1 Mustard Seed Children s Summary for March 16, 2008 Released on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 Chosen to Build the Temple MEMORY VERSE: Take heed now; for the LORD hath chosen thee to build an house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do it (1 Chronicles 28:10) SCRIPTURE LESSON TEXT: 1 Chronicles 28:5-10, And of all my sons, (for the LORD hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel. 6 And he said unto me, Solomon thy son, he shall build my house and my courts: for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father. 7 Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he be constant to do my commandments and my judgments, as at this day. 8 Now therefore in the sight of all Israel the congregation of the LORD, and in the audience of our God, keep and seek for all the commandments of the LORD your God: that ye may possess this good land, and leave it for an inheritance for your children after you for ever. 9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever. 10 Take heed now; for the LORD hath chosen thee to build an house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do it. 20 And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD. 21 And, behold, the courses of the priests and the Levites, even they shall be with thee for all the service of the house of God: and there shall be with thee for all manner of workmanship every willing skilful man, for any manner of service: also the princes and all the people will be wholly at thy commandment. THE OBJECT IN VIEW: Teach that we should be strong in God s strength and finish the work God gives us to do. TRUTHS TO STRESS: 1. God has work for each of us to do. 2. The work we do can be a sign to others of God s presence. 3. We cannot do God s work unless we know and obey His commands. PLANNING LESSON AIDS: For Helping to Remember, prepare a 9-by-12-inch piece of white card stock for each student. Draw a 2½ -by-9-inch crown on the top of the 9-inch side. The crown should have four points and should be drawn with the points toward the edge of the paper. Extending from the bottom of the crown draw a fingernail-shaped face about 2 ½ inches wide and 3 inches long. The bottom line of the crown will be the top of the face. You will need crayons, colored pencils, safety scissors, other decorating items, and a stapler. Make a copy of the lesson review and word search for each student.

2 LESSON BACKGROUND: Our covenant God often uses people to reveal His promises and His presence. We are a sign to the world that God is real and that He is alive and working in and through us. God sometimes gives us a specific work to do, a work that reveals Him in a special way. Who can understand why God chooses one man or woman for a job? God knows us far better than we know ourselves. When it came to building the temple for Israel, David wanted the job, but God refused and gave the task to Solomon. Building the temple was an awesome task. The temple was to be the visible sign of God s covenant and presence with His people. For four hundred years Israel had only a tabernacle, or tent, as God s dwelling place with them. God gave David the plans for the temple, but He chose Solomon to build it. TEACHER S NOTES / TELLING THE LESSON: Consider the following as you prepare your lesson for your students: 1. Which of David s sons was chosen to be king after Him? David had many sons, but God chose Solomon to be king over Israel. Solomon was not David s oldest son. He was one of the younger ones, but God chose Him. Solomon did not have an easy task ahead of him and had to face opposition to him being king. David s oldest son was Adonijah, and he felt that he was the rightful king and declared so (1 Kings 1:5). But David had promised Solomon s mother, Bathseba, that he would be the next king (1 Kings 1:28-31). David had Solomon publicly anointed by the priests and installed as king. 2. What would be God s relationship with Solomon? God promised David that Solomon would build the temple. God also promised that He would be like a father to Solomon. A good father loves and helps, and God is the best of all fathers. Like a good father, God would bless Solomon if he obeyed and punish him if he disobeyed. By emphasizing that His relationship to Solomon would be like that of father and son, God indicated that he would maintain the same relationship with Solomon that He had had with David throughout his life and reign. 3. How long would God s promises to Solomon last? God promised David that if Solomon obeyed His laws, He would establish Solomon s kingdom forever. That means that Solomon would always have one of his descendants ruling Israel. As for Solomon, however, there was a condition placed upon this promise. Solomon had to remain faithful to God if he was to enjoy the full blessings of God s promises. Everything God wanted for Solomon would happen if he faithfully obeyed God s commandments. 4. What challenge did David give Solomon concerning God s laws? In the hearing of God and of all Israel, David gave Solomon a challenge. David told him to study and obey God s laws so that God could bless him and his descendants. If God s people would obey Him, God would bring peace to Israel. David told Solomon to know God and to make God king of his life. David told Solomon to serve God willingly with all his heart. Solomon s faithfulness and obedience to God s laws would greatly impact the nation and determine God s blessings. David, therefore, emphasized the need for Solomon to obey God and to keep God s commandments. 5. How did David encourage Solomon concerning building the temple? David knew that the building of the temple would be a huge task, and he wanted to encourage Solomon with his help. David did all he could to help gather materials for Solomon. While Solomon was still young, David gathered gold and silver and gave part of his own riches for the building of the temple. Leaders of the people gave gold, silver, brass and iron. David also helped with preparing the materials (stones, iron, cedar, etc) for the building.

3 David also encouraged Solomon with his words. David told Solomon that he had been chosen by God to build the temple and that he should be strong and do the work. David reminded his son that God was with him and that God would not fail him or leave him. God would help him finish the work. He also encouraged Solomon by telling him he would have skilled workers, the priests and the Levites to also help him. TELLING HOW TO LIVE: God has a job for each of us. He gave Solomon the huge job of building the temple. Solomon needed to trust God for strength and wisdom to finish the job. Solomon needed to obey God. We also need to trust God for strength and wisdom. We need to obey God s rules. We need to finish the jobs God gives us to do. Even when we are frightened or feel overwhelmed by the tasks that lie ahead of us, we need to seek God, pray, and trust His leading. We need to remain faithful in the work for God, and He will strengthen and equip us to do what He has called us to do. HELPING TO REMEMBER (ACTIVITIES): Use the following activities, or create your own, to emphasize the key points of the lesson: King Solomon Craft: Give each student a one of the prepared drawings. Each student will make a king (to represent Solomon). Cut away the paper between the crown points and color and decorate the crown. On the face, draw hair, eyes, nose, mouth, and a moustache. Color a beard around the sides and bottom of the face. Color the rest of the paper to represent a royal robe. After each student completes decorating King Solomon roll the paper into a tube shape and staple it. Repeat the memory verse and let each child practice saying the verse. A word search containing key words from the lesson is included at the end of this summary. David spoke these encouraging words to his son Solomon. God chose King Solomon for the huge job of building the temple. David told Solomon to be strong and to do the work.
