3 O mankind! reverence your Guardian-Lord, Who created you from a single person, created, of like nature, His zaowja (wife/mate)... (An-Nisaa 4:1) It is He Who created you from a single person, and made his mate of like nature, in order that he might dwell with her in love. (Al-A`raf 7:189) He began the creation of Man from clay, and made his progeny from a quintessence of fluid (As-Sajdah 32:7-8) According to the following hadith by Abu Hurairah (RA) Adam s mate came from his rib. Treat women kindly. Woman has been created from a rib and the most curved part of the rib is the uppermost. If you try to straighten it, you will break it and if you leave it alone, it will remain curved. So treat women kindly (Saheeth Al-Bukhari Volume 4, Book 55, Number 548) quoting the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Another hadith related from Ibn Abbas and Ibn Mas ud add more detail. When God sent Iblis out of the Garden and placed Adam in it, he dwelt in it alone and had no one to socialize with. God sent sleep on him and then He took a rib from his left side and placed flesh in its place and created Hawwa' from it. When he awoke he found a woman seated near his head. He asked her, "Who are you?" She answered, "Woman." He said, "Why were you created?" She said, "That you might find rest in me." The angels said, "What is her name?" and he said, "Hawwa' " They said, "Why was she called Hawwa'?" He said, "Because she was created from a living thing. (Hadith quoted in Jane Smith and Yvonne Y. Haddad, "Eve: Islamic Image of Woman," Women's Studies International Forum 5 no. 2 (1982): ) Allah stated in the Qur an, And if thou art in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto thee, then question those who read the Scripture (that was) before thee (Qur an 10:94). Obeying the call of Allah we find that the Bible Torah in Genesis 2:21-23 acknowledges the same truth. 3

Genesis 2:23 The rib may actually represent Adam s side, which is also a better translation of the Hebrew text. The rib is symbolic of the husband s duty to treat his wife as part of himself, as well as the wife s dependence on the husband for care and protection as she stands by his side. Though the name of Adam s wife is not provided in the Qur an, it is mentioned in Genesis 3:20 where Adam names her Eve as the mother of all living. Eve is Hawa in Arabic; it comes from the root word hay, meaning living. Eve is also an English variant of the old Hebrew word Havva. Adam informed the Angels that Eve was so named because she was made from a part of him and he, Adam, was a living being. Whether Hawa came from Adam s rib or not, it is clear that all humankind came from a single person, a single source, one being (nafsin wahidatin), Adam. Thus even Hawa finds her source in Adam, the first man. And God said: O Mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam) and from Him (Adam) He created his wife (Hawa), and from them both He created many men and women. (Quran 4:1) Hawa, then, was the only woman ever to be brought forth from a man. She was a unique creation of Allah. 4

5 And coming from Adam she was guaranteed to have the very same human nature, of like nature, as Adam. She was 100% human. In this Allah assured the equality of man and woman. Likewise, Adam was the only man not brought forth from a woman. The apostle Paul recognized this in 1 Cor 11:3 and 8. The head of the woman is the man Man is not of the woman, but the woman is of the man. The Man (Adam) The Woman (Hawa) The man in this verse can only be Adam; and the woman here can only be Hawa. The word head is used here to mean the source, as in the head waters of a river. Paul continues in verse 3, and the head of Christ (Isa al-mesiya) is God. Allah is the source of Isa because He sent him with a Spirit from Himself. (sura 19.17) Allah (God) Isa (Christ) As Adam was created without the participation of a man or a woman, and Hawa was taken out of Adam without participation of another woman, so Isa was later brought forth from Maryim without participation of a man, and originally brought forth from his head, his source, his Father without participation of a woman. Thus Isa was never brought forth at any time by the sexual union of man or woman. Wonderful Originator of the heavens and the earth! How could He have a son when He has no consort [6.101] Surely the likeness of Isa is with Allah as the likeness of Adam [3.59] The likeness or image of Isa is with Allah. So also Isa (Jesus) in the Injeel is said to be the image of God. 5

6 Christ who is the image of God [2Corinthians 4:4] the image of the invisible God [Colossians 1:15] being in the express image of his person [Hebrews 1:3] Al-Bukhaari (6227) narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (PBUH) said: Allah created Adam in His image. This is similar to the Torah reading in Genesis 1:26, 27 concerning the creation of mankind. And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 6

