1 Extended Lesson Plan Overview : The Church Loves and Cares for Other People The Extended Lesson Plan provides four teaching options in addition to the primary program. By using one or more of these options, your program can be extended up to an additional hour. The Bible Story, Game Time, Bible Activity and Weekly Challenge may be done in either large group or small group settings. SEGMENT Bible Story Creatively review the Bible passage featured in the teaching video. The object is to help kids understand and remember what they learned. Game Time Lead your kids in a fun and interactive game that helps them apply the Bible lesson to their lives. Bible Activity Help your kids dig into their Bibles and further apply the lesson to their lives. Each series, kids will have the opportunity to learn Bible study techniques, using that week s Bible passage as text. Episode 1 - Research the verses - Review key words of the verses Episode 3 - Read related verses Episode 4 - Relate verses to life Episode 5 - Remember verses by heart Weekly Challenge The Weekly Challenge is an at-home activity kids use to further apply what they learned to their lives. Have them complete one of the included activities at home, and bring back the results the following week. LENGTH 5-15 minutes minutes minutes 5-10 minutes 1

2 BIBLE STORY (5-15 minutes) In this segment, creatively review the Bible story featured in the teaching video. The object is to help kids understand and remember what they learned. When reading the verses, paint a picture for your viewers. Have fun and explore your creativity. These ideas may help make your storytelling more memorable: Use Bible verse cards to help the kids recall the passage (Bible verse master on the following page) Ask the kids to concentrate on the order of the verses Read the verses aloud Display the 6 verse cards and ask the kids to place them in order as fast as they can If the order is incorrect, ask the kids to rearrange the verses Continue until they have the correct order Read the verses together off of the cards Mark 12:28-33 One of the teachers of religious law was standing there listening to the debate. He realized that Jesus had answered well, so he asked, Of all the commandments, which is the most important? Jesus replied, The most important commandment is this: Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. The second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these. The teacher of religious law replied, Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth by saying that there is only one God and no other. And I know it is important to love Him with all my heart and all my understanding and all my strength, and to love my neighbor as myself. This is more important than to offer all of the burnt offerings and sacrifices required in the law. 2

3 EXTENDED LESSON PLAN: ZuCamp One of the teachers of religious law was standing there listening to the debate. 4 SUPPLIES: 1. Large Balloons (1+ per kid) 2. Markers to write on blown up balloons (1 per kid) 3. Game Prizes (optional) HOW TO START: GAME TIME (10-20 minutes) In this segment, lead your kids in a fun and interactive game that helps them apply the Bible lesson to their lives. Ask kids to sit on the floor or at a table Hand out 1 large balloon and 1 marker to each kid HOW TO PLAY: Hands and Feet Say, This game is called Hands and Feet. This game will remind you to use your hands and feet to love God and to share God s love with others. Ask each kid to blow up his/her balloon Ask each kid to write on his/her balloon ways to show love to God and to other people Ask kids to share what they have written Ask kids to stand up holding their balloons Say HANDS and the kids will each begin to continuously tap their own balloons into the air using their hands When you say FEET the kids will begin to use their feet only to continuously tap their balloons into the air When you say HANDS AND FEET the kids will use both their hands and feet When you say FREEZE the kids catch their balloons and freeze Alternate between HANDS, FEET, HANDS AND FEET and FREEZE, speeding up the time in between directions as you continue See who can keep their balloons in the air the longest while following the directions Remind the kids throughout the game You can use your hands and feet to love God and to love others. PLAY OPTIONS: Invite volunteers to become the Caller for the game Ask kids to find a partner and have the partners play together to keep their 2 balloons up in the air as they follow the instructions Hand out game prizes to all players 4

5 SUPPLIES: BIBLE ACTIVITY (10-20 minutes) In this segment, help your kids dig into their Bibles and further apply the lesson to their lives by completing the Bible Activity listed below. 1. Student Bible Activity Sheets (1 per kid separate PDF found on CD-Rom) 2. Pencils (1 per kid) REVIEW Key Words Ask the kids to circle each of the words and phrases that talk about the word COMMANDMENTS Ask the kids to make a list of the phrases that are circled Discuss what the word commandment means Read the 10 commandments together (Exodus 20:1-17) Discuss God s commandments and why they are important Discuss how loving God and loving others automatically includes all of the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament HOW TO LEAD: Hand out the Student Bible Activity Sheets and pencils Read Mark 12:28-33 together Say, It s important to study the Bible carefully so that you can understand more about God and His plan for your life. One way you can study the Bible is by reviewing key words and phrases. Today we are going to look for key words and phrases that talk about COMMANDMENTS. 5

6 WEEKLY CHALLENGE (5 to 10 minutes) The Weekly Challenge is an at-home activity kids use to further apply what they learned to their lives. HOW TO LEAD: Have them complete one of the activities at home, and bring back the results the following week. Collect the activities from the preceding week and engage in some follow up discussion on what they learned. Challenge Activities Encourage the kids to take their balloons home with them to share with their families and to play the Hands and Feet Game. Encourage the kids to read their Bibles 10 minutes a day this week as they focus on loving God with their hearts, souls, minds, and strength. The following passages will help them learn more about loving God and others: Deuteronomy 6:4-6, 1 John 2:4-6, John 15:9-13, James 2: Encourage the kids to use their hands and feet to show love to a specific person in their lives this week. 6
