NAVI NOTES RAVH NAVI TEST 2 YHS Review.com Why is she going to give him up if she is so desperate? She is selfless/sacrificial; she wants a kid for Klal Yisrael a. Her Tefillah is communal Isn t this being arrogant? 1. Midrash Shmuel- The Bat Kol said that a kid named Shmuel will be a Tzadik, so everyone named their kid Shmuel, so she isn t arrogant 2. Emet L Yaakov- She had high hopes for her bid that he would be great Why does it say Hashem Tzvakot? 1. Rashi- Tachtonim (they have kids/they die) vs. Elyonim (they don t have kids/they don t die). Chana wants to know which one she is from 2. Rashi- She is begging for kids, and says Hashem is the Master of Legions Why the double Lashon- Ra oh Tir eh? Radak- Tir eh = I will seclude myself with another man and be accused of Sotah and then you will have to give me a kid; Ra oh = If it is good, than give me a child Al Hashem Gemara Brachot- Al Hashem means to throw words (she argues against Hashem) Vemorah Lo Ya aleh Al Rosho- Was he a nazir? 1. Rabbi Nehira- He was a nazir- the word Morah was used with Shimshon and Shmuel 2. Rabbi Yossi- Morah = fear fear will not be upon his head, he won t be scared of anyone except for Hashem Why does the Navi repeat the word Amatecha 3 times? Mahari K ra- She kept all 3 Mitzvot specifically given to women: a. Chalah b. Nidah Chatam Sofer- Each one has a relation to childbirth c. Hadlakat Nerot Chana did not only keep the Mitzvot, but it was also her What is Shomer Et Piha? 1. Rashi- He was waiting for her to finish what she was doing 2. Radak- He was trying to figure out what she was doing (intensively watching her lips) 3. Metzudat David- He was lip-reading Hirbatah Lehitpallel - How do we understand long Tefillah? Radak- By the fact that she davened for so long, it shows that: Page 1

a. Shmuel s life was shortened b. Anyone who elongates their davening will be answered 1. More concentration/focus What is the problem with a long Tefillah? 1. Radak- Lip service is pure loss; it is meaningless a. Less is more b. Less, you can be concise 2. Mussar Nevi im- The more you lengthen your Tefillah, it looks as if Hashem does not have Rachamim- b/c you need to ask over and over again Medaberet Al Liba (speaking on her heart) - What does this mean? 1. Radak- A lot of Kavanah- she davened with all her heart 2. Gemara Brachot- she is enveloped in heart- give me one child so I can nurse; so I can use my body in a proper way 3. Mussar Nevi im- I have untapped inner emotions (spiritual level) Why did Eli think she was drunk? 1. Gra- Eli looked at the Urim Vetumim and saw the letters: Hey, Shin, Kaf, Reish; he though it said Shikorah but really it should have read K shera [Side Point/Suggestion- She was barren like Sarah- K sarah] 2. Malbim- Her lips were moving but there was no sound to be heard a. Long Tefillah- presenting a long list of defenses to an intermediary (done during the generation) b. Quiet Tefillah- goes directly to Hashem b/c Hashem knows your heart, s you don t need to speak out your Tefillah Chana combined the two- long, but quiet Tefillah 3. Mishbetzot Zahav- Nichnas Yayin Yotzeh Sod - drinking brings out your inner self. Eli noticed that her davening was so intense that it was like a drunk person (b/c she was pouring out herself) 4 Halachot we learn from Chana s Tefillah: Gemara Brachot- 1. Can t daven when you drunk- Vayachshev Eli Leshikorah 2. Move your lips- Rak S fateha Na ot 3. Don t speak out loud (no one else should hear you)- Vekolah Lo Yishama 4. Have a lot of Kavanah- Medaberet Al Liba Lechi Leshalom - How can Eli guarantee her that her Tefillah will be answered? 1. Ralbag- Through Nevuah; Through Tefillah- he will daven for her 2. Gemara Brachot- If you suspect someone falsely, you need to appease them you need to give them a Bracha Why is she happy? Page 2

