1 1 2 4/17/05 Genesis The baton is being passed from Abraham to Isaac. -Isaac is the patriarch which we know the least about. -It is in Ch. 25:19-28:9 that we get the greatest detail about his life. 26:1-11 The journeying of Isaac to Gear. 26:1-6 The famine of the land. 26:1 The decision of Isaac. 1) The first famine was in the days of Abraham and went to Egypt. Gen. 12:10 2) Abraham also went to Gerar to Abimelech, the king of Gerar. Gen :2 The Lord appeared to Isaac. 1) This was the first time God appeared to Isaac. 2) The message was clear, not to go down to Egypt, a type of the world. 3) Isaac was to live in the land which Yahweh would tell him. 26:3-5 The promise of Yahweh to Isaac. 1) His presence, Dwell in this land, and I will be with you. Vs. 3a-b 2) His provisions, And bless you. Vs. 3b 3) His possession of the land, For to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. Vs. 3c-d 4) His propagation of people, And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands. Vs. 4a-b * Gen. 15: ) His promise Messiah, And in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed. Vs. 4c * Gen. 12: ) The proclamation was based on the faith of Abraham, Because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws. Vs. 5 26:6-11 Isaac passes his wife off as his sister at Gerar 26:6-7 Isaac feared for his life. 1) Isaac trusted in himself, the arm of flesh, rather than to stay in the land and trust God. Vs. 6 2) Isaac repeats the sin and lie of his Father for the very same reason, that the men would kill him for his beautiful wife. Vs. 7
2 3 4 26:8-9 Isaac s carelessness exposed his lie to Abimelech. 1) The time of his journeying had been long. Vs. 8a 2) The king observed looking out his window that Isaac was treating Rebekah more like his wife, than his sister. Vs. 8be a) The word endearment tsachaq means caressing, fondling and could even imply sexual union. b) This would not be something you would do to your sister. 26:10-11 Isaac is confronted by Abimelech. 1) Abimelech said, What is this you have done to us? Vs. 10a a) A sharp rebuke to the Patriarch. b) He saw the lie against all of them, us. 2) Abimelech said, One of the people might soon have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us. Vs. 10b-c a) This being very similar to Abraham. b) This sins of the parents are not visited on the children by God but the children sadly can fail as their parents. 3) Abimelech commanded all his people regarding the matter. Vs. 11 a) He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death. b) He revealed integrity. c) But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Indeed you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man's wife. Gen. 20:3 26:12-22 The dwelling of Isaac in the land. 26:12-14 Isaac sowed the land. 1) Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold, which was unheard of. Vs. 12a-b 2) The cause was that the LORD blessed him. Vs. 12c 3) The man became very prosperous. Vs. 13 4) His possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants, which mad the Philistines to envied him. Vs :15-22 The antagonistic relationship between Isaac and the Philistines. 1) The Philistines had stopped up all the wells by the servants of Abraham and filled them with earth. Vs. 15 2) And Abimelech told Isaac to go away because he was much mightier than the
3 5 6 Philistines, so he departed pitching his tent in the Valley of Gerar. Vs ) Isaac dug again the wells of water which the Philistines had stopped up and called them by the names Abraham had given them. Vs. 18 * A violation of the covenant they mane. Gen. 21:23 4) Isaac's servants dug in the valley, and found a well of running water there. But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled over who the water belonged to, so they name the well Esek contention, because they quarreled with him. Vs ) They dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name Sitnah strife. Vs. 21 6) He moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, because he said, For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land. Vs. 22 * Rehaboth twbxr means, wide places or streets. 26:23-35 The dwelling of Isaac in Beersheba. 26:23-25 The Lord appears to Isaac. 1) Isaac went up from there to Beersheba. Vs. 23 a) Without doubt according to the direction of God. Vs. 2 b) The former residence of Abraham. Gen. 21:33 2) Yahweh appeared to Isaac the same night. Vs. 24 a) He identified Himself, I am the God of your father Abraham. Vs. 24b * This is the second time God appeared to him. Vs. 2 b) He encouraged him, Do not fear, for I am with you. Vs. 24c-d c) He promised to prosper and propagate him, I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Abraham's sake. Vs. 24e 3) So he built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD, and he pitched his tent there; and there Isaac's servants dug a well. Vs. 25 a) The place of revelation and worship. b) The place marked rich fellowship. 26:26-35 The Philistines make a covenant with Isaac. 1) Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath, one of his friends, and Phichol the commander of his army. Vs. 26 * Phichol being a title.
