when Moses spoke, were several years in the future because first the land would have to be conquered, crops planted and brought to maturity. (See Hall.) 1. Hall further explained that the offering of firstfruits included a donation of every crop harvested. a. Deuteronomy 8:8, 13, a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, of olive trees and honey, when your cattle and flocks increase, when you have plenty of silver and gold, and when you have abundance of everything, (NET) b. Hall stated that these crops included wheat, barley, vineyards, figs, pomegranates, olives, herds and flocks would mature at different times and offerings were made several times a year at the harvesting of each crop. 2. The land belonged to the Lord and anything grown on it belonged to the Lord. Offerings acknowledged this fact. (See Hall.) a. Leviticus 25:23, The land must not be sold without reclaim because the land belongs to me, for you are foreigners and residents with me. (NET) b. Deuteronomy 28:4-12, Your children will be blessed, as well as the produce of your

11 soil, the offspring of your livestock, the calves of your herds, and the lambs of your flocks. Your basket and your mixing bowl will be blessed. You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. The Lord will cause your enemies who attack you to be struck down before you; they will attack you from one direction but flee from you in seven different directions. The Lord will decree blessing for you with respect to your barns and in everything you do yes, he will bless you in the land he is giving you. The Lord will designate you as his holy people just as he promised you, if you keep his commandments and obey him. Then all the peoples of the earth will see that you belong to the Lord, and they will respect you. The Lord will greatly multiply your children, the offspring of your livestock, and the produce of your soil in the land which he promised your ancestors he would give you. The Lord will open for you his good treasure house, the heavens, to give you rain for the land in its season and to bless all you do; you will lend to many nations but you will not borrow from any. (NET) c. Exodus 23:19, The first of the firstfruits of your soil you must bring to the house of the Lord your God. You must not cook a young goat in its mother s milk. (NET)

12 d. Exodus 34:26, The first of the firstfruits of your soil you must bring to the house of the Lord your God. You must not cook a young goat in its mother s milk. (NET) e. Leviticus 23:9-14, The Lord spoke to Moses: Speak to the Israelites and tell them, When you enter the land that I am about to give to you and you gather in its harvest, then you must bring the sheaf of the first portion of your harvest to the priest, and he must wave the sheaf before the Lord to be accepted for your benefit on the day after the Sabbath the priest is to wave it. On the day you wave the sheaf you must also offer a flawless yearling lamb for a burnt offering to the Lord, along with its grain offering, two tenths of an ephah of choice wheat flour mixed with olive oil, as a gift to the Lord, a soothing aroma, and its drink offering, one fourth of a hin of wine. You must not eat bread, roasted grain, or fresh grain until this very day, until you bring the offering of your God. This is a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all the places where you live. (NET) f. Numbers 18:11-14, And this is yours: the raised offering of their gift, along with all the wave offerings of the Israelites. I have

13 given them to you and to your sons and daughters with you as a perpetual ordinance. Everyone who is ceremonially clean in your household may eat of it. All the best of the olive oil and all the best of the wine and of the wheat, the first fruits of these things that they give to the Lord, I have given to you. And whatever first ripe fruit in their land they bring to the Lord will be yours; everyone who is ceremonially clean in your household may eat of it. Everything devoted in Israel will be yours. (NET) C. Gifts of firstfruits were associated with the Feast of Weeks, the Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Feast of Tabernacles. (See Hall.) 1. Exodus 34:22, You must observe the Feast of Weeks the firstfruits of the harvest of wheat and the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year. (NET) 2. Leviticus 23:15-22, You must count for yourselves seven weeks from the day after the Sabbath, from the day you bring the wave offering sheaf; they must be complete weeks. You must count fifty days until the day after the seventh Sabbath and then you must present a new grain offering to the Lord. From the places where you live you must bring two loaves of bread for a wave offering; they must be made

