1 Chapter 1 : Book Review: Bock, Glaser, et al., The Gospel According to Isaiah â the archives near Emma Review: To the Jew First By Alan Shore To the Jew First, which takes the Apostle Paul's proclamation in Romans as its organizing principle, is a collection of papers that were offered at a series of conferences of the same title in New York City and Florida in and October 31, Author: I received a free review copy of this book courtesy of Kregal Publications therefore, I hope to give an unbiased review. It is unlike any book I have read. Honestly, I avoid books on evangelism, especially those that emphasize technique and strategy. In part, this book has those aims. What makes it different from other books like it would be the scholarly essays. In other words, this book is a mixture of scholarly thinking on the Fourth Servant Song technically Isaiah Bock and Mitch Glaser are the editors of this collection. Glaser confesses that for the most part most Jews are secular and many are not familiar with the Book of Isaiah, but his group has had some success in using this chapter to show fellow Jews why Jesus is the messiah. He ends the introduction touting the uniqueness of this book: The book splits into three parts. Isaiah 53 and Practical Theology. Christian Interpretations of Isaiah 53 partners with Michael L. Jewish Interpretations of Isaiah Both chapters provide surveys of the reception history of this passage from the perspectives of the Christian and Jewish communities. Those who are familiar with N. This is the interpretation I have adopted as a Christian. It is a presentation of how Averbeck understands Isaiah 53 to be interpreted by Christians. He interacts with modern authors more than ancient ones. He observes that some Jewish readings have focused upon a singular messianic figure. Most readings see the Servant as Israel, the collective, suffering people. The three figures given the most attention are Rashi, Ibn Ezra, and Radak. Part II begins with Walter C. He makes arguments about this passage by trying to intertwine it with parts of Zechariah. I think this book could have done without the chapter, at least if this is a book aimed at convincing skeptics rather than an evangelical chatting with fellow evangelicals who share his presuppositions. Wilkins attempts to answer two questions: Wilkins addresses the question about corporate v. He notes how the early church as seen in our New Testament saw Jesus as the Servant by examining the Gospels. The chapter focuses mostly on the Gospel of Matthew. He finds Isaiah Overall, I liked this chapter. Isaiah 53 in Acts 8 by Darrell Bock is a fine chapter on intertextual exegesis and the examination of how Luke-Acts uses the Old Testament as part of its message. He deals fairly with interpretive problems and textual matters making it one of the truly scholarly chapters of the book. He shows readers how Isaiah He discusses how this section introduces Isaiah 53 and how New Testament writers would have understood this section to have something to say about their own mission as proclaimers of the Servant. The chapter moves from Isaiah Over and over again Evans shows how various phrases from Isaiah It is by far the most in-depth chapter of the book. He investigates the wording as it relates to passage like Leviticus, 16, concluding that Isaiah 53 does present Jesus as a substitutionary sacrifice for the people. Forgiveness and Salvation in Isaiah 53 by Robert B. He provides his own in-depth translation of Isaiah It overgeneralized to the point that it was painful. He writes about how it impacted his conversion, how he sees the messiah in the passage, how this reading of Isaiah 53 has impacted Jewish evangelism in the past, and he explores how it has been used, e. There are section on the polemical use of Isaiah 53 and some major points of contention as well as contemporary objections to the Christian reading of Isaiah Then he writes about how to overcome those objections before saying a bit about how individuals and churches can use Isaiah 53 to evangelize Jews. Preaching Isaiah 53 by Donald R. Sunukjian is a short primer of moving from exegesis to sermon structure to presentation. The end of the book has two appendixes that are attached to Chapter Eleven: Dramatic-Narrative Sermon on Isaiah 53 are example sermon from Sunukjian. Then there is a Scripture Index and a Subject Index to assist you in navigating the book. Overall, it is a decent book. Therefore, the value is relative to whether the reader shares the aims of the book. Page 1

