1 The night before Esther s second banquet, King Ahasuerus could not sleep. He asked a servant to bring the book of records to him. The servant read about Mordecai saving the king when two of his servants had planned to kill him. The king decided to do something nice for Mordecai. The next morning, Haman came in to see the king. Haman was going to ask the king to hang Mordecai. The king asked Haman what he thought should be done for a man the king wanted to honor. Haman thought the king must want to honor him! Haman said the king should give him one of the king s royal robes and the crown from the king s head. Then a prince should lead the man through the city on one of the king s horses. The king told Haman to do all he had suggested for Mordecai. Haman was very surprised. Haman was not the one to be honored, and the man he hated so much was the one to be honored! Haman had to obey the king. Haman led Mordecai through the streets telling everyone that Mordecai was a man the king was delighted to honor. Haman was very upset and angry. 2008, Hanna Publications.

The servant read the account of how Mordecai had saved the king when two servants had planned to kill him. The king asked his servants if any reward had ever been given to Mordecai, and he was told no. When morning arrived, Haman came in to see the king. Haman was going to ask the king for permission to hang Mordecai. The king didn t know about Haman s hate for Mordecai, and Haman didn t know the king was thinking about honoring Mordecai. The king asked Haman s advice, saying, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour? (Esther 6:6). Haman thought the king must want to honor him! Haman suggested the king reward the man by giving him one of the king s royal robes, the crown from his head, and then having the man led on one of the king s royal horses through the city. The king liked Haman s idea and told Haman to take the robe, crown and horse and do all he had suggested for Mordecai. Haman must have been stunned. He was not the one to be honored, but the man he hated so much would be honored! Haman was would have to lead Mordecai through the city on the king s horse! Haman had to obey the king. He took the king s robe and crown and put them on Mordecai. Haman sat Mordecai on the horse and led it through the streets, telling everyone that Mordecai was a man that the king was delighted to honor. After the ride through the city, Mordecai went back to his usual place, sitting at the king s gate. Haman, however, was very affected by the ordeal. He hurried back to his own house in anguish and mourning. He covered his head so no one could see the humiliation on his face. While Haman was discussing his terrible day with his wife and friends, the king s servants came to get Haman for Esther s second banquet. Haman s bad day was about to get much worse. 2008, Hanna Publications.

Mordecai went to sit at the gate in his usual spot, and Haman hid his face in humiliation and went home. King Ahasuerus could not sleep. Haman came to see the king to speak to him about hanging Mordecai. King Ahasuerus asked Haman s advice about honoring a man.
7 Pride Goes Before A Fall We can learn a lot from the examples in the book of Esther. Haman was prideful and Mordecai was humble. Haman let the praise of men become so important it consumed him. When Mordecai would not bow and honor Haman, Haman wanted revenge. Mordecai did not allow the praise of men to affect him. He didn t let it puff him up and change who he was. In the New Testament we are warned about pride.
