KEY PASSAGE: Exodus 32:8 3:45 4:00 CHECK IN / SNACKS / GAMES: One teacher take control of sign-in: Place the Check-In Sticker on Clipboard. If manually sign-in, give the parent a nametag containing their phone number and their child s name. They will use this for checkout. One teacher lead orderly free play. 4:00 4:10 ACTIVITY SHEET / ARRIVING ACTIVITY: Activity Sheet: Distribute activity pages and instruct the kids to complete the challenge. Arriving ACTIVITY: Simon Says Play a traditional game of Simon Says. Choose one child to start out the game as Simon. He will give a command, and the kids must do what he says as long as he says Simon says before the command. Kids must not do what he says if he does not say Simon says. After a few commands, choose a new Simon and play again. Continue playing until each kid has a turn being Simon. For younger kids, do not eliminate anyone out of the game for doing the wrong action. Say: Today we re going to learn that the Israelites made a big mistake. Moses told them to wait while he went up Mt. Sinai to talk with God, but the Israelites grew impatient. We ll see what happened when they disobeyed God. 4:10 4:15 CLEAN UP / GO OVER RULES & CONSEQUENCES: Rules are on the wall by the door 4:15 4:50 KIDS LIVE: Have the kids sit together. Keep an eye on them and the door for more kids. 4:50 5:00 CRAFT: Craft: The Golden calf Items Needed: Paper Plate, Calf Face Printout, Clothespins, Yellow Crayons. Instructions: (1Have kids fold paper plate in half. (2) Have kids clip clothespins on the bottom of paper plate for feet. (3) Have kids glue calf face on the front of the paper plate. (4) Have the kids color with yellow crayons. After the kids have spent time on their craft have them throw it away. Explain to them that when we love God we put him first in all we do and we do not have anything more important than our relationship with God. Say: When Moses was on the mountain, the Israelites gathered all of their gold and made a golden calf to worship. Aaron melted down the gold and formed it into a calf. They sinned against God. God punished His people for worshiping a golden calf. Today, we don t usually bow down to statues, but we aren t any better than the Israelites. We are guilty of sinning too! The Bible says that all people sin and all people need a Savior. God sent His Son, Jesus, to rescue us from sin and death. 5:00 5:10 BIBLE STORY REVIEW: Story: Read pages in The Action Bible Say: God s people sinned against God, and Moses asked God to forgive them. Tell them to put hands behind their back until you ask the question. The first person to hit the buzzer gets to answer (the) question. Award team 10 points if person answers correctly, if incorrect then the other team can steal the points. Pick new people each question. 1. How long did Moses spend on top of Mt. Sinai speaking with God? (40 days and 40 nights) 2. What did the Israelites make while Moses was on top of the mountain? (a golden calf to worship) 3. How did God react when He saw their sin? (God was angry and threatened to destroy them) 4. What did Moses ask God to do for the people? (forgive them) 5. How did God punish the people of God for their sin? (God sent a sickness on the people) Say: Remember the Main Point: Gods People worship a golden calf. (Have the kids repeat the main Point) Discussion Questions: Small Group Time The Goal is to get them talking about the lesson. Split the room up into 2 groups and each leader ask the questions giving time for a few kids to answer. 1. What did you learn about God from today s story? 2. What did you learn about people/yourself? 3. What is one thing you learned from this lesson that you can apply this week? Say: Remember the Main Point: God gave his people food and water. Exodus 32:8 Have them repeat after you or play a game to break verse up. *Use the Memory Verse teacher aid. 5:25 ENDING ACTIVITY / PARENT ARRIVAL: As the parents arrive Ending Activity: Worship God Parade Invite preschoolers to march with you as you play the unit theme song or another worship song. Invite preschoolers to pump their arms and lift their knees as they march. Children may also sidestep, hop, skip, twirl, or tiptoe. After a few moments, stop the music and invite the children to shout worship God! Play again as time allows. Say: People should worship God, but God s people worshiped a golden calf! Who talks to God for us? An idol is anything a person puts in the place of God. What things might be idols in your life? FOLD Moses and the Israelites came to Mount Sinai. Moses went up the mountain, and God spoke to him. Moses was up on Mount Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights. Meanwhile, the Israelites camping at the base of the mountain were getting impatient. They went to Moses brother, Aaron. Make us a god to lead us, they said. So Aaron made a gold calf that they could worship. God saw what the people were doing, and He was angry because of their sin. Please forgive them, Moses said. Remember the great promise You made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. So God decided not to destroy them. Moses went down the mountain. He carried two stone tablets on which God had written the laws. Moses got closer to the camp and saw that the people were dancing before the gold calf! He threw down the stone tablets, smashing them at the bottom of the mountain. Then he destroyed the calf they made. The next day, Moses said, I will go up to the Lord. Maybe I can do something to make up for your sin. Moses said to God, Please forgive their sin. God continued to meet with Moses and give him laws and instructions. He made two more stone tablets to replace the ones Moses broke. One morning, Moses went up the mountain to meet with God. The Lord said, Yahweh is a compassionate and gracious God... but He will not leave the guilty unpunished. Moses bowed down and worshiped God. Lord, please go with us, he said. Forgive our sin, and accept us as Your people. Christ Connection: God s people sinned against God, and Moses asked God to forgive them. Moses acted as their mediator, standing for them before God. Moses could not do anything to make up for their sin, but we have a better Mediator Jesus. Jesus paid for our sin on the cross and stands for us before God. After a few days, they ran out of food and water. God was testing them to see if they would trust Him to take care of them or not. How did the Israelites do? Did they pass the test? Not really. They complained against God. Even though they complained, God provided for the physical needs of His people by giving them manna from heaven, quail, and water from a rock! 8 Play the Discussion Starter Video: It seems crazy that the Israelites would so quickly make a golden statue to worship. Remember the Bible is not a story about heroes. The Bible is a story about sinful people and their need for a Savior. The Israelites were real people who made the same sinful choices we make. Remember that an idol is anything we put in front of God. What are some things that can easily become idols for us? [Invite kids to respond.] Unit Memory Verse: God wanted his people to only worship him so when the people worshiped a false God the Lord was Angry. 9 Bible Story: Video Exodus 32:1-35; 34:1-9 Moses and the Israelites were in the wilderness. God had delivered them from slavery in Egypt and from Pharaoh and his pursuing army. The Israelites came to Mount Sinai (SIGH nigh), and they camped there in front of the mountain. Moses went up the mountain, and God spoke to him. God had a lot to tell Moses, and Moses was up on Mount Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights. Meanwhile, the Israelites camping at the base of the mountain were getting impatient. They began to wonder, Where is Moses? What is taking him so long? Is he still alive? The Israelites went to Moses brother, Aaron. Make us a god to lead us, they said.
