Shabbat Service Arie s Favorite Jewish Songs FROM OUR SENIOR RABBI CELEBRATING OUR CANTOR Two weeks ago Cantor Arie Shikler announced his retirement effective June 30, Arie has been a shining star in our family this past half century. In just a few more weeks, you will receive our annual catalogue. Our theme this year will be Celebrating the Music, Life, and Soul of Cantor Arie Shikler. You will see many events and opportunities to share your good wishes, your memories and your appreciation for Arie s presence in your life. So, with your permission, I would like to begin this process. In the fall of the year 2000, I came to interview to become the senior rabbi of Shir Ha-Ma alot. During one of the nights of the interview, Arie took me for Chinese food in Laguna Beach. For a second I thought I was with a celebrity. Every other person said, Hey, Arie. Hi Chamoody! Hello Cantor. I thought for a second he might start signing autographs. It became clear in that moment that Arie held a special place in people s hearts. And very quickly, he began to hold a special place in my heart. You see, Arie is not just my cantor, he is my brother. I cherish the bond we share on the bimah, in the office, when we go to lunch or the times we find ourselves simply laughing at the silliest things. Arie told me during my interview process that SHM was a like a garden and with the right watering and tending it was ready to bloom. I think 17 years later, our synagogue family is blooming beautifully. Rabbi King gave SHM life. I may have helped it grow. But it is Arie who has always been the backbone of our family the chief gardener, if you will. Arie s music has punctuated the chapters of our lives. He has brought us comfort in times of challenge and joy in times of happiness. And he is has always been there. He is a rock of support and love. My dear friend Arie, I can t wait to celebrate with you each day in this coming year. You deserve it and then some. Your legacy is in the melodies that ring in our ears that you have sung, in the kindness you have brought to our world, and in the smile you share. I know I speak for everyone when I say that when you sing, it is as if you are singing only to me. As the Talmud says, Words from the heart, enter the heart. This year is going to be filled with words from all of our hearts to tell you how special you are to us and how amazing your contribution to our lives have been. Arie, this next year, feel the love of the Orange County Jewish community which you helped to build and sustain. We have dedicated this year s theme to you because you have dedicated your life to us. We thank you from the very essence of our beings. Friends, please join us this year to celebrate our cantor, Cantor Arie Shikler. Please look for information each month at the different opportunities to pay tribute to this incredible man. 3 Thank You CELEBRATING CANTOR SHIKLER FROM OUR CANTOR FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE! 50 YEARS LATER Our warmest thanks to all of the people who baked for our Oneg at Rabbi Lewis shabbat service on May 12th. Arie s Favorite Jewish Songs Friday, July 28th at 7:30 pm Cantor Arie Shikler (at Mormon Center, 23 Lake Drive, Irvine) The Hollander Family Cantorial Chair I was a reserve radio officer assigned to the Southern Command headed by General Yeshayahu (Shaikeh) Gavish. At the time I was employed by the Israeli Post Authority that later would become Bezek. As one of five ex radio officers working shifts in the newly formed National Communication Control, we were all anxious to be called to duty. On the way home every day I felt the tension on the streets. Every day that went by I was wondering why I wasn t called yet. Less and less young men were seen outside. We switched a large percentage of the country s telephone lines to the military and government. Finally one night I got a phone call at my parent s home that Motkeh will pick me up at 5 A.M. My field uniform was already folded and waiting by the door for weeks. I said goodbye to my parents and left. The rest of the group was already in the small car and we headed south to Beer Sheva. Routine takes over when you get ready for battle. We call it PAKAL 4 JULY 2017 With about thirty radio and communication reservists under my command, we were assigned to Lt. Colonel (Ztl) Yekutiel (Kuti) Adam Brigade 99 commander. Our brigade was a third of the division under the command of Gen. Arik Sharon, Division 38. We drove down to K tziot on the Sinai border and with our trucks dug into the sand under camouflage nets. It was mid-may and very hot. My guys laid down a wire network of field telephones so all the officers could be briefed. No radios were allowed to be on, not even receivers. Some guys got bit by yellow scorpions and taken to the hospital. The field shower was the perk of the day. For the next two weeks we d meet at Kuti s tent every night to get a verbal briefing from him. We studied the plan and were ready to go. Almost every night Kuti would say we attack tomorrow at 4 a.m. and later the order would be cancelled. Finally on the night of June 5th, Kuti gave the go command; we folded the nets and tents and got on the jeeps and trucks. Our brigade included two battalions of Nahal paratroopers and one battalion of reservists. There were 14,000 soldiers under Sharon and 16,000 soldiers under Gen. Salach El-Din Muchsan and Gen. Said Najib. Sharon had a Scout battalion