2 Chapter 2 : Review: To the Jew First Chosen People Ministries Among the better chapters is "The Message of the Prophets and Jewish Evangelism" by Richard E. Averbeck, a writer whom we had not read before; Barry R. Leventhal, "The Holocaust and the Sacred Romance" (his chart on total depravity and his listing of passages on life and death are suburb); and, "To the Jew First in the New Millennium" by Arnold G. Fruchtenbaum (best study on "to the Jew first"). With a desire to provide a robust, thorough and evangelistic tool to aid in the evangelism of the Jewish people, Chosen People Ministries leader Mitch Glaser has teamed up with Darrell Bock and a solid line up of evangelical scholars to produce The Gospel According to Isaiah The Christian interpretations, though they may vary on some details, hold in common the belief that the Suffering Servant in Isaiah 53 is Jesus Christ the Son of God. Richard Averbeck deals with the literary, historical and hermeneutical issues surrounding Isaiah In chapter two Michael Brown lays out the various Jewish interpretations of Isaiah 53 which all have in common the Suffering Servant as the Jewish people themselves. Brown walks through Isaiah 53 verse by verse giving the Jewish interpretation of each as well as a response. Part Two deals with Isaiah 53 and biblical theology. As the section indicates, Kaiser deals with the biblical theological identity of the Servant of the Lord. The chapters between Darrell Bock and Craig A. Evans show the reader that Isaiah 53 runs throughout the entire New Testament in every book and author. Its contents are both quoted and alluded to in every book and authors writings. In the conclusion the book Bock has provided a number of helpful charts showing the quotations of and illusions to Isaiah 53 within the NT. Perhaps the best chapter of part two is David L. After a solid treatment of the subject Allen concludes with the following: The Suffering Servant both bears the guilt of his people and removes the penalty their sin incurred thus saving them from their sins. Part Three addresses a number of practical issues related to Isaiah Feinberg gives a timely discussion on the postmodern themes in Isaiah Glaser overviews some of the various methods in which Isaiah 53 has been and is used in Jewish evangelism. He overviews the polemical use, major points of argumentation from, contemporary objections to and responses to those objections to Isaiah First, the contributors of the book are all conservative evangelical scholars who are well known in their fields of expertise. These men are qualified to speak in the fields their chapters address. Second, the book has an evangelistic and apologetic focus. The desire of the contributors is to equip the reader with the apologetic tools they need to defend the Christian interpretation of Isaiah 53 as well as use it to evangelize Jews with the chapter. Third, the book is accessible to Christians ranging from pastors to laymen. To be sure there are is plenty of detailed exegesis of Isaiah as well as themes that run throughout them. However, much of the book is accessible to the average Christian. This book will assist any Christian to be more familiar with the contents of Isaiah 53 if they wish to engage in Jewish evangelism. The desire is to equip all Christians. Fourth, while the book clearly defends a Christ-centered interpretation of Isaiah 53, all of the contributors interact with the standard Jewish interpretations of the chapter. Not only is there a chapter on the Jewish interpretations of Isaiah 53 each contributor interacts with these interpretations throughout their defense of the Christian interpretation. This side-by-side presentation makes the book better accomplish its goal of equipping the Christian with the tools they need to evangelize Jews. Finally, as mentioned, the book is very exegetical in nature as most chapters in part one and two mine the depths of the relevant verses. If you are looking to gain a deeper and clearer understanding of the Christ-centered nature of Isaiah 53 and want to be better equipped to evangelize Jews for Christ then The Gospel According to Isaiah 53 is the best place to start. This would be a great book for a Bible study or to use as a guide in one-on-one while witnessing to a Jewish friend or family neighbor. I received this book for free from Kregel in return for an honest review. I received no compensation for my review, was under no obligation to provide a favorable review and the thoughts and words expressed herein are my own. Rather than a single author expressing a main idea or a response to a question posed in the introduction or the subtitle, this trend gives a general topic and allowing several contributors to write on anything within the particular parameters. In my opinion though, Page 2

3 the essays seem to be writing to different audiences, so yes there is something in here for everyone from layman to seminary student to pastor to professor. It This book seems to follow a trend that is becoming more and more popular. It does reach that wide audience but at the cost of concisment. Page 3

Introduction This work is a gem for all those interested in the exegesis of Isaiah 53, but more importantly in the use of Isaiah 53 for the evangelism of Jews. It is divided into three parts: Table of Contents Chapter 1: Christian Interpretations of Isaiah 53, by Richard E. Jewish Interpretations of Isaiah 53, by Michael L. Isaiah 53 in Acts 8, by Darrell L. Forgiveness and Salvation in Isaiah 53, by Robert B. Postmodern Themes from Isaiah 53, by John S. Preaching Isaiah, by Donald R. Sunukjian Summary Chapter One: Christian Interpretations of Isaiah 53 Christian interpretations are those that identify the Servant of Isaiah 53 in some way with Jesus. Some do this more indirectly, for example, in a typological manner. The Servant is not Jesus, but a figure in whom the eschatological work of God is completed. Thus, Jesus