4 7 8 2) Isaac asked them why they had come to him, since they hated him and sent him away? Vs. 27 3) There response was selfish. Vs. 28 a) We have certainly seen that the LORD is with you. Vs. 28a-b b) They wanted an oath between them to make a covenant with him. Vs. 28c-f 4) They wanted to insure Isaac would not war against them. Vs. 29 a) Despite they hostility towards Isaac, they said they had not touched him. Vs. 29b b) They said they had done good to him. Vs. 29b c) They had sent him away in peace. Vs. 29b d) They told Isaac, he was the blessed of Yahweh. Vs. 29c 5) Isaac made them a feast, and they ate and drank, they arose early in the morning and swore an oath with one another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. Vs ) The same day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, We have found water. Vs. 32 7) He called it Shebah aoth:. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day. * The well of the seven-fold oath. Gen 21: ) Esau s marriage to pagans. Vs a) Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite. Vs. 34 b) They were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah. Vs. 35 c) Esau's profane act. 2Cor. 6: :1-5 The attempt of Isaac to bless Esau. 27:1 The old age of Isaac. 1) Isaac was old and was partially blind and he called Esau his older son and he responded to him. Vs. 1 2) Isaac thought the day of his death was near. Vs. 2 * He died 43 years later at 180. Gen. 35:28 3) Isaac sent Esau to hunt down some game and prepared it as he loved, so that he could bless him before he died. Vs. 3-4 a) This was rebellion against God s revelation, it was Jacob who would be blessed by God. Gen. 25:23 b) Isaac was about 137 years old, he was 60 years old when Esau and Jacob were born, so the sons were about 77 years old. Gen. 25:26
5 9 10 4) Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt game and to bring it. Vs. 5 27:6-17 The attempt of Rebekah to thwart Isaac s plan. 27:6-7 Rebekah related to Jacob the plans of his father Isaac to impart the blessing to Esau. 1) Jacob knew he had sold his birthright to him. Gen. 25: ) Rebekah attempt to help God to fulfill what He promised. 27:8-10 Rebekah explained her plan to Jacob. 1) Rebekah commands Jacob s complete obedience to her plan. Vs. 8 2) Rebekah told Jacob to the flock and bring two choice kids of the goats, and she would prepared them as Isaac loved. Vs. 9 3) Then he was to take it to his father to eat it, and receive the blessing you before his death. Vs :11-13 Jacob was reluctant of the plan. 1) Jacob reminded his mother that his brother Esau was hairy but he was not. Vs. 11 2) Jacob had two concerns. Vs. 12 a) Perhaps his father would feel him and appear as a deceiver to him. Vs. 12a-b b) And he would bring a curse on himself rather than a blessing. Vs. 12c 3) Rebekah in her strong personality convinced Jacob. Vs. 13 a) The sharp contrast is evident by the word But. b) Rebekah said, Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me. Vs :14-17 The execution of the plan. 1) Jacob brought the kids and Rebekah prepared them, as Isaac loved them. Vs. 14 2) Rebekah took the clothes of Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob. Vs. 15 3) Rebekah put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. Vs. 16 4) Then she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob. Vs :18-29 The deception of Isaac by Jacob. 27:18-20 Jacob entered his father s tent.
