Romans 12:1-2 & 21 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. 2

Conduct Jeremiah 2:12-13 Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the LORD, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. Father, thank you that you are the fountain of living waters and the only place we can be perfectly satisfied. I pray that Rainbow Forest members and guest here today would believe with all of their hearts that you are their ultimate source of complete satisfaction. Make them alert to even the subtle tendencies to turn away from you to find happiness somewhere else. Cause them to see and understand the weight of loss and desolation that comes from turning away from you. Help them to flee the futility of trying to find happiness through their own devices. Forgive them when they engage or pursue you in a casual way. Create in them a craving for you and your ways in all things. Strengthen them to help those around them turn away from their futile ways and find fullness of joy in you! For your glory and their good, in Jesus name, Amen! 3

1 Corinthians 2:1-8 1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 3 I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. 6 However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, 8 which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 5

1 Samuel 16: So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, "Surely the LORD'S anointed is before Him." 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." 8 So Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one." 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one." 10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen these." 11 And Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all the young men here?" Then he said, "There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here." 12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the LORD said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!" 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah. 6

1 Samuel 17: Then as he talked with them, there was the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, coming up from the armies of the Philistines; and he spoke according to the same words. So David heard them. 24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were dreadfully afraid. 25 So the men of Israel said, "Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel; and it shall be that the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give his father's house exemption from taxes in Israel." 26 Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, "What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" 7

27 And the people answered him in this manner, saying, "So shall it be done for the man who kills him." 28 Now Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab's anger was aroused against David, and he said, "Why did you come down here? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the insolence of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle." 29 And David said, "What have I done now? Is there not a cause?" We are studying the book of 1 Samuel. Samuel was the last Judge of Israel. He also serves as a prophet and a priest. He becomes the King Maker. He anoints Saul as the first king of Israel. Several things we want to remember and learn from the life of King Saul. 8

Remember at Saul s presentation to the nation as the first king, we might think he appeared to be a humble man. He hid behind the stuff, the equipment or the baggage. Saul outwardly was taller and appeared to everyone to be the most qualified person to become the first king of Israel. But as time will show, Saul had a major problem with a poor self-image. He struggled with self-worth. He did not accept himself. If you asked me what one of the major causes of conflict and struggles in a person life is or where it comes from, I would probably say it s a selfacceptance problem. A person with this problem tends to have major problems and conflicts with other relationships. People with this issue usually go to one of two extremes. They withdraw They isolate themselves from others. They appear to be introverts and don t want to get involved in activities with others. Or they do just the opposite. They come across as proud and arrogant. The brag and dress in a way where they draw attention to themselves. 9

Notice several things with Saul. Saul did both. First he hides wants appears not to want to be in the limelight. But as the position of kingship is placed on him he now does just the opposite. He takes credit for what others accomplish and makes sure everyone knows about it. Takes credit for his son, Jonathan s victories. He tries to appear spiritual when in reality he has no relationship with the Lord. He becomes his own authority. Doesn t recognize God s authority in his life or leadership. (Chapter 13) He is fearful of taking major risk lest he appear to be a failure. He is focused on what others think of him. In chapter 15 when confronted with his disobedience by Samuel, he makes excuses and blames others. A person with a poor self image is plagued with discouragement and depression. Saul becomes a bitter and depressed man. 10

Saul compares himself with others When David starts to get recognition for his accomplishments, Saul gets very jealous. As you read through the rest of Saul s life, he even tries to kill his own son, Jonathan and thinks everyone is conspiring against him. Today, some would say he had a bi-polar disorder. That might be true, but the real problem is not accepting himself as God created him. One of the causes of a poor self-image in not accepting the unchangeable features in your life that God created you with. The Physical Hail color Eye color Height Facial features Your parents Your ethnicity skin color Your mental and intelligent level 11

God made you in His image. You are unique! God loves you! God has a very special plan and purpose for your life! What is your spiritual gift and are you exercising that gift in His Church? Understanding who you are in Christ and what your part is in His kingdom work! Isn t it interesting that: When Samuel finds Saul, Saul is looking for lost donkeys. When Samuel finds David, David is caring for sheep. If Saul was "the people's king," then David was God's king, and the events recorded in these two chapters indicate clearly that God's hand was unquestionably on David, the leader of His choice. 12

1. God chose David. (1 Sam. 16:1-13) Had an election been held in Israel to choose a replacement for King Saul, it's not likely that the people would have chosen David, but he was God's first choice. "He also chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds; from following the ewes that had young he brought him, to shepherd Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance" (Ps. 78:70-71). David's city Bethlehem (1 Sam. 16:1-5) David's family (1 Sam. 16:6-10) David's occupation a shepherd (1 Sam. 16:11) David's appearance (1 Sam. 16:12a; 17:42) David's anointing (1 Sam. 16:12a-13) 13

2. God prepared David (1 Sam. 16:14-23) David is asked to play harp to help Saul David is ask to be Saul s armor bearer The key to David's success in life is stated in 1 Sam. 16:18 "the Lord was with him." (See 18:12, 14, 28.) This was also the secret of the success of Joseph (Gen. 39:2-3, 21, 23), Joshua (Josh. 6:27), and Samuel (1 Sam. 3:19), and it is the basis for success in the Christian life today. David knew his gifts (Rom. 12:3), he experienced the power of God in using these gifts in his daily life. He loved the Lord and worshiped Him, and he surrendered himself to do the work God had called him to do. As long as he followed the Lord, God blessed and used him for his glory. 3. God guided David (1 Sam. 17:1-27) David was a Spirit-led man and his every decision had to be in the will of God and for the glory of God. Others might come and go as they pleased, but David was guided by the providential hand of God. We can see the guidance of God in the events reported in chapter