14 from two tenths of an ephah of fine wheat flour, baked with yeast, as first fruits to the Lord. Along with the loaves of bread, you must also present seven flawless yearling lambs, one young bull, and two rams. They are to be a burnt offering to the Lord along with their grain offering and drink offerings, a gift of a soothing aroma to the Lord. You must also offer one male goat for a sin offering and two yearling lambs for a peace offering sacrifice, and the priest is to wave them the two lambs along with the bread of the first fruits, as a wave offering before the Lord; they will be holy to the Lord for the priest. On this very day you must proclaim an assembly; it is to be a holy assembly for you. You must not do any regular work. This is a perpetual statute in all the places where you live throughout your generations. When you gather in the harvest of your land, you must not completely harvest the corner of your field, and you must not gather up the gleanings of your harvest. You must leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God. (NET) 3. Numbers 28:26, Also, on the day of the first fruits, when you bring a new grain offering to the Lord during your Feast of Weeks, you are to have a holy assembly. You must do no ordinary work. (NET) 4. Leviticus 23:4-14, These are the Lord s appointed times, holy assemblies, which you

15 must proclaim at their appointed time. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, is a Passover offering to the Lord. Then on the fifteenth day of the same month will be the festival of unleavened bread to the Lord; seven days you must eat unleavened bread. On the first day there will be a holy assembly for you; you must not do any regular work. You must present a gift to the Lord for seven days, and the seventh day is a holy assembly; you must not do any regular work. The Lord spoke to Moses: Speak to the Israelites and tell them, When you enter the land that I am about to give to you and you gather in its harvest, then you must bring the sheaf of the first portion of your harvest to the priest, and he must wave the sheaf before the Lord to be accepted for your benefit on the day after the Sabbath the priest is to wave it. (NET)

Deuteronomy 16:13, You must celebrate the Festival of Temporary Shelters for seven days, at the time of the grain and grape harvest. (NET) 6. Hall wrote that most firstfruits were offered during the Feast of Weeks due to its being scheduled during the time of the major harvest. D. Giving the firstfruits to God was intended to keep Israel in remembrance of the kindnesses shown them in their deliverance from Egypt, in the wilderness and in the soon conquest of Canaan. The Lord is the author of every good and perfect gift. (See Clarke.) II. place it in a basket, and go to the place where he chooses to locate his name. A. The service was to take place at the central sanctuary, the place where he chooses to locate his name. 1. The tabernacle was located at various places before the temple was constructed in Jerusalem. 2. The Israelites were to take these offerings to the place of central worship wherever that was at the time. B. Smith summarizes verses 1-11 as follows: The firstfruits of Canaan were to be placed in a basket and taken to the place where the ark of the covenant/tabernacle was located at the time.

17 a. Numbers 18:12, All the best of the olive oil and all the best of the wine and of the wheat, the first fruits of these things that they give to the Lord, I have given to you. (NET) b. Deuteronomy 18:4, You must give them the best of your grain, new wine, and olive oil, as well as the best of your wool when you shear your flocks. (NET) 2. The worshiper was to declare that:... a. he had arrived in the land which God had promised to his ancestors. b. his ancestors had become a great nation in Egypt. c. God had heard the cries of his oppressed people in Egypt. d. the Lord had delivered his people with his mighty hand. e. God had brought them to the land flowing with milk and honey. f. God had given them the firstfruits of the soil.

After reciting this litany of praise, the worshiper, his household and invited guests (foreigners, Levites) were to join in the celebration, Smith wrote. D. What is said here is an abbreviated statement as to what was to be done, not a meticulous step by step set of directions as to how it was to be done. (Coffman) E. The firstfruits were to be offered at the location of the Tabernacle at the time and given to the priest there. (See The Pulpit Commentary.) Deuteronomy 26:3, You must go to the priest in office at that time and say to him, I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord promised to our ancestors to give us. (NET) I. You must go to the priest in office at that time and say to him,... A. The contribution was to be presented to the priest and a recitation of the saving deeds of God was to follow, Hamilton advised. B. The Pulpit Commentary stated the priest was the priest on duty at the time of the offering, not necessarily the High Priest. II. I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord promised to our ancestors to give us.

