3 FROM OUR SENIOR RABBI THE HIGH HOLY DAYS ARE A DICHOTOMY Meaning in Today s World The High Holy days are a dichotomy. On the one hand, on the holy days we have a greater sense of gratitude and appreciation for one s blessings. On the other hand, there also exists inside of us a sense of foreboding, a feeling of inner sadness, a compulsion to seek and give forgiveness. The juxtaposition of the competing emotions of these holy days is descriptive of the human dynamic. Aren t our lives filled with such contrasts? One day we feel on top of the world and the next day difficulty comes our way. In exploring both of the emotional sides of these holy days, we come to insight. Gratitude and Appreciation: Prayer is one of the Jewish ways to give thanks. Such prayers allow us the time we need to reflect and give thought and thanks to that which made us who we are. Too often, we human beings live in ways in which we never stop to smell the roses. Judaism and Jewish prayer in particular, is our tool to stop and smell the roses. The words inspire us to contemplate and acknowledge all the goodness that has come our way. Even when one walks in the valley of shadows, during trying times, we can find lessons for which to give thanks, love that is unending, kindness that abounds and family and friends who comfort us. How much the more so in times of joy life is filled with ups and downs and the holy days give us the opportunity to realize the goodness in our lives. The essence of being good is being able to see goodness around us. If we can t see it, appreciate it or thank it we can t be it! Take the holy days and make that time a thank you fest, in which we verbalize to any and all the goodness in our lives. We all know, throughout our journeys, life is too short. Don t leave things unsaid don t be the man who standing at his wife s graving was crying, I love you, I love you. To which the rabbi said, I know you love her. And the man said, No you don t rabbi! I loved her and once, I almost told her. Tell those you love why you love them and tell them now. Foreboding, Sadness, Forgiveness The holy days bring out the tears, the heaviness of the heart and the sense of not having reached our goals. The broken and unrepaired relationships that could have been healed and the anger that still resides in us bring that heaviness to the fore during the holy days. But make no mistake about it this is good! To feel means we are alive. To have sadness means we can transform it into meaning. To experience loss means we felt love and kindness at one point, even though now it is gone. The holy days do their trick feelings are good, even ones that make us sad. The Torah tells us that when God created the human being, God said, This is very good. The fullness and richness of a life well lived is seen in the spectrum of emotions one encounters no human being is immune from them. And this is very good. The holy days give us a spiritual structure and pathway to purpose and meaning for the year ahead. Don t let it pass us by. Let s not send our children to school bring them here. Let s not go to work on the holy days for this is our holy work on these days and doing such soul searching will only make us better at school or at work. Rabbi Richard Steinberg The Rona Perley Memorial Senior Rabbinic Chair I invite you to bring your whole self to services this season and together we can find the deeper meaning of our own existence through a Jewish lens. May you all have a sweet and wonderful New Year. A LIFETIME OF BELONGING OCTOBER

4 FROM OUR RABBI & DIRECTOR OF LIFELONG LEARNING TURN, TURN, TURN Rabbi Leah Lewis Rabbi & Director of Lifelong Learning The Jaffe Family Rabbinic Chair In the world of competitive swimming, not only is it critical to have a well-formed, smooth stroke, but also a seamless turn. During this summer s Olympic Games, I watched with amazement as, lap after lap, these athletes glided through the water. They make it look so easy, but we know that it is not. Neither the stroke nor the turn. Through 12-time medalist, Ryan Lochte, the world saw just how difficult this can be. And although we watched him in the pool, it was his actions outside of the pool during a night out in Rio that offer us an important lesson during this month, when we will observe and celebrate Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur the High Holy Days. Back in August, I was sitting with my two boys, ages 13 and 10, when the headline appeared on my computer screen Ryan Lochte had been held up at gunpoint. Without hesitating, my boys, blessedly naïve of the often dangerous realities of our world, turned to me, confused. What does it mean to be held up at gunpoint? Wanting them to have a truthful grasp on our world, I found myself explaining the nature of this violent crime. I wish there hadn t been a need for them to understand. Now, it has, and they will forever carry in their minds an image of a gun pointing at an innocent human being. How fortunate that in their lives, this had simply never before come up. If nothing else, I am thankful that it appeared in the news and not in their neighborhood. Then, a couple of days later, it was revealed that the story had been fabricated. The events of that fateful evening hadn t happened at all the way that Lochte had described. He issued the following statement: I want to apologize for my behavior last weekend for not being more careful and candid in how I described the events of that early morning and for my role in taking the focus away from the many athletes fulfilling their dreams of participating in the