Tht is over 32 percent of the clss. Two of the students were Ntionl Merit Winners, 7 were Semi-Finlists in the competition, while 18 received letters of Commendtion. We re very proud of this grduting clss nd 18 Letters of Commendtion which hs excelled not lone in cdemic work nd inter-scholstic competition of ll sorts, but lso in menschlichkeit. As group, they conduct themselves with dignity, refinement nd sense of commitment to their fellow humn beings tht is truly remrkble. They represent, on the whole, much of wht Rmz eduction is ll bout. In ddition, they hve been dmitted to some of the finest colleges in the country in lrge numbers. Among the schools which our grdutes will be ttending re the following: Brnrd, Br-Iln, Brndeis, Brown, Columbi, Cornell, CUNY, Drtmouth, Duke, Goucher, Hrvrd, Johns Hopkins, MIT, NYU, Princeton, Stern, SUNY, Tufts, University of Michign, University of Pennsylvni, Wshington University, Willims College, Yle nd Yeshiv, mong others.

2 Pge Two REPRINTED FROM THE JEWISH WEEK THE SADDEST SHIP AFLOAT: A HALF-CENTURY LATER By HASKEL LOOKSTEIN On My 13,1939, the St. Louis, luxurious cruiseship of the Hmburg-Americ Line, set sil from Hmburg, bound for Hvn. On bord were 907 Germn Jews, fleeing from Nzi Germny, who held lnding certifictes entitling them to enter Cub. These certifictes, purchsed for $150 to $300, were not honored by the Cubn government to the constern tion nd horror of the St. Louis pssengers. The ship remined in the port of Hvn from My 27 until June 2, fter which it ws forced to deprt. The ship siled slowly up nd down the Florid cost while negotitions were con ducted with Cub by Lwrence Berenson of the Joint Distribution Committee. The distress of the pssengers ws front pge news in The New York Times on June 2, 5, 6, 7 nd 8. On three occsions the Times editorilized bout "The Sddest Ship Aflot Tody," lden with her "crgo of despir," cruising off the cost of Mimi whose shimmering towers were "only the embttlements of nother forbidden city." These unfortuntes, who were rejected by everyone, wrote The Times, will be welcom ed home by "Germny, with ll the hospitli ty of its concentrtion cmps." OnJune9, TheTimeseditorilized: "Wecn only hope tht some herts will soften somewhere nd some refuge be found. The cruise of the St. Louis cries high to heven of mn's inhumnity to mn." Despite its compssionte editoril, The Times filed to sk why the St. Louis refugees were not offered sylum in the United Sttes. It remined for Jmes Cnnon Jr., Episcopl bishop of Richmond, V., to rise tht ques tion in letter to the Richmond Times- Disptch: "Why did not the President, Secretry of Stte, Secretry of the Tresury, Secretry of Lbor nd other officils...r rnge for the lnding of these refugees who hd been cught in this melstrom of distress nd gony through no fult of their own?" Cnnon's obvious question, which eluded most observers, ws not posed even by Jewish writers. The Yiddish press in New York nd the Anglo-Jewish press ll over the country be moned the plight of the St. Louis pssengers, printed their cries of nguish in the form of telegrms from the St. Louis, told the story s it unfolded dy-by-dy, but they never sked why the pssengers could not be received here in the United Sttes. Fifty yers lter we understnd the resons for Jewish reticence. Anti-Semitism in Americ ws t its height. The Fther Coughlins of tht dy preched htred of Jews over cost-to-cost rdio networks nd struck fer into the herts of Americn Jews. Furthermore, the nti-lien forces in Congress were powerful nd influen til. People like Sentor Reynolds of North Crolin nd Congressmn Rnkin of Mississippi intimidted the Jewish communi ty nd mde Jews ferful of pleding with the U.S. government to open the doors of Americ to these 907 unfortunte people. Americn Jews fered tht were they to sk for this simple humnitrin gesture the forces rryed ginst them in Congress would de mnd tht the doors be shut entirely nd tht ll refugees be brred, looking bck on the double trgedy of refugees without hven nd Americn Jews too frightened to pled for their rescue, Jcob Lestschinsky wrote in the Congress Bulletin on June 16, 1939: "It did not even occur to Jews to ppel to the Americn Government to find wy of sv ing the hpless pssengers of the St. Louis...