3 Skit: The Big Splash Down This is the first big gathering and explanation about how we all got stranded. The idea is to immediately create a challenging situation without it seeming hopeless or scary. You want this experience to be an adventure, not a traumatic event. So do not appear to be alarmed. PILOT Hi. I am, your Pilot. Welcome to Crazy Island. (If you have a co-pilot, introduce him at this time.) We were going to have VBS in Hawaii but we had a problem. We boarded Faith Flight 220 to Honolulu. Everything seemed normal. The flight crew seated us. We buckled in. The plane took off. They served us crackers. Then it happened. I lost control of the plane. I do not know why but it just veered into the ocean. We splashed down with no injuries. Thank you all for using your seat cushion as a floatation device. I am glad you all made it to the island. God was with us to keep us from drowning. We do not yet know where we are or what is on this island. But I am sure we will be fine. We WILL be rescued. The group you are sitting with is now your tribe. As your Pilot I am in charge. I am asking you to do 3 things to make it on this island until we are rescued. 1. Do not feed the animals on the island. 2. Do not try to swim home. It is too far. 3. Most importantly, pay attention to your tribal leader. He/she will help you survive. In addition, I am sending Jo Mac to scout out the island. --THE END-- 3

4 Reggae Praise and Worship WORSHIP LEADER OK, kids, you ready for some reggae? And I m NOT talking about saucy Italian food! Everybody stand up!!! Use the links below to lead the kids in some island-style praise and worship. Some of the songs have words you can project on the screen. They can sing along. 5 Skit: Note in the Bottle (stupid) Jo Mac runs on the stage from the back of the room waving an old bottle in the air. Look what I found! It s a bottle and it has a note inside. He holds up an old bottle. I m trying to get it out of this bottle to read it. Struggles to get the note out but it finally comes out. Jo Mac unrolls it and holds it up to read. Jo Mac reads the note. So you must be STUPID if you got stranded on Crazy Island. Just sayin. lol PILOT Don t think about what this note said about us being stupid. I know we will be rescued so while we are here, let s make the most of our time on this island.. We are NOT stupid. Scripture says Jesus is our wisdom so we cannot be stupid. And because of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us WISDOM from God, (1 Corinthians 1:30 ESV) --THE END-- 5

6 Skit: A Gorilla on the Loose! Pilot and Jo Mac are up front. PILOT I really wish I knew why our plane went down. It is crazy. There was no storm. And there doesn t seem to be anything wrong with the engines. Calvin enters the room looking depressed. What s wrong, Calvin? Don t worry. We WILL get off this island. CALVIN It s not that. Somebody got all my banana pudding. You have banana pudding? CALVIN I did until somebody got it all. That s odd. Who would take your banana pudding? Hurricane Hannah bursts into the room from the back in full panic. HURRICANE HANNAH We got BIG trouble. Look what I just saw. Hannah holds up a picture of a footprint. Did you get Calvin s banana pudding? 6

7 HURRICANE HANNAH What? No! Why would I want Calvin s banana pudding? Look what I found! What is that? HURRICANE HANNAH: What does it look like? It s a footprint of a BIG animal. Let me see that! Not good! Jo Mac carefully looks at the photo. Show the gorilla-footprint.jpg on the screen. HANNAH So what is it? It s a gorilla footprint. And that s not all. Calvin, what did you say was missing? CALVIN All of my banana pudding!!! I hate to tell you this but this is no ordinary gorilla. This is a FULL MOTION GORILLA. Very rare. CALVIN What does that mean? What s a Full Motion Gorilla? That means if he comes around we better do everything he does! Make all the moves he makes! 7

8 HANNAH Why is that? Because he will not leave unless you give him banana pudding or until we follow along with all of his motions. HANNAH Calvin, just give him some of your banana pudding! CALVIN I don t have any more banana pudding. Everybody will be OK. If he comes here just do everything he does and we will all be fine. CALVIN I just don t know. --THE END-- 8

9 Memory Verse Game The point of this verse is that God does NOT need your human efforts to bring you closer to Him. The work Jesus did on the cross was enough. MEMORY VERSE For only crazy people would think they could complete by their own efforts what was begun by God. (Galatians 3:3 MSG) THE DISAPPEARING VERSE 1. One side of the room (Mosquitos) competes with the other side (Jellyfish). 2. Appoint a judge to determine which side is the loudest. 3. Write your memory verse on a dry erase board. 4. Say it together. 5. Erase one word. Say it again. 6. Keep going until the whole verse is erased. 7. Ask the judge to declare which side is the loudest. 8. If too close then call it a tie and award both sides. WHAT YOU NEED Dry Erase Board Marker Eraser 9

