10/28/18 TruStory Bible Passage: Exodus 24 (Mount Sinai) God Initiates Relationship Remember Verse Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5 6 Inspire Shares personal stories from fellow ministry leaders about how God has worked in their lives I used to babysit a boy named Luke. As a baby, he always wanted to be cuddled and hardly ever cried. But something happened after Luke turned three. He didn t want to be cuddled, his favorite word became no, and some days he wouldn t say a word to me. I still loved Luke, but most of the time I didn t want to go out of my way to show my love because it wasn t reciprocated. After a year of this, I received a call that would change everything. Luke s mom told me that he d said to her, Mommy, I miss Lauren. Where is she? She asked him why he missed me, and he replied, Because today she said she loved me even though I didn t share my toys with her. The situation with Luke may have been a struggle, but in the end it modeled a valuable lesson: Because God loves us, I m called to love others no matter what. Because He initiates relationship with us, I m called to initiate relationship with others. Though we re sinful, unloving, selfish people, God still initiates relationship with us. Lauren Francis Tru Team Equip Offers perspective and context to the lesson s Bible passage God initiates relationship. The Mosaic covenant gives a great example of this in that it arose out of God s desire for relationship with His people. God initiated relationship with the future Israelites through the covenant He made with Abraham (formerly Abram). Through this covenant, God set in motion His plan to redeem His people back to Himself. He continued to initiate relationship when He revealed Himself to Moses as the Lord who had heard His people s cries (Exodus 3), freed them from slavery (Exodus 12), and provided for them in the wilderness (Exodus 16). In Exodus 19 24, God gave His people the Ten Commandments as part of the Mosaic covenant. This marked the beginning of a new era in the history of God s people. God freed them from Egypt so they could worship only Him. This covenant with Moses was God s revelation of how He wanted to be worshipped (Exodus 3:12). More specifically, it was the administrative covenant that served to regulate the life of the people to protect and preserve them for receiving the blessings promised in the Abrahamic covenant. The Mosaic covenant demanded not only that the Israelites conform to a set of laws but also that their hearts be oriented toward God. And from this point on, the plight of the Israelites hinged on whether or not they stayed faithful to the covenant with God that they accepted at Mount Sinai. The Mosaic covenant was a conditional covenant with blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. The Mosaic covenant was also a foretaste of what was to come the new covenant that would not be written

on tablets of stone but on the hearts and in the minds of all those who believe (Hebrews 8:10). Support Provides reflection and assessment through encouragement, prayer, and time in God s Word In Matthew 22:37 39 Jesus spoke of the Ten Commandments, saying, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. Some days, following these commands seems impossible. But as those who ve chosen to trust and obey Jesus, we have the Holy Spirit to empower us and Jesus life to show us what living out these commands looks like. Spend time reading these verses and pray God will soothe your weary soul and help you learn from the life of your Savior. Pray God will teach you how to love Him and others by showing you how to be more like Him. SMALL GROUP Children engage in fun, creative activities designed to pique their curiosity about the day s portion of The Big God Story. Option 1: Friendship Web (K- 2 nd Gr) God initiated relationship with His people, and He wants us to get to know Him better and better. With this activity, encourage the children to get to know one another better. Skein or ball of yarn Gather children into a circle on the floor. Give one child the yarn. Explain that this child will hold the end of the yarn and answer a question from the leader (see sample questions below). Then he ll toss the yarn to another child, who will answer a question from the leader and then toss the yarn to another child. The process should continue with new questions and answers. Keep going until everyone has answered a question and you ve created a web of yarn. Some sample questions: What s your favorite thing to do with your family? If you could have any animal for a pet, what would it be? Would you rather be able to fly or be able to turn invisible? Why? Where is your favorite place in your home? What toppings would you put on your perfect pizza? Once you ve created a web with everyone in the group, you can give your kids a challenge: try to go backwards, in the opposite order, to try to undo the web! Many years before God made a promise to the Israelites at Mount Sinai, He had declared them to be His people and had a relationship with them. As we grow in relationship with one another, we remember that the God who knows us better than anyone desires to be in relationship with us!

Option 2: Friendship Challenge (3 rd 5 th Gr) Children will use cards with prompts to get to know one another better. Challenge cards (see Resources) Scissors PREPARE AHEAD Print and cut apart the Challenge cards. Make sure you have a few cards for each child. As the kids arrive, give each one of them two or three cards. Many years before God made a promise to the Israelites at Mount Sinai, He declared them to be His people and had a relationship with them. As we grow in relationship with one another, we remember that the God who knows us better than anyone desires to be in relationship with us! Let s get to know some new friends by doing some fun challenges. Encourage the children to use their Challenge cards to initiate friendships with people they don t know (or don t know well). LARGE GROUP Children participate in discovering God s Word through Bible verse memorization, interactive storytelling techniques, and worship as response. Traditions and Remember Verse Remember Verse image (see Resources) Remember Verse animation (see Resources) Mementos for your church Traditions (rocks, marbles, gum balls, etc.) Give the children mementos (such as rocks, marbles, or blocks) for accomplishments such as memorizing the Remember Verse or bringing their Bibles. Have them put the objects into a clear container or add them to a structure, and celebrate when it s complete. This week s Remember Verse focuses on a character trait of God that s highlighted in today s portion of The Big God Story. Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5 6 Connect QUESTION Who is one person who started a relationship with you? The Big God Story Bible Passage: Exodus 24 Storytelling Technique: Actions, Images, Sounds, and Props God Initiates Relationship

