Notable Differences in the Reading of Acts Between the - N - - Translations Clay Gentry Columbia, TN clay@claygentry.com Gone are the days when nearly every person in any given congregation used the same translation. Today, it is not uncommon for upwards of four or more translations to be in use during a Bible study. This is certainly the case with the Lanton church where I preach. Nearly all the members use either the King James or New King James (with a roughly 30/70 split), while four members use the English Standard (I m included in this number) and one uses the New American Standard. For the most part, our studies are rather seamless, yet there are times when the translations differ and thus there questions arise. Different readings among translations are due in part to the variants that exist between the Majority Text and the Critical Text. While other instances can simply be attributed to translation preference. Whatever the reason, these differences are there and must be noted and at times addressed. (A caveat is necessary here; this is simply a list of differences not an explanation of why the translations are different. That would be a study for another day.) To aid us in understanding of the various readings of Acts, I have compiled a list of ninety-one notable differences in the reading of Acts among the - N - - translations. To help you better see the differences I have supplied the text of the verse(s) with the differing words in bold. These are differences that I feel as a teacher I would need to consider in either reading or explaining a passage. It is my hope that this report will be helpful to you as you teach the book of Acts.

1:13 N And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying; that is, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. 1:14 N These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. 1:15 N And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, At this time Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren (a gathering of about one hundred and twenty persons was there together), and said, 1:16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. N Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. Brethren, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. Also: 2:29; 2:37; 13:15, 26; 15:7, 13; 23:1, 6; 28:17

1:25, 26 N That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. (26) And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. To take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. (26) And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles. To take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. (26) And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. To occupy this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. (26) And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. N When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. This is a subtle difference. The /N is highlighting the disciples togetherness of mind, while the / focuses on the fact they were physically together. 2:26 N Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. Therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted; moreover my flesh also will live in hope; 2:30 N Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, And so, because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants on his throne, 2:31 N He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh suffer decay.

2:38 N Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. And Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Peter said to them, Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 2:41 N Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. 2:47 N Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. Praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. 3:19, 20 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; (20) And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of N refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, (20) and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before, Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, (20) that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; (20) and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, The difference here is not just the wording, but what is in verse 19 and 20. Similar examples can also be found in: 5:39-40; 9:28-29; 13:19-20; 15:17-18

4:24 N And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is. So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them. And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them. And when they heard this, they lifted their voices to God with one accord and said, O Lord, it is You who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them. 5:24 N Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow. Now when the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be. Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. Now when the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what would come of this. 5:39, 40 6:3 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God. (40) And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. But if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it lest you even be found to fight against God. (40) N And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God! So they took his advice, (40) and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God. (40) They took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. The difference here is not just the wording, but what is in verse 39 and 40. Similar examples can also be found in: 3:19-20; 9:28-29; 13:19-20; 15:17-18 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. N Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. See also: 8:18

6:8 N And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people. 6:13 N And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: They also set up false witnesses who said, This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; and they set up false witnesses who said, This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law, They put forward false witnesses who said, This man incessantly speaks against this holy place and the Law; 7:16 N And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem. And they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. And they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem. From there they were removed to Shechem and laid in the tomb which Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor in Shechem. 7:37 N This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear. This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, the Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear. This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren. 7:59 N And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. They went on stoning Stephen as he called on the Lord and said, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit! 8:12 N But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike.

8:22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. N Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that, if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. Similar examples: 13:44; 15:40. See 16:10 where the opposite (the Lord / God) occurs 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Then Philip said, If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I N believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." Not a part of the reading but footnoted in the margin: Some manuscripts add all or most of verse 37: And Philip said, If you believe with all your heart, you may And he replied, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God Bracketed within the reading but with explanatory footnote: [And Philip said, If you believe with all your heart, you may. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. ] Footnote: Acts 8:37 Early mss do not contain this v. Similar examples: 15:34; 24:6-8; 28:29 9:5, 6 N And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. (6) And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. And he said, Who are You, Lord? Then the Lord said, I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads. (6) So he, trembling and astonished, said, Lord, what do You want me to do? Then the Lord said to him, Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do. And he said, Who are you, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. (6) But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do. And he said, Who are You, Lord? And He said, I am Jesus whom you are persecuting, (6) but get up and enter the city, and it will be told you what you must do. 9:25 N Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket. Then the disciples took him by night and let him down through the wall in a large basket. But his disciples took him by night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a basket. But his disciples took him by night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a large basket.