on light French tanks, Tank Brigade made of 14 reservists, two battalions of Super Sherman tanks, and two more on half-trucks. Battalion 63 of new Centurion tanks of regular duty crews with additional Scout Company on AMX French tanks and Engineering Company. A paratrooper elite reservists brigade under Dani Matt had two battalions. Two more infantry battalions and one tank company, six Artillery battalions using Howitzer 155mm and 105mm, and Division Engineering Core battalion were also included. At 5 A.M. we turned our receivers on and as we formed a caravan heading south I heard our pilots on their own frequency reporting hundreds of Continued on page 14 MEMORY MITZVAH MENTSCH MAKING MAKING MEANING Diane Lindsey Mindy Zive Ellen Arrow Shelley Frank Sandy Schekman Linda Greene Hope Snyder Stephanie Mitchell Charlotte Pinsky This service features congregational melodies and eclectic, contemporary music which compliment the creative service booklet compiled by Cantor Shikler, specifically for this service. Serah Lukoff Robin Saltzer Music is a powerful tool for evoking the inner space within which transformative prayer can happen. The ancients knew this, and music was a big part of the ancient temple ritual. It s hard to believe that fifty years ago I was in the Sinai Peninsula fighting with my Israeli brothers in the Six Day War. When Egypt s president Gamal Abdel Nasser closed the Tiran Straights and moved his army into Sinai amid many fiery speeches featuring throwing Israel and the Jews into the sea, it was clear the war was coming our way. We also presented and voted on the slate for the Board of Trustees for as well as presented and voted on the budget for next year. NOTE: A few updates post-meeting were included in this Article. Board Slate The process for becoming a Board member is as follows: 1. Make it known to a Board member, the clergy, staff, me that you are interested in serving on the Board. We are interested in developing leaders in the community, so even if you aren t currently actively involved, we can find ways to get you engaged. 2. The Nominating Committee, appointed by the President, meets and presents candidates to the President for the possible open positions on the Board. These people are those who have expressed interest, have demonstrated leadership and commitment to the Temple or have demonstrated leadership and commitment to other community causes. 3. The President determines from the expiring positions how many are available in consultation with the Board members whose terms are expiring as well as any vacancies that may have arisen. 4. The President reviews the nominations and cross references them with gap areas on the Board. The President then invites individuals to join the Board for a full or partial term (depending on the vacancy they are filling). 5. Once the individuals accept, they are included in the annual slate. 6. There is an opportunity to petition for a position on the Board of Trustees that is laid out in our By-Laws. No one petitioned this year. 7. Since the Board is uncontested, we do not need a paper vote and can accept the slate by oral vote when the time comes. This year, we have added a new Board member included in the slate: Ken Perlman -- Ken is the proud father of Ruby and Sadie and husband to Anastasia. Their family was attracted to SHM by the warm welcome to interfaith families, they stay at SHM for the education programs and community outreach. Professionally, Ken is the Managing Director at CultureSync, a locally based consulting firm specializing in leadership effectiveness, culture change, change management and team performance. Ken will be a great asset to our leadership team. The slate was voted on and passed unanimously. *A change occurred after the meeting that has left one position opened. Per the by-laws of the Congregation, the Co-Presidents will fill this position. This is to be completed in June (however, after the deadline for this article.) During our Board installation at Services on July 14, 2017, we will thank our outgoing members, but we want to acknowledge all their contributions over the years. Many thanks to Karen Brutman and Marty Hart who are stepping off the board this year. They have all been dedicated to the synagogue in so many ways and we are grateful to their contributions to our Board of Trustees. Marty has been the coordinator of all our Shabbat greeters and is the personification of warmth and friendliness that makes our congregation so special. Karen has been involved Beth Carroll & Rachel Harman Temple Co-Presidents in our congregation in so many ways. From her involvement in the education committee to the gala, every event is made more grand and successful when Karen is involved. We know they will both continue to be an active presence at SHM. We hope you will all join us for Shabbat services and installation on July 14th. Budget: Heath Liner presented the temple budget which was voted on to accept and passed unanimously. If you were unable to attend the meeting and would like to see a copy of the budget, please contact the Temple office. Building Project Update: We hope you are taking advantage of the updates in the Ma alot and pictures on Facebook and Memeni to see the amazing progress we have made since our last meeting. Since May 2016, there have been terrific accomplishments along with some challenges to overcome. As a reminder, last year at this time, we were in the process of signing our agreement with the architect and were at approximately 50% of the Design phase of the program. We had selected the construction management firm and were beginning to get them involved in the estimation Continued on page 12 6 JULY 2017 MEMORY MITZVAH MENTSCH MAKING MAKING MEANING A LIFETIME OF BELONGING JULY