1. She has a Bracha/Nevuah in his davening 2. Radak- It says Ledarkah - she was a Nidah Why is he named Shmuel? Ki Mehashem She iltiv - Shaul Mehashem Why doesn t Chana go to Shiloh with Elkanah? 1. Radak- Chana is waiting to finish nursing him (24 months) b/c he is still young and weak 2. Ralbag- B/c once she brought him to Shiloh, he would be there forever Vehana ar Na ar- Why the double language? 1. Radaka. He is still so young, but nonetheless she brings him b. He is sharp- he can differentiate between good and bad 2. Mahari Kra- He was still so young to serve Eli- but she brought him to keep her promise What is the connection between the 2 parts in Pasuk 25? 1. Gemara Brachot- They were waiting for a Kohen to shect the animal, and Shmuel asked - why do you need a Kohen, where does it say so? Eli says Shmuel is correct but the problem is that he just contradicted his Rebbe. Chana s asks Eli forgiveness not to kill Shmuel How do we see Shmuel as a product of his mother? 1. Shlomo Carlebach- When a parent davens for a specific child, the child has a sense of self (sense of who he is) 2. Mishbetzot Zahav a. Shmuel never entered Gan Eden, but rather he stands outside and davens for Bnei Yisrael b. He turned down his seat in Gan Eden until the Beit Hamikdash is rebuilt Perek Bet 7 Nevi im Sarah Miriam Devorah Chana Avigail Chuldah Esther Chana s Tefillah Oz Melech- Perek Aleph Request Man s Significance- b/c man can stand before Hashem and make requests/demands (Chana confronts Hashem in order to change her status quo) Perek Bet Praise Man s Insignificance- everything comes from Hashem; Chana doesn t mention herself at all in her Tefillah Page 3

What is Chana referring to in her Tefillah? 1. Maharsha (Pasuk Vav) - Korach thought he would be a leader when he saw a child who will be a leader (Shmuel). What he didn t realize is that Shmuel was born b/c Korach s children did Teshuva- she says Korach s downfall is somewhat my fault b/c since he saw Shmuel he kept going with his argument. 2. Mishbetzot Zahav (Pasuk Tet) - Yosef is known as the Tzadik, Potifar is known as the Rasha. Not only Yosef, but anyone who is a Chasid What was the sin of Bnei Eli? 1. They took too much meat; They took it before it was cooked 2. Rashi- They made their own rules. It was no longer Mishpat Hashem rather Mishpat Kohanim 3. Ralbag- They chased after their own desires and over used their power and took too much 4. Malbim- They caused the woman and men who were bringing a Korban to sleep over b/c Bnei Eli did not take their Korbanot yet Context Rishonim 1. Malbim (Pasuk Yud Bet) - Long Tefillah- presenting a long list of defenses to an intermediary. Quiet Tefillah- goes directly to Hashem b/c Hashem knows yours heart so you don t need to speak out your Tefillah. Chana combined the two- long, but quiet Tefillah. [Answers the question of- Why did Eli think that she was drunk?] 2. Rashi (Pasuk Yud Bet- Shomer Et Piha) - Eli was waiting for her to finish. [Answers the question of- What is Shomer Et Piha?] 3. Radak (Pasuk Yud Bet- Shomer Et Piha) - Eli was trying to figure out what she was doing- he was intensely watching her lips, b/c her lips were moving but no sound was coming out, therefore he thought she was drunk. [Answers the question of- What is Shomer Et Piha?] 4. Ralbag (Pasuk Yud Gimmel) - Eli saw through Nevuah that her Tefillah will be heard; or through his Tefillah, Eli will pray for it from Hashem. [Answers the question of- How can Eli guarantee that her Tefillah will be answered?] 5. Radak (Pasuk Kaf Bet- Ad Yigmol) - She needed to finish nursing him for 24 months, even though she had to bring him, and she saw that he was still young and weak. [Answers the question of- Why doesn t Chana go to Shiloh with Elkanah?] 6. Ralbag (Perek Bet- Pasuk Yud Bet) - Bnei Eli were bad people, they chased after their own desires, and went after the people bringing the Korbanot and took more than they were supposed to for themselves. [Answers the question of- What was the sin of Bnei Eli?] Page 4

7. Chatam Sofer - Chalah, Nidah, and Hadlakat Nerot have to do with childbirth. Man is like the dough of the Chalah, b/c you shape the dough and man is shaped from the dust of the earth. The blood of a person is the blood of Nidah (of the soul). the G-dly soul inside a person is like the candle of Shabbat. That is why women daven for their children when they light Shabbat candles b/c it represents their souls. [Answers the question of- Why does it repeat Amatecha 3 times?] 8. Mishbetzot Zahav (Pasuk Yud Gimmel- Nichnas Yayin Yotzeh Sod) - When one is drunk, he pours out his inner self/his secrets. So, Eli thought that she was drunken b/c she was pouring out her heart in front of Hashem. [Answers the question of- Why did Eli think she was drunk?] 9. Gemara Brachot (Lechi Leshalom) - Eli answers her and says go in peace, from here we learn that if you suspect your friend in a matter that you shouldn t suspect him of, you need to appease him and give him a Bracha. [Answers the question of- How can Eli guarantee her that her Tefillah will be answered?] These notes are not to be used to replace conventional studying. Some material may have been left out.
