1 3.4 The Promised Land Key Concept The death of Moses marks the end of the Torah. The Children of Israel enter the Promised Land. They go from a loose confederation of tribes to an empire. Key Terms Judge Temple Messiah Outline Joshua A. Upon the death of Moses, Joshua becomes the leader of the Children of Israel. 1. The story of his leadership is the story of the conquest and occupation of the Promised Land. 2. The presentation of conquest is much simplified serving less as an historic record and more as a testimony that God keeps His promises. B. The Children of Israel entered the Promised Land by crossing the Jordan River. 1. The waters dried up permitting the crossing to occur on dry land. 2. The priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant led the way. 3. After the crossing, they made camp. Twelve stones were erected to mark the place of crossing. 4. The Children of Israel celebrated the Passover. 5. The men of Israel performed ritual circumcision in preparation for battle. C. Conquest 1. The power of God animates the Israelites who succeed in conquering the Promised Land. 2. They take no prisoners killing all of the native inhabitants including the cattle. D. Division of the Promised Land 1. The sons of Israel name the Twelve Tribes on the map of the Promised Land with a couple of exceptions. 2. The Levites are a priest class and have no territory of their own. 3. No territory bears the name Joseph, but two of his sons who were adopted by Jacob do have territory Ephraim and Manasseh 8/dont_be_a_little_piggy

2 Judges A. The Book of Judges covers a two hundred year period following the death of Joshua and his generation. 1. Israel is a loss confederation of tribes. 2. There is no central government. B. Judge refers to heroes raised by God in order to save the Children of Israel for destruction. Each of the stories of the Judges follows the same basic pattern. 1. Israel sins idolatry 2. God punishes 3. Israel repents 4. God forgives and save them through a judge. C. Notable Judges 1. Samson 2. Gideon 3. Deborah Samuel A. The Ark of the Covenant stayed at Shiloh the religious capital of the Children of Israel. 1. The Children of Israel began to drift away from the covenant. They incorporated aspects of the worship of Baal. 2. The Philistines grew in power threatening the Israelites. a. The Philistines destroyed the capital at Shiloh and captured the Ark of the Covenant. b. The Israelites recovered the Ark seven months later. B. Samuel reluctantly appointed a king Saul. David A. While still a youth, David accepted a pre-battle challenge from a Philistine warrior named Goliath. 1. Using his shepherd s slingshot he knocked Goliath out. 2. He then used Goliath s own sword to kill him. 3. David became a national hero and Saul grew jealous. B. After Saul s death in battle, Samuel anoints David as king. 1. David makes Jerusalem the national political and religious capital. a. He moves the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. b. David decides to build a temple to house the Ark of the Covenant.

3 c. A Temple is a place reserved for the worship of God. 2. The prophet Nathan tells David that from his dynasty will come a Messiah an anointed one to continue forever. C. David had an affair with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, one of his soldiers. Solomon fulfilled David s promise and built the Temple. 1. It was built without metal tools because metal is associated with war. 2. When the temple was completed, the Ark of the Covenant was moved into the Temple. C. Israel became a major power during Solomon s reign. 1. The king s court became affluent 2. He married foreign princess to cement political alliances and allowed them to build altars to idols. 3. God promised to punish Israel by destroying the nation except for one tribe Judah. 4.
