Progression Toward Maturity Phase 1 Relationship with God (Rev. 4:11; 1 Cor. 1:9) Call of God is first to Himself - Creation to Christ - (Foundation for salvation) Phase 2 Position with Christ (1 Cor. 1:30a) New Creation (2 Cor. 5:17) Positioned in Christ and New Birth Explained (Foundation for Sanctification) Phase 3 Dependence upon the Spirit (2 Cor. 3:17-18) (Holy Spirit is the Spirit-of-Truth John 16:13-14) Introduction of the Church - (Church is the Pillar and foundation of Truth 1 Tim. 3:15) - Acts for Growing Believers Phase 4 Practical sanctification - Identification with Christ/Co-crucified with Christ/ Conformed to image of Christ (Rom. 6:6; Gal. 2:20; Rom. 8:28-29) Romans to Revelation for Growing Believers, Principles of Spiritual Growth, God s Masterpiece the Cross, and Looking unto Jesus lessons Conclusion Recommended order of study Detailed Explanation of Each Phase Phase 1 Foundation for Salvation - ( Creation to Christ ) The Christian life is a relationship; therefore our desire is to lead our readers into a deep and intimate relationship with God. In order to grow into that level of relationship with God, there are foundational truths that must be clearly taught and understood. These foundational truths include the following; The attributes of God - His love, power, grace, omniscience, omnipotence, justice, immutability, hatred of sin, faithfulness. The sinfulness of man, his helplessness to save himself, and his need for a Savior. Only God can provide a way of salvation The Gospel. Phase 2 Foundation for Sanctification - ( Positioned in Christ and The New Birth Explained ) 2

The moment someone is born again, there is an immediate change of position that takes place in his or her life. At that very moment, one becomes a child of God, and is taken out of Adam and placed into Christ. All that Christ is, and all that Christ has, becomes ours. Therefore, before service to God is considered, one must be grounded in an understanding of who we are in Christ. Some important foundational truths that should be emphasized in phase 2 teaching, includes the following; Placed into Christ Justified (declared righteous) and accepted in Christ. Child of God Restored to oneness with God Eternally secure in Christ His Divine power has given to us all things pertaining to life and godliness through His finished work on the cross. Our part is to believe. Phase 3 Dependence upon the Spirit and introduction of the church ( Acts for Growing Believers ) The position change that takes place in every believer's life at salvation, is immediate and complete. The daily "living out" of that position, on the other hand, is a growth process. It is the progression of growth that the Holy Spirit is working all believers through in His process of conforming us to the image of Christ. In order for believers to move on to maturity, we must learn to walk and depend upon the Holy Spirit. Therefore, our purpose in phase 3 teaching is to reveal the Holy Spirit's ministry, and His faithfulness to lead, guide, feed, and protect God's children, as well as to introduce the church. Some of the important foundational truths that should be emphasized include the following. The Holy Spirit's ministry to lead, guide, feed, protect, and establish us in truth. To emphasize the FAITHFULNESS of the Spirit to fulfill all that Jesus promised. To reveal the early church s dependence upon the Spirit. 3

The Holy Spirit is as faithful in our lives today, as He was to the early church in the book of Acts. Introduction of the church and her role. Phase 4 Practical sanctification; Identification with Christ; Conformed to the image of Christ ( Romans to Revelation for Growing Believers, Principles of Spiritual Growth, God s Masterpiece the Cross of Christ, and Looking Unto Jesus lessons.) The Holy Spirit is teaching us to walk less in the flesh and more in the Spirit, with Christ becoming more and more the object of our hearts. In phase 4, we will study through the epistles with the purpose of learning to rest in our identification with Christ and His finished work. As we, by faith, begin to appropriate identification truths, our co-crucifixion with Christ, our lives will become more and more conformed to the image of Christ, manifesting the fruit of the Spirit. Some of the important truths that will be emphasized in Phase 4 includes the following. The believer's identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. (Crucified with Him, and raised to newness of life) Sanctification is the process of walking less and less in the flesh and more and more in the Spirit. Our part in the process is faith in the finished work of Christ, and our identification with it. What it means to truly walk in the Spirit Putting off the old and putting on the new. Manifesting the life of Christ/ fruit of the Spirit. Conclusion: Recommended Order of Study: Being that there truly is a progression of growth that the Holy Spirit is taking all believers through, therefore our Bible lessons have been developed and arranged to line up with that work of the Spirit in our lives. Each set of lessons contain the foundational truths that must be in place in a person's heart in order to facilitate their growth unto the next stage of spiritual growth. Therefore, we believe that it is important to teach the lessons in the following order: 4

Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 1 A. Introduction Before the Lord Jesus' departure, He instructed the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father to be given them. (Luke 24:49) What was this promise of the Father? It was the promise of the Comforter, God Himself, coming to dwell in these newly forgiven and cleansed men and women. (John 16:7,13) Jesus' sacrifice had cleared the way for God's Spirit to take up permanent residence in a believer, to not only teach and transform them, but also empower them to bear witness of Him throughout the whole world. B. The Apostles and believers waited in Jerusalem 12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day s journey. 13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. Acts 1:12-14 (KJV) The believers obeyed Jesus by returning to Jerusalem and waiting for the Holy Spirit. C. The giving of the Holy Spirit 1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. Acts 2:1 (KJV) The Apostles and all the believers were in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost, waiting for the Holy Spirit as they were told. They gathered in an upper room. They most likely prayed and worshipped the Lord. (Acts 1:14). 6

Note: The day of Pentecost was a Jewish feast day. They were commanded by the law of Moses to observe it every year just like the feast of the Passover. The feast of Pentecost was held 50 days after the feast of the Passover. It was observed as a Sabbath day with public worship and sacrifices at the temple. This is what happened on this day as they gathered together: 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. Acts 2:2-3 (KJV) All the believers were baptized with the Holy Spirit. Not just the eleven disciples, but each one who was present. Jesus baptized all the believers with the Holy Spirit just as He had promised. This means that He was sent from heaven to live in the hearts of all His children. He came to indwell all believers for eternity, uniting us together in Christ. At the Last Supper, Jesus promised His disciples that He would ask His Father to send the Helper that would live in His children forever. John 14:16,17. Jesus kept His promise; He always does what He says. On that day, God sent the Holy Spirit to indwell all believers so that they would become God's temple here on earth. (1 Corinthians 6:19) As individuals, we are God's temple, but united together by the Spirit, we are also called God's temple; we are the Church of Jesus Christ. (Acts 20:28) That day of Pentecost was the first day of the beginning of God's church and since that time, all believers in the world have become a part of it. 7

What was God's first dwelling place here in the earth? The Bible teaches that God dwelt in the Holy of Holies in the tabernacle that Moses built according to God's instructions (Exodus 25:8; 40:34). For a Holy God to dwell in the midst of a fallen people, He had to create an elaborate system of laws and sacrifices that temporarily covered their sin and protected them from His wrath. Later He dwelt in the temple that Solomon built for Him (1 Kings 8:10, 11, 27). However, because the people loved sin more than God, they rejected Him and His glorious presence departed from the temple (Ezekiel 10:18-19). Soon afterward, the Babylonian army destroyed the temple (2 Kings 25:8-9). In time, a new temple was built and God's glory returned to the temple when He sent His Son, Jesus (Mark 11:11). The people did not recognize Jesus as God's Son and they crucified Him (John 19:6-7). When Jesus cried out on the cross, "It is finished," God ripped the curtain in the temple that divided the people from God's presence from top to bottom (John 19:30; Matthew 27:50-51). God wanted to show that the way back to him had been restored. In addition, His dwelling place would no longer be in a house, but in the hearts of His people. On the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came to live in God's people, God came to live in His people. This was the beginning of the church of Jesus Christ, from then on the Holy Spirit has dwelt in the heart of every believer. Today the Holy Spirit lives in every child of His; the moment you believed in Christ, He indwelt you. Today, we don't need to wait for the Holy Spirit to come like the disciples were instructed. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came to live in the Church of Jesus Christ; from then on every one who believed received the Holy Spirit. The moment we trusted Christ, we became a part of the church, therefore also receiving the Holy Spirit. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:4 (KJV) They were all filled with the Holy Spirit. This means that the Holy Spirit took control of them. 8

This is why the Holy Spirit was sent by Jesus, to control and teach His children to enable us to witness for Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit now lives in us as well, and wants to control and use us as He sees fit to witness and serve others. Reread Acts 2:4. Suddenly all of the believers began to speak languages that they did not naturally know. The Spirit of God enabled them to speak languages different from their native tongue. One would think that there would be nothing but confusion and noise in all of this excitement, but they didn't all speak at the same time, but, as the Holy Spirit directed. God is not the author of confusion and He was in control of this wonderful event, not the believers. What the four gospels are to Christ, the Acts of the Apostles is to the Holy Spirit; it is the beginning of the Spirit s presence and power, and inward working in the lives of believers. When Christ gave the Great Commission, Go ye... and make disciples of all nations, He linked it with the preceding comment, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth, and the succeeding assurance, Lo, I am with you all the days, even unto the end of the age. (Matthew 28:18-20) In this grace filled promise He made provision for the extension of his presence, the Holy Spirit, as well as the extension of the Church s missionary activities. As He had been with the disciples in Jerusalem, so would He continue to be with them as they went on and out through Judea, and Samaria, and unto the ends of the earth. How was this promise to be fulfilled? The answer is in the person of the Holy Spirit. To His disciples Jesus had said: It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. (John 16:7) By Christ s ascension and the Holy Spirit s descent, Christ exchanged His bodily presence with His disciples in Jerusalem for His spiritual omnipresence with His disciples everywhere. The Holy Spirit became His representative on earth. Just as Jesus while on earth had represented the Father, so the Holy Spirit was now to represent the Son. (2 Corinthians 13:14) 9

5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. Acts 2:5-11 (KJV) Why did the Holy Spirit give all these believers this ability to speak these different languages? There were multilingual Jews in Jerusalem because of the feasts. How did there become so many multilingual Jews? Hundreds of years earlier, God's people, the Jews, had rejected Him and turned to other gods or idols. God punished the Jews by allowing the Syrians and Babylonians to take them captive. Afterward God restored their freedom and brought some back to Israel to rebuild the temple, but many Jews made their home throughout the world. As the years passed, they eventually lost their language and only spoke the language the country in which they lived. However, whenever there was a feast, they would return to Jerusalem to worship. Jesus had told the Apostles, that when with the Holy Spirit, came to indwell them, would enable them to witness to the world regarding His death, burial, and resurrection: 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8 (KJV) The Holy Spirit gave them the ability, so that all the visiting Jews could hear the gospel in their own language. Upon hearing these men speak different languages; they were amazed to hear this message in their own language. 10

D. The people respond (Acts 2:6-13) 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? Acts 2:7 (KJV) 12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? Acts 2:12 (KJV) The people's response to this was a strange mix of amazement and skepticism. They probably recognized that they were Galileans by the way that they were dressed. They couldn't understand that all these men, being from Galilee could speak their languages. 13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. Acts 2:13 (KJV) While those from the other countries could understand what they were saying, those from Jerusalem couldn't understand, and they concluded that the disciples were drunk. E. Peter's explanation (Acts 2:14-21) How did the Apostles act when Jesus was first arrested and they didn't yet have the Holy Spirit? They acted like cowards. Self-confident Peter denied three times that he even knew the Lord when he was asked. He loved Jesus and was a believer but his faith was not enough to empower him to stand courageously against the religious leaders and Roman soldiers. Peter failed Jesus, but Jesus did not fail Peter. Jesus had prayed for Peter, He prayed that Peter's faith would not fail. In fact, his faith did not fail, now the Holy Spirit took control of Peter, and he stood up in front of everyone and fearlessly began to preach. 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: 15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. Acts 2:14-15 (KJV) 11

