TEACHER BIBLE STUDY 4 th -6 th Grade Kids Bible Study Guide Moses was born into a rough world. The Israelites were so great in number that the king of Egypt forced them into hard labor. The Israelites were ordered to make bricks to build houses and cities. When that didn t work, Pharaoh instituted an unimaginable method of population control: kill all of the baby boys. Pharaoh was afraid the boys would become men who would rise up against him. Moses story is a clear picture of God s sovereignty. Not only was Moses life spared by the Egyptian princess, but also his mother nursed him. He even grew up in the house of Pharaoh. God also planned for Moses to spend years shepherding in Midian before He called him to his task. Imagine the encounter between God and Moses at the burning bush. God drew a curious Moses to Himself, and then He spoke to him: Moses, Moses! God identified Himself as the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob. He testified to His own grace: I have observed the misery of My people and I know about their sufferings. I am sending you so that you may lead My people, the Israelites, out of Egypt (Ex. 3:7-10). Perhaps God s greatest revelation to Moses was His name: I AM WHO I AM. The most basic and important fact about God is that He exists He always has and always will exist. He does not change. God revealed to Moses who He is so that Moses would trust in Him. Help the kids you teach understand that God saved Moses for a special purpose: to rescue His people. Emphasize that the calling of Moses points to a greater calling and rescue the call of Jesus to come to earth to save God s people from their sin. When kids better understand who God is, they can trust in Him. His family stayed in Egypt, and the family grew. The family was known as Israelites because they came from the family of Israel (Jacob). A new pharaoh came to power. He did not know about the wonderful things Joseph had done for Egypt. The new king was afraid of the Israelites (also called Hebrews). There were so many of them! They might join their enemies and fight against Egypt! So the king made them slaves with very hard work to do. But the harder they worked, the bigger their families grew. The Egyptian king was desperate. Kill all the baby boys! Pharaoh told the Hebrew midwives, who helped with births. Let the girls live, but kill the boys! But the midwives feared God more than they feared Pharaoh. They let the boys live. Pharaoh became angrier. Throw every Hebrew baby boy into the Nile River! he commanded. Then a special baby was born. His mother hid him until she could no longer hide him. She put her baby boy in a basket and set it along the banks of the Nile. His older sister, Miriam, stayed nearby and watched the basket. Soon Pharaoh s daughter, the princess, went to the river to bathe. She found the baby in the basket and felt sorry for him. Miriam offered to find a woman to nurse the baby until he was older. Go! said Pharaoh s daughter. Miriam brought her mother. The princess paid Moses mother to care for him. The princess named the baby Moses because she drew him out of the water. Moses never forgot that he was born a Hebrew. He saw how his people were poor and were forced to work very hard. One day Moses saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew. Moses killed the Egyptian. Pharaoh found out and was angry. 2

Moses ran away to a place called Midian (MID ih uhn), where he worked as a shepherd for many years. The Israelite people in Egypt were still miserable, and they cried out to God. God heard their groaning. He planned to use Moses to answer their prayers. One day after the pharaoh had died, while Moses was with the flock in the wilderness, he saw a burning bush. The Angel of the Lord was in the fire, and the bush was not burning up. How strange! Moses was curious and he went to look. Suddenly, God called from the bush, Moses, Moses! Moses replied, Here I am. God said, Take off your sandals. This is holy ground. I have seen how My people are suffering. I want you to lead them out of Egypt to a good land I have for them. First, lead them into the wilderness so they can worship Me. Moses doubted. He wondered if the Israelites even remembered God. What if they ask for Your name? Moses asked. What should I tell them? I AM WHO I AM, God said. Tell them: I AM has sent me to you. God was saying that He exists, that He never changes, and that He lives forever. God warned that leading the people out of Egypt would not be easy. Pharaoh would not let them go. But after miracles that God would perform, Pharaoh would let them go. Moses was still stubborn. What if they don t believe me and will not leave with me? he asked. God gave Moses three miracles to perform to prove that God was with him. First, God turned Moses staff into a snake. Then He made Moses hand turn white with leprosy. Finally, God told Moses that if he poured water from the Nile onto the ground, it would turn into blood. Lord, Moses said, I am not good at speaking. Please, send someone else. God was angry with Moses for asking God to send someone else, but He agreed to send Moses brother, Aaron, with him. The Israelites were suffering. They cried out to God and He heard their prayers. God was sending Moses to save them. Christ Connection: God saved Moses for a special purpose: to rescue His people. The calling of Moses points to a greater calling and rescue the call of Jesus to come to earth to save God s people from their sin. Moses and Jesus both obeyed God s commands in order to carry out His plan of salvation. Moses delivered God s people from physical captivity; Jesus delivered God s people from captivity to sin. TRANSITION TIME Session Title: Moses Was Born and Called Bible Passage: Exodus 1:8 2:10,23-25; 3:1 4:20 Big Picture Question: Why did God save Moses? 