10 Play the Louie Video Point to the screen and say, Look what we found! Immediately start the Louie Video () on the big screen. PILOT Wow that Esau sure didn t care much for his big blessing from God. Let s talk more about this in our Tribes. Trudge Through the Sand to the Tribal Meetings Tribal Meetings: here we come! Remind the kids that there are points for orderly transition. 10

12 Welcome 1. Introduce yourself and tell the kids something interesting about you. 2. Greet each kid by name. 3. Give high fives and fist bumps. 4. Make each kid feel wanted. 5. Take a bathroom trip if needed. 6. Seat kids around tables or on the floor in a circle. Name Your Tribe Pick a name for your tribe. It can be anything you want. Pick a back up name in case your name is taken. If two tribes pick the same name, the first one to get it to the Pilot gets to use the name. HERE ARE SOME IDEAS coconuts, pineapples, mangos, dolphins, lobsters, crabs, sharks, pelicans, toucans, starfish, whales, palm trees, sea weed, bamboos, sea shells, blowfish, sting rays, hurricanes, tsunamis, tidal waves, volcanos, baracudas, lizards, bananas, etc. High/Low Game Play the HIGH/LOW game. Very simple. Instruct everyone to hold their thumb up and tell what their HIGH (something good that happened) was last week. Then intruct everyone to hold their thumb down and tell their LOW (something bad that happened). Remember what they say. You might want to pray with them later about anything they share. 12

13 Jacob Bible Story Review Review the Video The Story of Sneaky Jake () Review the Story of Sneaky Jake (Part 1). It is about the life of Jacob in Genesis. This is the story about his birth and how his brother did not care about God s blessing because he wanted something to eat right now. How crazy is that? He was so focused on what he wanted NOW that he did not think about what would come LATER. Tribal Leaders Go Over This With the Kids Before Jacob was born God promised Rebekah (Jacob and Esau s mother) that the youngest twin would be stronger than the older. In other words the younger would be blessed more than the older. That was strange because back then being the oldest in a family was a big deal and it meant you got bigger blessings. (Use the points below to familiarize yourself with the story without reading each point to the kids.) the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger. (Genesis 25:23b ESV) GOD PROMISED JACOB A SPECIAL BLESSING 1. In that day people depended on getting a special blessing from God through their dads. 2. It was a big deal. 3. There was a man named Isaac who had a wife named Rebekah. 13

14 4. Isaac and his wife, Rebekah, had twin boys: Jacob and Esau. 5. Esau was born slightly before Jacob so Esau was older by a little bit. 6. So Esau was supposed to get a big blessing one day. 7. But God said this was a special case and Jacob (who was younger) was going to be more blessed than Esau. ESAU BLOWS OFF HIS BLESSING 1. One day Esau was out hunting. 2. He came home starving. 3. He asked Jacob to fix him some soup. 4. Jacob said he would if Esau gave him his blessing. 5. Esau didn t care about his blessing so he said, Sure. Take it. 6. He just wanted some food. 7. Esau sold his special blessing for a bowl of soup. 8. Jacob gave him some soup. 9. Isaac, their dad, did not know about this. EMPHASIZE MAIN POINT If you trust God you do not need to be sneaky. God always keeps His promises.? DISCUSSION TIME Talk about what happened to Sneaky Jake from the video. Ask these open ended questions. Let the kids talk without correcting them. Make it a safe place for them to express their opinions. You can bring clarity later. Do you think he trusted God? What do you think about Esau giving away his big blessing? Why do you think Esau gave away his big blessing for a pot of soup? Have you ever done something wrong because you wanted something right then? Explain that Esau should have thought more about receiving God s blessing later instead of wanting soup right then. 14

15 Snack Time TODAY S ISLAND SNACK pineapple fruit cup uncrustable green Hawaiian punch Note in the Bottle (stupid) This is a discussion time designed to help kids deal with bullying. Bullying is a HUGE problem in schools. Kids desperately need to talk about what is going on and how other kids are treating them.? Use the Note in the Bottle scene you saw at the Big Beach Gathering to open up discussion. Encourage kids who are being bullied to talk to their parents or teachers about it. Discussion Points What did you think about that note in the bottle? Ask if anybody has ever been called dumb or stupid. Explain that everybody gets called mean names that are not true from time to time. Make it clear you don t agree with it. Just because somebody says you are not smart that does NOT make it true. Explain that hurting people hurt others. Bullies are mean because things aren t right inside of them, not because there is something wrong with you. 15