19 A. Hamilton wrote, Deuteronomy draws a close connection between what God had done and what Israel should do. 1. God had promised and provided. The people, heirs of the promise, by their recitations associated with their tithes and offerings acknowledged this fact. (See Hall.) 2. Israel was not to confuse what God had done with what the Canaanites claimed for their fertility gods. (See Hall.) a. Deuteronomy 7:1-6, When the Lord your God brings you to the land that you are going to occupy and forces out many nations before you Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and powerful than you and he delivers them over to you and you attack them, you must utterly annihilate them. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy! You must not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, for they will turn your sons away from me to worship other gods. Then the anger of the Lord will erupt against you and he will quickly destroy you. Instead, this is what you must do to them: You must tear down their altars, shatter their sacred pillars, cut down their sacred Asherah poles, and burn up their idols. For you are a people holy to

20 the Lord your God. He has chosen you to be his people, prized above all others on the face of the earth. (NET) b. Deuteronomy 12:1-3, These are the statutes and ordinances you must be careful to obey as long as you live in the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has given you to possess. You must by all means destroy all the places where the nations you are about to dispossess worship their gods on the high mountains and hills and under every leafy tree. You must tear down their altars, shatter their sacred pillars, burn up their sacred Asherah poles, and cut down the images of their gods; you must eliminate their very memory from that place. (NET) Deuteronomy 26:4, The priest will then take the basket from you and set it before the altar of the Lord your God. (NET) I. The priest will then take the basket from you and set it before the altar of the Lord your God. A. The worshiper was to give the basket filled with firstfruits to the priest who in turn would take the basket and set it before the altar of the Lord. Deuteronomy 26:5, Then you must affirm before the Lord your God, A wandering Aramean was my ancestor, and he went down to Egypt and lived there as a foreigner with

21 a household few in number, but there he became a great, powerful, and numerous people. (NET) I. Then you must affirm before the Lord your God,... A. The Israelites bringing the firstfruits were to make a solemn affirmation, declaration regarding their history and future expectations giving God the credit for all their blessings. II. A wandering Aramean* was my ancestor, and he went down to Egypt and lived there as a foreigner with a household few in number,... A. *NET Footnote: Referring to Jacob, whose mother Rebekah was an Aramean. 1. Genesis 24:10-61, Then the servant took ten of his master s camels and departed with all kinds of gifts from his master at his disposal. He journeyed to the region of Aram Naharaim and the city of Nahor. He made the camels kneel down by the well outside the city. It was evening, the time when the women would go out to draw water. He prayed, O Lord, God of my master Abraham, guide me today. Be faithful to my master Abraham. Here I am, standing by the spring, and the daughters of the people who live in the town are coming out to draw water. I will say to a young woman, Please lower your jar so I may drink. May the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac reply, Drink, and I ll give

22 your camels water too. In this way I will know that you have been faithful to my master. Before he had finished praying, there came Rebekah with her water jug on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah (Milcah was the wife of Abraham s brother Nahor). Now the young woman was very beautiful. She was a virgin; no man had ever had sexual relations with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jug, and came back up. Abraham s servant ran to meet her and said, Please give me a sip of water from your jug. Drink, my lord, she replied, and quickly lowering her jug to her hands, she gave him a drink. When she had done so, she said, I ll draw water for your camels too, until they have drunk as much as they want. She quickly emptied her jug into the watering trough and ran back to the well to draw more water until she had drawn enough for all his camels. Silently the man watched her with interest to determine if the Lord had made his journey successful or not. After the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels and gave them to her. Whose daughter are you? he asked. Tell me, is there room in your father s house for us to spend the night? She said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom Milcah bore to Nahor. We have plenty of straw and feed, she added, and room for you to spend the night. The man bowed his

23 head and worshiped the Lord, saying Praised be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his faithful love for my master! The Lord has led me to the house of my master s relatives! The young woman ran and told her mother s household all about these things. (Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban.) Laban rushed out to meet the man at the spring. When he saw the bracelets on his sister s wrists and the nose ring and heard his sister Rebekah say, This is what the man said to me, he went out to meet the man. There he was, standing by the camels near the spring. Laban said to him, Come, you who are blessed by the Lord! Why are you standing out here when I have prepared the house and a place for the camels? So Abraham s servant went to the house and unloaded the camels. Straw and feed were given to the camels, and water was provided so that he and the men who were with him could wash their feet. When food was served, he said, I will not eat until I have said what I want to say. Tell us, Laban said. I am the servant of Abraham, he began. The Lord has richly blessed my master and he has become very wealthy. The Lord has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys. My master s wife Sarah bore a son to him when she was old, and my master has given him everything he owns. My master made me swear an oath. He said, You must not acquire a wife for my son from the