Olympics. I waited to share these thoughts until it was confirmed that the legal situation was addressed and it was clear that my teammates would be arriving home safely. It s traumatic to be out late with your friends in a foreign country with a language barrier and have a stranger point a gun at you and demand money to let you leave, but regardless of the behavior of anyone else that night, I should have been much more responsible in how I handled myself and for that I am sorry to my teammates, my fans, my fellow competitors, my sponsors, and the hosts of this great event There may have been many words in Lochte s carefully scripted apology, yet I heard only three: I m sorry, but Whether guided by legal counsel or parents or teachers or peers, our society encourages us to apologize all the time. And often, those two words, I m sorry, become void of meaning. They lose their meaning enough that we do not hesitate to follow them with the ultimate dismissal of responsibility. I m sorry, but I can only take partial responsibility for my actions. And, so, to the famed championship swimmer, I say, I m sorry, but I was not planning to tell my children about violent crime, only to later have to un-tell the story. I m sorry, but I hadn t aspired for them to see an Olympian they admired be their teacher about the consequences of lying. For in these most absurdly and extremely insincere apologies, I am reminded that saying I m sorry and doing the work of this High Holy Day season are two very different things. The ten days of teshuvah, repentance, are a time for making amends. Part of that process involves apologizing for the wrongs we have done. But the Jewish notion of teshuvah asks more of us than rote I am sorry s. Literally translated as turning, doing teshuvah demands that we turn back in reflection and turn in new ways as we move forward. This requires us to carry honest regret for our actions, to feel remorse, to accept responsibility (without any buts), to confess, to make amends with those we have hurt, and to resolve to not repeat our wrongdoing when put in a similar situation. We are human. We all make mistakes and Judaism gives us an opportunity to move forward, refreshed, having done the hard work to master the turn. The ten days of teshuvah are a time to turn and to reflect, and to take responsibility for our actions qualifiers aside. When we do that, we can emerge into the new year having learned and having grown champions. May this new year be a year of reflection, responsibility and masterful turning for us all. 4 OCTOBER 2016 MEMORY MITZVAH MENTSCH MAKING MAKING MEANING

7 FROM OUR CO-PRESIDENTS SHM: SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE BY: RACHEL HARMAN-FRIEDMAN As you know, over the past few years, we have been working diligently on our building project. Planning this building has required that we really look at how we use our building, on all the ways we learn, pray and play together as a community. There are times when we come together as a community in its entirety, such as Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur. There are moments when we celebrate as a congregation for Shabbat, Channukah, Sukkot. There are even more occasions when we are engaged together in small groups of friends as chavurot. According to Wikipedia, a Chavurah is a small group of like-minded Jews who assemble for the purposes of facilitating Shabbat and holiday prayer services, sharing communal experiences such as lifecycle events, or Jewish learning. The word Chavurah is typically translated as fellowship coming from the Hebrew word chaver meaning friend. It is with these small groups that we study Torah on Saturday mornings, that we have Mussar study together. These types of groups are many in our congregation and include our brotherhood, NaSHiM, Israel Matters committee, Brit Tikvah, Empty Nesters, and many more. These are ways we come together to share experiences and interests. It is often easier to find a niche, to find a small group to connect to, to create meaningful relationships, to learn together. It is the strength of these small groups that allows our entire congregation to grow, thrive and maintain a feeling of close community. Chavurah also describes the very active program we have at SHM, where groups of families, couples or singles join together to form an extended family. These groups meet regularly, enjoy activities, shared interests, or just being together. My children and I are blessed to belong to our SHM Chavurah. Our group has been together for about 13 years all together, some members from the beginning, some coming later. We have had our share of families who have moved in and out of our group for various reasons, yet we remain a strong core group. This is our extended family, an intimate group that shares a bond that is SHM and being Jewish. We share lifecycle events such as bar and bat mitzvahs (adult and kids!), confirmations and graduations, funerals. Our Chavurah family is the first on our simchah (happy occasion) list and the first I would call in times of need. Watching the kids in our group grow into amazing young adults is as meaningful to me as watching my own children. The first of our kids recently headed off to college and the next group is quickly approaching. Our events together have morphed from picnics in the park to adult nights out as our kids are busier than the adults these days! While our events do not always focus on Jewish learning or holidays, the fact that we are all Jewish bonds us together in a way that cannot be replicated by any other