May 1, 2016 AM Pastor Ken Hepner JOHN'S GOSPEL: JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD "Jesus Message in the Temple at the Feast" John 7:14 24 Introduction: The Gospel of John tells us the story of the fact that Jesus came into the world to come to our rescue, to enable us to be forgiven of the things that we all have done wrong. Today we re looking at tremendous truth that John wants everyone to see. Jesus lived the truth and spoke the truth of God to people from the essence of His being. He lived here and taught from the perspective of a deep and personal relationship with His Abba Father God. What His Father asked Jesus to speak He spoke. This is one of John s major themes. When Jesus opened up God s truth to people it showed them things in their own lives that they didn t want to see or deal with. Jesus pointed people to the Central Issue of Sin in the human heart: Self-Interest! His teaching opened to people to the truth that even religious expression of obedience can be done for selfish reasons, which is to make one s self look good to God and people. John tells us exactly why he wrote this testimony to Jesus. It is found in John 20:30, 31: "Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." In the message today we are studying John 7, the pivotal chapter in this Gospel John shares with us. From John 7:1 we will see a growing Hatred and Hostility toward Jesus from the religious leaders in Jerusalem that will ultimately culminate in Jesus being beaten nearly to death and placed on a Cross, having been given the death penalty. Let s also remember that this story of Jesus life, teaching, and mission of Jesus is written some 25 years or more after they happened. When John was written Matthew, Mark, and Luke had already been around for at least 15 years. So John s Gospel record of Jesus is his attempt to fill in for us events and stories of Jesus, things that Matthew, Mark, and Luke didn t tell us; things that really stuck in John s memories. John 7:1 says that Jesus was in Galilee, where He did many of His miraculous signs of His divinity and told man of His parables. Jesus spent time Discipling His Disciples! There s a reason why Jesus walked in Galilee. The religious leaders in Jerusalem and Judea wanted Jesus dead. They were convinced that He wasn t of God, that He threatened all that they held to be sacred. At His first Passover celebration Jesus cleansed the Temple in Jerusalem. He drove out the animals that had to be purchased in the temple requiring that only official sacrificial animals be offered, animals which, conveniently they sold! He drove out the 1

moneychangers. These men served the religious leaders by enforcing their rule that you couldn t spend street money in the Temple. So they charged an exorbitant 20% exchange rate to turn street money into temple money. The Temple cleansing really stoked up the religious leaders and they went after Jesus with a vengeance. Then at His second Passover, as recorded in John 5:1 11, Jesus healed the paraplegic man who lay in a helpless state at the Pool of Bethesda, then told the man to pick up his mat and go home. The day He did this healing act and told the man to pick up his mat and go home was on the Sabbath Day. This really fired them up! They went into such a religious frenzy about the man carrying his bed on the Sabbath that they completely missed that they were upset at a man who had been a paraplegic for 38 years standing in front of them able to walk. John 7 takes place in our October a full six months after the second Passover celebration, which takes place in our April. Three weeks ago we saw how Jesus brothers didn t believe in Him and tried to get Him to go to Jerusalem and show Himself to the gathered world there. Jesus said His fitting time or opportunity wasn t here yet. He told His brothers to go to the Feast and build their stick-built booth, acting as pilgrims on a journey to God. He wouldn t be building a little tent out of palm branches to show that He was on a journey to God. He actually had a very different message to share and we ll look at His message today. John 7:1, 2 give us the context of these teachings: The annual Jewish Feast of Tabernacles. This was something that every Jewish person looked forward to. The people left their homes and lived in small stick-built booths covered by leafy branches of trees, like Palm trees. It was a celebration that the religious establishment in Jerusalem demanded that people observe. It put Human Effort at pleasing God on Center Stage in Jerusalem for eight days. Jesus wasn t opposed to their religious observances, but He called into question their motivation doing them. Jesus was trying to get them to see and the real focus of the celebrations should have been on God the Father who had made all of these things available to them. Halfway through the Feast of Tabernacles went there and begin teaching in the courts of the Temple. The people had already been gathered by the tens of thousands for four days when Jesus showed up and began to teach them. Jesus went to the Feast of Tabernacles not as a pilgrim on a journey to God, but as a Revelation of the very Heart of God to those whose genuine search was seeking God. I. The Religious Leaders Were Amazed at His Teaching: John 7:14, 15 Not until halfway through the Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. The Jews were amazed and asked, How did this man get such learning without having studied? The religious leaders open up the discussion today with such a pompous and pious contempt for Jesus. It was clear to everyone that had even a minimal knowledge of the first two years of Jesus public life on earth, that the religious leaders in Jerusalem had very carefully checked out Jesus life, knew who were His parents, and His teaching credentials. They had concluded that He wasn t fit to teach the people, let alone lecture about spiritual life or the Scriptures in the Temple. 2

