Explore the Bible Lesson Preview March 15, 2015 Our Great Salvation Background: Zephaniah 3:1-20 Lesson: Zephaniah: 3:8-17 Motivation: While we often associate prophecy with doom and judgment, the prophets were often the only voices of hope. In this passage we ll see judgment but also restoration and salvation. I. The Judgment to Come on Jerusalem (1-7) The Woe of verse one does not point back to the Gentile nations, but instead, points directly at Jerusalem. The Holy City is rebellious and defiled...oppressive... A. Four Classes of Sin (2) 1. Disobedience She has not obeyed 3. Distrust She has not trusted in Yahweh 2. Disdain She has not accepted discipline 4. Disengagement She has not drawn near to her God 1 / 7

B. Four Classes of Sinner (3-4) 1. Princes roaring lions 3. Prophets reckless, treacherous (4) 2. Judges wolves of the night (3) 4. Priests profane the sanctuary, they do instruction (4) violence to C. Four Qualities of the Judge (5-8) 1. Righteous The righteous Lord (5) 3. Resolute I have cut off nations (6) 2. Reliable He does not fail at dawn (5) 4. Relentless You will certainly fear Me and correction 7) accept ( II. Wait in Faith (3:8) 2 / 7

Therefore wait for Me-this is the Lord s declaration-until the day I rise up for plunder. For My decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, in order to pour out My indignation on them, all My burning anger; for the whole earth will be consumed by the fire of My jealousy. (3:8) HCSB, p.1560: 3:8 The fire of My jealousy may incorporate two OT themes: (1) Yahweh s fierce, jealous judgment of Israel by covenant curses (Dt 29:20-21) because they ignored warnings against idol worship (Dt 29:16-18); and (2) His zeal or jealousy for His people (cp. Zch 8:2), resulting in fire upon His enemies (Is 26:11) during earth s universal judgment (Is 24) to bring salvation to the remnant (Zch 8:6-8). III. Call on God (3:9-13) These verses promise restoration and a remnant, common themes for God s prophets to deliver. A. Prophecy: For I will then restore pure speech to the peoples so that all of them may call on the name of Yahweh and serve Him with a single purpose. From beyond the rivers of Cush My supplicants, My dispersed people, will bring an offering to Me. (9-10) While ultimately these verses will be fulfilled in the age of the Messiah, we have had a foretaste in modern times: 1. pure speech - The official language of Israel is Hebrew, thought long to be a dead language. If Isaiah visited Tel Aviv today, he could read a menu! Never before has a dead language come back to life. This promise is a reverse of the curse of Babel. (Gen. 11:1ff) 2. From beyond the rivers of Cush My supplicants, My dispersed people, will bring an offering to Me On Saturday, May 25, 1991, 14,400 Ethiopian Jews were brought to Israel in an emergency airlift to protect them from warring factions. If not a direct fulfillment of this prophecy, then the incident is certainly a wonderful foretaste of God bringing worshippers from the distant parts of the earth to Jerusalem. B. Purity On that day you will not be put to shame because of everything you have done in rebelling against Me. For then I will remove your proud, arrogant people from among you, and you will never again be haughty on My Holy mountain. (11) Israel s arrogant defiance of God and His laws led to judgment, exile and ruin. At this point in 3 / 7

history only ruin lies ahead. Yet, this promise tells of a better day for Jerusalem when pure worship will return. C. Protection I will leave a meek and humble people among you, and they will take refuge in the name of Yahweh. (12) Whereas the arrogant didn t need God, the meek and humble take refuge in Him. D. Profession The remnant of Israel will no longer do wrong or tell lies; a deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouths. But they will pasture and lie down, with nothing to make them afraid. ( 13) Israel will finally have an honest relationship with God. In the OT, idolatry is often referenced as sexual promiscuity or adultery (cf. Hosea ). Such immorality is impossible to hide without lies. IV. Celebrate Salvation (3:14-17) These words are directed not only to the end times but also to God s people everywhere. They give us a picture of God s nature, of how He desires to treat His people. No matter the trial or threat, God s people can always depend on Him to ultimately restore them to rejoicing and gladness. (14) A. Singing Sing for joy, Daughter Zion; shout loudly, Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem! (14) John Piper answers the question Is it true that Christianity is unique in the fact that it is a singing and rejoicing faith? His reply, Absolutely. I don t think there are any other religions that sing like Christians sing. Christians really make music over their faith. We see that from the earliest days of Christianity when Paul wrote to the Ephesians speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music from your heart to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19). I have witnessed joyful Christians singing from China to Africa, from some of the poorest nations to the richest. Singing with joy is truly a hallmark of Christianity. 4 / 7

B. Pardoned The Lord has removed your punishment; He has turned back your enemy. The King of Israel, Yahweh, is among you; you need no longer fear harm. On that day it will be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, Zion, do not let your hands grow weak. ( 15-16) Judgment is getting what you deserve (Rom. 6:23). Mercy is not getting what you deserve. (Heb. 2:17) However, from Emmanuel ( God with us ) we receive grace which is getting what we don t deserve (Ephesians 2:8-9). C. Strengthened Yahweh your God is among you, a warrior who saves. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will bring you quietness with His love. He will delight in you with shouts of joy. (17) D. Personal among you (15 & 17) Our God is not a distant and removed deity. He desires a personal relationship with us through Jesus Christ. E. Powerful warrior who saves (17) The name Jesus refers to one who saves. At the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, the crowds cried Hos anna which can be translated Save us now we pray! In stating His own mission, Jesus said For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost. (Luke 19:10) A warrior is a military figure, one who fights. It s comforting to know that we are not in this spiritual struggle alone. F. Praiseworthy - Three statements conclude this verse with actions God takes toward His people: rejoice over you with gladness bring you quietness with His love delight in you with shouts of joy. All three describe actions we would normally direct at God in praise. To think that He rejoices, loves and delights in us is truly praiseworthy and sources of strength. V. Restoration of a Remnant (3:18-20) Application: 5 / 7

1. The Day of the Lord reminds us of God s ultimate judgment over the nations. 2. Prophecy and its fulfillment reminds us that God is in control and knows our futures. 3. God s promises to His people remind us of His loving nature toward those who believe.
