2 Explorer (Grade 1) & Trail Blazer (Grades 2-5) Plans May 1, 2016 Memory Verse: Matthew 7:12 Do for others what you would like them to do for you. Theme & Bible Account: Who Is My Neighbor? Today s Key Point: Jesus said, love your neighbor as yourself. Our neighbor is not just a person who lives near us but also anyone we come in contact with. Jesus wants us to treat others the way we want to be treated (with kindness, love & forgiveness etc.) Bible Passages: Matthew 22:36-40 & Luke 10:25-37 Snack: Ritz Crackers Introduction: Instruct the students to turn to a partner and tell him/her about one of his/her neighbors. Briefly discuss that most of us think of the people who live next door or across the street from us as our neighbors. But, a neighbor can be anyone we meet. Read aloud Matthew 22: Explain that Jesus wants us to be kind to our neighbors (both the people who live near us and others who do not live near us.) Say, The Bible tells us how we are to treat our neighbors. Let s check it out! Lesson: Explorers: Read aloud pages from The Read and Learn Bible. Read aloud the memory verse Matthew 7:12. Explain that this Bible verse is called The Golden Rule. Briefly discuss: What are some things that are made of gold? (rings & other jewelry, crowns etc) What does gold make you think of? Why do you think this verse is known as The Golden Rule? How do you like to be treated? How can you follow The Golden Rule and be a good neighbor? Then, hold up a picture of Superman. Ask, Who is this? Why is he a Super Hero? Open The Read and Learn Bible and point to the picture of The Good Samaritan. Explain to the children that this is Super Sam! He is a real Super Hero because he loved and cared for the hurting man. Super Sam is a Super Hero because he followed The Golden Rule! When you follow The Golden Rule, you are Super Sam or Hero too! Show video on flashdrive: Good Samaritan (Kids) Springs Rescue Mission Trailblazers: Read together Matthew 22: Have children underline or highlight verse 29. Then, read aloud the memory verse Matthew 7:12. Explain that this Bible verse is called The Golden Rule. (Have students highlight this verse as well.) Briefly discuss: What are some things that are made of gold? (rings & other jewelry, crowns etc) What does gold make you think of? Why do you think this verse is known as The Golden Rule? How do you like to be treated? How can you follow The Golden Rule and be a good neighbor? Finally, hold up a picture of Superman. Ask, Who is this? Why is he a Super Hero? Explain to
3 the children there is another Super Hero. His name is Super Sam! Read together Luke 10: Then, say, The Good Samaritan is a real Super Hero because he loved and cared for the hurting man. Super Sam is a Super Hero because he followed The Golden Rule! When you follow The Golden Rule, you are Super Sam Hero too! Show video on flashdrive: Good Samaritan (Kids) Springs Rescue Mission Activities: Explorers: -Golden Ruler Measuring Activity -Hidden Objects Picture Puzzle Trailblazers: -Golden Ruler Scavenger Hunt: Divide students into pairs. Give each pair a Golden Ruler, a Scavenger Hunt Sheet and a pencil. Students should work with their partner to find items in the room that are closest to each of the measurements listed on the Scavenger Hunt Sheet. -Discussion: Read aloud and discuss the situations on the How Do YOU measure up? Sheet -Crack the Code Good Samaritan sheet Closing: When the usher signals five minutes remaining, together create and write a one or two sentence Trail Log entry. Ask, What was the most important part of our Bible TREK today? What main point did we learn? What significant moment took place? Record it in the log. Be sure to put down the date and please write legibly! Dismissal: When church is over, hand out any coloring papers etc., and close in prayer. Then, escort the children to the sanctuary. Be sure to leave the room neat and clean. Put any unused items in the appropriate bin in the metal cabinet. Thank you!

