The four weeks before Christmas are called Advent. The word advent means coming. Thus, Advent is a celebration of the coming of Jesus. As Christians, we celebrate the coming of Jesus over 2000 years ago. We also hope for another coming of Jesus that will bring the final conclusion to God s grand story of redemption told in the Bible. This Advent Season, we hope that you use the Jesse Tree to help you celebrate the coming of Jesus. The Jesse Tree is like a traditional Christmas tree in many ways. It is displayed in the home and is decorated with a variety of ornaments. What makes the Jesse Tree unique is that each of the ornaments tells a story. Specifically, each ornament corresponds to a Bible reading and tells one part of the story of the coming of Jesus. Even though Jesus was born 2000 years ago, the beginning of that story goes back to the beginning in Genesis. That is where the ornaments will begin. What is especially enjoyable about the Jesse Tree is that it is meaningful to people of all ages. Young children and adults can follow and appreciate the retelling of the Biblical story that culminates in the birth of Jesus. Some of you will have time every day to hang an ornament and share the story pictured in that ornament. Others will choose to gather as a family on a weekly basis and hang a few of the ornaments each time you meet. The schedule is very flexible in that you can choose to do one or more ornaments at any given time. Whatever schedule you choose, we hope this guide helps you to gather as a family and truly experience the story of Jesus during this Christmas Season.

2 Table of Contents Introduction... 1 Week One Ornaments... 3 Week Two Ornaments... 5 Week Three Ornaments. 7 Week Four Ornaments. 9 Week One Scriptures 11 Week Two Scriptures 16 Week Three Scriptures. 23 Week Four Scriptures... 28

3 Week One Ornament 1: Creation Scripture: Genesis 1:26-31 Theme: The story of Jesus literally begins at the beginning. In Genesis 1, God creates human beings to have relationship and fellowship with each other and with God. God creates a beautiful world that is truly good. Ornament 2: Adam and Eve Scripture: Genesis 3:1-19 Theme: Unfortunately, the tone of the story changes very quickly. Although God created an amazing world, Adam and Eve disobeyed God and introduced sin into the world. Sin destroys beautiful relationships. Notice how Adam and Eve hide from the very God that made them and loves them. Thus, the need for Jesus is evident from the beginning. Ornament 3: Noah Scripture: Genesis 6:5-8 Theme: The theme of sin introduced by Adam and Eve becomes a dominant part of the story. Humans continue to sin and turn away from the God who made and loves them. In this story, God destroys the sinful world with a flood. However, he shows his grace and mercy to Noah and his family. Ornament 4: Abraham Scripture: Genesis 12:1-17 Theme: Although humans continue to sin, God desires to restore the relationship with us. In this Biblical story, God focuses his attention upon a couple, Abraham and Sarah. God makes a covenant with Abraham. A covenant is a guaranteed promise. God promises Abraham that He will bless Abraham and his family. Perhaps most significant for us is the fact that God promises to bless all of the families of the world through Abraham and his descendants. Ornament 5: Sarah Scripture: Genesis 21:1-7 Theme: God had made a covenant with Abraham and Sarah. Part of that covenant promise was that they would have a child of their own. They had waited and waited. Now old, Abraham and Sarah enjoy the birth of their first child, named Isaac. God was faithful to his promise to Abraham and Sarah, even though they were quite old.

4 Ornament 6: Isaac Scripture: Genesis 22:1-14 Theme: Now that Abraham and Sarah had their first child, everything seemed better. However, in this story, God asks Abraham to take his only son Isaac and sacrifice him on an altar. How could God ask for this? Abraham obediently responds to God. Right before he sacrifices Isaac, God stops him and provides a ram to sacrifice instead of Isaac. Thus, the story ends by highlighting Abraham s obedience and God s graciousness. This graciousness would again be displayed many years later in the life and death of His only Son, Jesus. Ornament 7: Jacob Scripture: Genesis 28:10-22 Theme: Great characters make great stories. Jacob is certainly a great character. He is a man who takes advantage of his brother and his friends. However, God changes Jacob by engaging him in a very personal way. In this particular story, God makes a promise to Jacob that He would be present with Jacob in every circumstance. Although Jacob had been unfaithful to God, God would be faithful to Jacob.

