Two problems: 1. Give up and quit.
Two problems: 1. Give up and quit. 2. Grow cold and coast.
WHY does this happen?
Counterfeit Fuel: Non-Christian motivation for Christian activity.
1 peter 5:2 2 Shepherd God's flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but willingly, as God would have you; not out of greed for money but eagerly.
Philippians 1:15 15 To be sure, some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of good will.

When a man loves a woman Can't keep his mind on nothin' else He'd trade the world For a good thing he's found If she is bad, he can't see it She can do no wrong Turn his back on his best friend If he puts her down
When a man loves a woman He grows an outrageous mullet Spend his very last dime Trying to hold on to what he needs He'd give up all his comforts And sleep out in the rain If she said that's the way It ought to be
When a man loves a woman, he will do all the Christian stuff he needs to do to be with her. Dan Rude

OUTLINE Scene 1: Jesus and Simon Scene 2: Jesus and the Woman Scene 3: Jesus, the Woman, and Simon
Scene 1: Jesus and Simon
Luke 7:36 36 Then one of the Pharisees invited him to eat with him. He entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.
Luke 11: When he left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose him fiercely and to cross-examine him about many things;
Luke 11: they were lying in wait for him to trap him in something he said.
Common courtesy: v.44, You gave me no water for my feet. v.45, You gave me no kiss. v.46, You gave me no olive oil.
Simon treated Jesus with callous, calculated contempt. He carefully avoided every custom that would make the Lord feel at home. And all the guests and onlookers knew it as they took their places around the table. Kent Hughes

SCENE 2: Jesus and the woman
Luke 7:37 37 And a woman in the town who was a sinner found out that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house.

Luke 7: And a woman in the town who was a sinner found out that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house. She brought an alabaster jar of perfume
Luke 7: and stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to wash his feet with her tears. She wiped his feet with her hair, kissing them and anointing them with the perfume.

Scene 3: Jesus, the woman, and Simon
Luke 7: When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "This man, if he were a prophet, would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him-she's a sinner!"
Luke 7: Jesus replied to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." He said, "Say it, teacher."
Luke 7: "A creditor had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
Luke 7: Since they could not pay it back, he graciously forgave them both. So, which of them will love him more?"
Luke 7: Simon answered, "I suppose the one he forgave more." "You have judged correctly," he told him.
Luke 7: Turning to the woman, he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she, with her tears, has washed my feet and wiped them with her hair.
Luke 7: You gave me no kiss, but she hasn't stopped kissing my feet since I came in.
Luke 7: You didn't anoint my head with olive oil, but she has anointed my feet with perfume.
Luke 7: Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; that's why she loved much. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little."
Luke 7: Then he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
Luke 7: Those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this man who even forgives sins?"
Luke 7: And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."

1 Timothy 1: This saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners and I am the worst of them.
1 Timothy 1: But I received mercy for this reason, so that in me, the worst of them, Christ Jesus might demonstrate his extraordinary patience as an example to those who would believe in him for eternal life.
Galatians 2: For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live for God.

2 Corinthians 5: And he died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for the one who died for them and was raised.
Notice two things: 1. Jesus claims to forgive sin.
Luke 7:49 49 Those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this man who even forgives sins?"
Why is this claim remarkable?
Why is this claim remarkable? a. This is a claim to be God.
Psalm 51:4 4 Against you you alone I have sinned and done this evil in your sight. So you are right when you pass sentence; you are blameless when you judge.
Why is this claim remarkable? a. This is a claim to be God. b. Our greatest need is forgiveness.
Notice two things: 1. Jesus claims to forgive sin. 2. The forgiveness Jesus offers is costly to Himself.