(We re) showing incresing signs of becoming spiritully nd morlly reconciled to ccept the ghetto nd lmost voluntrily to surrender the positions won by the emncip tion. Our own depression nd demorliztion re immesurbly more dngerous to ourselves thn the blows of our enemies." As the St. Louis stemed slowly bck cross the Atlntic towrd n expected, trgic ln ding in Hmburg, Morris Troper of the Joint Distribution Committee worked feverishly to find hven someplce in the world for these doomed pssengers. Finlly, one dy before the ship ws to rrive in Germny, he suc cessfully negotited with The Netherlnds, Belgium, Frnce nd Englnd to ech tke onequrter of the pssengers. Thus ended wht one observer hs clled "the voyge of the dmned," trgic sg of hopeless victims nd helpless bystnders. In our own dy history hs repeted itself. The story of the St. Louis hs recurred, most recently in the cse of the bot people of South Vietnm nd other benighted lnds of Southest Asi. The lessons of the St. Louis hs not been ignored. The United Sttes nd other countries hve dmitted hundreds of thousnds of these refugees. In remrkble twist of history, Isrel ws the first to open its doors to the bot people. On June 21, 1977, the dy Menchem Begin took office s prime minister, his first officil ct ws to grnt sylum to 66 Vietnmese who hd been picked up by n Isreli freighter nd rejected t severl Fr Estern ports. The dy, by coincidence, ws exctly 38 yers to the dy from tht when the lst of the St. Louis refugees disembrked in Southmpton, Englnd. Hskel Lookstein is rbbi of Congregtion Kehilth Jeshurun nd the principl ofrmz School in New York. The bove rticle is dpted from his book, "Were We Our Brothers' Keepers? 6 KEHILATH JESHURUN Pge Six BULLETIN A TIME TO EMBRACE AND A TIME TO LET GO 10th MEMORIAL TRIBUTE TO RABBI JOSEPH H. LOOKSTEIN by Rbbi Hskel Lookstein On Wednesdy evening, June 29,1979, my memory, begn chpter in unfinished utobiogrphy. He entitled it fther, of blessed his "A Time To Embrce And A Time To Let Go." sd chpter. It spoke of the need to ledership of institutions nd cuses tht he held prticulrly der. The first two pges which he wrote tht night ended with the midrshic portryl of the sons of Aron wlking behind Moses nd Aron nd sying It ws give up ech other: "When Will These Two Old Men..." to My fther never finished tht sentence. He completed the thought. He put his pen down without writing the word "Die." And he never wrote gin. During tht night he suf fered the stroke tht led to his pssing sixteen dys lter. never Tht's bout to s close s one should come scribing to his premonitions or prescience. It is lmost "Rbiyishe" story. But it is true; nd it leves me with one messge in two prts. First, my fther, like other gret Jewish per sonlities, did not die. As his children-physicl nd spiritul - live on, he lives cond, there is on s time to embrce nd well. Se time to let go, but when we let go, we let go only of the person; we continue to embrce the prin child. I m sure he would hve been s devstted s nyone over Aln's ccident, but he would hve given the fmily encourgement nd perhps tht is one of the sources for their extrordinry strength - beginning with Aln himself. He would hve been so proud of his young people tking ledership in the Shul: Fred Bumgrten, whom he would hve cll ed Freddy; nd Gil Khn, nd host of others who re on the bords of the Shul nd the School. Wht Nchs he would hve hd from Mel Newmn s Pst Chirmn of the Rmz Bord, nd Steve Gross nd Dvid Khn nd observnt to be Trustee of this congreg tion. I think tht Trustee of Shul like this ought to be someone t whom people cn look nd sy he represents wht the Shul stnds for." You know, we ccepted this temporry demurrl, but wht this young mn could not know fther would hve considered such response to be n bsolute indiction of how deserving tht young mn ws to be Trustee nmedforhim. He would hve loved tht. He would hve hd sixteen different Yiddish terms of enderment for ech of the gret yers go of the mn - grndchildren, s he hd for the two - Eric nd Lizzy - whom he knew nd loved. My mother continues, thnk God, to be the center of our fmily. We know tht her home is wht it lwys ws: A gthering plce for ll of us. Tht is wht let go. we embrce even s we Second, ll of us try to embrce him s leder of our community. I looked round the Shul t morning services tody nd I sw tht composed of grdutes or prents - nd, in one cse, grndprent - of Rmz students. My fther would hve loved tht. However, he would hve been very upset by the smll number of people t the service nd he would hve let us know in no uncertin terms how upset he ws. two-thirds of the Minyn ws Rmz But he would hve liked nd he would hve pprecited the nture of the Dveners. He would be thrilled to see Benjy s Presi dent of this Shul, Benjy whom he loved s Vice Chirmn Finncil Secretry. It isn't every com munity tht is fortunte enough to hve such continuity. He founded Rmz, in prt, in order to give permnence to this community. He would hve been proud of the fct tht one young mn who ws pproched to serve s trustee responded with the following words: "I don't think I m sufficiently religious is tht my go s Tresurer nd Dvid Sr- n s but we continue to embrce the messge. We let go of the physicl being but we continue to embrce the spiritul essence. Ten yers fter his pssing we might ssess wht it is tht we re trying to embrce. First nd foremost, we try to embrce his qulities s fmily mn. In letter tht he wrote two nd hlf yers before his pssing he urged the fmily to Remin close, s, thnk God, we hve lwys been. He ssured us tht "Whtever occsions you will celebrte together, be sure tht my spirit will be there." In the lmost ten yers since his pssing we hve been blessed