7 While Adam created in the image of Allah suggests that Adam also had a face, hands and feet, could hear and speak; the inclusion of both male and female as reflecting the image and likeness indicates that this first pair paralleled another pair. Father (Allah) and Son (Isa) Man (Adam) and Woman (Hawa) Throughout the Qu ran it can be read, We created you, then We fashioned you, then We said to the angels: Make obeisance to Adam [7.11] We delivered you from Firou s people [2.49] We parted the sea for you [2.50] We pardoned you [2.52] We gave Musa the book [2.53] We raised you [Musa] up after your death [2.56] We said, Strike the rock with your staff [2.60] We made a covenant with the children of Israel: You shall not serve any but Allah... [2.83] We gave Isa, the son of Maryim, strong arguments and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. [2.87] Who is the We that speaks so prominently in the Qu ran? Allah and His Word. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God John 1:1. Truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ 1John 1:3. The Bible and the Qur an both teach that the one and only God of Scripture is the Father, not a mysterious three-person being. There is one God, the Father, of whom are all things 1Corinthians 8:6. He is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ 2Cor 11:31; Eph 1:3; 4:6; 1Peter 1:3. Jesus said, the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship him. John 4:23. When Jesus prayed to his Father, he said, This is life eternal that they might know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent. John 17:3. Isa is Allah s apostle, sent to this world as the Word to be made flesh, human. John 1:14. 7

8 your God is one God! there is no god but He. [Qur an 2.163] The Torah uses the same language. The Lord your God is one Lord. Deuteronomy 6:4. Allah is He besides Whom there is no god, the Everliving, the Self-subsisting by Whom all subsist; slumber does not overtake Him nor sleep; whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is His. [Qur an 2.255] Again the Hebrew Scriptures say the same. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Psalm 121:2,3 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. Isaiah 40:28 the truth; the Messiah, Isa son of Marium is only an apostle of Allah and His Word which He communicated to Marium and a spirit from Him; [Qur an 4.171] He said: Surely I am a servant of Allah; He has given me the Book and made me a prophet; [Qur an 19.30] And surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, therefore serve Him [Qur an 19.36] Isa said the same in the Gospel (Injil), I ascend to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. John 20:17 Isa spoke in Aramaic, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which in Arabic is very similar, Elahi, Elahi, lemaza taraktani? and means My Allah, My Allah, why have you forsaken me? My God, Elahi. The apostle Paul said that Isa s Father was the God of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:17 The Shahadah, Islam s first pillar and the Torah s Shema, the first commandment given to Musa (Moses) are the same. He is God, the One and Only; the Eternal, Absolute. [112:1,2] Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Deut 6:4 Isa confirmed this: The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord. Mark 12:29 8

Behold! The angels said: O Mary! God giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name shall be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary. The Qur an acknowledges the preexistence of Isa, saying that Jesus was God s Word sent to Mary. But it also warns us as does the Bible to not deify the Son to the point where his Father is no longer the only true God; and to not dehumanize Jesus so that he is no longer our example in overcoming sin. To him that overcometh, Jesus said, I will grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. Rev 3:21. And how did he overcome? The Father that dwelleth in me, He doeth the works John 14:10. 9

10 Adam and Hawa were made in the image of Allah and Isa. Surely the likeness of Isa is with Allah as the likeness of Adam [3.59] And the likeness of Hawa is with Adam as the likeness of Isa is with Allah. Hawwa and Adam were created from the same matter. So also, Isa also said, I came out from Allah, I came forth from the Father John 16:27,28. He has the same nature and has by inheritance received a better name than the angels (Heb 1:4). Being in the form of Allah Philippians 2:6, he is equal with his Father (John 5:18), having all the fulness of the divinity in him bodily Colossians 2:9. And as Adam (pbuh) was created before Hawwa, so also Isa proceeded forth from Allah (John 8:42) and is younger (lesser age) than his Father who is older (greater age). Isa said, My Father is greater than I John 14:28. The Father sent His Son into the world (1John 4:9,15; Galatians 4:4) and is thus greater than His Son (John 13:16). In the end, the Son will also himself be subject unto the Father, that Allah may be all in all. 1Corinthians 15: Thus we serve the living and true God and wait for His Son from heaven, even Isa the Anointed One. 1Thessalonians 1:9,10. 10
