4 Page Four THE EUCLID AVENUE TEMPLE JEWISH PROVERBS ' He is the right S01"t of peper. When the cat wears gloves she can't catch any mice. The whiskey weeps out of the drunkard. A daughter -in-law is always a bit of a mother-in-law. If grandma had wheels she'd be a wagon. He's got to learn how to shave another's beard. Because he is angry at the cantor he doesn't say "Amen!" If yqu look for chaleh you lose the black bread. He's such a thief, he'll steal the crack of your whip if you don't look out! If you deal in honey you have a chance, for a lick. You must never show half-completed work to a fqol. The worst informer is the face. Charge nothing and you'll get a lot of customers. Jews are very charitable; when you say "good morning," they answer: "good year." A boil is no trouble-under the other fellow's armpit. Weep before God-laugh before people. You can never fill a sack full of holes. Silence is the fence arqund wisdom. Attend no auctions- if you have no money. The sun will set without your assistance. Your friend has a friend, and your friend's friend has a friend; be discreet. A dream which has not been interpreted is like a letter unread. In a field where there are mounds, talk no secrets. You can't chew with somebody else's teeth. One fool makes many fools. The whole world is one tqwn. What is the t:se of good wine in a rotten barrel? If you spit upwards you're bound to get it back in the face. If you can't afford chicken, herring will do. An insincere peace is better than a sincere war. Do not swallow poison because you know an antidote. On someone else's beard it's good to practice barbering. For borscht you don't need any teeth. Better a Jew without a beard, than a beard withoui a Jew. If God wills it, a broom s hoots (you can shoot with a broom). If there's afire at your neighbor's you, too, are in danger. -From a Treasury of Jewish Folklore by Nathan Ausubel. A NUDNIK "Doctor, I need help," complained a patient. "I talk to myself." "Do you suller pain?" asked the doctor. "No, no pain." "Well," said the doctor, "then go horne, don't worry. Millions of people talk to themselves." "But, doctor," cried the patient, "you don't know what a nudnik I am." -From "A Treasury of Jewish Folklore" by Nathan Ausubel. OBJECT LESSON A woodman carne into a forest to ask the trees to give him a hand for his axe. It seemed so modest a request that the principal trees at once agreed to it, and it was settled among them that the plain, homely ash should furnish what was wanted. No sooner had the woodman fitted the stall to his purpose, than he began laying about him on all sides, felling the noblest trees in the forest. The oak, now seeing the whole matter too late, whispered to the cedar, "The first concession has lost all. If we had not sacrificed our humblest neighbor, we might have yet stood for ages ourselves'." - Aesop's Fables. GHT-BRING YOUR OLDER CHI]~DREN

5 THE EUCLID AVENUE TEMPLE Page Five HASIDIC TALES: SECOND PERIOD A Selection Martin Buber One midnight when Rabbi Moshe Leib was absorbed in the mystic teachings, he heard a knock at his window. A drunken peasant stood outside and asked to be let in and given a bed for the night. For a moment the zaddik's heart was full of anger and he said to himself: "How can a drunk have the insolence to ask to be let in, and what business has he in this house!" But then he said silently in his heart: "And what business has he in God's world? But if God gets along with him, can I reject him?" He opened the door at once and prepared a bed. A respected woman once came to ask the advice of the rabbi of Apt. The instant he set eyes on her he shouted: "Adulteress! You sinned only a short while ago, and yet you have the insolence to step into this p1ure house!" Then from the depths of her heart the woman replied: "The Lord of the world has patience with the wicked. He is in no hurry to make them pay their debts and he does not disclose their secret to any creature, lest they be ashamed to turn to him. N or does he hide his face fr'om them. But the rabbi of Apt si.ts there in his own chair and cannot risk revealing at once what the Creator ha~ covered." From that time on the rabbi of Apt used to say: "No one ever got the better of me except once-and then it was a woman." Once on the Great Sabbath the rabbi of Roptchitz came home from the House of Prayer with weary steps. "What made you so tired?" asked his wife. "It was the sermon," he replied. "I had to speak of the poor and their many needs for the coming Passover, for