5 Week Two Ornament 8: Light Scripture: Isaiah 9:1-3 and John 8:12-18 Theme: Today, we take a break from the Genesis story to talk about Isaiah. Isaiah was a prophet who lived 700 years before Jesus. In the midst of dark and difficult times, Isaiah glimpsed a future day that would be much brighter. Although his current circumstances were bleak, he believed that God would eventually bring light to the world that would drive out the darkness. In John 8, Jesus identifies himself as that great light. Ornament 9: Joseph Scripture: Genesis 37: 1-36 and 45:4-15 Theme: Back to the unfolding story of Genesis. At the end of Genesis, we are introduced to Jacob s sons. One of the sons, Joseph, is sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers because they were jealous of him. Even so, God uses this horrible act by the brothers to bring about something good. While in Egypt, Joseph gains an important position and is able to help prepare for a famine that devastates the land. Because of Joseph s actions, many people are saved. Read Genesis 50:20 to see how God uses something bad to save many people. Ornament 10: Moses Scripture: Deuteronomy 5:1-22 Theme: Because of the events of the Joseph story, the Israelites move to Egypt. While there, the Israelites become enslaved to the king of Egypt, called Pharaoh. The people of God call for help and God raises up a man named Moses to lead them out of slavery. God saves them from the Egyptians. After leaving Egypt, the Israelites journey through the wilderness to return to the land of Israel. On the way, God gives the Israelites a guide to living. This guide is called the Ten Commandments. It gives instructions on how to live life in a way that loves God and loves neighbor. Ornament 11: Rahab Scripture: Joshua 2:1-21 Theme: When the Israelites return to their homeland, there are other people who are now living there. The Israelites enter the land and fight battles against those other nations. One of the most famous battles they fight is at a place called Jericho. A local woman in Jericho named Rahab helps the people of God. She shows great courage in helping God s people win the battle. Today s ornament commemorates her courage and helpfulness to the Israelites.

6 Ornament 12: Ruth Scripture: Ruth 1:15 2:13 Theme: After the Israelites return to their homeland, they struggle for many years. They continue to fight other nations around them, and they often disobey God by worshipping other gods. In the midst of these difficult times, a woman named Ruth exhibits great strength and faithfulness. Although faced with losing everything, she remains true to God and her family. Today s ornament of wheat commemorates her faithfulness. Ornament 13: Jesse Scripture: Isaiah 11:1-5 Theme: As we have seen so far, the people of Israel experienced many difficulties. They faced famine, war, slavery, and wanderings through the desert. We can only imagine how they longed for something better. Although it was still far off, they hoped for a day that would bring a new beginning. Today s ornament highlights the patience that is often required as we wait for God s plan to unfold. Ornament 14: Samuel Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:1-13 Theme: After many years of war and disobedience, the people of Israel ask God for a king to lead them. They hoped that by having a king, they would serve God more faithfully. Unfortunately, the first king, named Saul, was not a good one. He disobeyed God many times during his rule. In response, God rejected Saul as King. However, God had a plan for a new king who would be very different than Saul. He even looked different. Unlike the brawny Saul, the new king was young and inexperienced. Even so, he would prove to be much greater than Saul. His name was David. Today s ornament depicts God s surprising plan in choosing David as the new king. The ornament pictures a horn because the prophet Samuel poured a horn filled with olive oil over David s head to identify him as the new king of Israel. Samuel did this as a ceremony to set David apart for the special role that he would play as king over God s people. The pouring of oil over the head of the future king, or anointing, is the tradition behind the word Messiah. Messiah means anointed one. As they anointed David as king, they looked ahead to a greater king that God would one day send to rule as the great Messiah.