Goliath is described as standing nine feet, nine inches tall, wearing a coat of mail that weighed 125 pounds and carrying a spear that weighed 15 pounds. He was a formidable opponent indeed. He had presented himself to the army of Israel each morning and evening for forty days, and apparently David arrived on the final day (17:16). Jesse chose just the right day to send David to the battlefield to carry food supplies to his three brothers and their commanding officer (vv ). 4. God encouraged David (1 Sam. 17:28-39) David's eldest brother, Eliab, became angry when he heard that David was inquiring about Saul's offer and he ridiculed him (vv ). "We're soldiers and all you are is a shepherd boy! You came to see the battle! Go home and take care of your little flock and leave the fighting to us!" David s Response: Is there not a cause. 15

King Saul tried to discourage David and wasn't any more help, either in what he said or what he advised. "You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth, and he is a man of war from his youth" (1 Sam. 17:33). David had experienced the power of God in his own life and he knew that the Lord could turn weakness into power. While caring for the sheep, David had killed a lion and a bear, and he knew that the Lord could deliver him out of the hand of Goliath. It's as though he sees Goliath as just another animal attacking God's flock! 16

Saul knew nothing personally about this wonderful power of God, so he advised David to wear his armor. Saul didn't have the faith to believe that God could do something new, so he suggested the old-fashioned time-honored method of warfare. But David knew he had to put his trust and faith in the Lord! 5. God enabled David (1 Sam. 17:40-58) It was the Lord's victory (1 Sam. 17:40-47) While there are many applications of a Bible passage, there is only one basic interpretation, and the interpretation here is that David did what he did for the glory of God. David came to the contest in the name of the Lord, the God of the armies of Israel, and he wanted Goliath, the Philistine army, and all the earth to know that the true and living God was Israel's God (v. 46). 17

God wants to use His people to magnify His name to all the nations of the earth. This purpose was involved in the call of Abraham (Gen. 12:1-3) and God's choice of the people of Israel (Deut. 28:9-10). One purpose for Israel's sojourn in Egypt and the judgments God sent against Pharaoh was the proclaiming of God's name and glory to all the earth (Ex. 9:16). The parting of the Red Sea to let Israel out, and the opening up of the Jordan River to let them into Canaan, bore witness to all the nations that Israel's God was the true God (Josh. 4:23-24). Even the building of the temple was a witness to the Gentile nations of Israel's God so that they might know Him and fear Him (1 Kings 8:42-43). What the Lord did through David would be recorded and told around the world and bring great honor to the name of the Lord. 18

The very weapon that David used a sling was a shepherd's weapon, and yet God used it to defeat the giant and rout the Philistine army. When Goliath saw a lad coming with a sling in one hand and a staff in the other, he laughed at him. "Am I a dog that you come at me with a stick?" But David announced that his real power was the name of the Lord of Hosts, the name that Goliath and the Philistines had insulted. David wanted the whole assembly Israel and the Philistines to know that the Lord doesn't need swords and spears but can deliver His people in His own way through the humblest of means. It was David's victory (1 Sam. 17:48-51a) The Lord uses means to accomplish His purposes, and David was the prepared servant for this occasion. As a shepherd alone in the fields, he had learned to trust God, and as a faithful guardian of the flock, he had mastered the use of the sling. David had confident faith in God because he had found Him dependable in the crises of life, and he knew that the Lord would not desert him now. 19

The Spirit of God lived in David's body and would enable him to win the battle. God guided the stone and it sank into the giant's forehead and he fell on his face before the two armies. David stood over the fallen giant, took out the giant's sword, and cut off his head, an act that not only guaranteed the victim's death but also humiliated him and his army and announced total victory. Years later, David would write, "It is God who arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect... He teaches my hands to make war so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze" (Ps. 18:32, 34). It became Israel's victory (1 Sam. 17:51b-54) Even as a youth, David displayed one of the marks of a great leader: he took the risk and opened the way so that others could share in the victory. The Philistines didn't keep their part of the bargain and submit to Israel (v. 9); instead, they fled in fear, so the Jews chased them at least ten miles to the cities of Gath (Goliath's hometown, v. 4) and Ekron, slaying the enemy soldiers all the way. It turned out to be a tremendous victory for Saul's army. When the Israelites returned to the Philistine camp, they claimed the spoils of the victory that the Lord and David had won. 20

It has well been said that there are people who make things happen, people who watch things happen and people who don't know that anything is happening. David had insight into Israel's plight and knew what was happening. He realized that it wasn't a physical conflict between two armies, but a spiritual battle between truth and error, faith and superstition, the true and living God and dead idols. David's faith lifted the war to a much higher plane, just as Paul did in Ephesians 6:10. Our battle is against the devil and his army, and human weapons are useless in that conflict. Faith in God makes us participants with the Lord in the battle for truth. "And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith" (1 John 5:4). David s life as a shepherd, a soldier and a sovereign reflected his understanding of who Jehovah was, and what his purpose in life was. 21

When we meet David as a shepherd, he no doubt had been spending much time as he watched the sheep, laying under the stars, thinking and meditating on how Great His God Was! And David s self-worth and self-acceptance was based on knowing that God had created him for His glory and his purpose in life was to honor the name of Jehovah and live for His glory! David s battle with Goliath, was not about just defeating the giant and the Philistines, but in defending the honor of the name of Jehovah. This was the cause of David s entire life. Read the many Psalms that David wrote about making Jehovah famous and His name great!!!! Psalm 8:1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Psalm 20:1 May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! 22

Psalm 138:1-8 1 I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; 2 I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word. 3 On the day I called, you answered me; my strength of soul you increased. 4 All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O LORD, for they have heard the words of your mouth, 5 and they shall sing of the ways of the LORD, for great is the glory of the LORD. 6 For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar. 7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me. 8 The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. 23