follows the same pattern. Some interpreters simply follow Acts 8 in identifying the Servant as Jesus directly prophetic. The Servant passages in Isa 40â 66 were explained classically by Franz Delitzsch as a pyramid, with the elect nation as a whole at the bottom, the remnant on top of that, and at the very top a single servant who represents the nation as a whole and suffers vicariously for them. The passages about the Servant from Isaiah 40 on narrow from referring to the nation as a whole to the remnant to the individual in Isa However, not all want to see an individual in Isaiah Some want to see all references to the servant as the same. Since it is clearly Israel as a whole in Isa Another issue is that the servant is said to suffer on behalf of Israel, it could be referring to the remnant. On the other hand, there are some who see an individual in Isaiah 53, but one in the time of Isaiah. John Walton argued for a Babylonian background for Isaiah 53 in the substitute king ritual. Other individuals suggested are Jehoiachin, Cyrus, or the prophet himself. These interpreters see a historical reference with a final, ultimate reference to Jesus Christ. One other important debate is whether Isaiah 53 envisions substitutionary atonement. Jacob Milgrom has argued well that the purpose of the guilt offering was to atone for the desecration of sacred things. We can now see how the Servant would be a guilt offering for Israel. The exile envisioned in Isa 40â 66 was a result of the desecration of Israel, who were supposed to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation Exod The Servant of Isa 53 would offer himself as a guilt offering to make atonement for Israel because of its sin and corruption that desecrated them. Yet, especially since Rabbis Rashi, Ibn Ezra, and Radak eleventh and twelfth century, the corporate interpretation of Isaiah 53 has dominated Jewish interpretations. This interpretation understands the Gentiles to be speaking throughout Isaiah 53 about Israel, particularly the relatively righteous remnant in exile, who is vicariously bearing the sins of the nations while dispersed among the nations. The first-person singulars later in the chapter are interpreted as individual Gentile kings speaking of their own people. Multiple problems exist with this view. Also, it is much more natural to take Isaiah and his fellow or school of prophets as the speakers of Secondly, how would the Gentiles know that Israel in exile was suffering for their sins? Thirdly, according to Jeremiah But Isaiah 53 says a sinless Servant will suffer for the sins of sinful people, who are healed by his stripes, which is the opposite scenario. A bridge between Jewish and Christian interpreters, however, is that Rashi understood Isaiah 53 to be speaking of vicarious sufferingâ Israel suffers for the sins of the nations, through which suffering the nations are healed. Thus, we can agree, if they would allow it, that Isaiah 53 speaks of one suffering on behalf of another so that the latter may be healed. We may also note how alike Jesus and the Jews truly are. Especially in a post-haulocaust world, we understand that the Jews have been despised, rejected, persecuted, and even slaughtered. Jesus is one very well fit to sympathize with his people and understand their sufferings, since he underwent the same rejection, persecution, and slaughter, and did so to vicariously pay for their sins and heal them and all of us. However, the phrase is used elsewhereâ [ Page 4

The specific requirements or preferences of your reviewing publisher, classroom teacher, institution or organization should be applied. One was ungodly; the other was justified by God. The Hebrew literary style leaves no question in the mind of the reader that there are only 2 types of individuals; the righteous and the ungodly. These two entities are contrasted with each other. The righteous [person] does not take advice from the ungodly sinner. He does not involve himself in the way of the ungodly. His way of life is totally different than the unregenerate sinner whose life is marked by scorn toward not only godly religion, but the godly, themselves. The pursuit of the righteous man is to delight himself in Almighty God; and in His written revelation, the Scriptures. As he does this, his path in life and death is a divine success. His works take on a beneficial spiritual quality. He will be blessed favored by Creator God. The soul which has not been regenerated by God is lost to his own damning sins. He or she has rejected the forgiveness gained by Christ who died for the sins of the whole world. That person then, dies in damning unbelief. Hence, this Psalm describes the eternal fate of the ungodly. They will not inhabit the same space as the righteous. And, they will be driven away as the chaff is, in the wind. Christ, Himself calls the the righteous, "blessed of My Father," who are invited to inherit that which is prepared for them. However, the ungodly are called the "goats" who will go away into everlasting punishment prepared for the devil and his wicked angels. Friend, God Almighty will not be fooled. He knows your heart. He knows whether you are presently one of His or whether you are ungodly, headed for