DISCUSSION: What has stood out about what you have needed (or still need) to give attention to in getting ready for Advent as a preparation time before Christmas. READ: Luke QUESTIONS: 1. Genealogies can be a difficult part of scripture to read and to keep our attention. What are other areas in scripture which you find difficult to read? 2. Jesus has some interesting characters in his list of relatives. Who are some interesting characters in your family either past or present? Do they re stories get passed along? The 5 points raised in Dan s sermon were: God is fixed in history God is sovereign over all God is orderly in his ways God is aware of our name God is offering salvation for all 3. Choose one and share why this is significant and how it might give you new insight into your walk with God? 4. The Lamb s book of life is said to contain the names of faithful followers. When it s time for your eulogy to be written, what will be said about your walk with Jesus? PRAYER: Father in Heaven, Ever-living source of all that is good, keep me faithful in serving you. Help me to drink of Christ's truth, and fill my heart with his Love May I serve you in faith and love so I might receive the gift of your eternal presence. Let me never be separated from you and help me to do Your Will. In your most holy and precious name. Amen

The Gems of Genealogy Luke When putting together a sermon, I try to be excited about the Word, but I want to help you be excited. Tackling genealogies in a sermon therefore is kind of like being a kamikaze pilot the only way you expect it to end is in flames. Part of the problem is the what s-his-name who begat that-other-guy with names hard to pronounce. If God had chosen Australians it would ve been easier. We could have had Jesus, the son of Jo, son of Damo, son of Johno, son of Mick, son of Dave, son of Nev, son of Pato, son of God. So, most of us think, I m just gonna move on to something more interesting. I m guilty of this which is why I wanted to work on this. I found a fella named Jeremy Myers, who dug into this and came up with some good stuff for us all. He started by saying: Sometimes, in Scripture, the richest nuggets and the biggest jewels lie hidden in the deepest caves. When we get out our pickaxe and shovel, and pray for the illumination for the Holy Spirit, and then go digging, it is amazing what gems we will uncover. Genealogies, like most of scripture, are all unique. They have different facets, lessons, and things to learn but like gems, they lie hidden. To find them we have to go digging. This reminded me of a family holiday to Thunderbird Park. It was a great camping place. You can go fossicking for rocks that look like eggs. You have to work hard to find them. It s easy to give up however when you find them it s exciting to see what you find. You see you can have them cut in two and you find amazing colours and patterns inside. This genealogy of Jesus in Luke 3:23-38 is really rich with meaning and significance. We re going to cover a wide area to give you some background first. The Genealogy of Jesus (Luke 3:22-38) In Jesus day, 30 was the age most men entered public service. Up until then they would learn a craft or trade. At 30 they would start to practice it on their own. Priests didn t start to serve in the temple until they were 30 and this is also the age King David became king over Israel. The next part of our reading begins with being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph. In those days, people naturally assumed Jesus was the son of Joseph and Mary. Luke corrects this here by saying Jesus was the supposed son of Joseph. Another way to translate the Greek could be: as was the custom or as we find it on record. Luke is giving the recorded genealogy of Jesus from public documents.

Greeks and Romans had a very low view of women. In Greek and Roman genealogies, the names of women weren t allowed. For that reason Jesus genealogy wouldn t write down Mary s name, so they put down Joseph s name instead. Here is where it gets interesting Luke records Jesus genealogy through Mary s line. Anybody who knew Jesus family knew Mary s father was Heli, and Joseph s father was Jacob as recorded in Matthew 1:16. If we compared this genealogy in Luke 3 with the genealogy in Matthew 1, we would notice many differences and for various reasons. Matthew s trying to show Jesus as the perfect Jew and the legal heir to the throne of David. Royal lineage was always passed down through the father so Matthew draws Jesus lineage through Joseph. Luke, on the other hand, wants to show Jesus was a man and fully human. He can t draw the royal lineage through Joseph, because Jesus was not the biological son of Joseph. Jesus was, however, the biological son of Mary. And so that is what he does. He draws the physical lineage through Mary, back to David, Abraham, and the first man, Adam. I won t comment on all the names but there are some key figures here. In vs 31, we read of Nathan, David, Jesse, Obed and Boaz. David was the greatest King in Israelite history and Boaz is talked about in the book of Ruth. The cool thing here is we find Mary is also of the Royal line of David - not through Solomon as recorded in Matthew. Instead, Mary comes through David s son Nathan. This is significant in a prophetical sense. Joseph is from the direct lineage of Solomon. But one of Solomon s descendants named Coniah was a really evil king so God said no descendant of his would ever sit on the throne of David. Although the legal line went through Solomon to Joseph, the spiritually approved line went through Nathan to Mary. Jesus is the heir to the throne both legally and spiritually. What I love is that God never gave up on us. He didn t say I m done with them. This should help us prepare for Advent. You see, Advent is not only about repentance and humility, it s a time to be awe struck for who God is and what he s done. So here are 5 gems to dig into. To remind us why we can be awestruck at Advent time. 1. God is fixed in history. Christianity isn t based upon imagination. These are personal relationships entangled in history. Multitudes who have gone before us facing difficult questions as we do. They placed their faith in God and came away with a deeper awareness of God s presence. Hebrews gives a genealogy of faithful people. Men and women who, despite everything, remained faithful. They are referred to as a great cloud of witnesses. We use this phrase in church for people who have been spiritual role models.