7 Week Three Ornament 15: Joy and Hope Scripture: Habakkuk 2:1-3; Hebrews 11:1; Romans 8:24-25 Theme: The time before Christmas is a time of expectation and waiting. We are waiting for a break from school, a respite from work, a visit with family members, or exciting new gifts. These expectations shape the Christmas season year after year. As we walk through the story of the Bible, may we also feel the expectation building for that climatic moment when God sent the great gift of His Son. Today s ornament of the watchtower symbolizes the time of waiting before the coming of Jesus. Ornament 16: David Scripture: 2 Samuel 5:1-5 Theme: Today, we return to the Old Testament story of King David. The king of Israel was called to serve God by faithfully leading God s people. Thus, the king of Israel was called the Shepherd of the people. Today s ornament of the crown remembers David as a good shepherd to God s people. Ornament 17: Elijah Scripture: 1 Kings 18:19-24, Theme: Although David was an example of a good king, many of the kings of Israel were not good shepherds over the people. In response, God sent prophets to remind the kings of their responsibilities. Most of the kings did not listen to the prophets. In our Scripture reading, we meet Ahab, one of most disobedient kings of Israel. He was disobedient to God by worshipping another god named Baal. Elijah, a prophet of God, challenges Ahab and the followers of Baal to a contest. Today s ornament remembers that contest and God s victory at Mount Carmel. Ornament 18: Daniel Scripture: Daniel 6:2-29 Theme: In the readings for the previous ornament, we noted that the Israelites disobeyed God by worshipping the images of other gods. Eventually, God allowed the Israelites to be overcome by a great enemy. In fact, the Israelites were conquered by the Babylonians and taken to a foreign land to live. This is known as the Babylonian Exile. While in exile, many Israelites remained faithful to God in the midst of difficulty and despair. Today s ornament remembers one of those Israelites who showed great courage and faithfulness during the difficult events of the exile. The story of Daniel and the Lion s Den highlights God s power to intervene on behalf of His people.

8 Ornament 19: Ezekiel Scripture: Ezekiel 2:9 3:1 Theme: Throughout the Old Testament, God called prophets to announce messages to His people. Sometimes those messages were difficult messages of warning. Other times, the messages focused on God s mercy and hopes for the future. In today s ornament, we celebrate the importance of all of the Old Testament prophets by commemorating the words of Ezekiel. Ezekiel was a prophet during the Babylonian Exile and his words were God s words of encouragement. The picture of the scroll emphasizes that the prophets spoke the words of God. Ornament 20: Isaiah Scripture: Isaiah 35:1-7 Theme: In today s ornament, we remember the prophet Isaiah. The prophet Isaiah pronounced many great messages about the coming Messiah. Today s ornament of the rose comes from Isaiah s promise of a new beginning. As Isaiah glimpsed the reality of the coming Messiah, he used the image of a beautiful flower blooming in the desert. Isaiah concludes that this glorious flower will reveal the splendor of our God. Ornament 21: Zechariah and Elizabeth Scripture: Luke 1:5-25 Theme: Over the past few weeks, we have walked through the Old Testament and seen how God was preparing the world for the coming of His Son, the great Messiah. On today s ornament, we finally have a picture from a story in the New Testament. The ornament depicts Zechariah and Elizabeth, the father and mother of John the Baptist. As a priest, Zechariah regularly encountered God s presence in the temple. Little did he know that he would soon encounter God s miraculous presence in a child named Jesus.

9 Week Four Ornament 22: Peace Scripture: Isaiah 11:1-9 Theme: On today s ornament, we have an odd image of a wolf and a lamb lying down together. This picture is supposed to be unusual to us. It comes from the prophet Isaiah, who uses the image to talk about a radically different world defined by peace and hope and love. This world is only possible under the rule of a great and wonderful king. As we have seen in our readings in the Old Testament, no king came close to this ideal. It is only in Jesus that we see the beginnings of the Kingdom of God that brings peace to the world. Ornament 23: John the Baptist Scripture: Matthew 3:1-6 Theme: The prophets of the Old Testament had long ago talked of a coming king, a Messiah, who would make things right in the world. As with any great king, someone must come before the king to announce his arrival. In today s ornament, we highlight that messenger named John the Baptist. The picture of the seashell is a traditional image for John the Baptist, who pronounced that the time was near for the coming of the Messiah, and called for all to repent and believe in the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Ornament 24: Annunciation Scripture: Luke 1:26-33 Theme: Today s reading is about the Annunciation. The Annunciation is the foretelling of the birth of Jesus to Mary, the mother of Jesus. It is an overwhelming message to this young woman. Yet, she humbly accepts her important role in the life of Jesus. The picture of the angel on today s ornament highlights this overwhelming message and Mary s courageous response. Ornament 25: Joseph Scripture: Matthew 1:18-24 Theme: As we learned in our discussion of the previous ornament, Mary was overwhelmed by the message given to her by the angel. Mary s future husband was also stunned by the news of Mary s pregnancy. While sleeping, God told Joseph about the special circumstances of Jesus birth. When he awoke, he took Mary as his wife and accepted the important role that he would play in the life of Jesus. The picture of the carpentry tools on this ornament celebrates Joseph and his humble obedience.