hell. You may think that because you make a show of religious activity, that, that action will stand you in good with God. The Bible calls this show, "works. The Scripture says that you must be born from above [John 3: That, is a false gospel of Universalism. In short, Universalism is a false gospel which is void of saving faith. The Bible proclaims that it is faith in Christ, which saves a human soul from the eternal consequences of human sin. It never says that faith in a church formula saves the soul. It never says that "faithful" church membership in a particular Christian denomination saves a soul from eternal damnation. It never says that if you follow this and that step, that you will have arrived in the good graces of God. It relates about belief and faith in Jesus Christ, which saves the [your] soul. Unregenerate friend, you have a priceless soul. But, your whole being is sinful. Your sins are an offense to God. His holy presence will not allow sin in His holy heaven. You need to be dressed in His garments of holiness. In the Gospel of John For those who talk in such a way I take my pen in hand, and hope this picture that I paint will help them understand. I seem to see an angel stand beside a golden gate. Beyond the gate is Paradise, where heavenly glories wait. Stretched through the Heavens wait a throng who fain would enter there; the angel sentry they must pass -- He questions them with care: I must keep you waiting, too. On page after page the angel looks, but no mention the record hath. You, too dear soul must step aside, and with the others stand. The angel hears the story through with interest to the end. But this, his simple verdict was, "This will not save, my friend. But following him is not the way to gain an entrance here. You obtain that faith in the Scriptural divine revelation: Please also note other related Scriptures: Page 6

7 Chapter 6 : The Gospel According to Isaiah 53 Life Giving Words of Hope & Encouragement by Jeff Davis The Gospel According to Isaiah 53 presents the redemptive work of the Messiah to the Jewish community, exploring issues of atonement and redemption in light of Isaiah chapter The Introduction was penned by Dr. Not being familiar with the publisher, but knowing of Charisma magazine, I went on the web to see what I could learn before tackling this work. Since a link offered an additional word, I hit it and was told: Not for a nanosecond! Perhaps he ate five large pepperoni pizzas all by himself, washed down by 10 giant Pepsis, and went to bed â experiencing a nightmare â but he never went to Hell for 23 seconds, say nothing of 23 minutes. But it did prove to me about what I was already suspicious, namely, the publisher was knee-deep in charismatic teaching: In fact, it boasted of having authors in its stable like Benny Hinn for whom my respect is on a par with Al Capone and John Dillinger â different kind of racketeers, T. But about this book: Adelaja is a native Nigerian who pastors a white He humbly takes credit for the revolution in Ukraine that freed that nation from Soviet dominion. The book is not all bad. He even has a few paragraphs on repentance and says preachers ought to be preaching it, but the weaving of his charismatic ideas into the text were just too much for this reviewer. Much of his direction came from visions, dreams, and God talking to him about what he should do. In our day, your next door neighbor may be into one of these religions. There is a lot of good information about these world religions packed into this little volume. A unique and good feature of this work is that in every chapter there are answers to four questions for that religion as noted in the Introduction, really pertinent to the study given. We are glad to recommend it. The back cover features three puffs: With that kind of a start, surprisingly to me, I agreed with much of the book and found it stimulating and challenging. Yet if anyone ever deserved to stay at the Jerusalem Ritz-Carlton, dine on grilled Pandora with dried tomato pesto, or be chauffeured around in a luxury model of Hertz Rent-a-Donkey, Jesus certainly did. How can anyone be so shallow as to think that their giving should produce for them opulence and wealth when Jesus himself had absolutely nothing! As noted, McSwain is a gifted writer and there is much profit in this book. Page 7

8 Chapter 7 : The Gospel According to Isaiah Encountering the Suffering Servant in - Google Books By Alan Shore. To the Jew First, which takes the Apostle Paul's proclamation in Romans as its organizing principle, is a collection of papers that were offered at a series of conferences of the same title in New York City and Florida in and It should be no surprise that some people today struggle with identifying Jesus as the Messiah when even His own disciples did not understand when He spoke of His own death and resurrection. Part of the confusion is rooted in the enigma of the corporate and individual servant spoken of throughout the book of Isaiah. Another example of this individual and corporate servant paradigm is found in Isaiah It is this individual Servant who is going to be the one who restores the national servant. However, this is problematic, especially when looking at the Song