Timeline image (see Resources) Bibles Images: Mount Sinai, Ten Commandments, Volcano Lightning (see Resources) Sound effect: Thunder and Lightning (see Resources) Treasured personal possession (owned by Storyteller) Pillows (10 15) Optional: paper lunch bags (10 15), newspaper, tape SET UP Place the Storyteller s treasured possession near the storytelling area. Optional: Stuff the lunch bags with newspaper and tape them shut. Place them in an inconspicuous place onstage. I m going to make some motions to help us all remember what happened to God s people in The Big God Story last week. Raise your arms above your head, put your fingertips together, and move out your elbows to create a peak to represent a mountain. What s really tall and points up to the sky? Invite responses. Yes, a mountain. God called Moses to go up a mountain named Sinai. Tech: Cue Mount Sinai image. There, God gave something to Moses (hold up 10 fingers). Actually, God gave Moses 10 things. What did God give him? Invite responses. Yes, the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments talked about how God s people could love and honor Him first. Before we can truly love and honor God, we need to be in relationship with Him. Before we go any further, let s ask God to show us what He wants us to learn today. Lead children in a prayer of release to pause, be still, and ask the Holy Spirit to quiet their hearts and minds. God wants and initiates relationship. What does initiate mean? Invite responses. Great thoughts. If you initiate something, you start something. For example, just now, I initiated that game of Charades. God started, or initiated, relationship with His people. He freed them from slavery and brought them to a place where they could worship Him. He loved them and wanted them to have a relationship with Him. Let s take a look at what God said to His people. Have children turn to Exodus 19. Read verse 5 aloud. What s an example of a treasured possession? Invite responses. Show and tell about your own treasured possession. Carry it with you for the rest of storytelling, but play it up by setting it down tenderly while you talk, or cradling it in your arms. A treasured possession is something that is very, very special and valuable. Do you have a treasured possession at home? You probably take really good care of it and protect it. Well, God takes care of and protects His treasured possessions His people. While Moses received the Ten Commandments, the Israelites waited at the bottom of Mount Sinai. Invite the children to show you how they would have waited if they had been the Israelites at the bottom of the mountain. The kids can look excited or sit as still as possible to show being patient. God came down on the mountain in the form of smoke, clouds, and fire (Tech: Cue Volcano Lightning image and Thunder and Lightning sound effect) to meet with Moses and give him the Ten Commandments. When Moses came down from the mountain, he told the people what God had said. Tech: Cue Ten Commandments image. How do you think God s people responded? Invite responses. Good thoughts. Ask a volunteer to read Exodus 24:3 aloud while everyone follows along. God came to His people with the commands, initiating relationship with the people, and they said, Everything the LORD has said we will do (Exodus 24:3). Ask kids to repeat these words; remind them the words are in Exodus 24:3. Then Moses built an altar, and the people worshipped God. Read Exodus 24:4. Invite a few volunteers to build an altar by stacking the pillows or the optional stuffed lunch bag stones. When the Israelites agreed to obey, they agreed to a covenant with God. What s a covenant? Invite responses. Right! It s a very special promise, and when God makes a promise, He keeps it! And when the Israelites agreed to obey God s commandments, God promised to make the Israelites His special people. God initiated relationship with them. Thank the volunteers and ask them to return to their seats. What did we hear in The Big God Story today? Pause for responses. We heard that God cared enough about His people to come close to them, initiate relationship with them, and give them guidelines about how to live as His people. Thousands of years later, God s Son, Jesus, came to earth to be with us. He initiated relationship with us and made it possible for us to be with Him forever! Tell a personal story about a time God initiated relationship with you. When we enter into relationship with God the Father by trusting and obeying His Son, Jesus, the Holy

Spirit lives in us and through us. The Holy Spirit leads us to live in relationship with Him, just like He led the Israelites to live in relationship with Him so many years ago. SMALL GROUP Children reflect on what the Holy Spirit is teaching them and respond through creative activities and games. Reflect: God Initiates Relationship Encourage the kids to open their Bibles and read the suggested passages. Questions for Younger Kids What does the word initiate mean? How did God start a relationship with the Israelites? Genesis 12:1 3; Exodus 2:23 3:7 How does it make you feel to know God desires a relationship with you? Have you entered into relationship with God? If so, tell us about it. Questions for Older Kids What does the word initiate mean? Have you ever initiated (started) anything? Tell us about it. How did God start a relationship with the Israelites? Genesis 12:1 3; Exodus 2:23 3:7 How did God want to use the Israelites as a model to other nations? How did God initiate a relationship with you? Why does God initiate a relationship with people? Have you entered into relationship with God? If so, tell us about it. Children receive a blessing from their leaders and sometimes one another. A blessing may be prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words to encourage and guide. Remember Verse cards (see Resources) Bible Open a Bible and read Philippians 1:9 11: And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God. May you know the peace and joy of real relationship with God.