activities or groups in which we may be engaged. Synagogue life, raising Jewish kids, the importance of being part of a Jewish community is the way in which we are like-minded. It is the tie that binds us. As our children grow up in secular Orange County, they know they have an extended Jewish family that is watching them grow, sharing with pride in their accomplishments and helping provide them with a Jewish connection that extends beyond the immediate related family. My Chavurah is just one of about 250 Chavurot at SHM. Many have been together for decades, some for just a short time. It takes some effort to get groups together. We all lead busy lives, our lives evolve and change over time, but keeping these small groups together strengthens our community, keeps us connected in ways that are meaningful to each of us, provides us with a family to lean on, celebrate with in times of joy and console in times of sorrow. The effort is worth it, over the years our group has struggled to find dates on a calendar that suits most and have worked to come up with events and activities that are fun and engaging for our different aged children. In the end, it is being together that matters most. Whether it is a Chavurah or other group of like minded Jews, I hope you find your niche at SHM. We have so much to offer, so many ways to get involved and so many different groups to join. This year will is a wonderful opportunity to strengthen those friendships that bind us together as community. If you are looking for ways to get involved or looking for Chavurah to join, please let us know. There is something for everyone at SHM. Beth Carroll & Rachel Harman-Friedman Temple Co-Presidents Building Program Update We are continuing to make quick progress on the Building Project and the Capital Campaign. Capital Campaign: We have raised $9,400,000! Don t miss out everyone has an opportunity to participate contact the office now and a fund raiser will connect with you. Building Project: We continue to collaborate with our various consultants (domus, Oltmans, AV, HVAC, Mechanical, Gafcon, etc.) to fine-tune the drawings and specifications to meet the 100% construction document deadlines. Security Grant A team is applying for a grant for some of the security features in the project. There are funds available from both the Federal and State governments for this purpose with the right justification and application. Finance Committee The Finance Committee has been meeting to identify financing options for the bridge period. Moving forward with contacting financial institutions is dependent on a final budget from completion of the construction document phase. Given the commitment our congregants have made and their level of fulfillment, we are in very good shape to project the incoming funding. Details are beginning to be discussed such as design of the Ark, where signage should go, etc. Packing up for the move continues with boxes stacked high in many of the nooks and crannies of the Temple. We received expert advice on packing and storing items and making good progress on readiness for move out which will happen very shortly. Planning for temporary offices for the Temple Clergy and Staff is underway more to come on this important element as we finalize the approach. A LIFETIME OF BELONGING OCTOBER

11 SCHOOL NEWS Yasher Koach (Congratulations) to our students, our parents and our staff on an AMAZING opening for our Religious School year! Our first day of school went smoothly with transitioning onto our temporary campus for the year, Tarbut V Torah (TVT), and our Alef to Tav Fair was filled with the lively events happening within temple life and several opportunities for families to get involved. Thank you to Rachel Harman, our co-president and Rabbi Lewis for organizing the Fair, and thank you to those who volunteered for the Fair. I would like to thank our Board of Education members and our Brotherhood Brew Crew members for sponsoring a plentiful First Day brunch for our entire school. In case you missed it, our Board of Ed members were out in full force on the first day, helping guide families to the brunch, to their classrooms, and passing out TVT Campus maps, which had classroom information on it. In addition, the Brotherhood Brew Crew members continued to be a pillar of consistency that get up early on Sunday mornings and serve bagels, snacks and drinks for both our parents and our students. For those that weren t at the Parent Meeting on the first day of school, please know that TVT is a kosher campus and, therefore, Brotherhood will not be serving hot dogs in the later part of the morning, so plan accordingly. However, they will be selling some healthier alternative snacks in addition to the bagels. As smoothly and quickly that September began and ended, October will be a busy month for Religious School. Although we do not have classes on October 2nd, 4th, 9th and 11th due to High Holiday observances, we will be kicking off our very first All- Family Holiday Celebration for Sukkot on October 16th from 9:30-11:30 am at Mason Regional Park! This event is not to be missed as we are completing on Survivor- Sukkot Island. More information will be ed to all families in the congregation with details about location, parking and what to expect. We will also have the pleasure of consecrating our Kindergarten students on October 23rd during a very meaningful ceremony, and on this same day, we will be celebrating Simchat Torah for a communitywide celebration! With lots of events coming up, October is sure to be a meaningful and fun-filled month!