9:28, 29 And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem. (29) And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him. So he was with them at Jerusalem, coming in and going out. (29) And he spoke boldly in the N name of the Lord Jesus and disputed against the Hellenists, but they attempted to kill him. So he went in and out among them at Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. (29) And he spoke and disputed against the Hellenists. But they were seeking to kill him. And he was with them, moving about freely in Jerusalem, speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord. (29) And he was talking and arguing with the Hellenistic Jews; but they were attempting to put him to death. The difference here is not just the wording, but what is in verse 28 and 29. Similar examples can also be found in: 3:19-20; 5:39-40; 13:19-20; 15: :31 N Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied. Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied. So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied. So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase. 10:6, 7 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do. (7) And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually; He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must N do. (7) And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually. He is lodging with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. (7) When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him, He is staying with a tanner named Simon, whose house is by the sea. (7) When the angel who was speaking to him had left, he summoned two of his servants and a devout soldier of those who were his personal attendants, Also: 10:32, 33 10:21 N Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come? Then Peter went down to the men who had been sent to him from Cornelius, and said, Yes, I am he whom you seek. For what reason have you come? And Peter went down to the men and said, I am the one you are looking for. What is the reason for your coming? Peter went down to the men and said, Behold, I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for which you have come?

10:30 N And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, So Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, And Cornelius said, Four days ago, about this hour, I was praying in my house at the ninth hour, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing Cornelius said, Four days ago to this hour, I was praying in my house during the ninth hour; and behold, a man stood before me in shining garments, 10:48 11:16 11:21 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. N And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days. And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days. And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days. For similar examples see note with 16:31. Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. N Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Also: 1:15, 19:4 And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord. N And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a large number who believed turned to the Lord. A subtle difference. The /N notes a great number believed and turned while the / states that a great number who believed turned. Allowing for the interpretation that not all who believed turned to the Lord. 12:5 N Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church. So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. So Peter was kept in the prison, but prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God.

13:19, 20 N And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot. (20) And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. And when He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land to them by allotment. (20) After that He gave them judges for about four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. And after destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance. (20) All this took about 450 years. And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. When He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land as an inheritance--all of which took about four hundred and fifty years. (20) After these things He gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. The difference here is not just the wording, but what is in verse 19 and 20. Similar examples can also be found in: 3:19-20; 5:39-40; 9:28-29; 15: :42 N And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath. As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these things might be spoken to them the next Sabbath. 14:15 N And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. 15:17, 18 N That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. (18) Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world. So that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, even all the Gentiles who are called by My name, says the lord who does all these things. (18) Known to God from eternity are all His works. That the remnant of mankind may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the Lord, who makes these things (18) known from of old. So that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by My name, (18) says the Lord, who makes these things known from long ago. The difference here is not just the wording, but what is in verse 15 and 18. Similar examples can also be found in: 3:19-20; 5:39-40; 9:28-29; 13:19-20

15:20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. N But that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood. But should write to them to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood. But that we write to them that they abstain from things contaminated by idols and from fornication and from what is strangled and from blood. Also: 15:29; 21:25 15:24 N And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia: Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law : to whom we gave no such commandment: They wrote this letter by them: The apostles, the elders, and the brethren, To the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia: Greetings. Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, You must be circumcised and keep the law to whom we gave no such commandment With the following letter: The brothers, both the apostles and the elders, to the brothers who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greetings. Since we have heard that some persons have gone out from us and troubled you with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions, And they sent this letter by them, The apostles and the brethren who are elders, to the brethren in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia who are from the Gentiles, greetings. Since we have heard that some of our number to whom we gave no instruction have disturbed you with their words, unsettling your souls, 15:34 15:40 Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still. N However, it seemed good to Silas to remain there. Not a part of the reading but footnoted in the margin: Some manuscripts insert verse 34: But it seemed good to Silas to remain there. Bracketed within the reading but with explanatory footnote: [But it seemed good to Silas to remain there.]footnote: Acts 15:34 Early mss do not contain this v For similar examples see: 8:37; 24:6-8; 28:29 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God. N But Paul chose Silas and departed, being commended by the brethren to the grace of God. But Paul chose Silas and departed, having been commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. But Paul chose Silas and left, being committed by the brethren to the grace of the Lord. Also: 8:22; 13:44. See 16:10 where the opposite (the Lord / God) occurs

