6 1 Samuel 8:4-5

7 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came 5 to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him, You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have. 1 Samuel 8:4-5 (NIV)

8 But when they said, Give us a king to lead us, this 7 displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but 8 they have rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so 9 they are doing to you. Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights. 1 Samuel 8:6-9 (NIV)

9 He said, This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will 12 run in front of his chariots. Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment 13 for his chariots. 10 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage 16 and give it to his officials and attendants. 11 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. No! they 20 said. We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles. When Samuel heard all that the people said, he 22 repeated it before the Lord. 12 There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose name was Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of 2 Bekorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. 15 As they were going down to the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, Tell the servant to go on ahead of us and the servant did so but you stay here for a while, so that I may give you a message from God. 16 Saul s Kingship affirmed by fulfillment of three signs: 1. Two men meet him at Rachel s tomb to tell him his father s donkeys are safe (I Samuel 10:2) 2. Three men meet him at Bethel to offer him bread (I Samuel 10:3-4) 3. A group of prophets will meet at Gibeah with whom Saul will prophesy (I Samuel 10:5-6)

17 Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the Lord 18 at Mizpah and said to them, This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt 19 and all the kingdoms that oppressed you. But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, No, appoint a king over us.