10 Ornament 26: Mary Scripture: Luke 1: Theme: Today s ornament is a picture of lilies inside of a heart. The lilies and the heart represent the character of Mary in the story. She faces extraordinary events as a young woman. Yet, as today s reading attests, she is fixed upon God s grace as she births and mothers Jesus, the Son of God. Ornament 27: Bethlehem Scripture: Luke 2:1-5 Theme: The Old Testament prophet Micah (Micah 5:2) prophesied that a great ruler would emerge from the town of Bethlehem. It is called the town of David because it was the hometown of the great King David. Now, an even greater king is born in this small town. This ornament commemorates the town of Bethlehem. Ornament 28: Birth of Jesus Scripture: Luke 2:6-21 Theme: Before you place the final ornament upon the Jesse Tree, look around at all the other ornaments on the tree. Each of the stories that we have read over the past few weeks prepare us for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. In the birth of Jesus, God brings the Bible and all of human history to a climactic crescendo. All the events from the beginning of Genesis converge on the coming of God into human flesh. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, may remember that God indeed is with us and that Jesus is the Great King. May we also remember to look ahead to another coming of Jesus that will consummate His glorious Kingdom.

11 Week One Ornament 1: Creation Scripture: Genesis 1:26-31 [26] Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. [27] So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. [28] And God blessed them. And God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. [29] And God said, Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. [30] And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food. And it was so. [31] And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Ornament 2: Adam and Eve Scripture: Genesis 3:1-19 (Genesis 1:26-31 ESV) [3:1] Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, Did God actually say, You shall not eat of any tree in the garden? [2] And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, [3] but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. [4] But the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die. [5] For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. [6] So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. [7] Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. [8] And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. [9] But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, Where are you? [10] And he said, I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself. [11] He said, Who told you that you

were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat? [12] The man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate. [13] Then the LORD God said to the woman, What is this that you have done? The woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate. [14] The LORD God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. [15] I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel. [16] To the woman he said, I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you. [17] And to Adam he said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, You shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; [18] thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. [19] By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return. (Genesis 3:1-19 ESV) Ornament 3: Noah Scripture: Genesis 6:5-8 [5] The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. [6] And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. [7] So the LORD said, I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them. [8] But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. (Genesis 6:5-8 ESV) 12

13 Ornament 4: Abraham Scripture: Genesis 12:1-17 [12:1] Now the LORD said to Abram, Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. [2] And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. [3] I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. [4] So Abram went, as the LORD had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. [5] And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan, [6] Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. [7] Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, To your offspring I will give this land. So he built there an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him. [8] From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the LORD and called upon the name of the LORD. [9] And Abram journeyed on, still going toward the Negeb. [10] Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land. [11] When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance, [12] and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, This is his wife. Then they will kill me, but they will let you live. [13] Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake. [14] When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. [15] And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house. [16] And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels. [17] But the LORD afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. Ornament 5: Sarah Scripture: Genesis 21:1-7 (Genesis 12:1-17 ESV) [21:1] The LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as he had promised. [2] And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him. [3] Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac. [4] And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. [5] Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. [6] And Sarah said, God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me. [7] And she said, Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age. (Genesis 21:1-7 ESV)

