They often fought over the region of Gilead, which stretched east of the Jordan River. David had tried showing kindness to the Ammonites, but they humiliated the Israelite ambassadors. (See 2 Sam. 10:1-5.) Thus began a war between the Israelites and Ammonites. This context sets the scene for the story of David s sin and restoration. One evening, David looked from his rooftop and saw Bathsheba bathing. He inquired about her and found out that she was the wife of Uriah, one of David s elite soldiers. Her married status alone made her off-limits to David, but he nevertheless called for her and slept with her. 86 Older Kids Leader Guide Unit 10 Session 6

2 David probably assumed his sin would go unnoticed, until Bathsheba told him she was pregnant. With Uriah gone to war, it was obvious the baby was not her husband s. David had a plan. He called Uriah home from the battle and encouraged him to be with his wife. But Uriah refused. Uriah didn t think it was fair for him to be with his wife while other men were at war. Plan B: David instructed his army commander to position Uriah in the most violent part of the battle so he would be killed. This time, David s plan worked. Uriah was killed, and David took Bathsheba as his wife. God knew David s sin and sent Nathan the prophet to confront David. David s confession is recorded in Psalm 51. David knew making sacrifices would not be enough to please God and pay for his sin. God wanted David s heart to change so he would not want to sin again. Like David, we need more than a changed lifestyle to be made right with God; we need new hearts. Jesus died to satisfy God s wrath against sin so that we could be made alive in Him. 6 Additional resources for each session are available at gospelproject.com. 3 The BIBLE STORY David Sinned and Was Restored 2 Samuel 11:1 12:14; Psalm 51 David was the king of Israel. As king, David s responsibilities included leading the army. One spring, David sent out the army, and he put another man in charge of them. David stayed in Jerusalem. One evening, David looked out from the roof of his palace and saw a beautiful woman named Bathsheba. Bathsheba was the wife of Uriah, one of the best warriors in David s army. David sent his messengers to get Bathsheba, and she came to David s house. Later, Bathsheba told David that she was going to have a baby; the baby would be David s. David knew what he had done was wrong. David should not have a baby with someone who was not his wife. So David made a plan to make sure no one found out that Bathsheba s baby was his. David called Uriah home from the battle and told him to go spend time with his wife. But Uriah didn t think it was fair for him to relax at home while the other men were at war. He slept on David s doorstep and refused to see his wife. David s plan was not working, so he made up another plan. This time, he instructed Joab, who was leading the army, to send Uriah into the hardest part of the battle so he would be killed. So Joab sent Uriah to the most dangerous part of the battle, and Uriah was killed. David took Bathsheba into his house to be his wife, and she had a baby boy. God knew what David had done, and He was not happy with David. God sent Nathan the prophet to talk 88 Older Kids Leader Guide Unit 10 Session 6

4 to David. Nathan told David a story about a rich man who had many animals. When a traveler came, the rich man did not offer his own animal. Instead, he took a poor man s lamb the only lamb he had and gave it to the traveler to eat. David was angry. The rich man should die! he said. You are the man! Nathan said. God had given David a position of great power, but David killed Uriah to take his wife. David realized he had sinned against God. David deserved to die. You won t die for this, Nathan assured David, but God will punish you. Your son will die instead. David confessed his sin and prayed, God, create a clean heart for me. David realized he could try to please God with sacrifices, but that wouldn t be enough to pay for his sin. God wanted David s heart to change so that he would not want to sin again. Christ Connection: When David sinned against God, God forgave him, but sin always comes with a price. God spared David s life, but David s son died. When we sin, we can receive God s forgiveness because God sent His Son, Jesus, to pay the price for our sin. Jesus died the death we deserve so that we could be made right with God. KEY PASSAGE: Psalm 47:7-8 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world. Welcome time Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group. As kids arrive, invite them to tell about a time they were forgiven. How did it feel? Kids may also share a time they forgave someone else. Was it hard? Alpha-baa-t Words activity page, 1 per kid pencils or markers LOW PREP Activity page (5 minutes) Invite kids to complete Alpha-baa-t Words on the activity page. Challenge them to list words they can create using the letters on the sheep. (Examples: net, pen, pet, tee, peer, rent, tree, enter) Challenge them to create a six-letter word. (repent) SAY Do you know what the word repent means? Repent means to turn away from sin and turn toward God. In the Bible story we will hear today, a man named Nathan told David that he needed to repent. Session starter (10 minutes) OPTION 1: A sincere apology Choose four volunteers. Gather them and quietly explain that they will all tell the rest of the group, I am sorry. 90 Older Kids Leader Guide Unit 10 Session 6