Their words here are full of contempt for Jesus basically calling Him an uneducated and lowly being, by comparison to themselves. Notice that they don t even Name Him. How did this man get such learning without having studied? Jesus was the son of a poor carpenter from Nazareth in Galilee, a town from which nothing much good had come. He had worked in the carpenter shop until He turned 30, at which time He began to preach, teach, and lead others in a public way. I find it amazing that these very insults that they were heaping on Jesus were heaped on His two followers Peter and John when they were arrested by some of these very same leaders. The story of their arrest is found in Acts 4. These two well-known followers of Jesus, Peter and John, were arrested after being used by Jesus to heal a crippled man at the Temple Gate Beautiful. They were put in jail overnight and then brought before the entire Sanhedrin council. The council demanded to know by what right or authority they had healed this man and taught the people. Here is their reply: It is by the Name of Jesus whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands healed. He is the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. This is the reaction of the religious leaders to Peter and John standing there boldly, speaking the truth about Jesus, in front of them all: When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. These men who were trained in the rabbinic schools of men like Hillel and Gamaliel believed no one could understand the Scriptures without having had formal education, having studied under one of the rabbis. In the face of that spiritual pride in their learning, Jesus and His followers came speaking plain Truth from the very Heart of God and they spoke it first person. Here is how this applies to you and me today. The truth is that no one has to have great intelligence or an advanced education to pick up a Bible, read the words of Jesus, and understand what He is saying. It is clear, honest, and straightforward. Jesus is pointing us to a relational love with God the Father that all of us may enjoy, regardless of our intellect or our educational level. The truth is people generally don t turn away from Following Jesus because He is too hard to understand. They turn away from Him because His Call to follow Him is too Demanding! Jesus longs for us to turn away from following our self-interested ways, to ask Him to forgive us, and to permit Him to come and live in our lives leading us to know how to live a life that pleases God the Father. The principle to those who have eyes to see: Don t judge Spiritual Things solely on the basis of Human Criteria. Some of the most godly and fruitful people in the world today are simple, ordinary, and from a worldly perspective uneducated. This has been universally true for 2000 years in the kingdom of Jesus. Those who know themselves to be small are much more apt to ask 3

Jesus to dwell in them and use them for His purposes than are those who see themselves as good enough to please God by their own goodness. II. Jesus Spoke God s Truth From His Relationship with His Father: John 7:16 and 18 Jesus answered, my teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me. He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. Jesus made a clear statement here that rocked His listeners back on their heels a bit. He said He spoke the truth that He was receiving firsthand from His Father God who sent Him into the world. Jesus didn t say that He was self-taught, or that He studied the Law and its interpretation while He was a carpenter s apprentice in Nazareth. He said His teaching didn t come from any earthly source at all. The source of His truth is the Father God who had sent Him into the world. Jesus understood things about the spiritual life of which His listeners were completely oblivious! He is standing in front of a human audience trying to help them all to see that there is another and completely different way to relate to God standing right in front of them and they have no eyes to see it at all. They had no concept that God the Father loved them or that He wanted to speak the truth, to write the truth of heaven in their hearts. For those in His audience who were under the tutelage of the religious leaders, their basic premise for relating to God was to know and obey the Law. They believed they were showing God how much they loved Him by meticulously keeping all of the 600 plus rules that the Scribes and Pharisees cherished. It was a celebration of their goodness and their disciplining themselves. Know the rules and do the rules. This is the recipe for a happy and healthy knowledge of God and it rendered them mean and miserable nitpickers who judged everyone by external standards. Their motivation for obedience to God was fear of reprisal if they didn t obey. Fear does not change its environment; it protects it! Reverential fear, holy love Changes its environment to the values of heaven. They Law said love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all of your mind, and all your strength. They substituted the word fear what might happen to you if you don t obey, for the word love. This is a far cry from being motivated by love for God and desiring to relate to Him from the depths of their hearts. Jesus told His listeners that the calling of God to every one of us is to love God, which is what it means to work for the honor of the One who sent us. Jesus said He didn t invent what He was saying. He claimed to be God-taught. This is the key to having truth dwelling in us and flowing from us. We welcome the Holy Spirit to live in our lives to making His Word Alive to us and Whisper to us His truth in our inmost being. Jesus says he who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a person of truth. Jesus speaks out of the depths of relational love to the Father. His words are truth because He lives what He loves. Love for God creates 4

