"The film is inspired by the story of Noah. While artistic license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, values, and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide. The biblical story of Noah can be found in the book of Genesis." This is Paramount s explanatory message attached to marketing materials after the recommendation was made by the National Religious Broadcasters association
The director and writer are both Jewish, while the director is an admitted atheist. 2. As such the Noah movie contains more of the Jewish Midrash and accompanying mysticism regarding the Nephillim (Watchers) than it does the Bible facts. 3. It is also very environmental and is meant to serve as an ancient commentary on how our own civilization is doomed to destruction if we don t change our ways. 58

The Backdrop Genesis
Adam & Eve Genesis 2:16-17 provides the original command to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 3:1-6: The tempter s lie and the woman s lust coupled with pride lead her to eat, while Adam takes of her and eats. In the movie the fruit is portrayed as having the shape of an apple, but the look of a pomegranate that is literally throbbing (like the heart of an animal). 2. Adam is distracted by the serpent shedding his skin (already on the ground) while Eve eats and then gives to Adam who eats. 3. This is man s initial disobedience! 4. Romans 5:12 (NKJV) 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned 61
Cain & Abel Genesis 4:1-5 portrays their birth and both boys bringing an offering before God. But Cain is not pleased and kills his brother (Genesis 4:6 8). But notice God s reaction in 4:10. Cain is cast out as a vagabond. Cain s offering is not accepted, while Abel s is which results in Cain s fallen countenance. 2. The movie takes the separation of Cain and interprets it to be that Cain s line, fallen, receives help from fallen angels called the Watchers (rock people in the movie or Nephillim from Gen. 6:4, giants in the NKJV)) who then build a large industrial civilization swallowing up both the earth and the descendants of Seth until only Noah, his sons, and Methuselah (living as a shaman like character on a mountain) are left. 3. This is where the movie takes a strong turn toward environmentalism, even having Noah kill three men at one point to protect a wounded animal. 62
Seth Seth is born following Abel s murder. His name is literally, Appointed as Eve saw him appointed by God in the place of Abel. Genesis 4:26 reveals that it is Seth s line that begins to worship God. The last statement of calling on God is important because it is Seth s lineage that begins to follow God. 2. Enoch, who walked with God and was taken (Gen. 5:21-24), is of Seth s lineage. 3. The same is true of Methuselah and Noah. 63
Lamech of Cain Genesis 4:23 24 (NKJV) 23 Then Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me. 24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold. What a poetic rejection of God! One note on Lamech (not Noah s father), he bears Tubal-Cain who in the movie becomes the nemesis of Noah, is the last great king, and even sneaks onto the ark. It is this speech by Lamech that is the last thing we read before entering into the genealogy that leads us to the flood. SIN is the consuming theme of Genesis 3-4 and it is the last taste in our mouth until we arrive at the words of Genesis 6. This is not to say there is not hope for it is found in Genesis 3:15 and it is found in the passages of Genesis 5 that describe Enoch. There is still some righteousness, but it will quickly dwindle. 64
Man s Wickedness Genesis 6:1-5 65
Lust Reigns Genesis 6:1 2 (NKJV) 1 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. Here again is lust at play, just like in the garden Lust that looks, desires, and then takes in multitude. 2. The taking of many is a disregard for what God had originally set up in Genesis 2 for the marriage relationship (which Noah, having one wife, follows correctly). 3. Who are the sons of God? Some say fallen angels because of Job 1:6; the proximity of fallen angels in Peter s talk of the flood in 2 Peter 2:4-5; who are also mentioned in Jude 5-6 in the context of Egypt and Sodom and Gomorroah. 2. Others think the lineage of Seth because it is they who called upon God and Adam is called the son of God in Luke 3: Considering that Genesis 6:3 has God saying He shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh, the context is clearly one of human men marrying human women. 4. Therefore, we are probably talking about the descendants of Seth intermarrying. 66
God Numbers Genesis 6:3 4 (NKJV) 3 And the Lord said, My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years. 4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. According to Answers in Genesis, looking through the genealogies gives us a date for the flood of 1656 years after creation, which means that God makes this statement only 1536 years after creating man. 2. Strive indicates a staying with God would not remain with man forever, sin was separating! 3. The word giants in v. 4 is the word nephillim and it can relate to fallen ones or mighty ones as the meaning is somewhat unknown. 4. But the bigger point is that while men were seeking glory and greatness, God had numbered his days. 67
Sin Consumes Genesis 6:5 (NKJV) 5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Man s actions and heart had become completely corrupt. All he could think about was evil! We know that only eight souls will be saved in the ark. 2. Out of all of creation, only 8 could be found faithful? Does this remind you of Sodom and Gomorrah? 68
Sin s Consequences Genesis 6:6-7 69
Destruction Genesis 6:6 7 (NKJV) 6 And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 So the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them. We will focus in on God s reaction of sorrow and wrath next week along with His concern for His creation in general. 2. But let us understand that Sin will consume us, bring sorrow to anyone that loves us (especially God), and eventually grind us to destruction! 70
Why It Still Matters? Because all are still sold under sin, without a single one of us being righteous (Romans 3:9-18; 23). Because being in sin, we are all still subject to death (Romans 6:23). Because God is still grieved, willing to save us (2 Peter 3:1-9).! Romans 3:9 18 (NKJV) 9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin. 10 As it is written: There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one. 13 Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit ; The poison of asps is under their lips ; 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 And the way of peace they have not known. 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes Peter 3:1 9 (NKJV) 1 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), 2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, 3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation. 5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the heavens 71
Yet There Is Hope! Genesis 6:8 (NKJV) 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Like Genesis 3:15, in one of man s darkest hours God provides hope. If you are in the darkness of Sin, He is still providing hope today through Christ Jesus! Peter 1:3 5 (NKJV) 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. But how did they receive this hope? 1 Peter 1:22 24 (NKJV) 22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, 24 because All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away, See the connection between Baptism to the resurrection to then hope! 1 Peter 3:21 22 (NKJV) 21 There is also an antitype which now saves us baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him. 72