Theme & Bible Account: Who are the Super Samaritans in My Life? Today s Key Point: Jesus wants us to treat other the way we would like to be treated. When we make excuses for not helping others, we are refusing to follow the Golden Rule. On the other hand, when we show kindness and help others, we are following the Golden Rule! Who in your life is a Super Samaritan? Bible Passages: Matthew 22:36-40 & Luke 10:25-37 Snack: Golden Grahams Cereal Introduction: While the children are eating their GOLDen grahams, review the memory verse. Remind children that this Bible verse is known as the Golden Rule. Elicit a list from children of things that are made of gold. Talk about how things made of gold are special or valuable. This Bible verse is special. Briefly discuss ways we should all treat others. (Be kind, gentle, patient, helpful etc.) Show video on flashdrive: The Parable of the Good Samaritan (David Hill) Lesson: Explorers: Gather children on the floor. Hold up the picture of Superman. Explain that we are learning about a real hero in the Bible. His name is Super Sam! The Samaritan was a hero because he followed the Golden Rule and helped a hurting man. Explain to the students that sometimes, we make excuses for why we can t help someone. Read aloud the list of excuses on page 40 (see attached). Tell students, If you have ever used this excuse for not helping someone, stand up and make an X with your arms across your chest. (Demonstrate.) After reading each excuse, pause for children to stand and make the X. Then, instruct them to sit back down. Continue until you have read all the excuses. Finally, read aloud pages from The Read and Learn Bible. Discuss: Who were the ones who made excuses (in their minds) for not helping the hurt man? Who did not make excuses, but followed the Golden Rule and helped? Ask, Who in your life is a Super Sam? Remind children that it is Mother s Day! Mom is a Super Sam. She is always helping us! Trailblazers: Follow the attached lesson plan on pages from Bible Ventures. Do the excuses activity with the name tags. Next, read together Luke 10: Discuss: Who were the ones who made excuses (in their minds) for not helping the hurt man? Who did not make excuses, but followed the Golden Rule

Theme & Bible Account: How does a Super Samaritan treat others? Today s Key Point: Jesus wants us to treat other the way we would like to be treated. When we show kindness and help others, we are following the Golden Rule! Real heroes or Super Sams serve others with kindness, love and forgiveness. Bible Passages: Matthew 22:36-40 & Luke 10:25-37 Snack: Pretzels Introduction: Review the memory verse. Remind students that this Bible verse is known as The Golden Rule. Challenge small groups to recite the verse together. Give a Gold Star sticker to each student who recites the verse with his/her group. Next, elicit a list of community workers who follow the Golden Rule and help others on their jobs. (Explorers- Use the popsicle stick puppets.) Briefly discuss how police officers, soldiers, teachers, doctors etc serve others with kindness. Read aloud 1 Peter 4:10 and Ephesians 4:32. Explain that real heroes or Super Samaritans are people who are helpful and kind and forgiving. Show video on flashdrive: The Good Samaritan Story (Wild Bible Animation) Lesson: Explorers: Read aloud pages from The Beginner s Bible Family Favorites New Testament. Then, perform the Instant Dramas (see attached.) Trailblazers: Read together Luke 10: Then, perform the Instant Dramas (see attached.) Activities: Explorers: -Good Samaritan Memory Matching Game -Color sheet -Excuses Bean Bag Toss (Minister reads slips of paper. Memory Verse: Matthew 7:12 Do for others what you would like them to do for you. Theme & Bible Account: Am I a Super Samaritan? Today s Key Point: We can all be heroes! We are Super Samaritans when we follow The Golden Rule by serving others with kindness and love! Bible Passages: Matthew 22:36-40 & Luke 10:25-37 Snack: snack cakes & Juice Boxes Introduction: Tell students that today we are celebrating real heroes! Acknowledge children who are dressed up as a modern-day hero. Allow children to tell about who they are and why they are a hero. If a child is not dressed up, that is fine too! Use the opportunity to build him/her up and declare him/her as a Super Sam. Remind students that anyone who follows the Golden Rule by serving others with kindness and love is a real hero! Review the memory verse. Challenge small groups to recite the verse together. Give a Gold Star sticker to each student who recites the verse with his/her group. Show video on flashdrive: Parable of the Good Samaritan (Quodvultdeus) Lesson: Explorers: Read aloud pages from The Beginner s Bible Family Favorites New Testament. Then, watch the Veggie Tales version of The Good Samarian. Trailblazers: Read aloud pages from The Read and Learn Bible. Then, ask, Where do real Super Heroes like Super Sam and YOU get your SUPER powers? Say, Being kind, helpful, forgiving and loving to ALL people NO MATTER what is not natural. It takes SUPER-NATURAL power! We get SUPER-NATURAL power from The Holy Spirit. Read aloud Galatians 5: Explain that when we stay close to Jesus, The Holy Spirit will give us power to be loving, kind etc. Say a brief prayer asking the Holy Spirit to give us all SUPER powers from God to be Super Sams! Activities: Explorers: -Good Samaritan Memory Matching Game -Read aloud the marked pages in The Stories of Jesus picture book.

10 Design your own Super Sam logo! Here is Superman s logo. Follow these steps to create your own Super Sam logo! 1. Choose your overall shape. (triangle, diamond, circle etc.) 2. Make a Block Letter S for Super Sam. (You could also do S.S. or your initials, since you are the Super Hero!) 3. Choose your background color and the color of your letter(s). 4. Color in your logo!