4 Welcome time Use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group. Ask boys and girls to share their favorite moment from the last week. What happened? What made it so great? Activities/Table Centers Table Centers (Miscellaneous Activites) Moses and the Burning Bush / Review Crossword activity sheets, 1 per kid (Lesson Specific) pencils, colored Help kids complete the activity page Moses and the Burning Bush. Ask kids to share some of the plans they have for their lives. Say Today we are going to continue on our journey through the big picture of God s story. Moses had a big role in God s story. God s plan for Moses was not what Moses expected. God s plan is always perfect. Our plans may change as God tells us more about His plan for our life. If time allows, encourage boys and girls to solve the Review Crossword on the activity page to review previous Bible people. Challenge kids to tell you the chronological order of the Bible people. Session starter (10 minutes) Option 1: Wherever I am map construction paper markers Option: Provide a map of your local community with key locations highlighted to spark ideas or help detail-oriented kids identify street names. Lead boys and girls to write the phrase God is in control wherever I am along the bottom or top of their paper. Encourage each kid to draw a map. The map may show how to travel from her house to school or from church to the city park. Say Today s story is about someone whom God was with and protected because God had a plan for him. God promised him that He would be with him. God is always with us. He knows exactly where you are all day, every day. Option 2: No-name name tag blank name tags markers Options: Allow kids to select a partner and create no-name name tags for each other. Again, emphasize positive descriptions. If you have a new kid in the group, alter the activity to include time for kids to share about themselves before a name tag is made. Give each boy and girl three blank name tags. Lead boys and girls to write a description for themselves on a name tag. Guide them to use affirming words, not negative words, in the descriptions. Challenge kids to find two friends and create a no-name name tag for each friend by using words that describe each of them. Give kids two minutes to complete the task. Again, emphasize using affirming words, not negative words, in the descriptions. 4

Say Is anyone s no-name name tag description different from what your family would say about you? Sometimes we describe ourselves differently from how others (including God) see and describe us. In today s Bible story, God called Moses to serve Him by leading a group of people. Moses didn t think he was capable of leading the people. It didn t matter how Moses described himself; God s plan was for him to lead God s people. When God wants us to do something, He will help us. In our story, God also told Moses who He is. The response was not what we might expect. Listen to God s response when Moses asked for God s name. Transition to large group LESSON Session Title: Moses Was Born and Called Bible Passage: Exodus 1:8 2:10,23-25; 3:1 4:20 Big Picture Question: Why did God save Moses? God saved Moses to rescue His people from captivity. Key Passage: Exodus 6:7 Unit Christ Connection: God saved His people from physical captivity in Egypt as He would one day send Jesus to save His people from spiritual captivity. room decorations Tip: Save the desert backdrop for the next unit s theme. Tip: Times are suggestions. You may choose to alter the suggested times to fit your class. Suggested Theme Decorating Ideas: You may wish to hang tan cloth along the wall behind your stage to establish a desert backdrop. Create a lush river area by draping blue cloth across the front or side of the stage to form a river and green cloth or grass carpet everywhere else. Place tropical greenery between the river and the desert backdrop. Scatter shovels, flat mason trowels, brooms, and brushes (various sizes, paintbrushes are great) to represent archaeology tools. Place buckets for dirt next to a sieve. Each week you will need to add a special object near the archaeology tools to be found during the session. You may choose to move the tools and buckets to a new location on stage each week. Keep this in mind as you decorate. Countdown countdown video (Insert provided DVD with lesson videos and worship) Show the countdown video as you clean-up table centers, set up classroom chairs for lesson, and set it to end as large group time begins. 5

