3 Wilderness Period (Overview). Exodus :37-40::38; Leviticus, Numbers & Deuteronomy; Exodus ended with Dedication of the Tabernacle. Leviticus explains how the Tabernacle was used. In Exodus God gets his people out of Egypt; in Leviticus he tries to get Egypt out of his people (Smith OT Made Simple 40). Covers only about a month at Sinai. 3. Numbers records the Journey of the Israelites from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land (murmuring and marching). Covers 39 years. 4. Deuteronomy records Moses last words before his death; at least four farewell addresses from Moses (see Deuteronomy 30:-0).

10 Government Cities of Refuge. There were six Cities of Refuge.. OT Law required a murderer to be put to death by the nearest male relative of the deceased. A person who claimed to have killed someone accidentally would travel, assisted, to a city of refuge. 3. He would be transferred to a neutral place for trial. 4. If found guilty, he was handed over to the avenger of blood ; otherwise, he returned to the city of refuge and remained there until the high priest died then he could leave as a free man.

11 Snapshot Moment of Truth The LORD said to Moses, "Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders." (Num 3:- NIV) See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they un-walled or fortified? How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land." (Num 3:8-0 NIV) "We can't attack those people; they are stronger than we are." (Num 3:3 NIV) "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them." (Num 3:3-33 NIV) "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them." (Num 4:7-9 NIV)

12 Snapshot People with a Short Memory The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, "If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost-- also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!" (Num :4-6 NIV) Moses heard the people of every family wailing at the entrance to their tents. The LORD became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled. He asked the LORD, "Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me? (Num :0- NIV) But Moses said, "Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and you say, 'I will give them meat to eat for a whole month! Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them? The LORD answered Moses, "Is the LORD's arm too short? Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you. (Num :-3 NIV)
