1 Session 2 Not Alone God reveals His purpose to those He chooses, giving them purpose in the process. GENESIS 28:10-22 Loneliness is more than location. We can be in a familiar place, yet still be alone. We may be sitting in our apartment or house, surrounded by things that are important to us, and feel alone. Even the photographs seem to ignore us! We can also feel just as alone in a room full of people or walking down a city street surrounded by a mass of people. The feeling of aloneness can be overwhelming. What are some situations or experiences that may make a person feel alone? What other factors contribute to a person feeling alone? Date of My Bible Study: 19

2 UNDERSTAND THE CONTEXT GENESIS 27:41 28:22 After learning he had been tricked into giving the patriarchal blessing to Jacob, Isaac trembled uncontrollably (Gen. 27:33). He shook with fear, not just because he didn t bless his favored son, Esau, but also because the blessing was irrevocable. Everything, including the Abrahamic covenant, now belonged to Jacob (27:37). With a loud, bitter cry, Esau begged his father for a blessing (27:34), but the only blessing Isaac could give him was dreadful in comparison (27:38-40). His land would not be fruitful like Jacob s. Instead of ruling over nations and family with divine protection, his life would consist of warfare and servitude. Filled with rage, Esau vowed he would kill his twin after a time of mourning over the death of their father (27:41). Yet Isaac would live another many more years, dying at the age of 180 (35:28). Fearing her angry son would make good on his threat, Rebekah quickly devised a two-fold plan that would ensure Jacob s safety. First, she instructed Jacob to go to her brother, Laban, and stay with him for a few days (27:42-43). Laban lived in Haran, a distance of about five hundred miles from their home in Beer-sheba. Thinking Esau s wrath would be short-lived, she promised Jacob she would send for him when things settled down (27:44-45). Second, Rebekah told Isaac that Esau s foreign wives were making life miserable for her. Using the guise that she couldn t bear the same fate when Jacob married, she convinced Isaac to send Jacob to her brother s family for a wife (27:46 28:1). Isaac agreed, sending Jacob with his blessing (28:2-5). The only problem with Rebekah s plan was that Jacob s trip didn t last days, but twenty-one years (33:1-4). Little did she know, she would never see her favorite son again she died before Jacob could return home (49:31). On the run, Jacob s life took an unexpected turn before reaching Haran he met God. 3 EXPLORE THE TEXT PURPOSE REVEALED (GEN. 28:10-15) 10 Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. 11 He reached a certain place and spent the night there because the sun had set. He took one of the stones from the place, put it there at his head, and lay down in that place. 12 And he dreamed: A stairway was set on the ground with its top reaching the sky, and God s angels were going up and down on it. 13 The Lord was standing there beside him, saying, I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your offspring the land on which you are lying. 14 Your offspring will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out toward the west, the east, the north, and the south. All the peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. 15 Look, I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go. I will bring you back to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you. VERSES Leaving behind his worried mother, angry brother, and deceived father, Jacob left Beer-sheba and set out for Haran, the home of his mother s brother (27:43). When the sun had set, he stopped to rest at a certain place. The word place appears six times in this story (28:11,16-17,19). This place was far from home, far away from his mother s tender touch, and far away from the luxuries afforded him as Isaac s son. In this place, alone, there was no need for deception or trickery. Most likely, his thoughts were now filled with fear. Would Esau follow him and kill him? Would he have enough food or water? Would he find his way to Haran? Would his uncle welcome him under these circumstances? His deceptive actions brought him to this uninviting and uncomfortable place with only a stone for a pillow. Alone and exhausted, he watched the day turn to night as he lay in that place. The consequences of our sinful actions often take us to places we did not imagine. We fantasize of riches and fame, but sin offers no such reward (Jas. 1:14-15). Like Jacob, we may find ourselves without family and home if we bite at Satan s temptations. Session 2 : Not Alone 21

