Read Acts 18:18-23 Paul Returns to Antioch and Departs. Acts 18: Part I Prayer: Lord Jesus, glorify Your wonderful, Holy Name through this message. Allow this message to strengthen Your people in the faith. Use this message for Your Kingdom, Purpose, and Glory. Otherwise, it is a colossal waste of time. In Your name, Lord Jesus, Amen! 1. Paul s DEDICATION to the Lord Jesus Christ 18 Acts 18:18 (KJV 1900) 18 And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow. Paul continued preaching and teaching the Word of God in Corinth for a good while. The Lord s design for the Church s growth, stability, and exaltation of Christ is through the faithful preaching and teaching of the Word of God. From Corinth, Paul began his journey back to his home fellowship in Antioch of Syria with Priscilla and Aquila who decided to leave Corinth as well. As we have considered in previous messages, godly friends are a blessing to those who have them. This godly couple made the decision to travel with Paul and see what the Lord Jesus would have for them. They were not bound to their careers, their business, making money, or their retirement plans. Their plans were to serve Christ wherever He would lead them. Are our plans to serve Christ? Are we godly friends to others? Once they arrived at the Corinthian port city of Chencrea (SEN-CREE- AH, in the Saronic Gulf 7 miles east of Corinth), Paul shaved his head. He shaved off all the hair on his head because, at some point in the past, he had taken a vow out of love for the Lord Jesus Christ. What kind of vow required the shaving of the head once the vow was fulfilled? This was the New Covenant version of the Nazarite vow. 1

Paul Returns to Antioch and Departs. Acts 18: Part I God s Law of the Nazarite was graciously given to the Jewish people as a beautiful way to express their love to the Lord. Through obedience to specific, ceremonial rules, they could express this love in a real, tangible way. The Law of the Nazarite is found in the book of Numbers: Numbers 6:1 5 (NASB95) 1 Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, When a man or woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to dedicate himself to the LORD, 3 he shall abstain from wine and strong drink; he shall drink no vinegar, whether made from wine or strong drink, nor shall he drink any grape juice nor eat fresh or dried grapes. 4 All the days of his separation he shall not eat anything that is produced by the grape vine, from the seeds even to the skin. 5 All the days of his vow of separation no razor shall pass over his head. He shall be holy until the days are fulfilled for which he separated himself to the LORD; he shall let the locks of hair on his head grow long 8 All the days of his separation he is holy to the LORD 13 Now this is the law of the Nazirite when the days of his separation are fulfilled, he shall bring the offering to the doorway of the tent of meeting 18 The Nazirite shall then shave his dedicated head of hair at the doorway of the tent of meeting, and take the dedicated hair of his head and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of peace offerings. While in Corinth or perhaps prior to, Paul desired to show his gratitude to Christ and his love for Christ through the observance of the Nazarite vow. In this way, Paul expressed His dedication to the Lord Jesus. It was 2

Paul Returns to Antioch and Departs. Acts 18: Part I a personal commitment on his part to tell the Lord how much he loved Him and thanked Him for the love and grace that He had shown to Paul. Though he did not offer sacrifices as the Old Covenant required, he did allow his hair to grow, and he did shave his head. Dedication to the Lord Jesus Christ is the mark of a true Christian. While others may call this legalism, the Lord Jesus Christ calls this dedication. There are those who follow rules because they are rules; there are others who follow rules out of love for the Lord Jesus. We are called to love the Lord Jesus and to express this love for Him through obedience to His commands: John 14:21 (NKJV) 21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him. 1 John 5:3 (NASB95) For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. Do we keep our Lord s commands? Do we love the Lord? Are His commandments a burden to us? The Lord s commands are very simple: Deuteronomy 6:5 (NKJV) 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. Matthew 22:36 40 (NKJV) 36 Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said to him, You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. John 13:34 35 (NKJV) 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. 3

1 Corinthians 16:22 (NKJV) If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed. O Lord, come! The Lord s commands are simple: Love God and love one another. Love will do no harm to another. Paul loved the Lord and took the vow of a Nazarite to consecrate himself to loving service to His master. I pray that we love the Lord Jesus and dedicate ourselves to loving service in His glorious name. 2. Paul s DESIRE for Christ and His People Acts 18:19 21 (KJV 1900) 19 And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not; 21 But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus. Paul in Ephesus Paul s return home included a brief stay in Ephesus. Ephesus was in Asia Minor or modern day Turkey. As the capital of the province of Asia during Roman occupation, Ephesus enjoyed significant prosperity due to its strategic location, banking and commerce. 1 famous for its temple of Artemis (Latin, Diana), one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, famous also for its commerce and wealth. It was the most important city of Asia Minor and its ruins are impressive still today. 2 EPHESUS Most important city of the Roman province of Asia, located on the western shore of Asia Minor (modern Turkey). 1 Porter, S. E., & Evans, C. A. (2000). In Dictionary of New Testament background: a compendium of contemporary biblical scholarship (electronic ed.). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press. 2 Krodel, G. A. (1986). Acts. Minneapolis, MN: Augsburg Publishing House. 4