of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah In this passage, the Servant is rejected and dies for the sins of others and Yates reveals how this action highlights four differences: In this passage, R. Jesus, as the Messianic Servant, offers Himself as a guilt offering Lev. It was Jesus, and no other, who offered up His life as a sacrifice for sin, and justified many by bearing their iniquities, as the obedient Servant. Between these epistles, Isaiah Only Jesus Christ fulfills both of these roles as He rules and reigns forever, as a result of His perfect faith and trust in God and His suffering and ultimate sacrifice, which saved His people and became a ransom for many. This scholarly work should stand the test of time and have great impact amongst both the Jewish and Christian community. The Gospel According to Isaiah Feinberg, Mitch Glaser, and Donald R. 9 Chapter 8 : Book Review: To the Jew First CMNZ By Alan Shore To the Jew First, which takes the Apostle Paul's proclamation in Romans as its organizing principle, is a collection of papers that were offered at a series of conferences of the same title in New York City and Florida in and The Gospel According to Isaiah 53 presents the redemptive work of the Messiah to the Jewish community, exploring issues of atonement and redemption in light of Isaiah chapter It is clear that Jesus fulfills the specifications of the suffering servant of Isaiah This book has many potential uses in its presentation of the gospel for Jewish people. It will be beneficial as supplemental reading for classes on Isaiah, the Prophets, and Jewish evangelism. And believers will be trained to share Isaiah 53 with Jewish friends and family. I signed up with Kregel for free books to review, because I have found their books to be worthwhile for theology. The book began with a Jewish rabbi becoming a Christian believer in, after hearing the Gospel in the Lower East Side. He founded a group that became the Chosen People Ministries. Therefore, this work is both academic and evangelistic. Biblical Basis for Isaiah 53 as Evangelism Isaiah 53 is so significant to the New Testament that most of the chapter is quoted in various New Testament books. As they say, if Isaiah 53 in the Old Testament were lost, most of it could be recovered from the New Testament sources. This also illustrates the unified perspective of the Bible, not as a collection of books or verses, but one unified message of truth, the Book of the Holy Spirit, with one divine author and many human sub-authors. Pope Piux XII expressed it well, comparing the Bible to Christ, having a divine and a human nature and yet without error. Isaiah 53 â Justification by Faith In honor of the Reformation we should recognize the departure from Romanism that Luther advanced, advocating justification by faith while rejecting any version of justification by works. This distinction is essential for understanding the Christian faith, noting what divides and what unites various confessions. Most conservative Protestants understand that the Gospel creates faith. This book illustrates that confidence in describing a recent campaign to spread the Gospel among Jews. The focus was on proclaiming the Gospel with a focus on Isaiah 53 being fulfilled by Jesus the Messiah and Savior. Although this basic concept has many variations, the unifying truth among conservative Protestants is that faith in Christ means complete forgiveness of all sin, salvation, and eternal life. In contrast, liberal Protestants emphasize the grace of God by declaring all the sins of the world forgiven and absolved, whether anyone believes or not, preferably not. This exodus from historic Christianity began at Halle University, which was founded to promote Biblical studies yet soon became rationalistic. The mainline denominations of America teach this cryto-universalism. Since everyone is forgiven and saved in this parody of the Faith, there is no barrier to ecumenism with any religion and no reason for evangelism. In Greek, report is akoue, so we often translate Romans That way, the emphasis is on hearing, but Isaiah really means to emphasize this unique report. The Holy Spirit carries out the proclamation of the Gospel, which creates faith and graciously gives that forgiveness promised in the proclamation. Understanding Isaiah 53 as the key Gospel passage for Jews is the principle reason for this book, which is organized in three parts: Interpretation of Isaiah Isaiah 53 in Biblical Theology 3. The chapters include a large number of references to other worthwhile efforts. I have already promised to loan the book to someone who specializes in this area. Isaiah 53 is especially for evangelism among Jewish people, but the book is a great resource for any Gospel-based evangelism effort, where the emphasis is upon the Word of God rather than the felt needs of man. Those who will appreciate this compilation the most are: College and seminary students. Chapter 9 : The Biblical Evangelist It is the intention and prayer of this website's author, to convey the Christian Message through various topical messages, instruction and information. May God, the Holy Spirit, utilize this effort for His gracious purposes, in participation of His Page 9
