1 1 2 5/21/17 Zechariah 9-10 The remaining chapters are prophetic revelation not visions. Zech The first major division dealt with prophecies before the building of the temple consisting three part parts. Zach The visions imparted to Zechariah by God in one night, dated 520 B.C. Zech. 1:1-6:8 2. The prophetic crowning of Joshua that pointed to the crowning of Jesus in the Kingdom Age, dated 518 B.C. Zech. 6: The group of men that came from Babylon to ask of God if they should continue to observe certain feast days, as during the captivity and the future Kingdom Age. Zech. 7:1-8:23 The second major division deals with prophecies after the building of the temple. Zach All are undated, some have guessed about 480 B.C.? 2. Chapters 9-11 center on the Messiah s First Coming and rejection with inferences to His Second Coming. Zach Chapters center on the Messiah s Second Coming and enthronement with inferences to His First Coming. Zach * These last three chapters are all to be fulfilled during the seven years of Great-Tribulation and the Kingdom Age, with a few exception. Zech. 12:10; 13: Both sections are depicted by the phrase burden implying judgment. a. The burden against Israel s enemies. Zach. 9:1 b. The burden against Israel. Zach. 12:1 9:1-8 The Judgment on Israel s enemies. 9:1-2b The cities of Syria. 1) The word burden massa, means oracle of judgment, with the idea of carrying and proclaiming it. vs. 1a 2) The source of the judgment is the word of the LORD, the covenant God, Yahewh. vs. 1a 3) The judgment is directed againt Hadrach, and Damascus, north of Israel in Syria. vs. 1a-b a) Hadrack means dwelling in modern day Lebenon. b) Damascus means silent is the sackcloth weaver, the capital of Syria. c) Its resting place probably refers to it dependence for protection. d) The comentary, For the eyes of men And all the tribes of Israel Are on the LORD refers to Israel and the Gentile nations attention fixed on Alexander the Great, as he was conquering the world. vs. 1c 4) The city of Hamath fortress, in th upper Syria in the valley of the Orontes, bordering

2 3 4 Damascus also was to be judged by God. vs. 2a-b 9:2c-4 The Syro-Pheoncian cities. 1) Judgment would come to Tyre and Sidon, though they are very wise. vs. 2c-d * They were known for being master meriners of the sea and building ships. Ezk. 27 2) Judgment would come to Tyre and Sidon though being powerful and wealthy. vs. 3 a) Tyre Tsor, means a rock, fortress or citadel on the Medterranean coast, north of Israel and Sidon Tsiydown, means hunting, north of Tyre. b) Tyre had built herself a massive wall 150 foot high, about a half a mile from mainland. vs. 3a-b b) Tyre had Heaped silver like the dust and gold like mire of the street, meaning common and abundance. vs. 3c 3) God would cast her out destroying her power in the sea and devour her by fire. vs. 4 a) The word Behold is an expression of paying attention, regardless of their seeming safe security Yahweh would cast her out. vs. 4a b) Destroy her power in the sea, her commerce and her very city with fire. vs. 4b-d 1)) Tyre was besieged by Shalmaneser for 5 years, 13 by Nebuchadnezzar without conquest, as they moved everything out to the Island. 2)) But Alexander the Great seized it for 7 months and scrapped the inland city of its rubble and dumped it into the sea, building a causeway out to the island city in fulfillment. Ezk. 26:4-5, 14 9:5-7 The cities of the Philistines. 1) Ashkelon iin observing the destruction of Tyre and Sidon would fear, be petrified as the news and seeing the destruction. vs. 5a 2) Gaza would be very sorrowful chuwl, to wait anxiously for their doom. vs. 5b 3) Ekron, seeing their financial benefit gone, for He dried up her expectation, their commerce with Tyre was gone. vs. 5c * Jeremiah prophecied this also. Jer. 47:4 4) The king from Gaza would perish. vs. 5d 5) Ashkelon would become uninhabited. vs. 5e a) Alexander the Great fulfilled all this as he worked his way to the Philistines, then Egypt who also was in fear over their devastation. Is. 23:5 b) Alexander died at 33 years of age after drunken party and walking home in the rain and catching pneumonia. 6) The inhabitance of Ashdod would be people of low class, God cutting off the pride of Ashdod. vs. 6 * The phrase mixed race mamzer can mean illegitmate children or intermixed

