1 The Golden Rule Script Intro Today we are going to learn about something very special found in the Bible. It's called "The Golden Rule." It's a Bible verse found in Matthew 7:12. Let's all read it together. I will say some words first and then you repeat after me: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Do you want your mom and dad to love you when you are at home? Then you need to love your mom and dad Do you want your friends to share their toys with you when you are playing? Then you need to share your toys with them Do you want your teacher to be nice to you at school? Then you need to be nice to your teacher That's living the Golden Rule My cousin Pollyanne Pumpernickel has a great song to help us learn the Golden Rule. I told her I was visiting you today and she wanted to visit you too, over the computer. She lives far away in Louisville, KY. She's trying to become a famous country singer. Should we see if she's trying to get through?

2 Skit: Pollyanne Sings The Golden Rule P: Howdy Howdy, Cousin SL: Hi, Pollyanne It is so good to see you Boys and girls, can you say, "Hello," to Pollyanne. (Children respond.) P: Howdy to you, all my little muffin tops Cousin, I hear that you are teaching all these rodeo stars about one of my favorite verses in the Bible - The Golden Rule. Is that true? SL: It sure is, Pollyanne. And I told our friends that you have a song that could help us learn the Golden Rule. Is that true? P: I sure do. I wrote it one night when I was out riding in the hills on my horse Jupiter. SL: How is Jupiter? I miss not being able to see him very much. P: Oh, he's doing fine...now. SL: Did something happen? P: Well, Jupiter ate some old hay and it gave him quite a stomach ache. I sent for the veterinarian to help him. Well, the veterinarian was acting like he had eaten some old hay. He was kind of rude and feisty with me. But I remembered the Golden

3 Rule and I stayed as kind and sweet to him as a cold glass of lemonade with 2 scoops of sugar. And before I knew it, that veterinarian became kind too. He even said he was sorry for the way he acted. SL: Wow Living out the Golden Rule sure does work, doesn't it? P: Why most certainly Hey, cousin, can I sing you my song now for the Golden Rule? SL: We'd love that P: Alrighty. I'll go get the music while you get our two-steppers ready for the moves. SL: OK, Pollyanne Sounds good OK, boys and girls, stand on up and we are going to learn a song all about the Golden Rule. Some of the moves will go like this... (Pollyanne sings song.) SL: Pollyanne, that was a great song about the Golden Rule P: Thank you, cousin. Those sure are some nice words coming from you. Well, I better go and check on Jupiter and make sure he's not getting into any old hay again. See ya'll later

4 That was a great song that Pollyanne shared with us. I like how she reminded us that we need to do unto others as we would have them do unto us at home, at play and at school. So let's learn how we can live the Golden Rule in each of those areas. When you are at home with your mom and dad and family, you should always be ready to use the golden rule especially when you're getting dressed for the day. Did you know that God cares about the kinds of clothes we wear? Our shoes and shirts and dresses and pants are good to have on, but God wants us to wear compassion and love and kindness, patience and gentleness too. That's what our next Bible verse says so let's sing it. Song: Clothe Yourselves Now, let's play a game about different way we can show kindness to those in our family. The golden rule teaches us if youwant your family to be kind to you, you need to be kind to your family. Our game is called: What Should I Wear? Game: What Should I Wear? There's a story in the Bible about a king named David. David had a very good friend named Jonathan. ONe day Jonathan died and David was very sad. Many years passed and David wondered if his old friend Jonathan had anyone in his family

5 that he could show kindness to. David wanted to live out the golden rule. Jonathan had been kind to him and so David wanted to be kind to Jonathan's family. Jonathan had a son named Mephibosheth. But Mephibosheth could not walk. David invited Mephibosheth to his name where Mephibosheth would be taken care of the rest of his life and he would eat at King David's table where there was yummy fish, tasty carrots and delicious cakes and other wonderful foods. David treated Mephibosheth like he was his own son, like a prince. Let's keep pretending that I am Mephibosheth and play a little game. King David is so kind to me and lets me eat at his table. Mmmmmm. I'm hungry Could you bring me 3 fish? For you see I cannot walk. (Child brings 3 fish.) Repeat for 4 bunches of carrots. Repeat for 2 cakes. King David has shown me how to live the Golden Rule. Did you know that you can live the Golden Rule while playing with your friends. For example, if you want your friends to play fair, you need to play fair with them.

6 (Scruffy barks.) SL: Hey, Scruffy Whatcha doin'? (Scruffy wiggles a lot.) SL: Scruffy, you are being very playful today. Do you want someone toplay with you? (Scruffy whispers.) SL: Oh, Scruffy says he has a game inside his heart he wants to play with a friend. Who would like to ckeck Scruffy's heart? SL: It's a rope. Do you want to play tug the rope, Scruffy? OK, you put this end in your mouth and our friend will hold the other end. Now both of you give a pull. (Scruffy lets go.) SL: Scruffy, you let go. You gotta hold on to the rope and keep tugging. OK. Try it again and tug (Scruffy lets go.) SL: Scruffy, you're not playing fiar with your firend here. He wants you to keep tugging. You need toshow the Golden Rule. (Scruffy whispers.) SL: Scruffy says he doesn't know the Golden Rule. Should we tell him, boys and girls? I'll say some words first then you repeat after me...do unto other...

7 (Scruffy whispers.) SL: Scruffy says he's sorry for not playing fiar. He wants to know if you'll give him a hug. Thankyou for playing with Scruffy OK, Scruffy. I gotta teach my friends more about the Golden Rule. Say "goodbye" to Scruffy Gospel Trick: Milk and Cookies Have you ever opened up your lunch box to find some yummy cookies inside? What is your favorite cookie? Do you like: chocolate chip, oatmeal, peanut butter, chocolate, sugar or rainbow sprinkles? Cookies are yummy. They're even yummier when you share them with a friend and practice the Golden Rule. But have you ever sat by someone and they didn't share their cookies and they ate them all by themselves and you look inside their lunchbox and it's empty? That leaves you feeling empty too. But when you do share by doing unto others as you would... you may be surprised to find out that God will bless you. You won't feel empty anymore. In fact, you may even end up with more than you started with. Mmmmmm. Milk and cookies

8 So far we have learned how to do unto others... at home and at play. Should we use the Golden Rule at school too? Of course we should and you my friends are young to learn so many wonderful things this year like your letters and numbers. You'll learn about the days of the week and the months of the year. And I'll bet you'll learn about wonderful people like the president of the US and about Johnny Appleseed. Has anyone ever heard of Johnny Appleseed? Well, believe it or not I have a song to sing that will teach you about this great man who really new how to do unto... Let's pretend this is Johnny. Now get your hands ready to clap along. Song: Johnny Appleseed Did you guys know you are very blessed? You are blessed because youget to go to a Christian preschool. That means you will get tolearn about God and His Son Jesus and the Bible. YOu know I love the Bible, so let's start your school year off by playing a game called "Where Do I Belong?" It will teach us about 3 of my favorite Bible stories - Creation, Noah's Ark and when Jesus was a baby. Game: Where Do I Belong?