24 daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, but you must go to the family of my father and to my relatives to find a wife for my son. But I said to my master, What if the woman does not want to go with me? He answered, The Lord, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you. He will make your journey a success and you will find a wife for my son from among my relatives, from my father s family. You will be free from your oath if you go to my relatives and they will not give her to you. Then you will be free from your oath. When I came to the spring today, I prayed, O Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you have decided to make my journey successful, may events unfold as follows: Here I am, standing by the spring. When the young woman goes out to draw water, I ll say, Give me a little water to drink from your jug. Then she will reply to me, Drink, and I ll draw water for your camels too. May that woman be the one whom the Lord has chosen for my master s son. Before I finished praying in my heart, along came Rebekah with her water jug on her shoulder! She went down to the spring and drew water. So I said to her, Please give me a drink. She quickly lowered her jug from her shoulder and said, Drink, and I ll give your camels water too. So I drank, and she also gave the camels water. Then I asked her, Whose daughter are you? She replied, The daughter of Bethuel the son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to Nahor. I put the ring in her nose and the

25 bracelets on her wrists. Then I bowed down and worshiped the Lord. I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right path to find the granddaughter of my master s brother for his son. Now, if you will show faithful love to my master, tell me. But if not, tell me as well, so that I may go on my way. Then Laban and Bethuel replied, This is the Lord s doing. Our wishes are of no concern. Rebekah stands here before you. Take her and go so that she may become the wife of your master s son, just as the Lord has decided. When Abraham s servant heard their words, he bowed down to the ground before the Lord. Then he brought out gold, silver jewelry, and clothing and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave valuable gifts to her brother and to her mother. After this, he and the men who were with him ate a meal and stayed there overnight. When they got up in the morning, he said, Let me leave now so I can return to my master. But Rebekah s brother and her mother replied, Let the girl stay with us a few more days, perhaps ten. Then she can go. But he said to them, Don t detain me the Lord has granted me success on my journey. Let me leave now so I may return to my master. Then they said, We ll call the girl and find out what she wants to do. So they called Rebekah and asked her, Do you want to go with this man? She replied, I want to go. So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, accompanied by her female attendant, with

26 Abraham s servant and his men. They blessed Rebekah with these words: Our sister, may you become the mother of thousands of ten thousands! May your descendants possess the strongholds of their enemies. Then Rebekah and her female servants mounted the camels and rode away with the man. So Abraham s servant took Rebekah and left. (NET) 2. Genesis 25:20, 26, When Isaac was forty years old, he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean. When his brother came out with his hand clutching Esau s heel, they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born. (NET) B. Hamilton reported Arameans appear in Mesopotamian records about 1100 B.C.E. and later formed several kingdoms in what today is Syria. 1. Genesis 11:31-32, Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot (the son of Haran), and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram s wife, and with them he set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. When they came to Haran, they settled there. The lifetime of Terah was 205 years, and he died in Haran. (NET) 2. Aramea was initially a term for northwest Mesopotamia. (Hall)

Later Aramea applied to a more restricted area in the area of Syria. (Hall) C. The reading here using the word wandering could refer to Jacob s rootless and landless existence as compared with Israel s being settled in a land flowing with milk and honey. (See Hall.) D. Hall stated that the preferred reading is a perishing Aramean which refers to Jacob s precarious existence because of the famine that drove him from Canaan into Egypt. 1. Genesis 42:1-2, to his sons, Why are you looking at each other? He then said, Look, I hear that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy grain for us so that we may live and not die. (NET) 2. Genesis 43:1-2, Now the famine was severe in the land. When they finished eating the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, Return, buy us a little more food. (NET) 3. Genesis 47:4, Then they said to Pharaoh, We have come to live as temporary residents in the land. There is no pasture for your servants flocks because the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. So now, please let your servants live in the land of Goshen. (NET)