Ephesus was built on a natural harbor whose waves, according to the Roman writer Pliny the Elder, used to wash up to the temple of Diana. Ephesus was described by Strabo, an early Greek geographer, as the largest commercial center west of the Taurus Mountains. It was also well known as the guardian of the temple of Artemis, or as the Romans called her, Diana (Acts 19:34). 3 In Ephesus, Paul reasoned with the Jews in the synagogue. The Holy Spirit has made certain that future generations would know the priorities of those whom He has called to apostolic ministry. Paul s commitment and determination to share the Gospel is encouraging and refreshing. True apostles boldly declare the Gospel of Christ wherever the Holy Spirit sends them. Paul was obedient to the Lord Jesus s calling in his life: Galatians 1:15 16 (NASB95) 15 But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother s womb and called me through His grace, was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood Paul knew who had called him to apostolic ministry, and he knew what that ministry involved the exemplary commitments to live, preach, and teach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ both to the Jew first and also to the Gentile: Romans 1:16 (KJV 1900) 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. When Paul entered the synagogue in Ephesus, he reasoned with the Jews from the Scriptures as was his pattern. 3 Elwell, W. A., & Comfort, P. W. (2001). In Tyndale Bible dictionary. Wheaton, IL: Tyndale House Publishers. 5

Reasoned in the Greek means to present intelligent discourse. Paul presented intelligent arguments to prove Yeshua was the Messiah of Israel. He did not expect his hearers to believe him simply because he was an apostle and to take his word for it. Rather, he based his doctrines on the Scriptures in order to persuade his Jewish audience to believe in Yeshua of Nazarreth. Paul defines the calling and purpose of his apostolic ministry in Colossians: Colossians 1:24 29 (NKJV) 24 I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, 26 the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. 27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. 29 To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily. A true apostle teaches the Word of God, so believers will believe and live the Gospel of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. While teaching the Word in the Ephesian synagogue, the Lord does a marvelous work the Jews desired him to stay longer with them. Did we read the Word correctly? Yes, we did. We never know the outcome of our obedience to Christ in the area where we are called to serve. Here we see not persecution and insurrection but hungry learners for the Gospel of Christ! What a blessing for Paul. Though the Jews responded favorable to the Gospel of their Messiah, Paul was not content to remain. He was resolute to return to Jerusalem to attend the feast. Scholars state that the feast was probably the Passover or Pentecost. Though Paul was a messianic Jew through and 6

through, he still desired to observe the feasts ordained by his Lord for his people to keep. However, he did not do this out of legalism but out of simplistic joy to celebrate Christ in the Passover (or Pentecost). 4 Thus, Paul left Ephesus, yet his desire was that they would know his heart to return to them again if God willed. While his heart was that the Ephesians would know he would return to them, his plans were ultimately yielded to the Lord no one but the Lord Jesus, Himself, would keep Paul from returning to Ephesus! Paul was not masquerading through holy language the true intentions of his heart. Often, we hear believers say, If the Lord wills. Sometimes it seems this phrase is used simply because the person stating it doesn t want to say no or reveal true intentions. They are wishy-washy or want a way out of a commitment. If we say, If the Lord wills, then we need to mean it. We need to understand that when we use this terminology in our response to others, we are stating that only the Lord will keep us from being there, performing that, etc. We should not say, If the Lord wills, if we never intend to do something but don t want the ones to whom we have spoken to know what is really in our hearts. That is deception. That is lying. Colossians 3:9 (NKJV) Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds Learn to say, No, if you do not intend to do this or that: Matthew 5:37 (NKJV) 37 But let your Yes be Yes, and your No, No. For whatever is more than these is from the evil one. 4 Paul s epistles denounce legalism and Judaizing the Gospel of the Messiah. His ceremonial acts are the result of his Jewishness and celebration of the Lordship of Yeshua the Messiah of Israel. No thorough student of Scripture will conclude that Paul observed the Nazarite vow or a particular feast in order to fulfill the law of Moses and produce his own righteousness. To believe this is unbiblical and dishonest. What Paul did, he did to celebrate his Lord. 7

If we know that we cannot possibly do something, then we should say, No. Our Lord Jesus gives us permission to say, No. On the other hand, if we mean to say to someone that, Nothing but the Lord, Himself, will keep me from being there or performing this or that, then by all means we should communicate as Paul, If the Lord wills. Let your yes be yes and your no be no. Prayer: Lord Jesus, strengthen our hearts to be dedicated to You to love You and keep Your commands. Help us to be truthful to one another. We love You, Lord Jesus. In Your name, Lord Jesus, Amen. Bless the People May you be wholly dedicated to the Lord Jesus Christ. May your desire be to serve Christ and His people. May your speech be lovingly truthful and lovingly honest toward all to whom you associate. May your yes be yes and our no be no. May you seek the Lord s will above all else. God bless you in Christ Jesus. 8