by the fct tht every one of us is still here except for n uncle, my fther's sister's husbnd, who pssed wy severl yers go. And t every hppy fmily occ sion nd there hve been mny - we hve felt his spirit. When he died, he nd my mother only hd two gret-grndchildren. Now, thnk God, there re sixteen, more thn one of them ciples. We let s of his Shul. He would hve loved the bby crriges in the downstirs vestibule on Shbbt morning, but he would not hve loved the sounds tht some of the children mke in Shul. He would hve been thrilled with the increse in tten dnce, but upset bout the rising decible level of converstion. We hve to be creful bout these things. He wnted this Shul to be s beutiful nd s estheticlly ppeling s reform temple nd yet s wrm nd s vibrnt s Chssidic Shteibel. We will never rech either extreme but we should never stop striv ing to ttin them. God forbid tht we should end up with the esthetics of Shteibel nd the wrmth nd vibrncy of temple. (And I men no offense to either Shteiblch or temples.) We hve not let go of his vision of Rmz either. As Rv Soloveitchik sid to me few how the enroll told him, thnk God it ws going very well, he responded: "Tht's becuse you hven't chnged." When ment when he sked me of Rmz ws going nd I I sked him wht he ment by tht, he nswered: "You hven't moved to the right; don't let them pull you to the right." Ten yers fter the pssing of Rbbi Joseph H. Lookstein we hve not pulled to the right. We re self-conscious bout our religious gols nd purposeful bout the messge we re try ing to communicte, but we remin Centrist Syngogue nd school, committed to teching Finlly, we re trying to hold fst to nother mjor principle of my fther's life: his Ahvt Yisrel. Mny times during the lst ten yers I would hve given nything just to be ble to sk him wht he thought bout the internecine htred which bounds mong Jews tody. I cn just bout imgine his well chosen words to describe the stone throwers on the hredi right nd the Orthodox bshers on the liberl left; the intolernt nd insensitive religious power brokers in Isrel nd the opportunistic op ponents from liberl Judism in Americ who re trying to seize politicl power in Isrel nd who demnd communl funds for projects nd progrms tht do not even yet exist. My fther would hve disgreed strongly with the Lubvitcher Rebbe in the 'Who is Jew" con troversy in November, but it would not hve diminished in the slightest his love nd dmir tion for the Rebbe. He hd the bility to love nd respect those with whom he did not gree becuse he viewed ll Jews s members of fmily. We hve tried to embrce tht ttitude t time when people re choosing sides nd lining up to hurl insults t ech other. This ttitude is not simply mnifested in words. It hs been trnslted into ction. The ledership role tht our congregtion plyed in opertion Moses ws n exmple of Ahvt Yisrel in prctice. Our ppel this yer for pssge to freedom t the UJA kick-off in Aln nd Elizbeth Doft's home is further exm ple. We hve not lessened our support for the congregtion, for Rmz or for Yeshiv University. On the contrry, our membership is giving more nd more generously to these which re so ner to us. But most of recognize tht our first responsibility is to Kll Yisrel. Tht is wht my fther tught us. He probbly lerned it from my gret cuses us grndfther, Rbbi Moses Z. Mrgolies who tught young Rbbinic rdicl from the Lower Est Side how to pprecite Jewish seculrists, how to promote Mizrchi nd how to develop the ttitude tht every Jew is poten tilly religious. He or she my simply not be there yet. But no one is without neshm. So, lmost ten yers fter his pssing I m not sure exctly wht he would hve thought bout every single ctivity of our community but I think, on the whole, he would hve been plesed. I don't know, for exmple, wht his rection would hve been to Women's Tefillh Group in our chpel, but he probbly would hve been redy to give it chnce, nd if he hd herd his own dughter reding the Torh nd even evesdropped while gretgrnddughter red portion, he just might hve been flexible enough to hve sid: "Nu it hs its vlue." He ws tril blzer for most of his life nd we re following the pths tht he blzed for us. "There is time to embrce nd time to let go." Ten yers go we let go with ters nd - preching menschlichkeit, tolernce, nd derekh eretz towrd ll people. We will strive to be holy but not holier thn thou; righteous but not selfrighteous; observnt of Torh nd Mitzvot but not competitive in the sech for the Churnr grief. Tody, we embrce with love, with respect nd with grtitude. His soul is forever bound up mong the living - mong the liv ing in the Yeshiv Shel M'l where he hs erned his plce nd mong us, the living, in of the month. As n institution nd preserve nd respect for ll Jews s community we embrcing virtully ll of the vlues nd principles which my fther tught us throughout his 56 yers. re the Yeshiv Shel Mt where we honor nd the kind of community tht he lbored so lovingly to crete. Tht is his ultimte rewrd - nd it is ours s well.