4 VERSE 12 In this solitary place, sleep overtook Jacob and he dreamed. Throughout the Bible, God communicated in a variety of ways, using a donkey (Num. 22:28), fingers (Dan. 5:5), and through the prophets (Isa. 10:24). Dreams were some of the ways God delivered His message. No longer do we need donkeys, fingers, prophets, or dreams to hear from God because we have His inspired Word the Bible. God loves us so much He has recorded His words so that we can find them anytime we need them. God s Word serves as the test for all truth claims. In his dream, Jacob saw a stairway that reached from earth to heaven. God s angels were going up and down on it. Angels are divine messengers who carry out God s will as He instructs them. These messengers travel between heaven and earth and operate equally in both realms. The stairway reminds us of God s personal involvement in the affairs on earth and in the hearts of humanity. While people, like Jacob, may leave God out of their lives, God never deserts them. Notice the movement of the angels on the stairway. They were already on earth, traveling up to heaven and then coming back down to earth again. God s angelic army had been busy on earth, long before Jacob s time. Not only were the angels accomplishing God s purposes on earth, but by ascending up the stairway, they were in constant communication with heaven. Nothing on earth escapes the watchful eye of God. Even in this solitary place, Jacob learned God was at work. How can believers be more aware of God s invisible activity around them? Why is it easy to take such activity for granted? 5 VERSES As far as Scripture reveals, this was Jacob s first encounter with God. Introducing Himself, God used the name Yahweh, the personal name for God, meaning the self-existent, eternal God (Ex. 3:15). The Book of Genesis, as well as the entire Bible, is a revelation of God, revealing who He is and how He deals with people. Just as God appeared to Jacob s grandfather and father, He appeared to Jacob personally. Jacob was about to learn that hearing the stories of God is not the same as having a personal relationship with Him. God extended to Jacob the covenant He made with Abraham and Isaac (Gen. 12:1-3; 13:16; 26:3-5), promising him offspring, land, a blessing through him, divine protection and presence, and that He would see Jacob safely home. God would appear to Jacob several more times, but this first meeting was significant because Jacob learned God was interested in him and was at work in his life. As God approached sinful Jacob, Jesus comes to us in spite of our sinfulness. He loves us as we are and blesses us though we are undeserving. By placing our faith in Jesus, our lives will never be the same. We can be confident in knowing that God is with us and guides us to fulfill His purposes in and through us. What is the connection between God s presence and His promises? How does His promised presence give hope and strength? 6 PRESENCE REALIZED (GEN. 28:16-19) 16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he said, Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it. 17 He was afraid and said, What an awesome place this is! This is none other than the house of God. This is the gate of heaven. 18 Early in the morning Jacob took the stone that was near his head and set it up as a marker. He poured oil on top of it 19 and named the place Bethel, though previously the city was named Luz. VERSES Lying down in a lonely, desolate place, Jacob woke up realizing he was never alone. Regardless of how far we run, God is already there waiting for us. Just as He met with Jacob, the Lord longs for an intimate meeting with us. Regardless of how far we run, God is already there waiting for us. Jacob was afraid, knowing he was in the presence of holy God. But he was also in awe that the God of heaven would meet with someone like him. Awareness of being in the presence of the Lord often elicits a response like Jacob s. Jacob realized the occasion should be memorialized. He took the stone that had been his pillow and set it up as a marker. He consecrated it by pouring oil on top of it. Too often, we don t record our significant events with God, forgetting when and where they occurred. What are the pillars for believers? Salvation, baptism, church membership, answering His call these are but a few of the times worth remembering and celebrating. Believers everywhere can joyfully and gratefully commemorate God s working in their lives. This place previously was named Luz, meaning almond tree. Now it would be known as Bethel, meaning house of God, for this is the place where Jacob met God. Although Jacob was still far from perfect, it was at Bethel that his life changed for the better. Bethel played a significant role in the history of God s people. Only Jerusalem is mentioned more often in the Old Testament. 24 Explore the Bible Personal Study Guide

7 Why is it important to commemorate God s past blessings? What happens when believers fail to remember His blessings? What are some appropriate ways believers might celebrate God s working in their lives? COMMITMENT MADE (GEN. 28:20-22) 20 Then Jacob made a vow: If God will be with me and watch over me during this journey I m making, if he provides me with food to eat and clothing to wear, 21 and if I return safely to my father s family, then the Lord will be my God. 22 This stone that I have set up as a marker will be God s house, and I will give to you a tenth of all that you give me. VERSES God demonstrates His commitment in tangible ways. In turn, our commitment to God should be just as tangible as was Jacob s. To demonstrate his commitment to God, Jacob made a vow. Jacob first recounted the blessings God gave to him: His presence (God will be with me), protection (watch over me), and provision (provides me with food and clothing), along with God s promise of a safe journey home (return safely to my father s family). Jacob was not bargaining with God, as if buying His favor; rather, he offered God his vow as confidence in God s promise. As a result of God s goodness, Jacob declared the Lord would be his forever God. Jacob s vow was an expression of trust not in deceptive plans but in God alone. Faith has always been a prerequisite in coming to God. Years later, as Jacob prepared to leave his uncle Laban, God spoke with Jacob again, reminding him of this vow (31:13). God always hears those who genuinely commit themselves to Him. Jacob s vow was the first time a vow is mentioned in the Bible. Coming from a man who cheated his way through life, Session 2 : Not Alone 25

8 this represented a completely different way of life for Jacob a life of surrender and faith. As another demonstration of his new commitment, Jacob promised to give God a tenth of all God had given him. Real change manifests itself in visible ways. The proof for Jacob was his tithe. In the New Testament, Zacchaeus demonstrated his heart change by committing to give back to those he cheated (Luke 19:1-10). Jacob promised to give back to God, even before the tithe was commanded, as his grandfather Abraham had done earlier (Gen. 14:20). By marking the place where he met God, and then giving God his vow and tithe, Jacob demonstrated that his life had changed. Giving a Tenth: An Overview Abraham gave to Melchizedek a tenth of the booty acquired in his victory over the Mesopotamian kings (Gen. 14:20). Jacob pledged to give a tenth of all his possessions as a voluntary expression of his faith and commitment to God (Gen. 28:22). The Mosaic law prescribed giving a tenth of the land s produce (Lev. 27:30). The people s tithe provided support for the Levites and priests (Num. 18:21,24). Failure to bring the tithe robbed God; God promised a blessing on His people if they gave the tithe (Mal. 3:9-10). Jesus warned that tithing without concern for more important demands of the law (justice, mercy, and faith) amounts to meaningless ritual (Matt. 23:23; Luke 11:42). Although years have passed and times have changed since the days of Jacob, one thing remains the same: believers are to take steps of faith in response to God s speaking to them. Faith and actions go hand in hand. Works are the evidence that we have heard and believed God s Word. What do our spiritual commitments reveal about our understanding of God? 9 IN MY CONTEXT Believers can be confident in knowing that God is with them and guides them to fulfill His purposes for them. Believers can joyfully and gratefully commemorate God s working in their lives. Believers are to take steps of faith in response to God s speaking to them. Reflect on Genesis 28:15. Write the verse on a card and refer to the card throughout this week in an effort to memorize it. How does the truth of this passage help you face a current challenge? List your spiritual milestones, including where they took place. Thank God for working in your life and never leaving you. Share with one person this week how God has and is working in your life. How can your group encourage others to take steps of faith? Consider using the personal testimonies of those who have already responded to God by faith, as the first step.
