1 3/7 Wednesday John 8 The Great I Am [1] One of the features unique to John s gospel are the I AM sayings of Jesus. These are statements in which two simple Greek words, ego eimi, are heard on the lips of Jesus. These two Greek words can mean a variety of things. They can be used to say It is I, or I am he, or I exist, or most commonly I AM. i These are actually very commonplace words. Are you hungry? Yes, I am. Yet as with much of John s Gospel there is more than meets the eye. To understand why these words are important, we need to go back to Exodus 3. The Israelites were enslaved in Egypt. Moses was living in the desert, tending his father-in-law s flock. One day he saw a bush burning. When he approached to investigate, he heard a voice calling out to him. [2] Do not come any closer Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.i am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. (Ex. 3:5-6 NIV) The voice went on to say, I hear the cries of my people and I m going to set them free from their captivity. And you are the man. Now you go to Egypt and lead them to freedom. [3] To which Moses responds: Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me, What is his name? Then what shall I tell them? (Exodus 3:13 NIV) 1
2 This was a polytheistic culture they had many gods and Moses wanted to know which god was speaking. If he knew the god s name, then he could call on that god as well. Here s the important part as it relates to John s gospel account of the I AM sayings of Jesus: ii [4] God said to Moses, I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I am has sent me to you. (Exodus 3:14 NIV) God s name given to Moses, is I AM. What kind of name is that? In Hebrew, the word that is translated as I Am Who I Am is the Hebrew word Yahweh (sometimes pronounced Jehovah). Throughout the Old Testament, this is the personal name for God. Still, what an odd name. By revealing this name God is basically saying I AM being itself. I AM the source of life. I AM existence itself. In other words, everything that exists is contingent upon God for its existence. Every molecule, atom, subatomic particle, every cell in your body derives its energy and existence from God. God defines what Being is. This is why, at the burning bush, God said his name was I AM. It s why Paul could say in Acts 17:28a In God we live and move and have our being. I AM (Yahweh) became the personal name for God. The name was so revered that by the 4 th century BC, faithful Jews would not even speak what came to be known with reverence as the Name. (Not to be confused with He who must not be named from Harry Potter) The name of Yahweh was considered so holy that when it appeared in scripture text you would say another name less revered such as Lord. iii (Do we have the same regard for God s name?) 2
3 [5] In our reading, Jesus, in a confrontation with the Pharisees makes the bold claim before Abraham was, I AM! (John 8:58 NIV) Jesus was saying that the same God who met Moses was now talking with them. When Jesus used the words, I AM, to describe himself, he was claiming to be God. That s why the Pharisees got so upset. To them, this was blasphemy (an act or offense against God). Blasphemy, like the sin of adultery, carried the penalty of stoning. In John s gospel, the blasphemous phrase I AM is spoken by Jesus over and over again. In some cases, the words stand alone, like in John 8. Other times, the I AM is followed by a metaphor meant to further connect Jesus with God drawing on themes from the Old Testament. [6] I AM the bread of life. (John 6:35, 48, 51) I AM the light of the world. (John 8:12; 9:5) I AM the gate (John 10:7,9) I AM the good shepherd. (John 10:11, 14) I AM the resurrection and the life. (John 11:25) I AM the way, the truth and the life. (John 14:6) I AM the true vine. (John 15:1) Each of these images help to describe God. John wants us to not only know God but believe and trust in the God revealed to us in Jesus. You might be thinking. I can t feel or see Jesus. How do I know he s there? [7] There is a scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when Indiana finds himself on a cliff needing to get to the other side of a huge cavern. The instructions on his paper say to leap but there is nothing for him to leap on to! Finally he takes a 3
4 deep breath and steps out into the nothingness. Just as he puts his weight down into the air, an invisible bridge appears. The bridge was there all the time. But Indiana didn t know it was there until he took a step of faith. When Jesus calls himself I AM, he reminds us that although he is the God of the past, present, and future, we experience his presence in the now. Like that bridge, he is there for you when you need him. You may not be able to see him with your eyes; but if you look closely, you can experience his presence all around you. Feel him in the hug of a good friend. Hear him in the conviction of your heart. See him on the faces of the people you love. And just at that moment when you need him most, you ll find he s right there with you. All it takes to see him is a step of faith. iv [8] Charles Swindoll, in his book Insights on John writes: I find it tragically ironic these masters of the manuscript [that is the Pharisees], dedicated guardians of the scriptures, witnessed the life and deeds of Jesus and yet failed to recognize the Living Word when he stared them in the face. v Makes me wonder, what do we make of this Jesus? Are we ready to cast stones at him like the Pharisees? Or throw ourselves at his feet and accept him as our Lord and Savior? Which will it be? Your eternal destiny depends on whether you accept him or reject him. i Adam Hamilton, John: The Gospel of Light and Life (Nashville: Abingdon Press, 2015), 60. ii Hamilton, 61. iii Hamilton, 62. 4