unleavened bread and wine and everything else is terribly high this year." "And what did you accomplish with your sermon?" his wife went On to ask. "Half of wh3it is neceessary," he answered. "You see, the poor are now ready to take. As for the othe,r half, whether the rich are ready to give--i don't know about that yet." The Rabbi of Zans used to tell this story about himself: "In my youth when I was fired with the love of God, I thought I would convert the whole world to God. But soon I discovered that it would be quite enough (Continued on Page 6) REMEMBER THE TEMPLE IN YOUR WILL The recent announcement of a bequest of $50,000 to the First Unitarian Church brought many comments from people to the effect that rarely do people remember their synagogue or church in their wills. Those who seek to perpetuate the glorious ideals of our faith would do well to make their religious home a beneficiary of their last testaments. The temple is the agency which represents the Jewish cause most enduringly. 6 Paq. Six THE EUCLID AVENUE TEMPLE (Continued from Page 5) to convert the people who lived in my t.own, and I tried for a long time, but,i did not succeed. Then I realized that my program was still much too ambitions, and I concentrated on the persons in my own household. But I co~ld not convert them either. Finally it dawned on me: I must work upon myself, so that Lmay give the true service to God. But I did not accomplish even this." Rabbi Bunam was once walking outside the city with some of his disciples. He bent, picked up a speck of sand, looked at it, and put it back exactly where he fou~d it. "He who does not believe," he said "that God wants this bit of sand to lie in this particular place, does not believe at all." A man who pursued honors came to Rabbi Bunam and told him his father had appeared to him in a dream and said: "I herewith announce to you that you are -destined to be a leader." The zaddik accepted the story in silence. Soon afterward, the man returned and said that he had the same dream over again. "I see," said Rabbi Bunam, "that you are prepared to become a leader of men. If your father comes to you once more, answer him that you are ready to lead, but that he should also appear to the people whom you are supposed to lead." ORDER CANCELLED A merchant ordered a consignment of goods. A week later he received the following letter : "We regret we cannot fill this order until full payment has been made on the last one." The merchant sent his reply: "Please cancel the new order. I cannot wait that long." PRAYER God grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change; The courage to change the things I can; And the wisdom to know the difference. -Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr FROM OUR PRAYER BOOK My God, Keep my tongue from evil, And my lips from speaking guile. To those who curse me, let my soul be silent, My soul shall be to all as dust. Open my heart to Thy Torah, Let my soul hasten to do Thy commandment. Be the words of my mouth and my heart's meditation Acceptable in Thy presence, My Rock and my Redeemer. -From the translation in "Language of Faith," by Nahum N. Glatzer. THEN I AWOKE (Paul Speicher) And in my dream I came to a beautiful building, somehow lil{e a bank, and yet not a bank because the brass marker said: "Time For Sale." I saw a man breathless and pale, painfully pull himself up t:te sairs like a sick man. I heard him say: "The doctor told me I was five years too late in going to see him. I'll buy those five years howand then he can save my life." Then came another man, also older, to say to the clerk: "When it was too late, I discovered that God had given me great capacities and endowments, and I failed to develop them. Sell me 10 years so that I can be the man J could have been." Then came a younger man to say: "The company has told me that starting next month I can have a big job, if I am prepared to take it. But I am not prepared. Give me two years of time so that I will be ready to take the job next month." So they came, ill, hopeless, despondent, worried, unhappy-and they left smiling, each man with a look of unutterable pleasure on his face for he had what he so desperately needed and wanted-time. Then I awoke, glad that I had what these men had not and what they could never buy-time, time to do so many things I wanted to do, that I must do. If that morning I whistled at my work, it was because a great happiness filled my heart. For I still have time. And so do you. - R & R Magazine.