6 Guide the volunteers to stand at the front of the room. Instruct them to take turns apologizing to the group. Kids may speak sarcastically, sincerely, impatiently, or doubtfully. Challenge the speakers and listeners to not smile. Permit new volunteers to take a turn as time allows. SAY How can you tell when someone is sincerely sorry? Did you know that God can tell when we are truly sorry for our sin? Being sorry means more than just saying you are sorry. In today s Bible story, we will see how King David sinned against God and was truly sorry. Do you think God forgave him? OPTION 2: Hidden ball game Guide kids to gather around a table. Sit at the table and position a table tennis ball on the table. Show kids three cups. Turn the cups upside-down. Move the ball under one of the cups. Lift the cup to remind kids where the ball is. Tell them to watch closely. Quickly mix around the cups without lifting them off the table. After several seconds, stop. Challenge kids to guess where the ball is. Lift up each cup to see if they are right. Play again as time allows. You may also allow kids to take turns moving the cups. SAY Did you have a hard time following the hidden ball? I tried hard to hide it from you. Do you think we can hide things from God? Today we are going to hear a Bible story about a time David tried to hide his sin from God. Let s find out what happened. cups, 3 table tennis ball Transition to large group God the King 91

Leader is carrying a long paper trumpet and a scroll. He or she unrolls the scroll and shouts an announcement.] LEADER Hear ye! Hear ye! [Abruptly sigh and roll up scroll.] Hey, everyone. I m glad to see you today, but I had a rough week. I really messed up. A few days ago, I completely blew it. The king wanted me to tell everyone that they were invited to a meal at 6 p.m., but I wasn t paying very close attention, and I told everyone to come to the palace at 6 a.m.! Needless to say, the king was quite upset when a large crowd of hungry people woke him up very early in the morning and no food was ready. I am very thankful that the king forgave me and did not fire me. You know what, though? This situation kind of prepared me to tell you about our Bible story today. Let s get started. 92 Older Kids Leader Guide Unit 10 Session 6