6 ) Jacob called out for his father and he responded, Here I am. Who are you, my son? Vs. 18 * This was the first check at which Jacob could of turn away but he did not. 2) Jacob pretended to be Esau. Vs. 19 a) He answered his father, I am Esau your firstborn. Vs. 19a-b b) He told him he had done as you told him. Vs. 19c c) He then said, Please arise, sit and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me. Vs. 19d-f 3) Jacob received his second check. Vs. 20 a) But Isaac said to his son, How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son Vs. 20a-c * Jacob s heart must of stopped at this point! b) And he said, Because the LORD your God brought it to me. Vs. 20d-e * At this point Jacob involves God in his deception, lies keep compounding. 27:21-25 Isaac asked to touch Jacob. 1) This was the third check on Jacob s deception of his father. Vs. 21 a) Isaac was partially blind. b) Isaac wanted to feel him, to see if it was truly Esau or not. c) Isaac had to of had some suspicions. 2) Isaac sense a seeming contradiction as he felt him and said, The voice is Jacob s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau. Vs. 22 3) Isaac did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau's hands; so he blessed him. Vs. 23 a) The deceiver got deceived. b) Isaac s attempt to thwart the purposes of God backfired on him. 4) Isaac gave a fourth and last check to Jacob. Vs a) Are you really my son Esau? He said, I am. Vs. 24 b) Isaac requested him to bring the game that he might bless him and he ate. Vs :26-29 Isaac blessed Jacob. 1) Isaac asked him to come near so he could kiss him. Vs. 26 2) As he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said: Surely, the smell of my son Is like the smell of a field Which the LORD has blessed. Vs. 27 3) Isaac preceded to bless Jacob believing he was blessing Esau. Vs a) Therefore may God give you Of the dew of heaven. Vs. 28a
7 13 14 b) Of the fatness of the earth. Vs. 28b c) And plenty of grain and wine. Vs. 28c d) Let peoples serve you, And nations bow down to you. Vs. 29a-b e) Be master over your brethren. Vs. 29c f) And let your mother's sons bow down to you. Vs. 29d g) Cursed be everyone who curses you, And blessed be those who bless you! Vs. 29e-f 27:30-40 The fear of Isaac and the cry of Esau. 27:30-34 The shocking of human deception. 1) As soon as Jacob left his father Esau enter to be blessed from his hunt. Vs. 30 2) Esau brought the savory food and said to his father, Let my father arise and eat of his son's game, that your soul may bless me. Vs. 31 3) Isaac asked, Who are you? So he said, I am your son, your firstborn, Esau. Vs. 32 4) Isaac trembled exceedingly, and said, Who? Where is the one who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it before you came, and I have blessed him- -and indeed he shall be blessed. Vs. 33 a) Isaac knew he had attempted to override God s will and he failed. b) Isaac knew the blessing of God would stand. 5) When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, Bless me--me also, O my father! Vs. 34 6) Isaac reveals the deceit of Jacob to take away the blessing of Esau. Vs. 35 7) The response of Esau was one of bitterness. Vs. 36 a) Is he not rightly named Jacob? b) For he has supplanted me these two times. c) He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!" 1)) His cry was for the blessing, not the birthright. 2)) His crying was of remorse not godly repentance. Heb. 12:14-17 d) And he said, "Have you not reserved a blessing for me?" 27:37-40 The affirmation of the blessing to Jacob by Isaac. 1) The proclamation of Isaac. Vs. 37 a) Then Isaac answered and said to Esau, Indeed I have made him your master, and all his brethren I have given to him as servant. Vs. 37a-c
8 15 16 b) With grain and wine I have sustained him. What shall I do now for you, my son? Vs. 37d-f 2) The petition of Esau. Vs. 38 a) And Esau said to his father, Have you only one blessing, my father? Vs. 38a-c b) Bless me--me also, O my father!" And Esau lifted up his voice and wept. Vs. 38d-f 3) The proclamation of the curse to Esau. Vs a) Esau would have a meager existence, Then Isaac his father answered and said to him: Behold, your dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth, And of the dew of heaven from above. Vs. 39 * Actually it is a prophecy of the Edomites' future, their subjugation, violent nature towards God's people. b) Esau would always be at odds and break away from Jacob, By your sword you shall live, And you shall serve your brother; And it shall come to pass, when you become restless, That you shall break his yoke from your neck. Vs. 40 * Hostile to Israel when they come out of Egypt, Herod was the last Edomite. Num. 20:14-21, Ezk. 25:12-14, Obediah :41-46 The principal of sowing and reaping. 27:41 The hatred of Esau for Jacob. 1) So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him. Vs. 41a 2) And Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob. Vs. 41b-d 27:42 The resourcefulness of Rebekah. Vs. 42 1) The words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. Vs. 41a 2) So she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, Surely your brother Esau comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you. Vs. 42b-c 3) Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to my brother Laban in Haran. And stay with him a few days, until your brother s fury turns away, until your brother s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and bring you from there.
9 Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day? Vs a) Cleaver people usually get themselves in trouble and others also. b) Rebekah thought it would be a few days instead of twenty years. c) She never saw her son again. 4) Rebekah sought Isaac to send Jacob away under the guise that he might marry a pagan also like Esau. Vs. 46 * The first nine versus of chapter 28 would be a better chapter break