16:7 N After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them. And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. and after they came to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them; 16:10 16:31 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them. N Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them. And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. Also: 17:27; 21:20. See 8:22 where the opposite (God / the Lord) occurs And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. So they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your N household. And they said, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household. They said, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household. Also: 15:11. Three similar examples are 9:20 where Christ (/N) becomes simply Jesus (/); 19:4 where Christ Jesus (/N) is shortened to Jesus (/); and 19:10 where Lord Jesus (/N) is also shortened to Jesus (/). 17:5 N But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. But the Jews were jealous, and taking some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd. But the Jews, becoming jealous and taking along some wicked men from the market place, formed a mob and set the city in an uproar; and attacking the house of Jason, they were seeking to bring them out to the people.

17:25 N Neither is worshipped with men s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; Nor is He worshiped with men s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. Nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. Nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; 18:5 N And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ. When Silas and Timothy had come from Macedonia, Paul was compelled by the Spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ. When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with the word, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus. But when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul began devoting himself completely to the word, solemnly testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ. 18:21 N But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus. But took leave of them, saying, I must by all means keep this coming feast in Jerusalem; but I will return again to you, God willing." And he sailed from Ephesus. But on taking leave of them he said, I will return to you if God wills, and he set sail from Ephesus. But taking leave of them and saying, I will return to you again if God wills, he set sail from Ephesus. 18:25, 26 N This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. (26) And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly. This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. (26) So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. (26) He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he was speaking and teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus, being acquainted only with the baptism of John; (26) and he began to speak out boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

19:24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen; N For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no small profit to the craftsmen. For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen. For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing no little business to the craftsmen; Also: 19:27, 35 19:31 N And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre. Then some of the officials of Asia, who were his friends, sent to him pleading that he would not venture into the theater. And even some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater. Also some of the Asiarchs who were friends of his sent to him and repeatedly urged him not to venture into the theater. 20:1 N And after the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the disciples, and embraced them, and departed for to go into Macedonia. After the uproar had ceased, Paul called the disciples to himself, embraced them, and departed to go to Macedonia. After the uproar ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouraging them, he said farewell and departed for Macedonia. After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, and when he had exhorted them and taken his leave of them, he left to go to Macedonia. 20:7, 8 N And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. (8) And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight. (8) There were many lamps in the upper room where they were gathered together. On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight. (8) There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered. On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his message until midnight. (8) There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered together.

20:15 N And we sailed thence, and came the next day over against Chios; and the next day we arrived at Samos, and tarried at Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus. We sailed from there, and the next day came opposite Chios. The following day we arrived at Samos and stayed at Trogyllium. The next day we came to Miletus. And sailing from there we came the following day opposite Chios; the next day we touched at Samos; and the day after that we went to Miletus. Sailing from there, we arrived the following day opposite Chios; and the next day we crossed over to Samos; and the day following we came to Miletus. 20:24, 25 N But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. (25) And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. (25) And indeed, now I know that you all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, will see my face no more. But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. (25) And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God. (25) And now, behold, I know that all of you, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will no longer see my face. 21:8 N And the next day we that were of Paul's company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him. On the next day we who were Paul's companions departed and came to Caesarea, and entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. On the next day we departed and came to Caesarea, and we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. On the next day we left and came to Caesarea, and entering the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, we stayed with him. 21:22 N What is it therefore? the multitude must needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come. What then? The assembly must certainly meet, for they will hear that you have come. What then is to be done? They will certainly hear that you have come. What, then, is to be done? They will certainly hear that you have come.