KJV translates it bastard, an illegitamate child. 7) Their abominable idolatry would be removed and kingship, being assimilated into Israel as the Jebusites were in David s time. vs. 7 9:8 The city of Jerusalem would be sapared. 1) God would protect it, I will camp around My house Because of the army. vs. 8a 2) The reason Because of him Alexander the Great who first went down to Egypt on his conquest, then up to Jerusalem, who passes by and him who returns. vs. 8b 3) God would not allow an oppressor pass Alexanser through them, the Jews. vs. 8c 4) God affirmed this, For now I have seen with My eyes. vs. 8d a) Alexander had a vision of a man meeting him who knew the living God and showed him the book of Daniel that he would conquer the world. Jerome b) Alexander made sacrifiee and spared Jerusalem. c) God used Alexander to permeate the world with the Greek language for the Gospel. 9:9-10 The coming of the Messiah of Israel. 9:9 The First Coming of Messiah. 1) The verses predict the First and Second Coming of Jesus as many Old Testament prophecies contain a two-fold fulfillment. Is. 61:1-3 2) Traditionally called The Triumphal Entry but it was anything but that, more like the Tragic Rejection. vs. 9 a) Matthew quotes this verse of Zechariah, but only in its partial fulfillment. Matt. 21:4-5; Lk. 19:37-40; Mk. 11:2; Jn. 12:14-15) b) He didn t quote Rejoice greatly nor He is just and having salvation, deliverance or victory, this is to be fulfilled at His Second Coming. 2) His character is depicted. a) King of the Jews riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey. * Kings rode on donkeys. b) Lowly in contrast to the proud Alexander the Great. * The amazing prophecy of Daniel was fulfilled 483 years or 170,880 days from March 14, 445 b.c. when Artaxerxes gave the command to Nehemiah to restore Jerusalem. Dan. 9: :10 The Second Coming of Messiah. 1) God will intervien and defend Israel and Jerusalem against her enemies at the battle against Jerusalem and that of Armegeddon. vs. 10a-b a) Ephraim is used for the whole of the ten northern tribes, Israel.

4 7 8 b) Jerusalem represents, Judah the southern tribes of Benjamin and Judah. c) There are no lost tribes of Israel. 2) God shall establish the Kingdom Age. vs. 10c-e a) He shall speak peace to the nations, And from the River to the ends of the earth. vs. 10c * He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore. Is. 2:4 b) His dominion shall be from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth. vs. 10d-e 1)) The sea to sea is the Mediterranean to the Dead Sea, the area of Israel. 2)) The River refers to the Euphrates to the entire earth. * For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. Is. 9:6-7 9:11-10:12 The deliverance and blessing of Israel. 9:11-12 The basis of God s actions is the covenant. 1) God encourageous them to return to Zion, the captivity was over, The blood of your covenant, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. vs. 11 a) At Mount Sinai the covenant was made. b) God s favor and graciousness due to the covenant. Ex. 24:8 2) God encouraged the captives to return under His protection, Return to the stronghold, You prisoners of hope. Even today I declare That I will restore double to you. vs. 12 * Double to you indicates the complete and full restoration. Is. 40:2; 61:7 9:13 The people returning to the land would be helped by God to defeat Greece. * This is during the 400 year of silence between Malachi and John the Baptist, called theinter-testmental period. 1) God presents Himself by metephors of war as the Worrior for Israel using the people of Israel as a metaphor for His weapons to stand against their enemies and defeat them, For I have bent Judah, My bow, Fitted the bow with Ephraim, And raised up your sons, O Zion. vs. 13a-e

5 9 10 2) The enemy was Alexander the Great and those that came after him, Against your sons, O Greece, And made you like the sword of a mighty man. vs. 13d-h a) God helped the Maccabees against Antiochus Epiphanea, a type of the Antichrist. Dan. 8:9-14, 11:32 b) He sacrifice a pig on the altar desecrating it, and made the priest to eat pigs meat, they defeated him and rededicated the temple by God miraclulously providing the oil for the lamps, this is the feast of Hanukah,, De. 25, 165 B.C. 9:14-15 The promised victory by God in the battle. 1) The battle described, God would be fighting for them, Then the LORD will be seen over them, And His arrow will go forth like lightning. The Lord GOD will blow the trumpet, And go with whirlwinds from the south. vs. 14 * Commanding, leading and fighting for them! 2) The victory declared, The LORD of hosts will defend them; They shall devour and subdue with slingstones. They shall drink and roar as if with wine; They shall be filled with blood like basins, Like the corners of the altar. vs. 15 a) The Captain of the armies of heaven is the protector and defender of the Jews. b) The victory is vividly described, shall devour, subdue and filled with blood, all infavor of Israel. 9:16-10:1 The promised day of salvation. 1) Yahweh would save and reconcile the adulterous wife, The LORD Yahweh their God will save them in that day. vs. 16a a) The phrase that day is used in chapter to indicate the final and complete restoration of the remnant of Israel in the last days of the Great-Tribulation and Second Coming. b) In our context it refers to the Maccabean victory. 2) God was their Shepherd watching out for them, As the flock of His people. vs. 16b * Know that the LORD, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Ps. 100:3 3) God would value them as precious, For they shall be like the jewels of a crown. vs. 16c * The word for crown nezer is the same as for the High Priest. 4) God would honor them, Lifted like a banner over His land. vs. 16d * In joyous oneness of God and His people. 5) The earthly blessings of Israel celebrated, For how great is its goodness And how great its beauty! vs. 17a

