6 Be Strong and COURAGEOUS

It s time to lead. Be strong and courageous. When you say the word leader, what face or name comes to mind? An entrepreneur or CEO? A pastor? A coach? A general? Let me add one more entry to the list: you. Do you think of yourself as a leader? You are. You may not lead a business, a church, a team, or a military unit, but you are still called to lead. A husband becomes a leader when he says, I do. Parents become leaders as soon as the baby is born. Employees who have responsibility for others are leaders in the workplace. Church members are leaders when they serve guests in the parking lots, teach children and students, or serve on the financial team. So what s your blueprint for leading? We have a great model of leadership in Joshua, the man God empowered to move His people from wandering in the wilderness to conquering their own land. Throughout the Book of Joshua, God has given us a blueprint on how to be godly and effective leaders. So let s explore leadership through the lens of God s Word. Think of the leadership role God has given you. Picture in your mind the faces of the people you lead and influence. Open your heart to what God can do by His power when servants and leaders like you make themselves available. Let s walk through this door together and be changed into the leaders God desires. Paul Jimenez Paul Jimenez is Senior Pastor at Taylors First Baptist Church in Taylors, South Carolina. Paul served on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., before God called him to seminary and service to the local church. He is married to his best friend, Cheri, and together they deeply love and parent a daughter and a son. Most of all, he wants to see the kingdom of God break through in his family, his church, and throughout the world. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 7

When have you wondered, Am I ready for this? QUESTION 1 #BSFLBeStrong BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 9

THE POINT As you lead, submit to God s authority and direction. THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE Some moments in our lives certainly are more stressful than others. For General Dwight D. Eisenhower, one such moment came on the eve of sending thousands of troops across the English Channel on D-Day into the teeth of the German army that waited on the cliffs of Normandy. He d planned and prepared, but uncertainty lay ahead. Would help from Allied air forces soften the enemy? Would paratroopers take and hold ground beyond the cliffs? Would the equipment arrive to support the men? How many men would die because of his leadership? Eisenhower was so uncertain about the success of D-Day he drafted a message taking full blame, should the mission fail. 1 You and I surely don t carry the stress General Eisenhower felt on the eve of D-Day, but at times it may feel like it. Our stressful moments may come when we continue day after day in a challenging work environment, or when we ve sought God for a long awaited answer to prayer with no clear response. Perhaps, we re working to strengthen a fractured relationship and progress is slow. Joshua was another leader standing on the banks of a body of water with enemies waiting on the other side. From this D-Day long ago, we can learn much that will help us lead in whatever role we ve been given. 10 SESSION 1

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY? Joshua 1:1-9 (HCSB) 1 After the death of Moses the LORD s servant, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, who had served Moses: 2 Moses My servant is dead. Now you and all the people prepare to cross over the Jordan to the land I am giving the Israelites. 3 I have given you every place where the sole of your foot treads, just as I promised Moses. 4 Your territory will be from the wilderness and Lebanon to the great Euphrates River all the land of the Hittites and west to the Mediterranean Sea. 5 No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. I will be with you, just as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous, for you will distribute the land I swore to their fathers to give them as an inheritance. 7 Above all, be strong and very courageous to carefully observe the whole instruction My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or the left, so that you will have success wherever you go. Recite (v. 8) The Hebrew term means to meditate, as in Psalm 1:2. The modern idea of rehearsing something through repetition captures the meaning of recite perfectly. Prosper (v. 8) This term does not mean to make money, but rather to accomplish God s directives and goals for us as revealed in His Word. Succeed (v. 8) This word is similar to prosper but emphasizes developing the ability to see and do things God s way, resulting in a Godhonoring lifestyle. 8 This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to recite it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do. 9 Haven t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 11

THE POINT As you lead, submit to God s authority and direction. Joshua 1:1-6 Do you see yourself as a leader? You are. Everyone leads in some capacity. Even if your influence only touches the life of one person, that is leadership. That s why the Book of Joshua is for you. Its overarching message is that God is in control as we stand on the banks of our leadership challenge. God had engineered all that had happened up to this point in Joshua s life. Joshua likely had seen the supernatural power of God as He brought His people out of Egypt and miraculously took care of them for 40 years. God had prepared Joshua well, having positioned him at the side of the great leader Moses. In Joshua 1, God called Joshua to lead. God had engineered the circumstances of the people Joshua was leading. God had been faithful to the promises He made to the patriarchs hundreds of years earlier. And to you and your future offspring I will give the land where you are residing all the land of Canaan as an eternal possession, and I will be their God (Genesis 17:8; also 26:4; 35:11-12). God was at work to fulfill the promises He had made. God was ready to engineer the circumstances of what was ahead. God mapped out the steps ahead for Joshua and the people regarding the land they were to inherit. As for the people who would threaten them on the way, God had a response: No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. When I drive, I always want to be one or two turns ahead in my thinking. If my wife is giving me directions, I ll ask, But what s ahead? What s the next turn? Many of us approach leadership in the same way. We want to know what s coming every potential challenge so we ll be prepared. But God is in control, and He desires that we trust Him for what lies ahead. He ll reveal what we need in His perfect time. God has already worked in you, He s working in others, and He s ready to work in the challenge ahead. Where in your past can you see evidence of God s faithfulness? QUESTION 2 12 SESSION 1