14 Ornament 6: Isaac Scripture: Genesis 22:1-14 [22:1] After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham! And he said, Here I am. [2] He said, Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you. [3] So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. [4] On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. [5] Then Abraham said to his young men, Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you. [6] And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. [7] And Isaac said to his father Abraham, My father! And he said, Here I am, my son. He said, Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? [8] Abraham said, God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son. So they went both of them together. [9] When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. [10] Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. [11] But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham! And he said, Here I am. [12] He said, Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me. [13] And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. [14] So Abraham called the name of that place, The LORD will provide ; as it is said to this day, On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided. (Genesis 22:1-14 ESV)

15 Ornament 7: Jacob Scripture: Genesis 28:10-22 [10] Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. [11] And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. [12] And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! [13] And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. [14] Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. [15] Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you. [16] Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it. [17] And he was afraid and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. [18] So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. [19] He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first. [20] Then Jacob made a vow, saying, If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, [21] so that I come again to my father's house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God, [22] and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you. (Genesis 28:10-22 ESV)

16 Week Two Ornament 8: Light Scripture: Isaiah 9:1-3 and John 8:12-18 [9:1] But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. [2] The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. [3] You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. (Isaiah 9:1-3 ESV) [12] Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. [13] So the Pharisees said to him, You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true. [14] Jesus answered, Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. [15] You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. [16] Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. [17] In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. [18] I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me. (John 8:12-18 ESV)

17 Ornament 9: Joseph Scripture: Genesis 37: 1-36 and 45:4-15 [37:1] Jacob lived in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan. [2] These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father. [3] Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors. [4] But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him. [5] Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they hated him even more. [6] He said to them, Hear this dream that I have dreamed: [7] Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf. [8] His brothers said to him, Are you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us? So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. [9] Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me. [10] But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you? [11] And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind. [12] Now his brothers went to pasture their father's flock near Shechem. [13] And Israel said to Joseph, Are not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them. And he said to him, Here I am. [14] So he said to him, Go now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the flock, and bring me word. So he sent him from the Valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. [15] And a man found him wandering in the fields. And the man asked him, What are you seeking? [16] I am seeking my brothers, he said. Tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock. [17] And the man said, They have gone away, for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan. [18] They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him. [19] They said to one another, Here comes this dreamer. [20] Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams. [21] But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, Let us not take his life. [22] And Reuben said to them, Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father. [23] So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. [24] And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it. [25] Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. [26] Then Judah said to his brothers, What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? [27] Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let

not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh. And his brothers listened to him. [28] Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt. [29] When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he tore his clothes [30] and returned to his brothers and said, The boy is gone, and I, where shall I go? [31] Then they took Joseph's robe and slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. [32] And they sent the robe of many colors and brought it to their father and said, This we have found; please identify whether it is your son's robe or not. [33] And he identified it and said, It is my son's robe. A fierce animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn to pieces. [34] Then Jacob tore his garments and put sackcloth on his loins and mourned for his son many days. [35] All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted and said, No, I shall go down to Sheol to my son, mourning. Thus his father wept for him. [36] Meanwhile the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard. 18 (Genesis 37 ESV) [4] So Joseph said to his brothers, Come near to me, please. And they came near. And he said, I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. [5] And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. [6] For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are yet five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. [7] And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. [8] So it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. [9] Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; do not tarry. [10] You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children's children, and your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. [11] There I will provide for you, for there are yet five years of famine to come, so that you and your household, and all that you have, do not come to poverty. [12] And now your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see, that it is my mouth that speaks to you. [13] You must tell my father of all my honor in Egypt, and of all that you have seen. Hurry and bring my father down here. [14] Then he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck and wept, and Benjamin wept upon his neck. [15] And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon them. After that his brothers talked with him. (Genesis 45:4-15 ESV)

19 Ornament 10: Moses Scripture: Deuteronomy 5:1-22 [5:1] And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them. [2] The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. [3] Not with our fathers did the LORD make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today. [4] The LORD spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, [5] while I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD. For you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. He said: [6] I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. [7] You shall have no other gods before me. [8] You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. [9] You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, [10] but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. [11] You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. [12] Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. [13] Six days you shall labor and do all your work, [14] but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. [15] You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. [16] Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. [17] You shall not murder. [18] And you shall not commit adultery. [19] And you shall not steal. [20] And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. [21] And you shall not covet your neighbor's wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's. [22] These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. (Deuteronomy 5:1-22 ESV)