7 Pge Seven 117th ANNUAL MEETING GAVEL PASSES FROM BENJAMIN BROWN TO STANLEY GUREWITSCH (continued from pge 1) Mr. Brown then spoke bout the fct tht this will be the third yer in row with the sme dues structure. He told the membership tht this is possible becuse of the extrordinry generosity of KJ members through the Annul Syngogue Appel, which in the coming yer must rise pproximtely $450,000 in order to cover the difference between wht our dues nd norml income brings in nd our expenses entil. Benjy closed with specil tribute to Frn for ll of her support nd encourgement. He thnked his fmily, his fellow Officers, the Rbbis nd the entire membership. He ssured us ll tht "I shll continue to be vilble to KJ in ny cpcity. I m leving the Presidency, but I do not wish to leve n ctive involvement in the congregtion's ffirs. I feel gretly indebted to KJ for helping me to become wht I never thought I would be. I shll try, with God's help, to express tht grtitude by continued commitment to Torh nd mitzvot nd to ll of you in this wonderful congregtion." The semblge gve Benjy stnding ovtion in tribute not lone to his ddress but to his person nd to ll tht he hs ment to the congregtion throughout the pst six yers. Memoril to Rbbi Joseph H. Lookstein Mr. Brown then clled upon Rbbi Hskel Lookstein to deliver the nnul tribute to his fther. During the pst eight yers members of the congregtion hve given this tribute. This yer it ws felt tht following the specil memoril ddresses by Dr. Normn Lmm, Dr. Emnuel Rckmn nd Prof. Elie Wiesel, it would be fitting for Rbbi Hskel Lookstein to deliver specil tribute. The text of tht tribute is printed elsewhere in this Bulletin. Report of Committee of Nomintions The President then clled upon Richrd E. He thnked hem for their service. He lso noted tht hllin Brown Borenstein nd Dr. Bernrd hbkow hve sked to be relieved of the esponsibility of serving s Trustees. Mr. Kobrin then presented the following or three yer terms on the Bord: Hrvey \rf, Dr. Adm Bender, Elis Buchwld, Dr..thlie Friedmn, Sue Jvitt, Hrry leinhus, Richrd Kobrin, Armnd Lindenbum, Herb Mehl, Sue Robins, Irwin Shpiro, Sm Silverstein, nd Isrel Wldmn. The President clled for vote nd the bove Trustees were elected unnimously. Mr. Kobrin then indicted tht the Constitution, in Article 5, Section 1, provides tht the Bord of Trustees my, from time to time, elect other Officers besides President, Vice President, Secretry nd Tresurer. It is the recommendtion of the Nominting Committee tht second Vice President nd Finncil Secretry be dded, s ws the cse lst yer, nd tht Gbbi lso be dded. Mr. Kobrin then nominted Irwin B. Robins s Gbbi, Fred Distenfeld s Second Vice President, nd Stephen J. Kule s Finncil Secretry. He then nominted, further, Dvid Ixvy s Vice President, Dr. Gilbert N. Presenttion to Benjmin Brown As his first ct in office, Mr. Gurewitsch expressed the thnks of the congregtion to Benjmin Brown for ll tht he hs done for this community nd he expressed the hope tht Benjy would continue to serve KJ nd its members for mny yers to come. Mr. Gurewitsch then clled upon Rbbi Lookstein for few closing remrks. Rbbi Lookstein spoke bout Benjmin Brown s n inspiring exmple of someone who helped the syngogue to estblish itseli on the three pillrs with which the Ethics of the Fthers opens: Torh, worship, nd cts of chrity. He described Benjmin Brown s person devoted to the observnce of Torh nd its study. He cited the outgoing President for his consistent ttendnce t Tlmud shiurim through the yers. The Rbbi prised Benjy Brown for his extrordinry relibility s member of the dily minyn. We never hd President, he sid, who worshipped literlly every dy in the morning throughout his tenure. We never hd President who ws more devoted to the syngogue in terms of service. No tsk ws too light, no responsibility ws too txing. Finlly, s prctitioner of the rt of chesed, Benjy nd his fmily hve estblished n envible record. Both he nd Frn re members of our chevr kdish. They visit everyone in the hospitl. They re the first to cll for hppy nd sd occsions. They render cts of kindness with their substnce nd their persons. They re wonderful exmples worthy of-emultion.