16 Coconut Roll Memory Verse Game 1. Roll a coconut to one child. 2. Have him say the first word of the verse before rolling the coconut to someone else, who then says the next word, and so on. 3. Continue until you complete the verse. 4. Time how long it takes to finish the verse; and try to beat the previous time. For only crazy people would think they could complete by their own efforts what was begun by God. (Galatians 3:3) Pray Pray about anything the kids want you to pray about with them. Take notes so you can ask about it the next day. Pray like this: Lord thank you that we can trust you. You are good to us and always keep your promises. Thank you. Head to the Big Beach Gathering Select a kid to be ready when the Pilot calls to stand up and announce their tribal name. Lead kids back to the main assembly room. Turn in your points to the Pilot. 16

18 Praise & Worship WORSHIP LEADER Let s get ready to praise our God! Here I Am To Worship Video: Lyric video: Lord, You are Good Video: Tribal Reports Tribal Leaders go on stage with their selected kid to announce their tribal name and report on ONE THING they learned at their tribal meeting. Tribal Leaders may help them with this, especially with the younger kids. Show the Louie Video Note in the Bottle: 18

19 Surprise Gorilla Invasion! Calvin and Hannah walk up front. HANNAH I thought about this and I do NOT believe there is any such thing as a FULL MOTION GORILLA. CALVIN For once I agree with Hannah. It is a little hard to believe. Look what I found! He holds up a sign reading Crazy Island. That must be where we are. CALVIN What s so crazy about this island? Hannah points and screams. Gorilla enters the room and runs up front. Gorilla music Full Motion Gorilla.mp3 starts playing. Gorilla starts dancing. Everybody up. Just watch him and try to do what he does. Gorilla dances for 2-3 minutes then runs off. Great job everybody. I quess we did OK. He s gone now. Calvin faints. Everyone ignores him. HANNAH Wow!!! Can we name him MoGo? Whatever you say, Hannah. --THE END-- 19

20 Tropical Game Time XTREME HULA 1. Ask, Who is GREAT with a hula hoop? 2. Select two kids to come up on the stage. 3. Give them each a hula hoop and a balloon. 4. Instruct them to hula hoop and blow up the balloons AT THE SAME TIME. 5. Explain that if they drop the hula hoop to pick it up and keep going. 6. Players MUST only blow up the balloon while the hula hoop is in motion. 7. Start the music and count GO! 8. Give them ONE MINUTE. See who can blow up their balloon the biggest. 9. Blow the whistle. 10. Compare the balloons and tie off the biggest. 11. Write the winner s name on the balloon. 12. Display it somewhere on the stage for all to see. 13. Choose 2 more kids to see if they can break the record by blowing up a bigger balloon. WHAT YOU NEED 2 hula hoops bag of 12 balloons whistle stop watch 20

21 Will It Float? 1. Place a ten-gallon glass aquarium full of water on the stage. 2. Have an assortment of objects ready to test their floatability. 3. Hold up an object (example: pineapple) and ask: Who thinks this will float? 4. Tribes discuss it and decide on a conclusion. 5. Pilot asks all tribal leaders who think it will float to stand up. 6. Pilot counts how many on each side vote FLOAT. 7. Pilot asks all tribal leaders who think it will sink to stand up. 8. Pilot counts how many on each side vote SINK. 9. Pilot drops object in water. 10. Jo Mac starts the stop watch. It must float for 7 seconds. 11. Jo Mac observes and signals thumbs up for FLOAT or thumbs down for SINK. 12. Repeat with new object as many times as you want. OPTIONAL: Give each tribe on the winning side (Mosquitos or Jellyfish) who voted correctly 25 points. SUGGESTED OBJECTS: banana, sunglasses, twinkie, and roll of duct tape. Tribal Competition Standings Pilot reads out the tribal point standings from last to first. Tribes stand up when their tribe is called. Go Out With A Shout!!! God Always Keeps His Promises! See which side can shout it the loudest. Worth 250 points per tribe on the winning side. Tribal Leaders help parents find their kids. While parents are coming in, pick a kid to come on stage and try The Limbo. Anyone who even TRIES The Limbo gets 50 points for their Tribe. Points are added on the next day. 21