Peter stood up and explained the phenomena that they were witnessing. The disciples were not drunk, but rather were experiencing the control of the Holy Spirit in their lives. They were full of God's Spirit just as Jesus had promised in the book of John. F. Peter finishes his sermon (Acts 2:22-36) The Jews crucified Christ: 22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: 23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Acts 2:22-23 (KJV) Peter accused the Jews for crucifying Jesus. Jesus, the Messiah, healed the sick, the blind, and the lame just as scripture had predicted. (Isaiah 29:18-19; Isaiah 53:4) Jesus had raised the dead, and performed many other wonderful deeds to show that He was the chosen One of God, however, in spite of all the many miracles, most Jews still rejected him as the One sent from God. God raised up Jesus of Nazareth from the dead: 24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. Acts 2:24 (KJV) Peter then told them that God had raised Jesus from the dead. Although Jesus was not responsible for our sin, He willingly paid the full penalty for our sin, thereby overcoming Satan, sin, and death. Had He not paid the full price for our sin or had sins of His own to pay, He would not have been raised. We praise God that He accepted Jesus sacrifice as payment in full and raised Him from the dead. Had He not accepted Christ s death we would still be in our sins and doomed to pay for our sins for eternity (1 Corinthians 15:14-17). 12

All believers were witnesses to these things: 32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Acts 2:32 (KJV) Peter and the other believers, under the control of the Spirit, testified boldly of the Lord s resurrection just as Jesus had told them they would. When Jesus arose from the dead, to whom did He show Himself? To believers, not unbelievers, so that they could be witnesses to His resurrection. Right now, the Holy Spirit lives in each believer, for the purpose that we too can bravely tell others about Jesus payment for their sins. Jesus of Nazareth was exalted to the right hand of God: 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. Acts 2:33 (KJV) Peter then told them that God took Jesus back up to heaven and seated Him at His right hand as Ruler over heaven and earth. Because the Holy Spirit had come and given the Apostles and the other believers the miraculous ability to speak in other languages, this was proof that Jesus was seated at God's right hand in heaven (John 16:7). Peter said all should realize that God raised Jesus and exalted Him, and we should all trust Him as our Savior. Jesus is the Christ because He is the greatest prophet/priest of God Jesus is the Truth (John 14:6). As a prophet He came to speak the very words of God to us and show us exactly what God is like (John 1:18; John 8:26-28; John 12:49, 50; 2 Corinthians 4:6). Jesus is also the Christ because He is the great High Priest (Hebrews 3:1). All the other priests came and offered animal blood, which couldn't free anyone from the guilt of their sin, but Jesus offered His own sinless blood that eternally freed 13

us. Old Testament priests were only priests until they died but Jesus is our priest for all eternity, for He will never die (Romans 6:9). Because Jesus is our High Priest, without fear of rejection, we can enter God's holy presence at any time (Hebrews 4:16; 10:19). Jesus is also the Christ, for He is the great King. Jesus now sits at God's right hand with all authority and power (Matthew 28:18). He is Lord of lords and King of kings (1 Timothy 6:15)! He has been given a name which is above every name and at the name of Jesus every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He is Lord to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:10,11). We should trust Him gladly with everything, for He is our all sufficient Savior. G. The result of Peter's sermon (Acts 2:37-41) 37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward (perverse) generation. Acts 2:37-40 (KJV) After hearing Peter s sermon, many realized their sin of rejecting Jesus. The Holy Spirit convinced them that Jesus is the Son of God, the Deliverer. This happened as Jesus promised, the Holy Spirit would convince people that they were sinners and that Jesus is the promised Savior. (John 16:8) Jesus also said that the Holy Spirit would convince people that unless they repented, that they too would be condemned like Satan. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Acts 2:41 (KJV) 14

Many of those who heard His sermon, believed and asked Peter what they should do. On that day, many realized they were sinners, they trusted in Jesus, and were baptized as Peter instructed them. Those who believed, were baptized to show that they agreed with what Peter had taught them regarding Jesus, the promised Deliverer, who came to free them from their sins. This showed those present that they now were trusting in Jesus death to pay for their sin. In the next lesson, we will learn what the scripture teaches about baptism. 15

Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 2 A. The baptism taught by John The first time we read about baptism in the Bible, was when John was baptizing Jews in preparation for the coming Deliverer. 1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, 2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matthew 3:1,2 (KJV) 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, 6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. Matthew 3:5,6 (KJV) John told them that the Deliverer was coming; that they needed to realize their sin and be baptized. Then all that agreed with his message were baptized. They were baptized to publicly demonstrate that they believed John s message that the Messiah was coming and they recognized that they were sinners and in need of a Savior. They were preparing their hearts for the coming of the Lord. B. Jesus' command to baptize all disciples Before Jesus' return, He told His disciples what it is that they must do 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:18-20 (KJV) 16

Jesus told the disciples that everyone who responded in faith to the gospel was to be baptized. They were to baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. C. The meaning of baptism Believer's baptism different from John's baptism The baptism that John taught was different from the baptism that Jesus commanded. John s baptism was to show that the individual realized his or her sin, and was watching and waiting for the Deliverer to come and save them. The baptism that Jesus commanded, is to show that the believer realize his sin, and is trusting in Jesus death, burial, and resurrection to save him from his sin. The disciples were told to baptize believers in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God is now our Father, Jesus is our Savior, and the Holy Spirit now lives in us. A picture of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus The definition of the Greek word "baptizo" means to make fully wet, to immerse. The water that believers are immersed in, is a picture of the grave into which Jesus' body was placed when He died for us on the cross. The Bible says that Jesus died for us and was buried for us (Romans 5:8). To what extent did He die and was buried for us? He died for us to the extent that the Bible states that we died with Him, and when He was buried, we were buried with Him. (Colossians 2:12; Romans 6:3-5) Therefore, when we are baptized, we are showing others that we believe Jesus died and was buried for us. Just as the Bible says that we died and were buried with Him, so too, it says that when He was raised to life, we too, were raised to newness of life in Him. (Romans 6:4) When we as believers are raised up out of the water, it symbolizes our resurrection with Christ, and shows that we have been raised to newness of life in Christ. The new life that we now have is His life (Galatians 2:20). We died when He died, but, now He's raised and we too have eternal life. As we are raised from the water, we are showing that we believe that Jesus rose from the dead on our behalf. 17

D. What baptism is not and cannot do It is not part of our salvation Our salvation is solely based on what Jesus did for us. Although baptism is necessary in our walk of obedience to Christ, it is not a necessity for salvation. Faith in Christ is the sole necessity for salvation (Ephesians 2:8,9; Titus 3:5). Without a true Holy Spirit led conversion of the heart, baptism is meaningless. Being baptized won't help us get saved. It does not make anyone a child of God; if administered to an unbeliever it will only make him wet. We became God's children the moment we trusted in Jesus' death on the cross for our sins. If we are God's children, we will go to heaven when we die even if we are not baptized. An example of this is the thief on the cross. Faith in Christ alone prompted Jesus to promise him that he would be with Him in paradise that day (Luke 23:43). It does not cleanse us of sin Before God's eyes, baptism doesn't cleanse our sin. Only the blood of Jesus given for us on the cross can cleanse us of sin before God. Jesus' blood alone was the full payment for our sin and only it alone can cleanse us (Hebrews 9:14). E. The necessity of baptism In obedience to Christ At some point, you understood the good news of Jesus love for you and that you were lost in your sin, considered an enemy of God and that Jesus died for you (Romans 5:6-8). As the Holy Spirit opened your heart to understand, you believed. Jesus has commanded all believers to be baptized. (Matthew 28:19) As a testimony to others By being baptized, we show to others that we are not trusting in ourselves for salvation, but we believe that Jesus death, burial, and resurrection was done for us. When a believer is baptized he is 18

identifying with Jesus death, burial and resurrection. He is seeing Jesus death, burial and resurrection as his own. F. Conclusion Now that we have studied who should be baptized and why, in God's presence ask yourself the following question:...what doth hinder me to be baptized? (Acts 8:36) What is the Holy Spirit's reply?..."if thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest". (Acts 8:37a) Can you truthfully say the following?..."i believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God". (Acts 8:37b) 19

Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 3 A. Introduction After Peter preached on the day of Pentecost, 3000 new believers were added to the church that same day! They followed the Lord s command to be baptized and looked to the apostles to teach them all about their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Apostles began to teach these new believers about the new life they now had in Christ. This lesson will briefly mention the signs of new life the early church exhibited. The pattern is still applicable for believers today. It is important for us to be taught the truth about who we are in the Lord and what God wants to accomplish in and through us. B. The first church continued in the Apostle s doctrine 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles doctrine Acts 2:41-42a (KJV) Before Jesus ascended, He commissioned His disciples to teach all new believers to observe all things that He had commanded them (Matthew 28:19-20). What things did Jesus want them to share with all other believers? His Words. The things that Jesus had taught, they were to teach to others. There were many other things that Jesus wanted to teach His disciples before He left, but they could not understand because they did not have the Holy Spirit yet. (John 16:12) Jesus understood this and this is why He explained to them in John 14:26 that when the Holy Spirit would come, He would teach them all things and would remind them of the words He had spoken to them. When the Holy Spirit did come, just as Jesus had promised, He reminded them of all that Jesus had taught, as well as teaching them new things that Jesus wanted them to know. The Apostles then taught Jesus words to the church in Jerusalem. These God-given truths were eventually written down in the New Testament, so that we, too, can know and believe them, and do the will of God. We, like them, 20

have the Holy Spirit to explain God s words to us while it is being read or preached. How did the written Word of God come about? We get our answer in 2 Peter Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Peter 1:20-21 (KJV) Hearing and learning God s truth is vital to our spiritual health. The Bible tells us that it is both milk and meat for the believer (1 Peter 2:2; Hebrews 5:12-14). It is through His Word that God speaks to us and we come to know Him more. The more we hear His Word the more our faith grows. (Romans 10:17). Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). The scriptures teach us that God never changes. He remains constant and doesn t change His mind like we do (Numbers 23:19; Malachi 3:6). Therefore we can trust His unchangeable Word. It reflects His good and perfect will for us. God s commands to His Church never change. His Word is just as binding today as it was when the Apostles and prophets first wrote it down. Each believer has the responsibility to know, understand and believe the Word and then to teach others to do likewise. C. They continued in fellowship with other believers 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued stedfastly in fellowship Acts 2:41-42 (KJV) The new believers made friends with other believers and spent time with them. They met as a group separate and apart from the unbelievers. Because they were God s children and indwelt by the Holy Spirit, they were all in close 21

companionship with one another (I John 1:3). Because we are all God children, we too have been separated from the world to live in companionship with one another. However, we should spent time with unbelievers with the purpose of building relationships as a platform to share Christ. D. They "continued" in breaking of bread (observing the Lord s Supper) 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued steadfastly in breaking of bread Acts 2:41-42 (KJV) When the church met together, they remembered Jesus body and blood that was given for their sins (I Corinthians 11:23-26). The meaning of the bread and the wine: The Bread During the Last Supper that Jesus ate with His disciples, Jesus showed them how they could remember His death (Mark 14:22, 23). Jesus took bread, broke it and gave to each disciple a piece. Jesus told them, that after He returned to heaven, they should gather together in this same way. We follow the example of Jesus for observing the Lord s Supper. Jesus took the bread and blessed it and shared it with the disciples that were present with Him, and they ate of it together. Likewise, when we observe the Lord s Supper, we also thank God and are reminded of Jesus body that was given in exchange for us on the cross. The Wine After Jesus gave out the bread, He then took a cup full of wine and told the each to take a drink (Mark 14:23, 24). When they drank the wine, they were to remember Jesus blood that was poured out for their sins. In the same way, we 22

thank God for the cup that reminds us of Jesus blood that was shed for payment of our sins. E. They continued in prayer 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued steadfastly in prayers. Acts 2:41-42 (KJV) The first church in Jerusalem spent time together in prayer to God. When Jesus was on the earth, prayer was a big part of His life. Jesus knew that He needed God's help and guidance in all that He said and did, therefore He spent much time in prayer. (Mark1:35) Before Jesus chose His disciples, He prayed to His father (Luke 6:12,13) Before Jesus was crucified, He prayed in the garden (Mark 14:32-26). If Jesus, who was the Son of God, prayed, then how much more do we need to be praying as individuals, as families, and together as a church? F. They continued loving one another 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. Acts 2:44,45 (KJV) The believers in the church shared with one another, especially with the many poor people who were among them. When we hear how the believers in Jerusalem shared with one another, we could easily think that others should be sharing their possessions with us. We could become covetous. God certainly wants us to respond to the needs of others, however, we should not expect others to provide for us. 23