Introduce the session (1 minute) archaeologist attire for large group leader [Dress as an archaeologist in white and khaki clothing, work boots, and a wide-brimmed hat. Begin calling for the professor while off stage.] Leader Hey, Professor! Professor! Has anyone seen the professor? No, he hasn t been here today? Hmmm. He s supposed to meet us here and teach us all about archaeology. Do you know what archaeology is? Archaeology is the study of the past based on finding, examining, and explaining items from human life and activity. Biblical archaeology searches for what we can learn about Bible events and people. The goal of biblical archaeology is to help us understand the Bible and God s plan better. The professor is one of the best in the field of biblical archaeology. He is here studying the Egyptians and what it would have been like to live back when Moses lived. Do you know when Moses lived? Wait a minute, did I tell you who Moses was? We should look at our timeline map to find some of these answers. Timeline map (3 minutes) Timeline Map (Posted on wall in classroom. Additional copies provided for Table Time Review) Leader Using the 8 ½ x 11 Timeline provided in the curriculum bucket under Table Time Review, point to a picture, and have the children remind you what Bible story it is. Take a few minutes to review the timeline Bible stories. Leader Great job, everyone! According to our map, we are at our archaeology site to learn about how God Formed His Nation. I see Moses name down here on our timeline. Moses lived several hundred years after Abraham. Big picture question (2 minutes) 11x17 poster provided basket piece of paper Create a spot where an archaeological discovery is in progress. Partially hide a basket in this spot, surrounded by tools. Basket can be any size. [Walk over to the spot with the archaeology tools and the basket. Act as if you are seeing it for the first time. Depending on how you arrange the basket, you can finish unburying it or just find it already unburied.] Leader Wait a minute. Did you see this stuff? The professor must be working here. It looks like he is in the middle of a discovery. I see a note here. It says, Today s big picture question is, Why did God save Moses? Do you think what the professor is uncovering here will help us find our answer? Should we finish uncovering the find? OK, let me carefully dust off the dirt with my brush and dig with this trowel. And here it is. It s a basket? A basket? A basket is our clue to solving our big picture question? Let s review what we know so far. Our big picture question is, Why did God save Moses? And our archaeological discovery is a basket. Now I remember! I remember a story in the Bible about Moses and a basket. Everyone find Exodus 1 in your Bibles. 6

Tell the Bible story (8 minutes) Moses was Born and Called video Bibles Big Picture Question: Why did God save Moses? 11x17 poster provided Bible Story Picture - 11x17 poster provided Open your Bible to Exodus 1 and tell the Bible story in your own words, or show the Bible story video Moses Was Born and Called. Leader God saw everything the Israelites were experiencing. He protected Moses and saved him. Our big picture question is, Why did God save Moses? The answer is God saved Moses to rescue His people from captivity. Long before Moses was born, God made His covenant with Abraham. God told Abraham that his descendants would live in a foreign land and become enslaved. The people would be oppressed for 400 years, but God would free them. (Genesis 15:13-21) Like He promised Abraham, God heard the cries of the Israelites. God would free the Israelites from the Egyptians, and He would use Moses in His plan. In the next few weeks, we will hear exactly how God used Moses to rescue the Israelites. What was the first thing Moses had to do when God spoke to him at the burning bush? Good listening! God told Moses to take off his shoes because he was on holy ground. The ground itself was not special, what was special was that God was there. God is holy and that made this place special and holy while He was there to speak with Moses. God told Moses to speak to Pharaoh, but Moses was worried. Moses asked God an interesting question. Moses asked God what His name was. Does anyone remember God s answer? Yes! God said His name was I AM WHO I AM. Sometimes it is translated or written as I AM BECAUSE I AM or I WILL BE WHO I WILL BE. All three answers describe that God is sovereign and He never changes. Remember, sovereign means that God is in control and will accomplish or do whatever is pleasing to Him. By telling Moses His name, God reminded Moses of how great He is and that He is in control. Despite trying to give excuses and asking God to send someone else, Moses could not stop God s plan to use him to lead God s people to freedom. Although God was angry with Moses for asking Him to have someone else lead the Israelites, God did agree to help Moses by allowing his brother, Aaron, to help. God had rescued Moses to lead the Israelites from captivity and God would be with him the entire way. Why did God save Moses? God saved Moses to rescue His people from captivity. Moses provides us with a picture of Jesus. Moses rescue of the people by leading them from physical captivity was a picture for God s people of the rescue that was coming one day. God would send Jesus to rescue His people from spiritual captivity. God s people were in slavery to sin, but God would provide them a rescue through His Son, Jesus, dying on the cross for the sin of His people. All people are held captive by sin, and we need Jesus to be our Savior. We can accept the gift of salvation God has provided and be rescued from our sin. You may choose to review how to become a Christian using the guide below. Encourage kids who have questions about becoming a Christian to talk to you, another teacher, their parents, or another Christian. 7