Joshua 1:7-8 God has spoken to us through His Word, the Bible, and through the Author of His Word, His Holy Spirit. God has revealed Himself, how He works, and how we re wired. When God spoke to Joshua on the eve of moving into the land, He reminded Joshua that it was His Law His revealed words that would guide Joshua in carrying out his leadership role. How was Joshua to stay centered on God s book of instruction? How are we to do this? We are to recite or meditate on the Scriptures consistently day and night so that it produces a diligent response you may carefully observe everything written in it. Reciting and meditating on Scripture is to clear your mind of your own thoughts and desires. Clearing your mind of your own thoughts is not the same as emptying your mind, as many Eastern philosophies encourage. It means to clear away your thoughts so you can actively think about God s words. Biblical meditation and recitation means you center your thoughts on what God has said and then declare it verbally so that you can remember it and obey it. Performing these actions equipped Joshua for leadership. Obeying the Scriptures would enable Joshua to prosper and succeed in his mission. We can hold to this promise as well, but it is not a promise guaranteeing financial prosperity or material success. To prosper in the Old Testament meant that God by His goodness would enable a person to complete his or her endeavors. For instance, the same root word was used of Joseph as he capably managed his Egyptian employer s affairs (Genesis 39:2) and of the Messiah who would suffer and die but ultimately accomplish God s plan (Isaiah 53:10). Success carries the idea of acting wisely and with insight as one carries out his task or mission. How has God s Word equipped you for challenges in your life? QUESTION 3 We all lead in some capacity. With the Word of God as our guide, we are able to wisely carry out our responsibilities toward their proper end. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 13

THE POINT As you lead, submit to God s authority and direction. "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear. " What does it look like for a believer to be strong and courageous in today s culture? QUESTION 4 AMBROSE REDMOON GOD IS WITH US How can you be strong and courageous in the following roles? Friend Church member Work associate Spouse 14 SESSION 1

Joshua 1:9 God repeated His command to be strong and courageous. While anything God says is important, in this passage, God s message held deep importance to Joshua. And He said it again and again. In verse 5, God comforted Joshua with the promise that He would be with him and would not leave or forsake him. God then added in verse 9 that He would be with Joshua wherever he went. As a result, Joshua did not have to be afraid or discouraged. In fact, God commanded him three times to be strong and courageous (vv. 6-7, 9). Fear and discouragement are natural feelings; we can overcome those feelings through the supernatural presence of the Holy Spirit. Be strong and courageous: 1. When you consider the great task in front of you. Joshua would be leading an enormous number of people into the new land. Sometimes we can t help but be overwhelmed when we consider the size of the task in front of us. So He says to us: Be strong and courageous; I will be with you. 2. So you can respond diligently to the Word of God. At times, the Scriptures will call us to step outside of our comfort zones to act wisely, with integrity, or for the greater good of the ones we lead. God may call us to lead in a direction that s simply not popular. God knows that if we are to prosper and succeed in our leadership, we must do so biblically, and that often takes courage. 3. As you move forward. At times we will feel ready to move forward. But other times we ll be ready to fold up the tent, content to remain where we are. This is when we need to hold onto the comforting promise: the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. In what area of your life do you need to step up and lead? QUESTION 5 BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE 15

THE POINT As you lead, submit to God s authority and direction. LIVE IT OUT Everybody leads in some capacity. Everybody. So how will you apply the truths from this passage to your life? Write it down. Briefly record what you feel your mission or responsibility is, whom you are called to lead, and why you feel challenged in doing so. Seeing it on paper will bring clarity. It ll also be a reminder to ask God to grow you and the ones you lead. Memorize Joshua 1:8 and allow its truth to strengthen and encourage you. Post this Scripture on your mirror, near your computer, or some other place you will see it often. Step out of your comfort zone. Pray and ask God to show you one way to step out in courage this week. You may not lead significant military campaigns, but your decisions are no less important to God. The next time you wonder, Am I ready for this?, take heart. God s ready and He s with you. Being a Leader and How it Happens The first leadership role I remember being elected or selected to was president of my church youth group. I don t think there were any formal duties and the biggest qualification, it seemed, was not to be afraid to get up front, tell everyone to be quiet, and make some announcements.