G. They "continued" praising God 46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Acts 2:46-47 (KJV) The early church also praised God for His forgiveness of their sins, for their eternal life, and for meeting all of their daily needs. H. They "continued" witnessing to others 47 Praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Acts 2:47 (KJV) Every day more people trusted in Jesus as they heard from the believers all He had done, and about all He had done. This also is our responsibility, to be telling others. The Holy Spirit will teach us what to say (Luke 12:12) and at the same time He will open hearts to understand and believe. (Acts 16:14). 24

Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 4 A. Introduction Next we will study in the book of Acts about Peter and John, two of Jesus disciples. The Holy Spirit used Peter and John to write other books of the Bible. B. The lame man healed 1 Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. Acts 3:1 (KJV) Even though God tore the veil in the temple to show that people no longer needed to sacrifice animals, the Jews continued going to the temple. The Bible doesn t tell us what the priests did about the torn veil; possibly they repaired it. Most of the Jewish leaders didn t believe that Jesus was the Son of God or that God had raised Him from the dead. They continued to take animals sacrifices to the temple. Luke, who wrote the book of Acts, tells of a miracle that Jesus did through Peter and John, as they were about to enter the temple. 2 And a certain man lame from his mother s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; 3 Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. 4 And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. 5 And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Acts 3:2-5 (KJV) What do you think that Peter and John would give this man? Food? Money? Clothes? 25

6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. Acts 3:6 (KJV) In whose name and by what power did Peter tell this man to stand up and walk? Peter specifically said, "Jesus Christ of Nazareth". He wanted to be sure the man knew of whom he was speaking. Though people didn't believe that Jesus was the deliverer, they still knew that He had been crucified. What do you think happened next? 7 And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. 8 And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. Acts 3:7,8 (KJV) C. The amazement of the people 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God: 10 And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him. 11 And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon s, greatly wondering. Acts 3:9-11 (KJV) Many people, at the temple, recognized this man, who was jumping up and down, as the one who sat begging year after year at the temple gates. The fact that a miracle had just occurred could not be denied. Only those who were willfully in unbelief could ignore it. D. Peter's accusation 12 And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? 13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was 26

determined to let him go. 14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; 15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. Acts 3:12-15 (KJV) Jesus promised that once the Holy Spirit had come and indwelt His children, that they would become His witnesses. After the man was healed, everyone in the temple gathered around Peter and John, they had a good opportunity to witness about Jesus. Peter accused the people of crucifying Jesus, whom God had sent to be the Deliverer. E. Peter s explanation 16 And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. Acts 3:16 (KJV) Peter made it clear that it was not his power that healed the lame man, but rather, he was healed because Peter and John trusted in the power of Jesus, whom God had raised from the dead. F. Peter s call to repentance 17 And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers. 18 But those things, which God before had showed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. 19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; Acts 3:17-19 (KJV) Then Peter told them that they needed to change their minds about Jesus and trust in Him as their Savior. G. Promise of judgment 22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. 23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, 27

which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. 24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. Acts 3:22-24 (KJV) Peter quoted from the prophets, that all those who reject the Deliverer, will be separated from God and punished forever. H. God's promise to Abraham 25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. Acts 3:25,26 (KJV) Then Peter reminded them, that Jesus' death and resurrection happened just like God promised to Abraham. Forgiveness of sins through Jesus was first offered to the Jews, and after that, to all the people of the world. The Jews were a privileged people. God had chosen them out of all the families of the earth to reveal Himself, He did not choose them because they were deserving of His love and attention; God chose them purely by grace (Deuteronomy 7:7-8). I. Peter and John arrested 1 And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, 2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide. Acts 4:1-3 (KJV) Peter boldly preached this message in the hearing of all the people at the temple. Although God was using Him as His witness. The same religious leaders that condemned Jesus to die were furious when they heard Peter speak. They 28

arrested Peter and John and placed them in prison. J. The response of the people 4 Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. Acts 4:4 (KJV) Even though Peter and John were put into prison, God still used their preaching to show people they were sinners, and many trusted in Jesus as their Savior. K. The question of the court 5 And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes, 6 And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. Acts 4:5,6 (KJV) These were the men that paid Judas to betray Jesus. They also were the ones who convinced Pilate to crucify Jesus. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this? Acts 4:7 (KJV) L. Peter's answer 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, 9 If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; 10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Acts 4:8-11 (KJV) 29

Peter depended upon the indwelling Holy Spirit, therefore making it possible for the Holy Spirit to use Him, and give him the right words to say. We are not to depend upon our own wisdom and strength to do God s will. But, as we depend upon the Holy Spirit, then He will enable us to do what is according to God s will. Paul tells us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. (Philippians 4:13). Peter fearlessly faced the same men who had condemned Jesus to death because he was depending upon the Spirit of God to speak through him, giving him the right words. If we learn God s Word, and depend upon the Holy Spirit, we, too, will be God s witnesses according to His will. Peter refers to Jesus as the cornerstone, who they had rejected. He had become that which is the most important, and given the highest position on earth as well as in heaven. 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12 (KJV) Peter said that Jesus is the only Savior of sinners. M. The Jewish leader's decision Do you think those men who hated and killed Jesus, were won over by Peter and John's answer? No! Even though they were surprised at their boldness they rejected the message. 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. 14 And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. 15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, 16 Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. 17 But that it spread no further among the people, let us 30

straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. 18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. Acts 4:13-18 (KJV) N. Peter and John's answer Before Jesus left, He commanded them to be His witnesses to all people, but now these men were telling them to be quiet and never again tell anyone about Jesus! Who should they obey? God tells us in the Word that we are to obey our rulers (Romans 13:1-4). However, what it the government orders us to disobey God s Word? We should never go against what God says! As we will see from their answer - 19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. 20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. Acts 4:19-20 (KJV) O. Peter and John's release 21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done. 22 For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was showed. Acts 4:21-22 (KJV) P. The church prayed 23 And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. Acts 4:23 (KJV) After being released, they went back to the gathering of believers and reported all. Their response was amazing; instead of complaining or panicking, they reacted with great faith. 24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: 25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine 31

vain things? 26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. 27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. 29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, 30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. Acts 4:24-30 (KJV) After telling the church what had happened, they all prayed together asking that they would not be afraid to keep witnessing about Jesus. It is important to note that their prayer was based on God s Word. They knew what God s Word said and prayed from that perspective. We likewise must learn the scriptures so that we will know what God s will is when we pray. Q. God's answer to their prayers Did God hear them? 31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. Acts 4:31 (KJV) Were Peter and John kept from doing God s will? Did they stop telling others about Jesus? NO! 32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. 33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. Acts 4:32,33 (KJV) 32

Romans 8:28-29 teaches us that nothing can happen to us that God can t handle. Even the most hopeless and painful of situations are commanded by God to do good for those who love and trust in Him. Three beneficial things happened from this experience: 1. Love and unity of the believers was strengthened 2. They learned to live in dependence upon the Holy Spirit 3. God's blessing was upon them 33

Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 5 A. Introduction Even though the believers faced fierce opposition from unbelievers, they faithfully witnessed and the church grew rapidly. As we learned in the previous chapter even in the face of persecution the believers remained strong in their faith and loved each other even more. This lesson will deal with a problem that was even more sinister and potentially more damaging to the young church than even open hostility and the threat of death from those who hated them. The problem didn t come from unbelievers outside the church, but from believers within. Strife and envy are destructive forces that Satan uses to extinguish the church s testimony before men. If we are busy fighting with each other, God s work is hindered because strife and envy produce confusion and every evil work according to James 3:16. B. The disagreement 1 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Acts 6:1 (KJV) There were a lot of widows in the Jerusalem church who had no families to care for them, therefore the church was providing for their daily needs. If they had families, then the church would not have needed to care for them. Family leaders are responsible before God to meet the need of their family members (1 Timothy 5:8). There were 2 kinds of Jews in the Jerusalem church, those who were natives of Palestine and those Jews who were from outside the borders of Palestine. The Grecian Christians began to notice favoritism towards Christian widows who were from Jerusalem and neglect toward Grecian widows. They complained that their widows weren't being cared for as well as the Jewish widows from Jerusalem. 34

The scripture doesn t confirm their suspicions. In actuality, the church was growing so large that it was beyond the scope of the Apostles to oversee every area of the church s ministry. C. The responsibility of the Apostles 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. 3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. Acts 6:2-4 (KJV) It was the Apostles responsibility to teach the people. The Apostles called the believers together and told them what they should do. Notice that it was the responsibility of the Apostles to devote themselves to prayer and teaching God s Word. As important and noble as feeding the hungry was, they knew that they must not let this situation distract them from God s purpose for their lives. Keep in mind that Apostles were the men that Jesus had chosen during His ministry. He trained them and sent them out as His witnesses to teach others. At this time all of the Apostles lived in Jerusalem and they were the church overseers. They would teach truth to those who would then pass it on to others (2 Timothy 2:2). Each believer has the same calling to pray for and teach others. D. The need for Deacons 3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. Acts 6:3 (KJV) Just as the church needs people to teach the Word and pray, sometimes there is also a need for people to collect and distribute gifts for those who are in need. Notice the type of individual that the Apostles were looking for. When 35

considering someone to do a certain task in the church, we should prayerfully consider certain issues: 1. Is the person already functioning in this work? 2. Is the person suitable for the task? 3. Our choice should be based on those character traits that the Apostles stressed in this verse. Each believer should be willing to serve the church. Our Lord himself served us (Mark 10:42-45). If He was willing to serve us, how much more should we be willing to serve each other? E. The choice and recognition of Deacons 5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: 6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. Acts 6:5,6 (KJV) After the church made their selection, the Apostles prayed and asked the Lord to give these men wisdom in their new positions. Then they placed their hands on them to show that they and the church approved of these men as deacons and would support them in their work. F. Many more converted 7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. Acts 6:7 (KJV) Peace and unity was restored to the congregation and we see the prosperity of the church and the fruit of the Gospel (Colossians 1:5-6). Many came to trust Christ 36

because of the testimony of the church. Even many of the priests that were probably wholeheartedly in favor of crucifying the Lord came to believe in Him. God is a loving and gracious God; He forgives and restores to fellowship even those who once hated Him and condemned Him to die. G. Stephen's testimony 8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. Acts 6:8 (KJV) One of the seven men chosen to serve the church was named Stephen. Stephen really trusted in and depended on the Lord for everything, therefore, the Holy Spirit was able to work through him, to demonstrate God's power to the people. H. False accusations against Stephen 9 Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. 10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake. 11 Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God. 12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council, 13 And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: 14 For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us. 15 And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel. Acts 6:9-15 (KJV) Satan could see that God was using Stephen in a mighty way. In order to hinder the work that God was doing through Stephen, he stirred up some men to attack him. While Stephen was debating with some men in the synagogue they became jealous of his wisdom and ability to make his point with the people. They paid evil men to lie about Stephen to discredit him with the people. It worked, they people were appalled by the false accusations against him and demanded that he be judged by the temple council. I. Stephen's defense (Acts 7:1-53) 37