God rules. God created and is in charge of everything. (Gen. 1:1; Rev. 4:11; Col. 1:16-17) We sinned. Since Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Rom. 3:23; 6:23) God provided. God sent His Son Jesus to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. (John 3:16; Eph. 2:8-9) Jesus gives. Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again so we can be welcomed into God s family. (Rom. 5:8; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Pet. 3:18) We respond. Believe that Jesus alone saves you. Repent. Tell God that your faith is in Jesus. (Rom. 10:9-10,13) Key passage (5 minutes) Key Passage Poster: Exodus 6:7 (provided) Worship Song: I Am Yahweh! (on provided DVD) Tip: If the kids in your group have multiple translations, lead them to find the verse in their Bible, but guide the group to read the verse from the key passage poster or slide. Leader Why did God save Moses? God saved Moses to rescue His people from captivity. Our key passage this unit is a reminder that God will always fulfill His covenant promises. Lead kids to locate Exodus 6:7 in their Bibles and read the verse aloud as a group. Sing I Am Yahweh! Discussion starter video (5 minutes) Rope Climb video (on provided DVD) Leader God gave Moses a big job. Did Moses just agree to go lead the Israelites? No. What did he do? He had a lot of questions and reasons he wasn t the right person. Moses even asked God to send someone else. Do we ever think we can t do something? Watch this video and tell me what you think. Show Rope Climb video. Leader Has anyone ever felt like that? Has anyone ever known that God wanted you to do something and all you could think about were reasons why you couldn t do it? What did you do? How can remembering the story of Moses and our big picture question help you? Sing (5 minutes) Worship Song: You Lift Me Up (on provided DVD) Leader The Israelites were in a difficult place. They cried out to God for help. God heard their cry; He noticed their need. He does the same for us. When we are in a sad time or a difficult place, God hears our cries for help and He will lift us up. Join me in singing our new theme song, You Lift Me Up. Lead kids to sing You Lift Me Up. Prayer (1 minute) Leader Just as God promised Moses to always be with him, God is with His people. When you become a Christian, God is always with you; He is always guiding you. Why did God save Moses? God saved Moses to rescue His people from captivity. The next few weeks we are going to hear exactly how God used Moses to rescue the people from captivity, so I hope you will come back to hear the rest of Moses story. 8

I guess it is time I locate the professor and learn more about biblical archaeology. Before I go, I m going to pray. Close in prayer. Dismiss to small groups for Table Time TABLE TIME LEADER Session Title: Moses Was Born and Called Bible Passage: Exodus 1:8 2:10, 23-25; 3:1 4:20 Big Picture Question: Why did God save Moses? God saved Moses to rescue His people from captivity. Key Passage: Exodus 6:7 Unit Christ Connection: God saved His people from physical captivity in Egypt as He would one day send Jesus to save His people from spiritual captivity. Bible story review & Bible skills (10 minutes) Bibles, 1 per kid Timeline - small group visual pack Tip: Although all of these statements are in Scripture, not all are included in the script of the Bible story. You may choose to allow kids to look at Exodus in their Bibles as you read each description. Read each person s description one sentence at a time. If a kid thinks he knows which person you are describing, he should stand up. Our names are Shiphrah and Puah. We are Hebrew women and we feared God. We did not do what Pharaoh ordered us to do. (Hebrew midwives) I have two brothers. I offered to help Pharaoh s daughter. I watched my baby brother from a distance. (Miriam) I am from the Israelite tribe of Levi. My mother thought I was beautiful. My parents did not give me my name. My mother hid me in a basket along the bank of the Nile River. (Moses) I found a little boy crying. I raised the boy as my own son. I named him Moses. (Pharaoh s daughter) My name is Jochebed (Numbers 26:59). I have three children, two boys and a girl. I hid my baby for three months before I placed him in a papyrus basket. (Moses mom) I was a shepherd. The angel of the Lord appeared to me. God told me to take off my sandals. I was chosen to lead my people. (Moses) I saved Baby Moses from Pharaoh. I heard the Israelites groaning. I AM WHO I AM. (God) Guide kids to open their Bibles to Exodus and locate each of the people discussed. Say Why did God save Moses? God saved Moses to rescue His people from captivity. Whose calling does the calling of Moses point us to? (The calling of Moses points to a greater calling and rescue the call of Jesus to come to earth to save God s people from their sin.) 9

