3 FROM OUR SENIOR RABBI GROWING IN OUR PAIN I have a mantra that pain should never be in vain. Every human being has experienced physical and emotional pain at one point or another in his or her life it is the definition of being human. The question for us to always consider is, What do we do with our pain? I think of the parent who has lost a child no explanations in the world will help to balm the wound created by that loss. On the other hand, allowing that pain to motivate a person do good, to transform the energy of pain into the energy of power for blessing, is a remarkable feat. My teacher, Rabbi Sheldon Marder, told the following in a High Holy Day sermon: Listen to the story of a young man named Jerry Long, as told by psychiatrist Viktor Frankl. A newspaper account tells us that Jerry Long has been paralyzed from his neck down since a driving accident which rendered him a quadriplegic three years ago. He was 17 when the accident occurred. Today Long can use a stick in his mouth to type. He attends two courses at Community College via a special telephone. The intercom allows Long to both hear and participate in class discussions. He also occupies his time by reading, watching television and writing. (Texarkana Gazette). And Jerry Long wrote the following words in a letter to Viktor Frankl: I view my life as being abundant with meaning and purpose. The attitude that I adopted on that fateful day has become my personal credo for life: I broke my neck, it didn t break me. I am currently enrolled in my first psychology course in college. I believe that my handicap will only enhance my ability to help others. I know that without the suffering, the growth that I have achieved would have been impossible. (Man s Search for Meaning, p. 148). I broke my neck, it didn t break me. Words of defiance. Words of hope. Words of a human being with something to live for. Viktor Frankl was different from the early psychiatrists, like Freud and Adler, who came before him. Everything he needed to know about life he learned as an inmate in Auschwitz. There, in the midst of the worst suffering on earth, Frankl discovered that people were more likely to survive if they had something to live for, if they could just find something that gave their life meaning. Frankl himself managed to do exactly that nurturing his personal project, holding it deep within himself, throughout his years in the camps. And he reasoned that, if he could find meaning for his life in that place of utter despair, then a human being can find meaning in any circumstances. Frankl s legacy to us is captured in one simple sentence so simple, and so important, that I urge you to memorize it: A person is not destroyed by suffering, he is destroyed by suffering without meaning. Writes Frankl: There are three main avenues on which one arrives at meaning in life. The first is by creating a work or by doing a deed. The second is by experiencing something or encountering someone; in other words, meaning can be found not only in work but also in love. But, most important, says Frankl, is the third avenue to meaning in life: even the helpless victim of a hopeless situation, facing a fate he cannot change, may rise above himself, may grow beyond himself, and by so doing change himself. He may turn a personal tragedy into a triumph. (Man s Search for Meaning, pp ). [ Rabbi Richard Steinberg The Rona Perley Memorial Senior Rabbinic Chair Dr. Frankl believed very deeply that each person is created with the ability to make meaning (it is one of the four Ms of our Temple s mission Making Meaning). As we traverse through life we will face many mountains we need to climb. We will walk in the valley of shadows. The Jewish way is to make meaning from those journeys so that our pain is never in vain. EAT, PRAY, L CHAIM Nobody Goes to Services Alone at SHM! 5 FROM OUR RABBI & DIRECTOR OF LIFELONG LEARNING HaYom shtem esrei yom la omer. Today is the 12th day of the Omer, which is one week and five days of the Omer. That is how I began a eulogy that I delivered not for a member of our congregation, but for a member of my family. My aunt, Shelly Hoberman, was buried on the twelfth day of the Omer, May 5th, She died just a couple of days before that, after a fierce battle with a fierce disease called Alzheimer s. The Omer is the period of time between the second day of Passover and the festival of Shavuot, when Jewish tradition asks us to quite literally count the days. We count the days and the weeks between the holidays, symbolically recounting our people s journey from the Exodus from Egypt (commemorated during Passover) to the gift, responsibility, and freedom of Torah, which tradition teaches was given at Mount Sinai (celebrated during Shavuot). In 2016 and every year, we recount the journey from the beginning of freedom to the beginning of responsibility. In many ways, as a people of faith, this journey is a source of comfort since there is, I believe, a natural tendency in our world and within each of us, to incline away from all those things that constrain us and towards a freedom that is understood as a sense of fulfillment, an ability to shoulder responsibility for a greater good, and a life filled with meaning. Moving towards a freedom of this sort is the way life is supposed to happen. With each passing day, as Jews who are taught to recognize our blessings, we count every step on the journey towards the blessing of freedom. My aunt may not have known she was doing it, but she taught my family in a most personal way what the calendar tries to teach us as a people. She made every day count. Her life was not always the easiest, but it was good. She appreciated it. And she lived it the way she wanted to, finding fulfillment and meaning freedom, if you will in the choices she made. That is, until these final years when Alzheimer s disease enslaved her mind and eventually her body. The journey of people who live with Alzheimer s disease goes in reverse, away from life lived with intention, back towards their own personal Egypts. Backwards. Cruel. Pharaoh. No