The High Priest asked Stephen if the accusations against him were true (Acts 7:1). Stephen answered by reviewing the history of the Jewish people. They had a poor track record of recognising the truth and often rejected God s spokesperson and even sometimes murdered those sent by God to warn them. Even with the wonderful examples of faith-filled men like Joseph and Moses, the children of Israel failed to trust God and obey His word over and over again. He spoke of how God had chosen Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He told of how Joseph (even though his brothers sold him and rejected him), God was with him and made him governor of Egypt. Joseph, the one that his brothers rejected, was the one that God used to save their lives during the famine. Then came a new generation of Israelites living in bondage in Egypt. Moses tried to help the Israelites, but they rejected him and Moses fled Egypt. However, God was with Moses and sent him back to deliver his people from their slavery in Egypt. Even after their miraculous deliverance from slavery, they continued to reject God and wanted to return to Egypt. When they finally got settled in the Promised Land, they rejected God's rule again and worshipped idols. Many times God sent prophets to warn them, but they rejected God's words given by the prophets. Finally Stephen concluded his message by likening his accusers to the faithless disobedient Jews. Then he said, just as their forefathers rejected and killed many of God s prophets, so these men of whom he was speaking, rejected and killed the very Son of God! J. Stephen's death 54 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. 57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, 58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man s feet, whose name was Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he 38

had said this, he fell asleep. Acts 7:54-60 (KJV) Stephen s words were so full of hard truth that the men were enraged against him. As they stoned Stephen, they left their coats with a young man named Saul who agreed with the killing of Stephen. Our next lesson will focus on this man. Before Stephen died, he saw Jesus standing at His Father's right hand. Jesus knew Stephen was going to be killed, and was waiting for him to leave his body and come and join Him in heaven. When we die, we may not see Jesus standing at God's right hand before we leave our body, but we know that He loves each of us just as much as He loved Stephen. He waits for our arrival in heaven just like He did for Stephen. Notice the love and forgiveness Stephen had for his tormentors. Even while dying he prayed that God would not hold this sin against them. Without even realizing it, Stephen was praying for the man who would probably be the greatest missionary of all time; a man named Saul who would eventually become the Apostle Paul. 39

A. Saul the Persecutor Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 6 1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. 3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison. Acts 8:1-8:3 (KJV) Acts chapter 8 begins with the story of a young Jewish man named Saul. Saul was the one that watched over the coats of the men who stoned Stephen. Saul didn t believe that Jesus was the promised Deliverer, nor did he believe the Christians when they said that God had raised Jesus from the dead. Saul believed that the Christians were deceiving people and believed that Jesus was an imposter, and that He was blaspheming when He called Himself the Son of God. Jesus warned His disciples that the day would come when, whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God a service (John 16:2). Saul thought that he was doing the will of the God, by hunting down and arresting those who perpetrated this terrible hoax" that Jesus was the Messiah. He felt it was his duty to punish and kill all the followers of Jesus of Nazareth. B. The work of the scattered believers 4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word. Acts 8:4 (KJV) As Saul s attack on the Christians began in Jerusalem, many believers escaped Jerusalem and went to live in other regions. Wherever these believers went, they witnessed about Jesus just like He had commanded them. 40

5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. Acts 8:5 (KJV) One of those who left Jerusalem was a man named Philip. He was one of the seven men who were chosen to serve the church (Acts 6:5). Before Jesus returned to the Father, He told the apostles that when the Holy Spirit would come, they would then become His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth. Philip obeyed this command and took the message of the gospel to Samaria. Remember that the Samaritans were the offspring of the foreigners who had intermarried with the Israelites in the Northern Kingdom, after the Assyrians had come and defeated them. The Samaritans later built their own temple, instead of going to the one in Jerusalem. Because of these things, the pure-bred Jews never accepted the Samaritan Jews, for they didn t see them as true Jews. In spite of the centuries of distrust and hatred between the Jews and the Samaritans, Philip obeyed Jesus' command and took the gospel to them anyway, so, that they too could become the children of God. Because of Philip's preaching, many of the Samaritans believed and were saved. 6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city. Acts 8:6-8 (KJV) The Samaritans experienced great joy because they believed the testimony of Philip concerning Jesus. Despite all of the persecution and threats of arrest and execution, the believers continued to trust and obey the command of Jesus. As a result the church grew wherever they went. This only made their enemies more determined to silence them wherever they were found. 41

C. Saul's conversion 1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, 2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. Acts 9:1,2 (KJV) Meanwhile Saul continued to persecute the followers of Jesus in Jerusalem. When Saul realized that many of the believers had left Jerusalem and went to other places proclaiming the message of Jesus he followed and arrested them, and brought them back to Jerusalem to be tried and punished. What an evil man. Do you think it could be possible for such a terrible person to become a Christian? Of all the people that were being saved by the witnessing of the believers, no one would have ever guessed that God would save such an evil person as Saul. He was probably the last person the church ever expected to believe their message. 3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: 4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. 7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. 8 And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink. Acts 9:3-9 (KJV) We must not be afraid to witness to those who speak against God s Word. If they believe, then God can change their hearts, just like He changed Saul s. Luke said that Saul 42

saw Jesus, whose face shone brighter than the sun at midday, and that it blinded Saul and changed his life. Imagine Saul s terror when he learned that the person he was persecuting was the LORD God of Israel. He thought he was pleasing God by persecuting the believers, but now he realized he had been wrong. Saul s conscience had bothered him while he was persecuting the church, but Jesus said he had ignored the pricks that he felt. Now Saul knew the truth and could not deny what he had seen and heard. Jesus really was risen from the dead, He truly was the Son of God and the long promised Deliverer! Blinded Saul was led like a little child by the hand into Damascus. D. Ananias was sent to Saul 10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord. 11 And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth, 12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight. 13 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem: 14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name. Acts 9:10-14 (KJV) Saul was now lying on a bed in Damascus. He was blind and unable to eat or drink for three days. He was not the same man that had persecuted believers in Jerusalem. Ananias was apprehensive, wouldn't you have been? Ananias didn't know that Saul had seen Jesus on the road to Damascus, he only knew about the Saul who tore families apart and had people put to death for trusting in Jesus. 15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: 16 For I 43

will show him how great things he must suffer for my name s sake. Acts 9:15, 16 (KJV) Whenever God asks us to do something that is difficult or even impossible, He always gives us His grace or divine enablement to do it. Usually this grace comes to us as we hear and trust His Word. Ananias heard the words of the Lord encouraging him to be unafraid because Saul was a chosen vessel of the Lord. 17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. 18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. 19 And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. Acts 9:17-19 (KJV) Sometimes we might be like Ananias, afraid to do what the Lord would have us do; but we can trust God, that He will never ask us to do something that isn t for our good and the good of the Church. The remainder of the Book of Acts is mostly focused on Paul (Saul) and how the Lord used him in many different countries to tell folks about Jesus. E. Saul's ministry in Damascus 20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. 21 But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests? 22 But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ. Acts 9:20-22 (KJV) Paul began to meet with the believers in Damascus, as well as witness to his former associates, who still hated Jesus. 44

Saul knew the OT very well, he had studied it under the best Jewish teachers, and he himself was a teacher of the law. Saul reminded the Jews in Damascus of all the prophecies that were foretold of Jesus in the OT. He explained how that Jesus fulfilled all these prophecies. He did this to prove from their own scriptures, that Jesus was the Promised Deliverer. F. Saul's escape 23 And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him: 24 But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him. 25 Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket. Acts 9:23-25 (KJV) Satan must have been rather frustrated and angry about Paul's conversion, because he lost a powerful ally in his war on the saints. He stirred up people to kill Saul. Big thick stone walls surrounded cities during this time, and some people made their houses on top of the wall. Saul was probably lowered down through a believer's window whose house was on the wall. G. Saul returns to Jerusalem 26 And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. 28 And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem. Acts 9:26-28 (KJV) So Saul left Damascus and returned to Jerusalem. He had left Jerusalem a child of Satan and now returned a child of God. He left an enemy of Jesus and the Church, and returned a servant of Jesus and a brother of believers. 45

Saul did not receive a warm welcome by the church in Jerusalem. They were afraid and found it hard to believe that such a wicked person could become a Christian. They thought it was a ruse to gain the confidence of the believers so that he could betray them. God used a special believer named Barnabas to come to Saul s defense. Barnabas, which means Son of Comfort, apparently was gifted by the Holy Spirit to befriend and encourage other believers. We will hear more about Barnabas later. H. Saul's departure to Tarsus 29 And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him. 30 Which when the brethren knew, they brought him down to Caesarea, and sent him forth to Tarsus. Acts 9:29, 30 (KJV) These men were the same ones who had stoned Stephen, now they were planning to kill Saul. Originally, Saul agreed with Stephen s death, but now he was teaching what Stephen had taught. Again the believers helped Saul escape. I. A time of peace and growth for the churches 31 Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied. Acts 9:31 (KJV) Saul, who led the persecution of the church, had now become Jesus trusted servant. At this time, the believers were taught the Word, growing in their understanding of God and strengthened in faith. Many more people trusted in Jesus as their Savior and were baptized and joined the church. 46

Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 7 A. Introduction Although it is true that they were God s chosen people, the Jews took it a step further and saw themselves as superior to other peoples. They felt that they had a special standing with God, due to their practice of circumcision and adherence to the ceremonial laws of the temple. They were proud of their heritage and mistakenly thought that somehow they had earned God s approval. Up until the time of Stephen's death and shortly thereafter, the Apostles had only witnessed to other Jews, Gentiles who had converted to Judaism or Samaritans that recognized Moses and the Law. Even though Jesus had told them to witness to the whole world, they didn't realize that the Gospel was for others who didn't keep the Law of Moses. Anyone who wasn t circumcised and law-keepers, the Jews despised. The Jews who got saved, didn t realize that upon Jesus death and resurrection, circumcision and the law were no longer in effect because Jesus death fully satisfied God s demands and all who trust in Him receive God s acceptance. God no longer required believers to be circumcised. All who accepted Jesus as Savior received the forgiveness of sins, and the Holy Spirit came to live in them whether they were circumcised or not. However, the Apostles didn t know this yet; therefore God had to teach them. B. Cornelius 1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, 2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway. Acts 10:1,2 (KJV) Cornelius was a Roman army captain who was in charge of one hundred soldiers. Cornelius believed in and worshiped 47

God, but he was not circumcised. At this time, most Gentiles worshiped idols, however there were some that were like Cornelius and believed in only one God. These gentiles accepted the teaching of the Jews in the Synagogues, but they weren't ready to become Jews by being circumcised. C. God's instructions to Cornelius Do you remember God s promise to Abraham regarding all the nations of the earth? It was now time for this promise to come true. God wanted the news of the Savior to be preached to those who weren t Jewish. (Acts 10:3-6) 3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius. 4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God. 5 And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter: 6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do. Acts 10:3-6 (KJV) Peter stayed with Simon who was a tanner. A tanner skinned dead animals and prepared their skins to be used as clothing and other accessories. Jewish tanners were often considered low on the social scale and were often treated like outcasts even though they may be devout. Their close contact with dead animals forced them to often live and conduct their business outside of town. It appears that God was already preparing Peter s heart regarding accepting people outside of the Jewish faith as candidates for hearing the gospel. It was a hurdle for Peter who was raised a strict Jew to humble himself and be a guest of a fellow believer who was a tanner. D. Cornelius' response 7 And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually; 8 And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa. Acts 10:7-8 (KJV) 48