Guide kids to review the timeline in the small group visual pack. Help them note the time difference between Joseph s family arriving in Egypt and Moses. Remind kids that you can talk to them about becoming a Christian. Key Passage Activity (5 minutes) Key Passage Poster: Exodus 6:7 (provided on bulletin board) Key Passage Card (laminated square) that can be hidden in classroom Pictures to review key elements of the Bible Story (6 cards): Baby Moses in Basket, Nile River, Miriam watching over baby Moses, Egyptian princess finds baby Moses, Moses and burning bush, I AM WHO I AM card (these pictures can be hidden around the room to review key elements of the Bible Story) Bibles tape Hide the key passage card somewhere in your room (in a Bible, taped to the back of an open door, under a chair). You may also hide the provided pictures to review key elements of the bible story with the kids as they locate them in the room. Inform the kids that you have hidden something very special in the room for them to find. Call hot when the kids are close to the item and cold when they move away from the item. When the kids find the key passage card, introduce them to the key passage. Encourage them to begin to memorize it. Say In today s Bible story, a woman had to hide something very precious to her. God s promise to free the Israelites from slavery was not hidden. God promised Abraham that He would free his descendants from slavery. Our key passage reveals God will fulfill His promise to Abraham. God s plan to send Jesus is not hidden from us. He revealed His plan to us in the Bible. Play the game again, allowing boys and girls to take turns hiding the key passage for their friends to find. Activity choice (10 minutes) Option 1: Create a hero paper crayons long piece of paper Options: Draw the outline of a person on the long piece of paper. Attach it to the wall and allow kids to work as a group to create a hero. To make this activity a game, allow kids to cross the room quickly, draw for 30 seconds, return, and pass the marker to the next kid. Guide kids to draw a picture of a hero. Ask kids to share about their pictures. Ask them to share if their hero is powerful and what makes their hero powerful. Say God uses people in His plan like Moses, people like us. God uses people who aren t powerful because it makes Him look strong. God is the only One who has the power we need in every area of our lives, the power to free us from the captivity of our sin. God rescued Moses from Pharaoh because God had a plan for Moses life. Moses wasn t the biggest hero in this story. The all-powerful God was! We aren t the heroes of our story either, but when we 10

obey God even in our weakness, we show the world that He is strong. Why did God save Moses? God saved Moses to rescue His people from captivity. Ask kids to write over their drawings Only God is all-powerful and has the power to free me from sin. Option 2: Outside the wooden box craft sticks per kid, can be regular or miniature liquid glue small pieces of paper pencils or pens Tip: Some kids may not think they are talented because they do not have musical or athletic talent. Help each kid understand that we all are good at something. Their abilities may involve school, leadership, service, writing, and so forth. Allow kids to use craft sticks to create a box in which to keep something they value. To create the box, begin with four craft sticks. Place two craft sticks parallel to each other to form the front and back walls of the box. Dot glue on the ends of each stick. Place a third craft stick down to connect one end of the front wall to one end of the back wall. Repeat with the fourth craft stick to create a four-sided box. Continue building the walls by alternating craft sticks. When the box is as tall as the kids would like, guide them to glue craft sticks across the top (this will become the bottom of the box). Kids may also wish to create a separate lid. Encourage kids to write on a slip of paper at least one of the talents or abilities God has given them, fold their paper, and place it inside their box. Say When you look at your box, remember that God has a plan for you. It may be something you would consider outside of your box. His plan may involve using the talent or ability that you wrote on your paper, or it may be something that you would never have imagined. From the beginning of time, God had a special plan for Moses. Moses didn t understand God s plan for him at first, but he obeyed God. Why did God save Moses? God saved Moses to rescue His people from captivity. Prayer and Clean-Up (5 minutes) Guide kids to share any prayer requests they may have. Urge kids to share about any prayer requests that have been answered. Say God answers the prayers of His people, although sometimes it is not the way we wanted our prayer answered. Next week we will see how God answered the Israelites cries for help. Pray or allow volunteers in your group to pray. Clean-up room. Dismiss 11