It s a great phrase. It celebrates the presence of God we have seen and heard of being experienced in and through them. Their lives gives us hope for our future. There is a prize beyond this life, when we invest in our relationship with God now. 1 Corinthians reminds us of this: For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 2. God is sovereign over all. God arranged for Jesus to be King legally and spiritually. On a macro scale God s wouldn t be stopped. We see God s sovereign will succeed in looking into others lives. Yet we see God is sovereign on a micro scale, in the details of individual s lives. God s people didn t have care free lives. At times, life was horrible and traumatic. I love watching the show who do you think you are. The people that come on the show go on a journey of discovery as they look into their genealogies. They put themselves in the shoes of their ancestors. They often are broken and also energised by what they find. They get an insight into themselves, by looking back into the lives of their ancestors. Genealogies let us place ourselves in the shoes of others. We see God s will at work in us, as we look into our physical and spiritual ancestors, where God s sovereign will was at work in them. 3. God is orderly in his ways The Genesis version of creation is about order from chaos. Psalm 56 says God records the times we have cried. Hebrews 6 tells us God doesn t forget our labours of love. But there is another set of books. These are the book of life and the Lamb s book of life. We read of these books several times in the Old Testament, and frequently in the New Testament. Book of Life: Psalm 69:28; Deuteronomy 25:19; 29:20; Exodus 17:14; 32:32. Lamb s Book of Life: Daniel 12:1; Philippians 4:3; Revelation 3:5; 13:8; 17:8; 21:27. It appears the book of life is a book with everybody s name. Every person ever born is added. And when they die, their name is erased. The book of life is a book of the living. Then there is the Lamb s book of life (Rev 3:5). This contains the names of those who have believed Christ has done something for us that we could not do for ourselves. Genealogies show God keeps lists - this is a list we want to be on.

4. God is aware of our name Fourthly, genealogies tell us God knows our name. I am terrible at remembering names. I am glad to be Australian so I cover it with mate, chief, darl, sweet hey you. I knew a minister who could meet you once and remember your name. Everyone said what a great minister he was. He was a really caring guy, but their response was largely based upon this particular ability. Many cultures place great significance upon a name and upon others knowing their name. So what s so important about knowing somebody s name? Remembering somebody s name shows a level of care beyond the level we generally operate at. So when we forget it, it can appear like we don t care. This is frustrating for those of us whose mind doesn t always work the way we would like. This is an amazingly important message. There is a world around us of people who feel forgotten, insignificant, or there is nothing special about them. There is a world around us with rising mental health, domestic violence, abuse, stress and growing population. If these genealogies show nothing else, they show God cares enough to know who we are. Do you know someone who needs to know God loves them? Someone who needs to know - God knows your name. God knows who you are. 5. God is offering salvation for all Some in Luke s day believed salvation was only for Jews because they believed they could trace their genealogy back to Adam - humanities physical creation. In Jesus however we have been given a new beginning. A spiritual re-creation of humanity. Jesus came to bring us new life. He wants us to share in and share with those around us that God knows them and has new life for them. What does it mean for you to be related to God, not physically, but spiritually? What does it mean for you to know - God is my heavenly parent and I am known? What does it look like for you to let others know they are seen by God? One final thought If a time came when your name was considered whether it would be added to the list of faithful Christians, would the writer hesitate to write your name? If so, what needs to change in your life today? Let s pray