The Israelite recitations contrasted their prosperity with their ancestors adversities. (See Hall.) E. Coffman quoting Kline wrote, The patriarchs were Aramean geographically, although not racially, because of Jacob s long residence in Paddan-Aram. 1. Genesis 31:17, So Jacob immediately put his children and his wives on the camels. (NET) 2. Laban the Syrian endeavored to destroy Jacob. (Clarke) 3. Jacob was a wandering Aramean (Syrian) due to his sojourn with Laban in Mesopotamia. (See Clarke.) F. Jacob sojourned in the land of the eastern people, Arameans, Mesopotamians, Syrians. (See The Pulpit Commentary.) 1. Genesis 29:1-35, So Jacob moved on and came to the land of the eastern people. He saw in the field a well with three flocks of sheep lying beside it, because the flocks were watered from that well. Now a large stone covered the mouth of the well. When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone off the mouth of the well and water the sheep. Then they would put the stone back in its place over the well s mouth. Jacob asked them, My brothers, where are you from? They replied, We re from Haran. So he said to them, Do you

29 know Laban, the grandson of Nahor? We know him, they said. Is he well? Jacob asked. They replied, He is well. Now look, here comes his daughter Rachel with the sheep. Then Jacob said, Since it is still the middle of the day, it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. You should water the sheep and then go and let them graze some more. We can t, they said, until all the flocks are gathered and the stone is rolled off the mouth of the well. Then we water the sheep. While he was still speaking with them, Rachel arrived with her father s sheep, for she was tending them. When Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of his uncle Laban, and the sheep of his uncle Laban, he went over and rolled the stone off the mouth of the well and watered the sheep of his uncle Laban. Then Jacob kissed Rachel and began to weep loudly. When Jacob explained to Rachel that he was a relative of her father and the son of Rebekah, she ran and told her father. When Laban heard this news about Jacob, his sister s son, he rushed out to meet him. He embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban how he was related to him. Then Laban said to him, You are indeed my own flesh and blood. So Jacob stayed with him for a month. Then Laban said to Jacob, Should you work for me for nothing because you are my relative? Tell me what your wages should be. (Now Laban had two daughters; the older one was named Leah, and the younger one Rachel. Leah s eyes were

30 tender, but Rachel had a lovely figure and beautiful appearance.) Since Jacob had fallen in love with Rachel, he said, I ll serve you seven years in exchange for your younger daughter Rachel. Laban replied, I d rather give her to you than to another man. Stay with me. So Jacob worked for seven years to acquire Rachel. But they seemed like only a few days to him because his love for her was so great. Finally Jacob said to Laban, Give me my wife, for my time of service is up. I want to have marital relations with her. So Laban invited all the people of that place and prepared a feast. In the evening he brought his daughter Leah to Jacob, and Jacob had marital relations with her. (Laban gave his female servant Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her servant.) In the morning Jacob discovered it was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, What in the world have you done to me! Didn t I work for you in exchange for Rachel? Why have you tricked me? It is not our custom here, Laban replied, to give the younger daughter in marriage before the firstborn. Complete my older daughter s bridal week. Then we will give you the younger one too, in exchange for seven more years of work. Jacob did as Laban said. When Jacob completed Leah s bridal week, Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife. (Laban gave his female servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.) Jacob had marital relations with Rachel as well. He loved Rachel more than Leah, so he worked for

31 Laban for seven more years. When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, he enabled her to become pregnant while Rachel remained childless. So Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, The Lord has looked with pity on my oppressed condition. Surely my husband will love me now. She became pregnant again and had another son. She said, Because the Lord heard that I was unloved, he gave me this one too. So she named him Simeon. She became pregnant again and had another son. She said, Now this time my husband will show me affection, because I have given birth to three sons for him. That is why he was named Levi. She became pregnant again and had another son. She said, This time I will praise the Lord. That is why she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children. (NET) 2. Genesis 30:1-43, When Rachel saw that she could not give Jacob children, she became jealous of her sister. She said to Jacob, Give me children or I ll die! Jacob became furious with Rachel and exclaimed, Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children? She replied, Here is my servant Bilhah! Have sexual relations with her so that she can bear children for me and I can have a family through her. So Rachel gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob had marital relations with her. Bilhah became pregnant and gave Jacob a son. Then