8 Giant timeline (1 minute) Show the giant timeline and briefly review previous Bible stories. Allow kids to share what they remember about stories from the last few weeks. Remind kids that after God rejected Saul as king, He chose David to be Israel s king. When Saul died, David became king and God gave Israel a time of peace. God made a covenant with David and said that his kingdom would last forever. God promised that Jesus would come from David s family. LEADER Today s Bible story is called David Sinned and Was Restored. Restore means to bring back to or put back into an earlier or original state. Isn t that great? Have you ever messed up and wished you could take back what you did? Our Bible story today is about how David sinned, but God restored him by forgiving his sin. Giant Timeline Big picture question (1 minute) LEADER I know these stories about Israel s kings can be discouraging; they weren t perfect! But don t forget the answer to our big picture question: Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world. Say that with me. Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world. Tell the Bible story (10 minutes) Open your Bible to 2 Samuel 11:1 12:14; Psalm 51. Tell the Bible story in your own words, or show the Bible story video David Sinned and Was Restored. LEADER Oh, wow! I am so glad that God gives us these stories in His Word. 9 questions to see how well you listened to the Bible story. Turn to a partner and tell him the answer. Ask a few review questions. When kids have shared answers with their partners, call on someone to tell you the answer. 1. Who was Uriah s wife? (Bathsheba, 2 Sam. 11:3) 2. How did David plan to kill Uriah? (David had Uriah sent to the hardest part of the battle, 2 Sam. 11:15) 3. Who confronted David about his sin? (Nathan, 2 Sam. 12:1-15) 4. What kind of heart did David ask God for? (a clean heart, Ps. 51:10) LEADER God forgave David when he repented of his sin, but sin always comes with a price. God spared David s life, but many troubles came to his life. Even David, the greatest of Israel s kings and a man after God s own heart, was a sinner in need of salvation. Remind kids that the punishment for sin is death. Point out that we are all sinners. LEADER When we sin, we can receive God s forgiveness because God sent His Son, Jesus, to pay the price for our sin. Jesus died the death we deserve so that we could be made right with God. Tip: Provide I m a Christian Now for new Christians to take home and complete with their families. The Gospel: God s Plan for Me (optional) Use Scripture and the guide provided with this session to explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Assign individuals to meet with kids who have more questions. Encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, small group leaders, or other Christian adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian. 94 Older Kids Leader Guide Unit 10 Session 6

Discussion starter video (4 minutes) LEADER Has anyone ever told you sorry but you could tell that person didn t really mean it? Watch this. Show the Unit 10, Session 6 discussion starter video. Lead kids to talk about the difference between being sorry and simply saying sorry. Allow kids to discuss how they can tell if someone is truly sorry. Point out that when someone is sorry, their actions change. For example, if you tell your sister you are sorry for borrowing her clothes without asking, but the next day you borrow her clothes again, she probably won t Unit 10, Session 6 discussion starter video God the King 95

11 believe that you were truly sorry. LEADER What can we do when we sin? (We can run to God and ask for forgiveness.) Sin has consequences, but God s wrath against sin was satisfied when Jesus died for our sin on the cross. When we trust in Jesus, He takes away our sin and gives us eternal life. We can repent and receive forgiveness. We can also forgive others because we have been forgiven. He Is King song Sing (4 minutes) LEADER Let s sing our theme song together now. Sing together He Is King. Pray (2 minutes) Invite kids to pray before dismissing to small groups. LEADER God, You are faithful even when we are not. Thank You for Your grace. Like David, we ask You to give us clean hearts. Help us to love You like we should. Please forgive us for our sin, Lord. Amen. Dismiss to small groups 96 Older Kids Leader Guide Unit 10 Session 6

12 The Gospel: God s Plan for Me Ask kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify that the word gospel means good news. It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids. God rules. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-17 aloud and explain what these verses mean. We sinned. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23) God provided. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. It s something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9. Jesus gives. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into God s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! Read Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; or 1 Peter 3:18. We respond. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. Read Romans 10:9-10,13. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heart that Jesus alone saves you through what He s already done on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus. Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus. God the King 97