Cornelius immediately obeyed the Lord. He was hungry to know the truth and he wasted no time sending two servants to fetch Peter at Joppa. E. The Lord's preparation of Peter The Lord prepared Cornelius, but now He had to prepare Peter so that he would be willing to go into the house of a Gentile, eat his food and teach him the word. Normally, Jews would never do something like this. 9 On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: 10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, 11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: 12 Wherein were all manner of four-footed beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. 14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean. 15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. 16 This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven. Acts 10:9-16 (KJV) Peter did not want to eat the animals that God had shown him in the vision because the Jews had been given commands by God regarding what animals they could and could not eat. Some of the animals in the vision, Jews could eat, but, because they were mixed in with those that they couldn t eat Peter refused to eat them. 49

Peter had been taught to eat only those animals that were raised and butchered properly according to Old Testament law (Leviticus 11). He had been taught to turn away from any food that was contaminated or was unclean according to scripture. Think of eating an animal that is not naturally considered edible. For example, in some cultures to eat a pet is considered so repulsive that laws forbid such a thing. This is how Peter felt when he was commanded by God to kill and eat. What was God trying to teach Peter? 1. That God s food laws were now abolished because of Christ s death on the cross. 2. Just as all the animals were considered clean by God and were together, so Jews or Gentiles who trust in Jesus are considered clean and will be together in one church. 3. God had cleansed all believers. Neither Peter nor any other Jew should ever call another believer unclean or consider him or her to be spiritually inferior. F. Peter went to Cornelius' home 17 Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon s house, and stood before the gate, 18 And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there. 19 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. 20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them. 21 Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come? 22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee. 23 Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him. Acts 10:17-23 (KJV) 50

Peter didn t understand everything that God was doing at this time, however he trusted God and went to the home of Cornelius. G. Peter in the home of Cornelius 24 And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends. 25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. 26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man. Acts 10:24-26 (KJV) Cornelius gathered all of his family and friends to hear the news That Peter would bring. Cornelius in his ignorance fell at Peter s feet and worshipped him, however, Peter would not allow anyone to worship him, for only God should be worshiped. H. Peter's message 34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. 36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) 37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. 39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40 Him God raised up the third day, and showed him openly; 41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. Acts 10:34-43 (KJV) 51

Peter preached to Cornelius and his family and friends the simple message of Jesus. He didn t try to convert them to a religion, but he plainly explained the life, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. As he spoke, the Holy Spirit did a remarkable thing, He opened hearts to believe. I. Conversion of the first Gentiles 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, 47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. Acts 10:44-48 (KJV) Suddenly Cornelius and all those present knew that God was holy and they were sinners. They also knew that God had promised to send a Savior for sinners. While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit opened these Gentiles to understand that Jesus was the promised Deliverer who came to save them from their sins. To the amazement of the other believers that accompanied Peter to Cornelius house, Cornelius and his family believed Peter s words, and trusted in Jesus as their Savior even before Peter was finished speaking! When these people trusted in Jesus, the Holy Spirit came upon them and enabled them to speak in languages that they had never learned, just like on the day of Pentecost. God allowed them to speak in tongues like this so that Peter and the onlooking Jews would have no doubt that the Holy Spirit had come upon them, therefore showing that God accepts them just like He did the Jews. There is only one other mention of people actually speaking in tongues in the Bible, and that is when a group of Old Testament saints (John the Baptist s disciples) believed in Jesus in Acts

Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 8 A. Introduction In the last lesson we saw the Holy Spirit teach Peter that God accepts Gentiles on the basis of the atonement of Jesus Christ alone. The Holy Spirit had proved to Peter and those present that converting to Judaism was not a requirement to becoming a Christian. The Jewish Christians were proud of their heritage and could not believe that God had made redemption possible to those who were pagans without first requiring that they convert to Judaism. They probably thought that Peter had overstepped his authority. Surely they were in agreement that he should have checked with the leaders in Jerusalem before doing such a repulsive thing as preach the gospel directly to Gentiles! Peter had a teachable spirit. He was willing to be taught by God s Spirit even when the lessons seemed to contradict all that he had learned as a Jewish boy. B. Disapproval of Peter's action from Jerusalem 1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. 2 And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, 3 Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them. Acts 11:1-3 (KJV) The only reason that Peter went to Cornelius' house was because of the vision. God showed that if He accepts the Gentiles, so, must Peter. However, the Apostles and rest of the church in Jerusalem had not seen the vision. Therefore they couldn't understand why Peter would go to the house of a Gentile and eat with them. There was a certain group of Jews in the church that very much-opposed Peter's action (vs.2). They were Christian Jews who believed that Jesus was the Deliverer, but they also believed they had to keep circumcision and the commandments. Some of these Jews caused problems for the church later on. 53

C. Peter's explanation and its acceptance 4 But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying, Acts 11:4 (KJV) Peter met with the church leadership to explain why he did what he did. 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. 16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. 17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God? Acts 11:15-17 (KJV) Then Peter explained about the vision and what had happened in Cornelius house. He reminded them of the Lord s own words and that God is God and it is foolish to argue with Him. 18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life. Acts 11:18 (KJV) When they had all heard about God's acceptance of the Gentiles, in spite of their being uncircumcised, they accepted them also. D. The ministry of the scattered believers Luke now begins to tell more about the work of those who were scattered during the time of Stephen s stoning. 19 Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only. 20 And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus. Acts 11:19-20 (KJV) When the Jewish Christians scattered, they ministered only to other Jews with the gospel. Keep in mind that Greek was the main language spoken in the countries that were under the rule of the Roman Empire. Most of the Jews who lived 54

outside of Jerusalem, spoke Greek as well. These Greek speaking Jews began to tell the Gentiles about the Deliverer, and many of the Gentiles were like Cornelius who believed in Jesus. They knew that God had promised to send the Deliverer. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord. Acts 11:21 (KJV) E. Barnabas in the Church at Antioch 22 Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church, which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. 23 Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. 24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord. Acts 11:22-24 (KJV) This was the first large group of Gentiles to believe on Jesus. The stunned Jerusalem church sent Barnabas to check and see if the report they had heard was true. This was that same Barnabas who became Paul's friend after he returned to Jerusalem. He was well respected in the Jerusalem church. They also sent Barnabas to make sure that this new church was following all of the teachings that were given by Jesus. Today, it is still important for churches to believe and follow the teaching of the Apostles. Each new generation of believers is responsible, not only to learn the truth of God s Word, but to hand it down to others without adding or subtracting from it. It is an awesome responsibility that we must not take lightly. F. Saul in the church at Antioch 25 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: 26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. Acts 11:25,26 (KJV) While Barnabas was teaching in Antioch, he remembered Saul, and thought that it would be good for him to help with the teaching there. 55

The word Christian means Christ's people or followers of Christ. The Antioch believers were dead to self, trusting, and obedient followers of Jesus that people noticed they resembled Christ and named them Christians. It is a great honor to be called a Christian. G. James killed, and Peter Imprisoned 1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. 2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. Acts 12:1,2 (KJV) After Paul was saved, the church enjoyed peace for a time, (Acts 9:31) but this time came to an end. This King Herod, was the grandson, of the King Herod that had tried to kill Jesus when he was a baby. James was the first of Jesus' apostle's to be killed. When Jesus was on earth, He warned James and the other Apostles that some of them would be killed for testifying of Him. (Luke 11:49) The Jewish leaders were delighted that Herod had killed James. For they were envious that so many Jews believed on Jesus. Strangely, what made them the most upset was Jews convincing Gentiles, that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob would accept them, by faith in Christ alone. 3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) 4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. Acts 12:3,4 (KJV) Because Herod wanted the praise of the Jewish leaders, he sent men to capture and arrest Peter. It s interesting to read of Herod s end in Acts 12:

5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. Acts 12:5 (KJV) The believers did the only thing they could do; they prayed. They continued in prayer asking God to deliver Peter. Although the prison walls were made of thick stone and the doors of iron they are no match for God s great power. The believer s knew that humanly speaking, escape was impossible for Peter. They knew the prisoners were not only chained to guards, there were other guards positioned at the gates to make sure that the prisoners didn't escape. Could God rescue Peter? Peter s future was bleak. No one could escape the powerful Roman government s justice, or could they? In Matthew 19:26 Jesus said, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible and the disciples knew this so they prayed without ceasing for Peter. H. The Lord delivered Peter There isn't anything that God can't do. The God that delivered Israel from Egypt, led them through the Red Sea, fed them manna, and gave them water from the rock to drink for 40 years, could also deliver Peter from a Roman prison. 6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. 7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. 8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. 9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. 10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him. 11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out 57

of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. Acts 12:6-11 (KJV) Why would God send an Angel to rescue Peter, but allow Stephen, and James to be killed? Did God love Peter more than the others? No, God doesn't love any of His children more than another, in His eyes we are all favorites. He loves all of His children very much. He loved us so much that He chose to die on the cross rather than live without us for eternity! If God loves us all the same then why did God save Peter and not Stephen or James? Was it because the church prayed for Peter and not Stephen and James? No, I'm sure the church prayed for James also. When people are sick and we pray for them, sometimes they get well, and sometimes God does not heal them. However God decides to work things out in our lives we can be assured of His love and His wisdom, and therefore, whatever He decides for us, will be the best for us. (Rom. 8:28, 25) We cannot dictate to God what He should do. He is our Master and we must accept His will, knowing that God loves and always does what is right for His children. God may have allowed Herod to kill James for His work for him here on earth was done. On the other hand, He may have had Peter released for his work here wasn t done. Despite this seeming confusion, God does hear our prayers and invites us to ask of Him impossible things (Jeremiah 33:3). He desires that His children be involved with Him here on earth and one of those ways is through prayer. Praying in accordance with God s will is a learning experience. As we come to know Him through His word, we will know more and more His will for our lives and will pray more in agreement with Him. (John 16:24). I. The praying church 12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. 13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. 14 And when she knew Peter s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before 58

the gate. 15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. 16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished. 17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go show these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place. Acts 12:12-17 (KJV) Peter told the believers to tell James and the other leaders in the Jerusalem church how the Lord had rescued him. This man named James was not the same James that Herod had put to death; he was the son of Mary and Joseph and therefore was Jesus half brother. James became the leader of the Jerusalem church after Peter had left to work in other places. The Holy Spirit directed James to write one of the books of the Bible, which we will study later. 59

Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 9 A. Introduction Before Jesus returned to heaven, He promised the apostles that the Holy Spirit would come, and then they would become His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the uttermost ends of the earth. So far, we have seen how the Holy Spirit used the believers in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria. Now, we will read how the Holy Spirit used Saul and his friends to take the gospel to other countries surrounding Israel. 1 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. Acts 13:1 (KJV) This story begins in Antioch where Saul and Barnabas and others were teaching the new church. Some of those teaching in Antioch were prophets and some were teachers. Prophets were unique teachers; they received direct teaching from God through the Holy Spirit rather than through natural means such as being taught by man or books. They were men and women to whom the Holy Spirit would give the teachings which the Lord wanted His children to know. People could only be a prophet if chosen by the Lord. Some of the things that the Holy Spirit made known to prophets were messages to certain individuals often giving that person special revelation about future events. (For example, the Prophet Agabus in Acts 21:10, 11 predicted that Paul would someday be arrested by the Jews in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans). The Holy Spirit also used the prophets to warn the people of their sin. 60