22:9 N And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. And those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they did not hear the voice of Him who spoke to me. Now those who were with me saw the light but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me. And those who were with me saw the light, to be sure, but did not understand the voice of the One who was speaking to me. 22:16 N And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name. Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name. 22:25, 26 N And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned? (26) When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman. And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned? (26) When the centurion heard that, he went and told the commander, saying, Take care what you do, for this man is a Roman. But when they had stretched him out for the whips, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, Is it lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned? (26) When the centurion heard this, he went to the tribune and said to him, What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen. But when they stretched him out with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman and uncondemned? (26) When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and told him, saying, What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman. 23:9 N And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God. Then there arose a loud outcry. And the scribes of the Pharisees' party arose and protested, saying, We find no evil in this man; but if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him, let us not fight against God. Then a great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees' party stood up and contended sharply, We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him? And there occurred a great uproar; and some of the scribes of the Pharisaic party stood up and began to argue heatedly, saying, We find nothing wrong with this man; suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?

24:2 N And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence, And when he was called upon, Tertullus began his accusation, saying: Seeing that through you we enjoy great peace, and prosperity is being brought to this nation by your foresight, And when he had been summoned, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying: Since through you we enjoy much peace, and since by your foresight, most excellent Felix, reforms are being made for this nation, After Paul had been summoned, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying to the governor, Since we have through you attained much peace, and since by your providence reforms are being carried out for this nation, 24:6-8 Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law. (7) But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands, (8) Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him. He even tried to profane the temple, and we seized him, and wanted to judge him according to our law. (7) But the commander Lysias came by and with great violence N took him out of our hands, (8) commanding his accusers to come to you. By examining him yourself you may ascertain all these things of which we accuse him. Portions of this passage are not a part of the reading but footnoted in the margin: (6) He even tried to profane the temple, but we seized him. (8) By examining him yourself you will be able to find out from him about everything of which we accuse him. Footnote: Some manuscripts add and we would have judged him according to our law. But the chief captain Lysias came and with great violence took him out of our hands, commanding his accusers to come before you. Portions of this passage are bracketed within the reading but with explanatory footnote: And he even tried to desecrate the temple; and then we arrested him. [We wanted to judge him according to our own Law. (7) But Lysias the commander came along, and with much violence took him out of our hands, (8) ordering his accusers to come before you.] By examining him yourself concerning all these matters you will be able to ascertain the things of which we accuse him. Footnote: The early mss do not contain the remainder of v 6, v 7, nor the first part of v 8 For similar examples: 8:37; 15:34; 28:29 24:26 N He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him. Meanwhile he also hoped that money would be given him by Paul, that he might release him. Therefore he sent for him more often and conversed with him. At the same time he hoped that money would be given him by Paul. So he sent for him often and conversed with him. At the same time too, he was hoping that money would be given him by Paul; therefore he also used to send for him quite often and converse with him.

25:6 N And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Caesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought. And when he had remained among them more than ten days, he went down to Caesarea. And the next day, sitting on the judgment seat, he commanded Paul to be brought. After he stayed among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea. And the next day he took his seat on the tribunal and ordered Paul to be brought. After he had spent not more than eight or ten days among them, he went down to Caesarea, and on the next day he took his seat on the tribunal and ordered Paul to be brought. 26:28-30 N Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian. (29) And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds. (30) And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them: Then Agrippa said to Paul, You almost persuade me to become a Christian. (29) And Paul said, I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today, might become both almost and altogether such as I am, except for these chains. (30) When he had said these things, the king stood up, as well as the governor and Bernice and those who sat with them; And Agrippa said to Paul, In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian? (29) And Paul said, Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am except for these chains. (30) Then the king rose, and the governor and Bernice and those who were sitting with them. Agrippa replied to Paul, In a short time you will persuade me to become a Christian. (29) And Paul said, I would wish to God, that whether in a short or long time, not only you, but also all who hear me this day, might become such as I am, except for these chains. (30) The king stood up and the governor and Bernice, and those who were sitting with them, 28:16 N And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him. Now when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard; but Paul was permitted to dwell by himself with the soldier who guarded him. And when we came into Rome, Paul was allowed to stay by himself, with the soldier who guarded him. When we entered Rome, Paul was allowed to stay by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him. 28:29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves. And when he had said these words, the Jews departed and had a great dispute among N themselves. Not a part of the reading but footnoted in the margin: Some manuscripts add verse 29: And when he had said these words, the Jews departed having much dispute among themselves. Bracketed within the reading but with explanatory footnote: [When he had spoken these words, the Jews departed, having a great dispute among themselves.] Footnote: Acts 28:29 Early mss do not contain this v.