Cards printable Key passage activity (5 minutes) Invite any kid who has memorized the key passage to recite it from memory. Then show the key passage poster and guide kids to read it aloud together. Cover the poster. Explain that you will say the key passage. When kids hear you say an incorrect word, they should shout, No! Read the key passage slowly, substituting some of the words and allowing kids to stop you and give the correct word. For example: Sing a song of knowledge (wisdom) for God is King of all the land (earth). God reigns under (over) the nations; God is standing (seated) on His holy chair (throne). If time allows, invite kids to take turns saying Psalm 47:7-8. The rest of the group should correct their mistakes. Bible story review & Bible skills (10 minutes) Print and cut apart the Who Am I? 14 reading the three sentences on their cards. Invite kids to guess the identity of the person being described. Kids should raise their hands to answer. When kids identify each person, instruct the volunteers to hold their cards in front of them so kids can read them. Guide the volunteers to stand in different corners of the room. Tell the rest of the kids to stand up. Explain that you are going to read something that someone in the Bible story said. Kids should move to the corner of the person who said those words. Read the following, pausing to allow kids to move between the volunteers. I am pregnant. (Bathsheba, 2 Sam. 11:5) My master Joab and his soldiers are camping in the open field. How can I enter my house? (Uriah, 2 Sam. 11:11) The rich man should die! (David, 2 Sam. 12:5) You are the man! (Nathan, 2 Sam. 12:7) You will not die, but your son will die. (Nathan, 2 Sam. 12:13-14) God, create a clean heart for me. (David, Ps. 51:10) SAY David sinned by taking something that did not belong to him. When Nathan confronted David, David was sorry he sinned. David repented. What did God do? (God forgave David when he repented of his sin.) David was a great king over Israel, but he was not a perfect king. He sinned. God had a plan to send a King through David s family who would be a perfect, sinless King. Who is our King? Jesus is our King forever, and He rules over the world. Option: Retell or review the Bible story using the bolded text of the Bible story script. God the King 99

15 LOW PREP cotton balls plastic spoons dull, dirty pennies plastic spoons vinegar, 1 4 cup salt, 1 teaspoon large, shallow bowl paper towels water Activity choice (10 minutes) OPTION 1: Sheep snatch Arrange kids chairs in a large circle. Position three cotton balls ( sheep ) on each chair and give each kid a plastic spoon. Explain the rules of the game: 1. When you say go, kids should move to collect other players sheep. 2. Tell kids that they may only carry one sheep on their spoons at a time. 3. When a player retrieves a sheep, he should carry it back and drop it into his own chair. (Point out that a player may return to his chair to find it empty!) 4. Kids should collect as many sheep as they can. Allow kids to play for several minutes. If the game gets too chaotic, call for everyone to stop. Count the sheep to see who has the most. Then reset the game so everyone has three sheep and play another round. SAY Nathan told David a story about a rich man, a poor man, and some sheep. Do you remember what happened? Which man had only one sheep? (the poor man) Which man had many sheep? (the rich man) Invite kids to retell the story that Nathan shared. SAY How did David react to Nathan s story? What was the story actually about? OPTION 2: Clean pennies Invite kids to clean pennies. Follow these steps: 1. Mix salt and vinegar in a bowl until the salt dissolves. 2. Use a spoon to dip a penny into the liquid for 10 seconds and then pull it out. What do you see? 3. Submerge all the pennies in the liquid. You may gently stir them. 100 Older Kids Leader Guide Unit 10 Session 6

16 4. After 5 minutes, remove the pennies and rinse them in water. 5. Lay the pennies flat on a paper towel to dry. SAY These pennies were dirty! But by washing them in the salt and vinegar, you helped restore them. Do you know what restore means? It means to bring back to or put back into an earlier or original state. You restored these pennies by making them shiny again! Who was restored in today s Bible story? (David) Who restored David? (God) God forgave David when he repented of his sin. God can restore us when we sin too. We don t have to try to hide our sins from God; He already knows. Jesus took the punishment we deserve for our sin, and when we trust in Him, God forgives us. Option: Review the gospel with boys and girls. Explain that kids are welcome to speak with you or another teacher if they have questions. Journal and prayer (5 minutes) Distribute pencils and journal pages. Encourage kids to write a prayer to God, like David did in Psalm 51. Encourage them to repent of their sin and to ask for and receive forgiveness through Jesus. Kids may also choose to copy some of David s words in Psalm 51. Then close in prayer. Confess that we need a Savior. Thank God for sending His Son, Jesus, to rescue us from sin and death. If time remains, allow kids to complete Life Events on the activity page. Kids should number the events in the order they happened in David s life. 1. David was anointed and fought Goliath. 2. David and Jonathan became friends. 3. God made a covenant with David. 4. David sinned and was restored. pencils Journal Page Life Events activity page, 1 per kid God the King 101