When prophets spoke God s message to the church, the Holy Spirit guided them to say exactly what God wanted. To be chosen as a prophet was a high calling. An interesting scripture: Deuteronomy 18: The things that God revealed to the apostles and prophets for the whole church to know are now written in the New Testament as God s message to us. All that God wants us to know as His children is in the Bible. What then was the purpose of teachers in the church? They taught the church the Old Testament scriptures and whatever new teachings the Lord gave to the apostles and prophets. God does not show us new things for He doesn't have any new things to teach His children. All that He wants His children to know is now written in His Word. This does not mean that God no longer speaks to us today, because He does as we read His Word. The Holy Spirit takes the written word and applies it to our particular set of circumstances or condition. He guides us to trust and take action in response to what He says to us through His Word. God will never contradict His Word. Whatever He says to your heart must be backed up with sound doctrine. This is why thorough Bible study is so important to a new believer. To avoid being deceived by false teachers, a believer needs to be diligent to search the scriptures to see if these things be so (Acts 17:11). In 1 John 4:1, John warns us not to be gullible, but to test the spirits to see if they are of God. What is presently being taught in the church is what God has plainly said in and through His Word. God also wants believers like ourselves to learn His Word so that we may become teachers like the men in Antioch. Each believer has a part to play in the growth and nurturing of the church. Men have been given the responsibility of overseeing the church and teaching all the members of the church. God has also given a unique calling to the women to teach the younger 61

women and children. (Titus 2:3-5). An interesting verse to ponder is: 1 Timothy 2:12. B. Barnabas and Paul called to missionary service 2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. 3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. 4 So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. Acts 13:2-4 (KJV) While the church at Antioch was worshipping God, the Holy Spirit spoke and instructed them to send out Barnabas and Saul to preach the gospel to those who had never heard. So the church gathered together and the leaders laid their hands on Barnabas and Saul to show that the whole church approved of them going forth to teach others of Jesus. By doing so they were saying that they would pray for and support them in their work. This work that the Holy Spirit called them to do wasn t just their work, but was also the work of the entire church in Antioch. Saul and Barnabas were representing the church. The Holy Spirit still calls believers to serve Him in this way. Whether a believer is called to go or stay, each has a part to play in the mission of the church. Those that go are still a part of the local body of believers and are dependent upon the support and prayers of the church. Those left behind have a privilege of praying for and supporting those that are sent. (Matthew 9:37,38). C. Barnabas and Saul in Cyprus 4 So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. 5 And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister. Acts 13:4,5 (KJV) 62

Sailing from Antioch, Saul and Barnabas landed on the Island of Cyprus, which was Barnabas' homeland. In the town of Salamis on Cyprus, they taught in the synagogues. Although Saul and Barnabas were sent to take the gospel to Gentiles, they most often went into the synagogues first and offered it to the Jews before teaching others. They did this because God first called the Jews to be His special people, and gave to them the promises of the Deliverer. The synagogues were an excellent place to begin teaching because the Jews in the synagogues knew the Old Testament and God's promises to send the Deliverer. However what they didn't know was that the Deliverer had already come. They didn't know that Jesus of Nazareth, whom their leaders had crucified, was the true Messiah who God had promised throughout the Old Testament would come. These Jews on Cyprus had probably heard that a man named Jesus had been crucified on the cross. However, they hadn t understood that He had risen from the dead, and was now seated at God s right hand, and that He was really the Deliverer that God had promised to send. Barnabas and Saul testified of Jesus resurrection. Keep in mind that Saul had seen Jesus on the road to Damascus after He had risen from the dead. Barnabas and Saul s pattern of evangelism was to enter the synagogue of a town and worship with the Jews there. After the reading of the law they were often invited to address the congregation (Acts 13:15). It was then that they reasoned with the Jews about who Christ was and how He had brought salvation to all that would believe. They would remind the people of the prophecies regarding the coming Deliverer. Afterward they would show them how Jesus fulfilled all these prophecies. It wasn't only the Jews who would come to meetings in the synagogues. Gentiles like Cornelius also came. These Gentiles loved and worshipped God. They knew the teachings of the Old Testament and the prophecies regarding the coming 63

Deliverer and they believed it. Most of them weren't willing to become Jews by being circumcised, but they believed the teaching of the Old Testament. Of all the people who heard Saul and Barnabas in the synagogue, the Gentiles were often the most receptive. John Mark, who went with Saul and Barnabas to help them, was not the apostle John but was a relative of Barnabas'. Finally, Barnabas, Saul and Mark left Salamis and traveled on to Paphos. Upon arriving on Paphos, Luke, who wrote Acts, no longer calls Saul by his Jewish name, but changes to his Roman name, Paul. 13 Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem. Acts 13:13 (KJV) Upon their arrival in Perga, young John Mark left them and went home to Jerusalem. We are not told why he left, however later we discover that was not pleased and was not willing to take John Mark on his next mission trip despite Barnabas appeal on his behalf (Acts 15:36-38). Later on, Paul changed toward Mark and requested that he visit him when he was imprisoned in Rome awaiting execution. (2 Timothy 4:11). D. Barnabas and Paul in Antioch in Pisidia 14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. Acts 13:14 (KJV) They left Perga and went North to another large city, which was also called Antioch. 15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. 16 Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience. Acts 13:

In Antioch, they again went first into the Synagogue. As before, Paul taught from the Old Testament reminding the people of God s promises to send the Deliverer. Then he told them that God fulfilled His promise by sending Jesus of Nazareth as the Deliverer, but that the Jews and their leaders did not accept Jesus as the Deliverer and crucified and buried Him. However, on the third day, God raised Him from the dead. Now through Him, all who trust in Jesus can receive the forgiveness of their sins and be accepted by God. Acts 13:32-33,38-39: 32 And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, 33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. Acts 13:32,33 (KJV) 38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: 39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. Acts 13:38,39 (KJV) Paul told them that they will never be accepted by God through keeping the law. Why? Because no one can keep it. Through faith in Jesus' death and resurrection, all believers are forgiven, given a new nature, and accepted completely before God. 42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. 43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. 44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. 65

Acts 13:42-47 (KJV) Before Jesus was sent into the world He knew that few Israelites would accept Him. But God had planned that the gospel would go to the Gentiles so that they too could be forgiven for their sins. He had promised Abraham that through him all the families of the earth would be blessed, not just the Jewish family (Genesis 12:3). Verse 43 tells us that some were encouraged to continue in the grace of God. 49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region. 50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. 51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost. Acts 13:49-52 (KJV) Sadly, most Jews refused to believe in Jesus as the Deliverer. They thought that their Jewish heritage and their own efforts to obey the law would make them acceptable to God. However, many of the Gentiles realized their sinfulness and hopelessness without Christ. They knew that their only hope was to trust in Jesus as their Savoir. Paul and Barnabas were not affected by the Jew s rejection of the gospel. They were enjoying a non-circumstantial walk in the Spirit. Although they were saddened by the hardness of the Jewish hearts that they encountered, they did not allow their emotions or circumstance to determine their course nor affect their walk with God. God s truth was the ruling force in their attitude and decisions. They trusted God with the situation and shook the dust from their feet and moved on with God s plan for their lives. E. Barnabas and Paul in Iconium, Lystra and Derbe 1 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews 66

and also of the Greeks believed. 2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren. 3 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands. 4 But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles. 5 And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them, 6 They were aware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about: 7 And there they preached the gospel. 8 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother s womb, who never had walked: 9 The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed, 10 Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked. 11 And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men. 12 And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker. 13 Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people. Acts 14:1-13 (KJV) There is no mention of a synagogue in Lystra or Derbe. These cities were Gentile cities and the people worshipped idols. They hadn't been taught about the only true and living God of the Jews. Paul spoke boldly in the Lord and gave testimony of the word of His grace. When people saw the miracles that Paul had done they thought that two of their gods had come down to visit them. Therefore one of their priests had oxen brought to sacrifice to them. 14 Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out, Acts 14:14 (KJV) 67

At first Paul and Barnabas didn t know what was happening but once they realized what was going on, they ripped their clothes to show that they were grieving or not pleased by this. Paul and Barnabas ripped their clothes and ran out into the middle of them shouting. 15 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: 16 Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. 17 Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness. 18 And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them. Acts 14:15-18 (KJV) F. Barnabas and Paul returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch in Pisidia 21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, 22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Acts 14:21-22 (KJV) Afterward they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch in Pisidia to teach the new believers more about God and their new life as Christians. They encouraged the new church to continue on in the faith and told them to expect hardship and persecution as a result of being a child of God. (I Peter 2:21) 23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. Acts 14:23 (KJV) 68

Paul and Barnabas appointed men to be elders in each of the churches that they had started. These men were responsible to teach and oversee the churches, just like the apostles did in Jerusalem and Paul and Barnabas did in Antioch. The work of being an elder is an important work. Church elders must be men who have been equipped, prepared and are controlled by the Holy Spirit. A new believer or one who is spiritually immature can do much harm to a church, so God is very clear that only men who are mature in their faith and manifest the fruit of the Spirit should be appointed to such places of responsibility. For further study of the qualifications of elders please prayerfully read, Titus 1:5-9 and 1 Timothy 3:1-7. G. Barnabas and Paul returned home 24 And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia. 25 And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia: 26 And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled. 27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. 28 And there they abode long time with the disciples. Acts 14:24-28 (KJV) Paul and Barnabas returned to the church in Antioch that had sent them, reporting what the Holy Spirit had done through them. As the Holy Spirit uses us to share His wonderful message of grace with others, we can also share with the rest of the church what the Lord is doing as a great source of encouragement to everyone. 69

Acts For Growing New Believers ~ Lesson 10 A. Paul and Barnabas plan to revisit their converts 35 Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also. 36 And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do. Acts 15:35,36 (KJV) After returning home for awhile, Paul and Barnabas once again planned to return and visit those churches that they had planted on their first journey. They wanted to visit them in order to give them further teaching and guidance. Just like a mother would not leave her newborn to fend for itself, so new believers must be cared for also. The work of caring for new believers is a very important work of the church. Not only do new believers need to be taught, but also all believers. This responsibility will mainly fall on the shoulders of the church leadership. The work of the Elders is important and there is much to be done. Elders teach and counsel, as well as visit individuals in their homes. They are to be godly examples that watch for the souls of the flock (Hebrews 13:7 & 17) As a local church reaches out to the surrounding community with the gospel, and people are saved, it will also be our responsibility as members of that body to provide them with the further teaching and training that they need. 37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark. 38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. Acts 15:37,38 (KJV) John Mark who went with Paul and Barnabas on their first journey but had abandoned them and returned home, now became a point of contention. Paul did not want to take him with them, however Barnabas insisted that they take him. 70