20 Ornament 11: Rahab Scripture: Joshua 2:1-21 [2:1] And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, Go, view the land, especially Jericho. And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. [2] And it was told to the king of Jericho, Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land. [3] Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land. [4] But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. [5] And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them. [6] But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof. [7] So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out. [8] Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof [9] and said to the men, I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. [10] For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction. [11] And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. [12] Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a sure sign [13] that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death. [14] And the men said to her, Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the LORD gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you. [15] Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall. [16] And she said to them, Go into the hills, or the pursuers will encounter you, and hide there three days until the pursuers have returned. Then afterward you may go your way. [17] The men said to her, We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear. [18] Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father's household. [19] Then if anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be guiltless. But if a hand is laid on anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head. [20] But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless with respect to your oath that you have made us swear. [21] And she said, According to your words, so be it. Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. (Joshua 2:1-21 ESV)

21 Ornament 12: Ruth Scripture: Ruth 1:15 2:13 [15] And she said, See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law. [16] But Ruth said, Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. [17] Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the LORD do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you. [18] And when Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more. [19] So the two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem. And when they came to Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them. And the women said, Is this Naomi? [20] She said to them, Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. [21] I went away full, and the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi, when the LORD has testified against me and the Almighty has brought calamity upon me? [22] So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabite her daughter-in-law with her, who returned from the country of Moab. And they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest. [2:1] Now Naomi had a relative of her husband's, a worthy man of the clan of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz. [2] And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, Let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find favor. And she said to her, Go, my daughter. [3] So she set out and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers, and she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the clan of Elimelech. [4] And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem. And he said to the reapers, The LORD be with you! And they answered, The LORD bless you. [5] Then Boaz said to his young man who was in charge of the reapers, Whose young woman is this? [6] And the servant who was in charge of the reapers answered, She is the young Moabite woman, who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab. [7] She said, Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves after the reapers. So she came, and she has continued from early morning until now, except for a short rest. [8] Then Boaz said to Ruth, Now, listen, my daughter, do not go to glean in another field or leave this one, but keep close to my young women. [9] Let your eyes be on the field that they are reaping, and go after them. Have I not charged the young men not to touch you? And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink what the young men have drawn. [10] Then she fell on her face, bowing to the ground, and said to him, Why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner? [11] But Boaz answered her, All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband has been fully told to me, and how you left your father and mother and your native land and came to a people that you did not know before. [12] The LORD repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge! [13] Then she said, I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, for you have comforted me and spoken kindly to your servant, though I am not one of your servants. (Ruth 1:15-2:13 ESV)

22 Ornament 13: Jesse Scripture: Isaiah 11:1-5 [11:1] There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. [2] And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. [3] And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, [4] but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. [5] Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins. (Isaiah 11:1-5 ESV) Ornament 14: Samuel Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:1-13 [16:1] The LORD said to Samuel, How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons. [2] And Samuel said, How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take a heifer with you and say, I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. [3] And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you. [4] Samuel did what the LORD commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, Do you come peaceably? [5] And he said, Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. [6] When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, Surely the LORD's anointed is before him. [7] But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart. [8] Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither has the LORD chosen this one. [9] Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, Neither has the LORD chosen this one. [10] And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, The LORD has not chosen these. [11] Then Samuel said to Jesse, Are all your sons here? And he said, There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here. [12] And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he. [13] Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah. (1 Samuel 16:1-13 ESV)

23 Week Three Ornament 15: Joy and Hope Scripture: Habakkuk 2:1-3; Hebrews 11:1; Romans 8:24-25 [2:1] I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and look out to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint. [2] And the LORD answered me: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. [3] For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay. (Habakkuk 2:1-3 ESV) [11:1] Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1 ESV) [24] For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? [25] But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Ornament 16: David Scripture: 2 Samuel 5:1-5 (Romans 8:24-25 ESV) [5:1] Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, Behold, we are your bone and flesh. [2] In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the LORD said to you, You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over Israel. [3] So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel. [4] David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. [5] At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years. (2 Samuel 5:1-5 ESV)