family is unaffected by this disease. Currently, it is estimated that there are 5.3 million Americans living with Alzheimer s. Recent reports by the CDC claim that by the year 2050, up to 16 million will be affected. This is an epidemic. Today, there is no cure. In the spirit of the human tendency to incline towards freedom, though, we cannot give up hope that a cure can exist tomorrow, or the next day. During my last visit with my aunt, I was mindful that her mind and body had been overtaken by her disease. Today, I am mindful that for those of us who continue down the road to freedom, Shavuot and, thus, a symbolic Sinai lies ahead. At Sinai we receive Torah and in doing so, we come face to face with our responsibility to do our part to bring others to freedom. It is my prayer that those who are able to take hold of the responsibility to support efforts to cure this cruel disease, to show love to those in our families, synagogue community and broader community who suffer, and to care for their caretakers, will do so. Counting the Omer, let us be inspired to lean toward freedom for each individual mind and soul and to make every day count. t Rabbi Leah Lewis Rabbi & Director of Lifelong Learning The Jaffe Family Rabbinic Chair Shir Ha-Ma alot adopted this new High Holy Day Machzor last year order your s today $42.00 per set until July 30th (Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur books) $56.00 per set after 7/30/16 The New Machzor of the Reform Movement Inspiration, Tradition, Innovation A few of the Machzor s Special Features: Expanded options for Torah Readings Study texts that provide background and context New transliterations that capture the beauty of the Hebrew A LIFETIME OF BELONGING JUNE

6 FROM OUR CO-PRESIDENTS SUMMER AT SHM, THE START OF SOMETHING SPECIAL BY RACHEL HARMAN-FRIEDMAN It is unbelievable to me that summer is almost here. It seems like just yesterday I was writing my article about the start of the school year and all the excitement to look forward to in this year. Amazingly, the older I get, and the older my kids get, the faster the year seems to fly by. At SHM, we have spent the school year very busy planning for our building project which is to begin in the fall. We hope you all had a chance to read last month s Ma alot, which was filled with updates about the building project and plans for our accommodations for the coming year. Meanwhile, while all this planning has been going on, synagogue life has continued to be filled with stimulating, active programing for kids and adults alike. While school for our kids comes to an end, summer programing continues. We hope you will all take this chance to stay engaged and find summer events to join in with our community. We will kick off summer with the Cantor s concert on June 4 an annual event which helps to support our wonderful Friday Night Live program. This year promises to be as fabulous as ever with the theme of Father & Son Still Rockin. Cantor Shikler and his son, Gidon Shikler, along with special guest Duvid Swirsky, will entertain us with music and song. Summer services will be a great way to join in our SHM community with fun Tot Shabbats, the annual Beach Shabbat, and of course services with the joyful sounds of our choir and temple musicians. Looking forward to the coming year, in the midst of all the planning and building, the plan is a year filled with stimulating, educational, and engaging programs. The theme for next year is: The Blessing of Religion: Celebrating Faith. We will take this opportunity to engage in conversation and learning about different faiths.over the course of the year we will have many stimulating speakers to engage us in discussions of various religions such as Catholicism, Mormonism, Buddhism, Islam, as well as different sects of Judaism. For those of us who enjoyed our study of Mussar this year, there will be opportunity to continue on in this study. If you did not have the opportunity to engage in one of the Mussar study groups this year, there will be opportunity to begin this study in the coming year. I have personally found the course of study of these character traits to be stimulating, thoughtful, and a wonderful opportunity to get to know members of my study group on a more intimate level. As we vacate our current building after Yom Kippur, we will look forward to coming together again in a new and inviting home. In the meantime, it is our priority to make sure we all stay connected as a congregational family. This large family is made up of smaller communities and we hope to be able to strengthen these relationships with opportunities for Shabbat dinners, study groups, family programs, and holidays in homes, parks and community centers. If you build a Sukkah at your home or host a Passover Seder, we hope you will invite our SHM families to join you. If you have always wanted to do these things, reach out, let us know, we are happy to help! We are thankful to have the Mormon Center in Irvine available to us to use for Shabbat services, Torah Study and our large congregational events. Beth Carroll & Rachel Harman-Friedman Temple Co-Presidents Nashim events, brotherhood events and youth group events will all continue throughout the year with off-site planning while we are out of the building, Our Religious school program has been a success this year in uniting our kids into a single session. We are bursting at the seams with all of our kids under one roof at the same time, and counting the days until we have more space for them to sing, dance and learn together. The school planning for the year is in progress. We are working to confirm a gathering place for Sunday school and will continue to enjoy off-site family camps throughout the coming year. Keep your eye out this summer for the program book, filled with ways to get involved and ways to engage and connect with our SHM family. We hope to see you at summer events and will continue to keep you apprised of the building progress. 6 JUNE 2016 MEMORY MITZVAH MENTSCH MAKING MAKING MEANING