39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus; Acts 15:39 (KJV) Barnabas could not leave Mark. Barnabas was known in the church as the son of encouragement ; he was gifted by the Holy Spirit to take those who were rejected or friendless under his wing and restore them. When the church first met Paul they were suspicious and he was not fully trusted until Barnabas befriended him and convinced the church that Paul was indeed a brother in the Lord. Despite this sharp disagreement between them God used Mark to be a great blessing to Paul later on in his life (2 Tim. 4:11). B. Paul returns to the churches in Syria, Cilicia, and Galatia 40 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God. Acts 15:40 (KJV) Silas, one of the leaders in the Jerusalem church, became Paul's companion. This represents a wise principle that our Lord taught His disciples. When He sent his disciples out to preach and heal in His name, He sent them out in pairs (Mark 6:7). Having a partner to minister with is a gift from the Lord. 41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches. Acts 15:41 (KJV) The Bible doesn't really tell us how these churches in Cilicia and Syria got started but it was probably by Paul when he was a new believer and had left Jerusalem to return home. 1 Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek: 2 Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium. 3 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in 71

those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek. Acts 16:1-3 Why did Paul have Timothy circumcised? Was it because Paul thought it necessary in order for God to accept Timothy? No, it was so that the Jews would accept him and allow him to enter the synagogue and assist Paul in his teaching there. If Timothy was not circumcised, then the Jews would never accept him or Paul s message. As Christians, there are many things that we do or refrain from doing not so that God will accept us, but so that others will not be offended. 4 And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem. 5 And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily. Acts 16:4,5 (KJV) After Paul, Silas, and Timothy left Derbe and Lystra, they visited other churches in that area. C. Paul's call and journey to Macedonia 6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, 7 After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. 8 And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. Acts 16:6 through Acts 16:8 (KJV) After they had visited all the churches in that area, they planned to take the gospel to other countries nearby. There were many people throughout Asia who had not yet heard the gospel, so Paul decided to go, however this was not the Lord s will for him. The Holy Spirit was sent to indwell all believers to enable us to take the gospel to the entire world. Although the Lord has commanded us to take the gospel to all 72

people, we still need to depend upon the Holy Spirit for His leading and direction, to guide us to the right people at the right time. Therefore, we should always be looking to Him for His will and directions. We should be looking for an opportunity to take the Gospel to all people, but at the same time depending upon the Holy Spirit to show us where we should go. Why would the Lord stop Paul from going to these? Didn t the Lord love these people? Yes, He did. Later the gospel was taken to the people of Asia. The Bible is not clear as to why the Holy Spirit stopped them from going at this time. God doesn t always give us the reasons for the things that He does. We are called to trust him, not to question Him. When we insist that God explain Himself, we are really showing that we don t trust Him. We should trust and obey Him at all times, even when we don t understand why. Because they were depending upon the Holy Spirit to guide them, He did. This is how He showed them: 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. Acts 16:9 (KJV) God didn't always guide Paul by visions, and He probably won't give you a vision to show you either, though He can if He wants to. God didn't give the person who led you to trust Christ a vision either. God often leads His children by speaking to them as they read His Word, then as they talk to Him about it, He places in their hearts a desire to do, even if they have no idea how or why. After Paul saw the vision he immediately went to Macedonia. 10 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them. 11 Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis; 12 And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we 73

were in that city abiding certain days. Acts 16:10-12 (KJV) From this point on Luke writes as if he is included with Paul and the others. After their arrival in Troas the four of them traveled to Philippi. D. Paul's work at Philippi The conversion of Lydia 13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither. 14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. 15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us. Acts 16:13-15 (KJV) There doesn't appear to have been a synagogue in Philippi, however, when Paul heard that there was a group of Jewish women who gathered near the river for prayer to God, he met with them. He met a businesswoman named Lydia. The Lord opened her heart as Paul talked and she believed all that he testified concerning Jesus and was saved. Her response was genuine and complete. Immediately she desired to be used by God as a blessing to Paul. She offered her home and hospitality to meet their needs. It is important we all realize that no matter where we are in our Christian walk we can have significant impact on those around us. She was a new Christian yet she was willing to be a blessing to those around her. Lydia was a great help to Paul and the new church in Philippi by simply letting God show love to others through her. 74

Paul casts out demon 16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: 17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which show unto us the way of salvation. 18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. Acts 16:16-18 (KJV) At first, things went well in Philippi, but then trouble came. A young woman who was possessed by a demon began to interfere with Paul s ministry there. In the name of Jesus, Paul commanded the evil spirit to come out of the woman, which clearly revealed that Jesus had authority over the spirits. 19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, 20 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, 21 And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. 22 And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. 23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: 24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. Acts 16:19-24 (KJV) The men who were making money from the girl became furious with Paul over their loss of future income. They had no pity for this girl and were only concerned with their selfish gain. They brought charges against Paul and Silas. The magistrates beat them and ordered the jailer to put them in stocks and make sure that they did not escape. 75

It looked like Satan was more powerful than Jesus but God had a reason for permitting this. Had Satan known this he would have no doubt left them alone and hoped that they left Philippi soon. The Philippian Jailer's conversion Paul and Silas had been whipped and now their backs were bleeding. What do you think Paul and Silas did? They could have really gotten downhearted and discouraged about it. Who would blame them if they complained to God and hated their persecutors? 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. Acts 16:25 (KJV) They weren t discouraged at all, but rather were praising God for the opportunity to serve and to suffer for His sake! They trusted God that He must have had a good reason for allowing them to suffer. Nothing comes into our lives without purpose. When we don t understand what He s doing, God wants us to trust Him and to believe in the promises of His love and that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Heb. 13:5). God didn't abandon Paul and Silas and soon they saw the reason for the suffering, which they endured. 26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one s bands were loosed. 27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. Acts 16:26, 27 (KJV) The keeper of the prison was going to kill himself, for it was his responsibility to take care of all the prisoners and see that none escape. Paul knew what he was about to do and called out to the man. 76

28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. Acts 16:28 (KJV) Even though this man was keeping them in prison, they still loved him and wanted to see him turn to Christ. Remember what Jesus said when He was nailed on the cross (Luke 23:34)? 29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, 30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? Acts 16:29,30 (KJV) Paul and Silas must have already been talking with this man, and the Holy Spirit convicting him of his need to be saved. Paul answered him like this. 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Acts 16:31 (KJV) 32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. Acts 16:32 (KJV) Paul didn't just give the man some short answer. He carefully explained the Word of God to this man and to all that lived in His house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. 34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house. Acts 16:33, 34 (KJV) Do you remember how Lydia, after she had believed, wanted to show kindness to Paul and Silas? Here we see evidence that this man truly believed Paul s message about Jesus. He ministered to Paul and Silas wounds, followed the Lord s command to be baptized, and finally took them into his own home and cared for their needs. 77

Paul and Silas released from prison 35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go. 36 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace. 37 But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out. 38 And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans. 39 And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city. 40 And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed. Acts 16:35-40 (KJV) 78

Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 11 A. From Philippi to Athens 1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: Acts 17:1 (KJV) After God delivered Paul and Silas from prison, they left Philippi with Timothy and Luke and traveled to other cities to preach. 2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, 3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. 4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. Acts 17:2-4 (KJV) When they arrived in Thessalonica, Paul went to teach in the synagogue. 10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few. Acts 17:10-12 (KJV) Even though some people in Thessalonica believed, the majority rejected God s love and they planned to imprison Paul and Silas. They may have even killed them, but the believers helped them escape. The Bereans were more willing to accept Paul's teaching than the Thessalonians. The Bereans would listen to Paul's message, and then would study the Word to see if it was really true. 79

When the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people. 14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still. 15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed. Acts 17:13-15 (KJV) The Bereans really wanted to hear, so they were studying the Word on their own to see if Jesus was really the Savior. Satan wasn't pleased with their enthusiasm and began to incite hardhearted men against them. B. Paul's message in Athens While Paul was waiting in Athens for Silas and Timothy to come, he walked around the city. As Paul walked around the city, he became disturbed as he saw temples and idols which the people worshiped. These were the gods of the Athenians. They prayed to and worshiped gods that had ears, but couldn t hear, and eyes, but couldn t see (Psalm 115:4-8). Paul was very concerned for these people who were so deceived by Satan, and it wasn t long before God gave the opportunity to talk with them about the only True God and His provision for their sins. 16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. 17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. 18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. 19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is? 20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would 80

know therefore what these things mean. 21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.) 22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. 23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. 24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshipped with men s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. 29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man s device. 30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent: 31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. Acts 17:16-31 (KJV) What was the result of Paul's teaching? Did these gentiles believe God's word? 32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter. 33 So Paul departed from among them. 34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them. Acts 17:32-34 (KJV) C. From Athens to Corinth 1 After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth; Acts 18:1 (KJV) 81

After leaving Athens, Paul then traveled down to Corinth, where he already once had preached the gospel. 9 Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: 10 For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city. Acts 18:9-10 (KJV) The Lord knows everything even before it happens. He knows who will believe and who will reject His word. We don't know who will believe and who will reject, so we need to tell everyone trusting the Holy Spirit to lead to those whose hearts are already prepared to hear the truth. When Paul knew the Lord wanted him to spend some extra time in Corinth, he settled down and taught all that would listen. 11 And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them. Acts 18:11 (KJV) This was the second time that Paul had traveled around preaching the gospel. Paul remained at Corinth eighteen months and then traveled on to Ephesus. 19 And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not; 21 But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus. Acts 18:19-21 (KJV) From Ephesus Paul went to Ceasarea, then to Jerusalem, and then returned home to Antioch. 22 And when he had landed at Caesarea, and gone up, and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch. Acts 18:22 (KJV) 82

Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 12 A. Paul s 3rd missionary journey begins Paul knew that God wanted all people to hear the gospel, therefore he did not settle down in Antioch. His greatest desire was to take the gospel to those who have never heard. This should be a desire of every Christian. Paul left Antioch again, and set out on his 3rd journey. 23 And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples. Acts 18:23 (KJV) Again Paul returned to the churches where he had taught previously. We all need to be continually reminded of God's teaching in the word, so, that our faith and trust in Him will also grow. B. Paul's ministry in Ephesus 8 And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God. 9 But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus. 10 And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. Acts 19:8-10 (KJV) After Paul taught the Word in Galatia and Phrygia, he came to Ephesus. Again God demonstrated His power through Paul. Upon arriving in Ephesus, Paul first went to teach in the Jewish synagogue. Some places Paul stayed for only a short time, and others he stayed longer, depending upon their responses. We should do the same when we take the gospel to other places. If people refuse to believe the word that we are teaching them, 83

then we should leave them and move on to those who are more receptive, or have never heard. 11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: 12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. Acts 19:11,12 (KJV) God used His apostles to begin the building of the church, and to finish writing His Word. God told them what He wanted them to teach, and led them to write it down preserving it for all generations to come. God also gave them power to do miracles, as proof that their message was from God. However today there are no apostles and the Bible is complete! We don't need miracles to prove the message! God hasn't changed; He is still able to do the same miracles today that He did then. During Paul's time in Ephesus, he wrote a letter to the church at Corinth, he had heard that they were disobedient to the word, and wanted to learn. This letter is now part of the New Testament, and we will study it later. The Jewish vagabond exorcists error 13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. 14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. Acts 19:13-17 (KJV) God used this to show everyone, that Paul is a true servant of Jesus, and that he had received power over Satan and the demons. 84

Also Jesus' name isn't something to speak casually or take lightly. His name is above all names and it is a serious matter to speak the name of Jesus (Philippians 2:10, 11). Only those who are true children of God have the right to call on Jesus name or to speak it with authority. These men wrongly assumed that it was like a magic incantation and that it could be used at the whim of the speaker. God quickly taught them the truth that He is a great King and should be feared above all else (Psalm 47:9). The burning of books of magic. 18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and showed their deeds. 19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed. Acts 19:18-20 (KJV) Again we see the power of the Holy Spirit working through the lives of those who believe. Just as Lydia and the Philippian jailer displayed a change of heart after they believed so the Ephesian believers did also. Many of the people in Ephesus practiced magic for healing and cursing people, but when they became believers, they turned away from all this and burned their books. It s sinful for God's children to trust in anything other than God himself. As God's children, we are in God's care and don't need to be dependent upon the things that Satan s children are dependent upon. The riot 23 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way. 24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen; Acts 19:23, 24 (KJV) At this time Paul had been in Ephesus for about two and a half years. Many miracles had been done, and many had come to the Lord. Satan didn't like what 85

was happening there, and they tried to stir up some trouble for Paul and the church. 25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth. 26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands: 27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. 28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. 29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre. 30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not. Acts 19:25-30 (KJV) The Ephesians had built a big temple for their goddess Diana. Demetrius was one of many silversmiths who would make small silver images of Diana and sell them. Since Paul had been preaching, gradually fewer people worshipped Diana; Demetrius and his friends feared that their sales would decrease. They cared more about money than the good that God had done for the Ephesians. C. Paul ministered in Macedonia and Greece 1 And after the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the disciples, and embraced them, and departed for to go into Macedonia. Acts 20:1 (KJV) Paul revisited the believers in Macedonia to strengthen their faith and trust in the Lord. While there, Paul wrote a second letter to the church at Corinth. When Paul finished his work in Macedonia, he traveled down to Corinth. Paul stayed there for 3 months teaching and encouraging the believers. During his stay there, he wrote another letter, to the church in Rome. He wrote to encourage them, and to let them know of his plans to visit them after returning to Jerusalem. While still in Corinth, Paul wrote still another letter, this one to the 86

church in Galatia. Paul had heard that false teachers had come to the church and were teaching that faith in Christ alone won t save, but that they had to keep circumcision and the law to be accepted by God. All these letters are now in the New Testament for us to read and learn from. Paul decided that he would leave Corinth and sail to Syria but when he heard that some Jews planned to catch him there and kill him, he changed and went back up through Macedonia. D. Paul left Corinth and ministered in Troas 6 And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days; where we abode seven days. 7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. Acts 20:6,7 (KJV) The early church would meet every day for worship, prayer, and to be taught God's word. In other places the people couldn't meet every day, but they would at least meet on Sundays. These early believers would meet on Sundays, the first day of the week, because this was the day of the week that Jesus rose from the dead (Mark 16:9). 7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. Acts 20:7 (KJV) When the church at Troas met together, they had communion to remember Jesus body that was crucified for them, and His blood that was shed for their sins. They also listened to the Word of God; we need to be taught God s Word continually. Even mature believers need to continue studying the Word. These believers were so hungry for God s Word Paul taught them until midnight! On this particular occasion something tragic and wonderful happened while he was teaching: 87