32 Rachel said, God has vindicated me. He has responded to my prayer and given me a son. That is why she named him Dan. Bilhah, Rachel s servant, became pregnant again and gave Jacob another son. Then Rachel said, I have fought a desperate struggle with my sister, but I have won. So she named him Naphtali. When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she gave her servant Zilpah to Jacob as a wife. Soon Leah s servant Zilpah gave Jacob a son. Leah said, How fortunate! So she named him Gad. Then Leah s servant Zilpah gave Jacob another son. Leah said, How happy I am, for women will call me happy! So she named him Asher. At the time of the wheat harvest Reuben went out and found some mandrake plants in a field and brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, Give me some of your son s mandrakes. But Leah replied, Wasn t it enough that you ve taken away my husband? Would you take away my son s mandrakes too? All right, Rachel said, he may sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son s mandrakes. When Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, You must sleep with me because I have paid for your services with my son s mandrakes. So he had marital relations with her that night. God paid attention to Leah; she became pregnant and gave Jacob a son for the fifth time. Then Leah said, God has granted me a reward because I gave my servant to my husband as a wife. So she named him Issachar.

33 Leah became pregnant again and gave Jacob a son for the sixth time. Then Leah said, God has given me a good gift. Now my husband will honor me because I have given him six sons. So she named him Zebulun. After that she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah. Then God took note of Rachel. He paid attention to her and enabled her to become pregnant. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son. Then she said, God has taken away my shame. She named him Joseph, saying, May the Lord give me yet another son. After Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, Send me on my way so that I can go home to my own country. Let me take my wives and my children whom I have acquired by working for you. Then I ll depart, because you know how hard I ve worked for you. But Laban said to him, If I have found favor in your sight, please stay here, for I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me on account of you. He added, Just name your wages I ll pay whatever you want. You know how I have worked for you, Jacob replied, and how well your livestock have fared under my care. Indeed, you had little before I arrived, but now your possessions have increased many times over. The Lord has blessed you wherever I worked. But now, how long must it be before I do something for my own family too? So Laban asked, What should I give you? You don t need to give me a thing, Jacob replied, but if you agree to this one condition, I

34 will continue to care for your flocks and protect them: Let me walk among all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb, and the spotted or speckled goats. These animals will be my wages. My integrity will testify for me later on. When you come to verify that I ve taken only the wages we agreed on, if I have in my possession any goat that is not speckled or spotted or any sheep that is not dark-colored, it will be considered stolen. Agreed! said Laban, It will be as you say. So that day Laban removed the male goats that were streaked or spotted, all the female goats that were speckled or spotted (all that had any white on them), and all the darkcolored lambs, and put them in the care of his sons. Then he separated them from Jacob by a three-day journey, while Jacob was taking care of the rest of Laban s flocks. But Jacob took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond, and plane trees. He made white streaks by peeling them, making the white inner wood in the branches visible. Then he set up the peeled branches in all the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink. He set up the branches in front of the flocks when they were in heat and came to drink. When the sheep mated in front of the branches, they gave birth to young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. Jacob removed these lambs, but he made the rest of the flock face the streaked and completely dark-colored animals in Laban s flock. So he made separate

35 flocks for himself and did not mix them with Laban s flocks. When the stronger females were in heat, Jacob would set up the branches in the troughs in front of the flock, so they would mate near the branches. But if the animals were weaker, he did not set the branches there. So the weaker animals ended up belonging to Laban and the stronger animals to Jacob. In this way Jacob became extremely prosperous. He owned large flocks, male and female servants, camels, and donkeys. (NET) 3. Genesis 31:1-55, Jacob heard that Laban s sons were complaining, Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father! He has gotten rich at our father s expense! When Jacob saw the look on Laban s face, he could tell his attitude toward him had changed. The Lord said to Jacob, Return to the land of your fathers and to your relatives. I will be with you. So Jacob sent a message for Rachel and Leah to come to the field where his flocks were. There he said to them, I can tell that your father s attitude toward me has changed, but the God of my father has been with me. You know that I ve worked for your father as hard as I could, but your father has humiliated me and changed my wages ten times. But God has not permitted him to do me any harm. If he said, The speckled animals will be your wage, then the entire flock gave birth to speckled offspring. But if he said, The streaked animals will be your wage, then