6 11 12 b) The materisl blessings, Grain shall make the young men thrive, And new wine the young women. vs. 17b-c * The church is promised spiritual blessings, not physical ones! Eph. 1:3 3) The source of the blessing is rain. vs. 1 * Verse one should be the last verse of chapter nine, it is a better brake. a) Being reconciled they can ask the LORD for the latter rain. March or April for harvest. vs. 1a * Rain indicated blessings from God, no rain, cursings. Deut. 11:14; Amos 4:7 b) God was going to open up the heavens, The LORD will make flashing clouds; He will give them showers of rain, Grass in the field for everyone. vs. 1c-d 10:2-3 The condemnation of idols and false prophets. 1) Idolatry is deception, For the idols speak delusion. vs. 2a a) Idols t@raphiym, were household images that indicated headship of family and heirship. b) Rachel stold them from Laben. Gen. 31:32 2) The diviners envision lies, And tell false dreams; They comfort in vain. vs. 2b-d a) Diviners qacem, means they attempted to foretell the future through the ocult. b) The medium was false dreams through demons. * Balaam the prophet was one. Num c) Their words were empty of no benefit. 3) The conseqiences was spiritual deception. vs. 2d-e a) They followed blindly, Therefore the people went their way like sheep. vs. 2d b) They were in danger, They are in trouble because there is no shepherd. vs. 2e * Shepherds to teach them the word of God and not be deceived! Jer. 23; Ezk. 34; Matt. 23; 2Pet. 2 4) The punishment of the false shepherds. vs. 3 a) God would atend to it, My anger is kindled against the shepherds, And I will punish the goatherds. vs. 3a-b b) God would search out the house of Judah and deal with the false prophets, For the LORD of hosts will visit His flock, The house of Judah, And will make them as His royal horse in the battle. vs. 3c-e * The LORD of hosts, the captain of the armies of heaven. 10:4 The Messsiah would come from the tribe of Judah. 1) From him comes the cornerstone. vs. 4a a) Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily. Is. 28:16

7 13 14 b) The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. Ps. 118:22 c) Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame. Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone, 1Pet. 2:6-7 2) From him the tent peg. vs. 4b a) The key of the house of David I will lay on his shoulder; So he shall open, and no one shall shut; And he shall shut, and no one shall open. I will fasten him as a peg in a secure place, And he will become a glorious throne to his father s house. They will hang on him all the glory of his father s house, the offspring and the posterity, all vessels of small quantity, from the cups to all the pitchers. Is. 22:22-24 b) And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, These things says He who is holy, He who is true, He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens Rev. 3:7 3) From him the battle bow. vs. 4c a) The help against their enemies. b) The victory. 4) From him every ruler together. vs. 4d a) The anointing of leaders. b) The unity of the nation. 10:5-7 The promise of God to strengthen them as they returned to fight against Greece. 1) They would be fiece, They shall be like mighty men, Who tread down their enemies In the mire of the streets in the battle. vs. 5a-b a) This is the period of the Maccabees. b) Josephus wrote about this period. 2) Their confidence would be in God, They shall fight because the LORD is with them, And the riders on horses shall be put to shame. vs. 5c-d 3) God would be behind their return, I will strengthen the house of Judah, And I will save the house of Joseph. I will bring them back. vs. 6a-c a) Judah the Southern Kingdom. b) House of Joseph the Northern Kingdom. c) But not as two, but one nation, no longer divided. 4) God s forgiveness was complete, Because I have mercy on them. They shall be as though I had not cast them aside; For I am the LORD their God, And I will hear them. vs. 6d-g 5) The courageous men of Ephraim and their children would rejoice in the LORD, Those of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man, And their heart shall rejoice as if with wine. Yes,

8 15 16 their children shall see it and be glad; Their heart shall rejoice in the LORD. vs. 7 shall walk up and down in His name, Says the LORD. vs :8-12 The scattering and re-gathering of them by God. 1) God will bring them back from the Babylonian captivity, I will whistle for them and gather them, For I will redeem them; And they shall increase as they once increased. vs. 8 * Like a shepherd to his sheep! 2) God will disburst them again after they reject their Messiah, I will sow them among the peoples, And they shall remember Me in far countries; They shall live, together with their children, And they shall return. vs. 9 3) God will regather them in the last days prior to the Kingdom Age, I will also bring them back from the land of Egypt, And gather them from Assyria. I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon, Until no more room is found for them. vs. 10 * In other words as God did in the past! 4) God will keep His promised. He shall pass through the sea with affliction, And strike the waves of the sea: All the depths of the River shall dry up. Then the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, And the scepter of Egypt shall depart. vs. 11 5) God will be their total dependency, So I will strengthen them in the LORD, And they