8 And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. 9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. 10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him. 11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed. 12 And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted. Acts 20:8-12 (KJV) God gave Paul the power to raise this man from the dead, so that everyone could see that he really was sent by God, and that his message was truth. 88

Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 13 A. Paul called the Ephesian elders to come to Miletus Paul left Troas and traveled down to Miletus 17 And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church. Acts 20:17 (KJV) Paul would have appointed elders during the time that he had spent with the Ephesian church. As an Apostle, it was Paul's responsibility to train and appoint elders in all of the churches that he started. Today this is also the responsibility of elders to train and appoint other elders in the church to oversee, teach and protect. When each local church sends men like Paul and Silas to plant churches in other areas, it is their responsibility to appoint Spirit-filled as elders in those places to assure that new churches are properly cared for and nurtured. B. Paul reminded the elders of his life and ministry in Ephesus First Paul reminded them of how he lived his life and did his work in Ephesus. 18 And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons, 19 Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: Acts 20:18,19 (KJV) The Jews persecuted Paul and Satan tried to hinder him, however, Paul continued to live his life in such a way to provide a godly example to all. When we go into other areas to preach the gospel, we should be careful to live in such a way that draws people to Christ. Even though Paul suffered many things for preaching the gospel, he still faithfully served and trusted the Lord. 89

After reminding them of how he had lived among them, he now reminds them of his teaching. 20 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have showed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house, Acts 20:20 (KJV) It s interesting to note Paul s comment that he first showed them (example) and then taught them. It s not always easy to tell people the truth, but if they see truth lived out in our lives, they are often more receptive to truth. Paul told them everything that God wanted them to know; he didn t hold back anything that would be profitable to them. Notice Paul s dedication, he not only taught them in meetings, but also went to their homes to teach one on one. 21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 20:21 (KJV) Paul made it his business to warn Jews and Gentiles alike that there is only one way for sinners to come to God. That way is to agree that we are sinners in God s sight and to trust in Christ s death to pay the debt. C. Paul predicted his future Paul then told them about his future. 22 And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: 23 Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. 24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. 25 And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no 90

more. Acts 20:22-25 (KJV) If it was God s will, Paul was even willing to die for the gospel. Paul trusted God, and knew that He would never abandon him. Paul s heart was determined, for he knew he could trust God. Could we experience the peace that Paul had, even knowing that eventually we would be arrested and possibly executed for our faith? Yes! The same Holy Spirit that gave Paul the grace to bravely face such hardship dwells in us and when and if we are placed in the position to suffer for His name s sake, we will also be given the grace to endure with joy (Colossians 1:11). D. Paul warned and exhorted the Ephesian elders 26 Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. 27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Acts 20:26-27 (KJV) Paul shared that he had warned and taught the people of Ephesus. His conscience was clear; if anyone failed to trust Christ is was not because he had neglected to warn them. Because Paul was leaving them and wouldn't be back, he was now handing over the responsibility of overseeing the church to these elders. 28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. Acts 20:28 (KJV) In God s Word, elders are compared to shepherds. Just like we have to watch over and care for our animals, in the same manner elders must care for the church, God s people. In Bible times there were savage wolves that often tried to kill and eat the sheep. If a shepherd was not watchful and on guard against wolves his flock could be 91

torn to pieces. Just like that, Paul said there are false teachers who will come in to the church, like savage wolves, and try to lead the people astray. The elders must protect the church against such teaching, like a shepherd (lead guide, feed, protect). 29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. 31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. Acts 20:29-31 (KJV) Paul told them that they must be on guard against anyone who would come in and teach contrary to his teaching. We must pray that God will raise up men to be elders, who will watch over the church in this way (I Peter 5:2-3). E. Paul's farewell 32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. Acts 20:32 (KJV) Though Paul would no longer be with them, he reminded them that they still have God s Word, and that the Holy Spirit would use it to teach and guide them into all truth. Sometime in the future, we too, may find ourselves alone. We have God s Word and we must depend upon the Holy Spirit to lead and guide into all truth. Paul again reminds them of the way that he had lived among them, and urged them to follow his example: 33 I have coveted no man s silver, or gold, or apparel. 34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. 35 I have showed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20:33-35 (KJV) 92

No one could ever accuse Paul of being lazy. He taught the Word and at the same time worked to make a living (Acts 18:1-3). It s not God's will for His children to be lazy. God wants us all to work hard, not only to meet our own needs, but also to help meet the needs of others (Romans 12:11; 2 Thessalonians 3:6-12; Ephesians 4;28). These were the last words of Paul to them before they prayed and he left. 36 And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all. 37 And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul s neck, and kissed him, 38 Sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him unto the ship. Acts 20:36-38 (KJV) 93

Acts For Growing Believers ~ Lesson 14 A. Paul at Jerusalem The last lesson we studied was concerning Paul's last words to the Ephesian elders. When he finished speaking with them, he traveled by Ship to Caesarea where he spent one day with the believers, and then continued on to Jerusalem. 17 And when we were come to Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly. Acts 21:17 (KJV) The believers in Jerusalem were glad to have Paul with them, but he was only there a week until some unbelieving Jews recognized him. They had heard Paul teach in other places, and they said that he taught against the teaching of the Jews that it wasn t important to keep the law or go to the temple to worship God in Jerusalem. Paul had a gentile Christian friend with him there in Jerusalem named Trophimus. When the Jews saw Trophimus with Paul, they assumed that Paul had taken him into the inner parts of the temple, where only circumcised Jews were allowed. We read: 27 And when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews which were of Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the people, and laid hands on him, 28 Crying out, Men of Israel, help: This is the man, that teacheth all men everywhere against the people, and the law, and this place: and further brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place. 29 (For they had seen before with him in the city Trophimus an Ephesian, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.) 30 And all the city was moved, and the people ran together: and they took Paul, and drew him out of the temple: and forthwith the doors were shut. 31 And as they went about to kill him, tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in 94

an uproar. 32 Who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down unto them: and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they left beating of Paul. 33 Then the chief captain came near, and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and demanded who he was, and what he had done. 34 And some cried one thing, some another, among the multitude: and when he could not know the certainty for the tumult, he commanded him to be carried into the castle. Acts 21:27-34 (KJV) The next day the chief captain brought Paul before his accusers, the Pharisees and Sadduccees, but even they couldn't agree as to the charge that should be brought against Paul. 10 And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle. Acts 23:10 (KJV) At first, Paul had only planned to be in Jerusalem a short time before going on to Rome, but now he was a prisoner, and it didn t look like he would be released anytime soon. God knew Paul's thoughts and He comforted Paul assuring him that even this was in God s plan. 11 And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome. Acts 23:11 (KJV) God gave Paul this promise to encourage him. Listen to what happened the next day. 12 And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. Acts 23:12 (KJV) 95

Paul's nephew heard about the plan and told Paul. Paul then sent him to tell the chief captain. When the chief captain heard, he made plans to send Paul to Caesarea to be tried by Felix the Governor. 23 And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night; 24 And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor. Acts 23:23,24 (KJV) B. Paul at Caesarea When the Jews heard that Paul was imprisoned in Caesarea, they went down to convince Felix to put him to death. Felix knew that Paul did not deserve to be imprisoned, let alone put to death. However, he didn t want to release him either, so he kept Paul in prison. Two years later, when another governor, Festus, replaced Felix, Paul was still in prison. 27 But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix room: and Felix, willing to show the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound. Acts 24:27 (KJV) Even though God had promised Paul that he would one day go to Rome, still Paul had been in prison now for two years, and it was beginning to look hopeless. Waiting for God to answer sometimes, is the hardest thing that we have to do. Usually when we are sick, in trouble, or need something, we want God to help us immediately. However, God doesn t always answer us quickly, because He wants to purify our faith (1 Peter 1:6,7). He wants us to trust in Him even when all is going wrong, and there doesn't seem to be any hope. Finally, Paul was brought before Festus. Festus asked Paul if he was willing to return to Jerusalem to be tried. Paul asked to be sent to Rome, to be tried by the Emperor. 96

10 Then said Paul, I stand at Caesar s judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest. 11 For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar. 12 Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go. Acts 25:10-12 (KJV) C. Paul sent to Rome The decision was then made by the Governor to send Paul to Rome. 1 And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus band. Acts 27:1 (KJV) Then the ship that Paul was traveling in to Rome sank in a severe storm, but God delivered Paul and all those with him (Acts 27:14-44). After the ship was wrecked, they all swam to an island and built a fire. Paul was carrying a bundle of firewood when a snake came out and bit him (Acts 28:1-8). God didn t allow Paul to get sick or die. God had promised that Paul would go to Rome; God always does what He says. Then another ship came to that island, and they were able to board it and continue on to Rome (Acts 28:11). D. Paul at Rome 16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him. 17 And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. 18 Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me. 19 But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of. 97

20 For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain. 21 And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came showed or spake any harm of thee. 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against. 23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. 24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not. Acts 28:16-24 (KJV) Even though many Jews had become Christians, still the majority, as well as their leaders, refused to believe that Jesus was the deliverer. They believed that their own efforts would make them acceptable to God. God had His prophets write down long ago, that the majority of the Jews would reject Jesus and Paul told them so: 25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, 26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. Acts 28:25-27 (KJV) Paul then went on to tell them, the Bible said that more Gentiles would believe in Jesus than Jews. 28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it. Acts 28:28 (KJV) 98

There were Jews, however from many different countries that believed. Though usually they believed at the expense of heavy persecution, many turned back and publicly renounced their faith. These people were like the rocky ground, in the parable of the Sower (Luke 8:12, 13). Now listen to the last words that Luke wrote in the book of Acts for us: 29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves. 30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, 31 Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him. Acts 28:29-31 (KJV) We know that while Paul was in prison, he wrote three more books to three different churches, the Ephesians, Colossians, and Philippians. They are all now in the New Testament, as well. E. Paul released, arrested and killed After two years, Paul was released, he continued teaching God's word to those who had never heard. Also during this time, Paul wrote 2 more letters, one to Timothy, and another to Titus. These, too are both in the New Testament. After Paul continued on teaching for awhile, he was again arrested and put in prison in Rome during which time, he wrote another letter to Timothy. Shortly after Paul was imprisoned again, the emperor of Rome beheaded him. 99