36 the entire flock gave birth to streaked offspring. In this way God has snatched away your father s livestock and given them to me. Once during breeding season I saw in a dream that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled, and spotted. In the dream the angel of God said to me, Jacob! Here I am! I replied. Then he said, Observe that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled, or spotted, for I have observed all that Laban has done to you. I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the sacred stone and made a vow to me. Now leave this land immediately and return to your native land. Then Rachel and Leah replied to him, Do we still have any portion or inheritance in our father s house? Hasn t he treated us like foreigners? He not only sold us, but completely wasted the money paid for us! Surely all the wealth that God snatched away from our father belongs to us and to our children. So now do everything God has told you. So Jacob immediately put his children and his wives on the camels. He took away all the livestock he had acquired in Paddan Aram and all his moveable property that he had accumulated. Then he set out toward the land of Canaan to return to his father Isaac. While Laban had gone to shear his sheep, Rachel stole the household idols that belonged to her father. Jacob also deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was leaving. He left with all he owned. He quickly crossed the Euphrates River and

37 headed for the hill country of Gilead. Three days later Laban discovered Jacob had left. So he took his relatives with him and pursued Jacob for seven days. He caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead. But God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and warned him, Be careful that you neither bless nor curse Jacob. Laban overtook Jacob, and when Jacob pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead, Laban and his relatives set up camp there too. What have you done? Laban demanded of Jacob. You ve deceived me and carried away my daughters as if they were captives of war! Why did you run away secretly and deceive me? Why didn t you tell me so I could send you off with a celebration complete with singing, tambourines, and harps? You didn t even allow me to kiss my daughters and my grandchildren goodbye. You have acted foolishly! I have the power to do you harm, but the God of your father told me last night, Be careful that you neither bless nor curse Jacob. Now I understand that you have gone away because you longed desperately for your father s house. Yet why did you steal my gods? I left secretly because I was afraid! Jacob replied to Laban. I thought you might take your daughters away from me by force. Whoever has taken your gods will be put to death! In the presence of our relatives identify whatever is yours and take it. (Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.) So Laban entered Jacob s tent, and Leah s tent, and

38 the tent of the two female servants, but he did not find the idols. Then he left Leah s tent and entered Rachel s. (Now Rachel had taken the idols and put them inside her camel s saddle and sat on them.) Laban searched the whole tent, but did not find them. Rachel said to her father, Don t be angry, my lord. I cannot stand up in your presence because I am having my period. So he searched thoroughly, but did not find the idols. Jacob became angry and argued with Laban. What did I do wrong? he demanded of Laban. What sin of mine prompted you to chase after me in hot pursuit? When you searched through all my goods, did you find anything that belonged to you? Set it here before my relatives and yours, and let them settle the dispute between the two of us! I have been with you for the past twenty years. Your ewes and female goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. Animals torn by wild beasts I never brought to you; I always absorbed the loss myself. You always made me pay for every missing animal, whether it was taken by day or at night. I was consumed by scorching heat during the day and by piercing cold at night, and I went without sleep. This was my lot for twenty years in your house: I worked like a slave for you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks, but you changed my wages ten times! If the God of my father the God of Abraham, the one whom Isaac fears had not been with me, you would certainly have sent

39 me away empty-handed! But God saw how I was oppressed and how hard I worked, and he rebuked you last night. Laban replied to Jacob, These women are my daughters, these children are my grandchildren, and these flocks are my flocks. All that you see belongs to me. But how can I harm these daughters of mine today or the children to whom they have given birth? So now, come, let s make a formal agreement, you and I, and it will be proof that we have made peace. So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a memorial pillar. Then he said to his relatives, Gather stones. So they brought stones and put them in a pile. They ate there by the pile of stones. Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, but Jacob called it Galeed. Laban said, This pile of stones is a witness of our agreement today. That is why it was called Galeed. It was also called Mizpah because he said, May the Lord watch between us when we are out of sight of one another. If you mistreat my daughters or if you take wives besides my daughters, although no one else is with us, realize that God is witness to your actions. Here is this pile of stones and this pillar I have set up between me and you, Laban said to Jacob. This pile of stones and the pillar are reminders that I will not pass beyond this pile to come to harm you and that you will not pass beyond this pile and this pillar to come to harm me. May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor, the gods of their father, judge between us. Jacob took an oath by the God
