Telephone: (voice calls only, no texting) rebbe.tice@gmail.com Skype: pastor.tice Course Identification: Course Number: LAN Course Credits: 24 units Course Name: Biblical Aramaic I Prerequisites: none Class Location: online Course Description This 2-week course will cover Biblical Aramaic Grammar and Exegesis. This is the language used for Daniel 2-7 and small portions of Ezra, Jeremiah, and Genesis, as well as the Elephantine Papyri, the Targumim and several other Jewish writings (both mainstream and Messianic). This course will work from the Ashuri block script form of Aramaic, which is also associated with Biblical Hebrew. Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate: Da at (Theoria): basic knowledge of the grammatical structure of Biblical Aramaic Binah (Praxis): ability to read and comprehend Biblical Aramaic Chochma (Poiesis): practical exegesis of Biblical Aramaic texts and idioms therein Required Course Texts & Course Materials Holladay, William L. 2 LAN Syllabus Assessment Essay assignments and research projects will be evaluated on a standard grading rubric. Written examinations will be graded according to content (multiple choice, fill-in-the blank, short answer, and/or essay). This course will be conducted in an online format combining textbook readings and assignments with video presentations and skype support. Vocabulary and Grammar evaluations will be conducted regularly, and vocalization audits will be conducted by skype or phone. Student Homework Policy Statement: International Messianic Torah Institute (IMTI) syllabi contain assignments in alignment with the federal government s definition of appropriate assigned homework for each unit hour. For each hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction, two hour of out of class student work will be assigned. (For example, a 24-unit course will include an average of 4 hours of homework each week for 2 weeks). Assignments are directly relevant to course objectives and learning outcomes and are included at the end of the syllabi. Each assignment will be graded and recorded by the instructor. Course Requirements and Assignments Textbook readings and exercises Discussion Board Forums (0): The Discussion Boards will cover the texts Midterm Examination and 0 Quizzes Capstone Project Vocalization Sessions (0-minute skype connections every other week) Course Grading and Policies Points The grade for Biblical Aramaic I will be based on the following: Scale Discussion Board Forums (0 at pts each) 0 Textbook assignments ( at 0 pts each) 0 Quizzes (8 at 5 pts each) Vocalizations (5 at 5 pts each) 75 Midterm Examination 0 Capstone Project 5 Total 000 A = ; A- = 9 939; B+ = ; B = ; B- = ; C+ = 8 839; C = ; C- = ; D+ = ; D = ; D- = ; F =679 and below Late Assignments Policy If students is unable to compete an assignment on time, then they must contact the instructor immediately by . Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 0% deduction. 2

3 LAN Syllabus Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a % deduction. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the class will not be accepted. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted. Style Guidelines Parsing sheets are provided at the end of this syllabus; all translation work should be accompanied by completed parsing sheets when applicable. These will be provided in a fillable format (Word 07) for ease of completion. The approved Aramaic/Hebrew fonts for this course are available for free download from the following links: SIL Ezra (dl free from BST Hebrew (dl free from One of these two fonts should be used on all homework exercises and projects submitted for this course to ensure that instructor is able to read your Aramaic work. If the instructor and/or grader cannot read it, a zero grade for that portion of the assignment will be the result. 3

For all discussion boards, original posts must be made by Tuesday at 7:00 PM EDT; you have until the close of Friday (sunset) to complete responses to your classmates' posts.