truth in the heart because love surrenders itself to God. The same is true for you and me as we seek to live from the foundation stone of a personal relationship with God the Father. Love for God cherished within us will Create the presence of Truth in our hearts because love surrenders deeply to the will of God for our lives. III. The Will Is Central to Living the Christian Life: John 7:17 If anyone chooses to do God s will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. Jesus helps His listeners in the Temple courts and you and me to see how Crucial the Issue of our Will is when it comes to living a life that seeks to know and walk with God. Jesus said a willingness to do the will of God in our lives is a condition to a true knowledge of Him as our Savior and Redeemer. If we honestly seek to honor God, faithfully love God and want to obey Him from a heart of love, we ll choose to do His will for our lives and we will know for certain whether or not Jesus spoke and acted in God s truth! Jesus is talking about having a deep and powerful internal witness or verification of who He is and what He came to teach and to do. If any person desires, wants to do God s will for his/her life, the Eyes of our Hearts, the Windows of our Souls, will be opened and we will be able to see that Jesus is the revelation of God s heart to us all! Jesus calls us to love and obey God from the inside out, an obedience that is motivated by deep love for God. Jesus calls us to have a Surrendered Will, not to destroy our wills and thus make us mindless robots of God. The Spirit of Jesus works in all of our hearts so that we will come to the place of surrendering our will to His will. He calls us to a life of loving God deeply from the heart, to a surrendered will that wants to know and do the will of God as first our priority in life! It is not what we do that holds the primary place in our Christian life. It is our will, wholly given to love and honor God, because our Will holds the Power of Motivation for us, the why we do what we do questions. The will to do the will of God is the first prerequisite to living a Christian life that is satisfying to us and a blessing to God. What we do is an outcome of what we really desire to do from the depths of our hearts. The principle is: The Heart s Desires inform the Will and the will Motivates us to Action! Paul in writing to the Philippian believers wrote these words in 2:12, 13 therefore, my dear brothers, as you have always obeyed continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose. Here is a universal truth when it comes to learning, not just about spiritual things, but learning in general: The key to learning truth is to make the choice to Live By the truth that we already know! There are lots of people who have made intellect such a high priority in Christian living. The truth is that it isn t really the learned and the educated that have a corner on living to please God. It is generally the simple and the ordinary people, whose hearts are moved by loving surrender, who want to know and to do the will of God in their lives, whom Jesus uses for His glory on the earth! 5

IV. The Law of Mercy Trumps Legalism: John 7:19 24 Jesus told the Jewish leaders that were gathered in the Temple courts that they who said they knew the Law actually were breaking the Law they said they loved. He unmasked their ridiculous interpretations of the Law of God with their legalism and rigid keeping of man-made rules. He agreed with them that Moses gave them the Law. What He called into question was how utterly shamefully they interpreted it. He said, You are trying to kill me, violating one of the Ten Commandments you say you cherish. The crowd gathered there wasn t quite up to speed yet on the fact that their leaders wanted Him dead, so they accused Jesus of being nuts. They raised the question of His competence to teach. Jesus called into question their competence to Hear the truth and Obey it. Jesus came to establish a higher set of values, an internal law of the heart. The religious leaders who heard Him speak about these higher values, were such legalists, so intent on keeping all of the man-made rules based on God s laws that they couldn t even begin to hear Jesus well, let alone come to understand what He was trying to get them to see. Jesus illustrated for them the truth that He came to establish a law of mercy and compassion in human hearts. The principle Jesus is building upon is that one act of God s work on the earth may in fact cancel out or be a higher standard of righteous values than another aspect of God s work. They broke the Sabbath Law to keep the circumcision laws. He pointed them back to their anger at what He had done on the Sabbath day at His second Passover celebration, in raising the man who was paralyzed and having him carry his mat to his house. He told them that they do work in the act of circumcising a male child on the eighth day of his life even if it falls on the Sabbath. So they make the law of circumcision of a higher value than the law of the Sabbath. Jesus was asking them about their incredible blindness. How is it that you can t see the truth? If you can break a Sabbath law for a ceremonial rite, then why shouldn t we break the Sabbath law for an act of God s mercy and complete healing of a man s body? How was it that they couldn t see that healing a person is a higher value than rigid Sabbath keeping? It was because they were blinded to see and know God personally by their focus of keeping their place as the people who established the rules. Then the chocolate and strawberry syrup and maraschino cherries went on the Banana Split Jesus was painting. Stop making superficial judgments on what looks good to you and to other people, whose opinions you prize! Make Right Judgments that are based on the Love and the Mercy of God! There are no words minced here. Right judgments in their hearts would lead them to conclude that what Jesus had done in healing the paralyzed man was actually in keeping with a higher law of love and mercy! Jesus came to establish a higher law. Acting in Love and Mercy are more important than rigid Rule Keeping. 6

Acting in L and M is more important than rule-keeping. 8