5 FROM OUR ASSISTANT RABBI Rabbi Sarah DePaolo Assitant Rabbi The Jaffe Family Rabbinic Chair Shalom, Congregation Shir Ha-Ma alot from your new assistant rabbi! I look forward to meeting each of you in the coming days, weeks, and months. Until then, I want to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself, both personally and professionally. Although I have spent the last five years studying to become a rabbi, in fact I have been working towards this goal for much longer. I grew up in a congregation where social justice and the value of tikkun olam (the Jewish mission to heal the world) were a priority. After graduating from Vassar College, I began working in local and national politics, as I tried in my small way to contribute to the eternal mission to make the world a little bit better. However, a sense of greater fulfilment was often missing from my work in politics. So I looked to my Jewish heritage and began to seriously consider becoming a rabbi. During the years before entering Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR), I worked as the executive assistant for the CEO of a large Jewish nonprofit in New York. My time there was invaluable, as I learned about many of the discussions of great concern to the Jewish world. Among them, demographics, membership, and building communities of belonging. Then, in rabbinical school, I took my education and these varied experiences and built upon them as a rabbinic intern at Columbia/Barnard Hillel and at SHALOM, SHM Temple Shaaray Tefila, a large suburban Reform congregation in Northern Westchester. I hope to bring to SHM all the education and skills that I have developed over the years from these different places and people that I have had the honor of working with and learning from. I am so excited to be a part of your warm and caring community, as it goes through the exciting transition in creating a new space for worship, education, and coming together. In March, when I came out to visit and interview, I quickly saw and felt that SHM was a very special congregation, and I am grateful and very excited to be joining you. On a personal note, some of you may already know that just a few weeks after my ordination from HUC-JIR, and very shortly before beginning my time with you, I got married! My husband, David Bernstein, and I are both lifelong New Yorkers. We grew up in the suburbs of New York City, both graduated from schools in New York state, and began our relationship as adults living in Manhattan. Though we loved our home in New York, we have always talked about living in another place, and are very much looking forward to learning as much as there is to know about our new home in California. We love good food and exploring. As we get settled, we hope you will share with us some of your favorite haunts in and around Irvine and what you love about the area. As I was applying to congregations this past winter, I shared the story of the tallit clips I found a few years ago. These clips symbolize for me how I see myself as a rabbi for a community. They have the words Choshen Mishpat Breastplate of Decision imprinted on them in Hebrew and represent the special breastplate that Moses s brother, Aaron, wore when he performed his duties as High Priest. Below the printed words are twelve little stones, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. When I wear the clips, I feel that I carry the Jewish people close to my heart. The clips remind me that I represent all of you, and impel me as a Rabbi to truly know my community so that I can better serve as a spiritual guide. In the next weeks let us take every opportunity to introduce ourselves as our paths begin to cross at programs, services and events. And I hope you will share with me your stories as we get to know one another during this time of transition. It will be my honor to carry your names as my community of Israel close to my heart. Heather Rosenthal Religious School Principal The Alpert-Waldman Family Education Chair This summer, our education team is busy working on creating an engaging, interactive and fun Jewish learning experience for our students this fall. One of these engaging new programs we are implementing will be with our 4th through 6th graders in their Hebrew instruction. This new program is aptly named, Hebrew in Harmony, because it uses the power of music to engage students in prayer. Hebrew in Harmony is unique in that it has several different components that assist students to learn their prayers. Not only does it focus on teaching different melodies to our prayers, but more importantly, students will gain personal meaning to the prayers that they are learning. They will be learning the meaning to root words found in the prayers. The 3-year curriculum features top Jewish musicians and incorporates movement, dance, arts, videos and a digital learning experience. Our 4th through 6th graders will also receive a license to explore their prayers at home, while they can practice, read and explore the prayers that they are learning in class. Behrman House, the publisher of Hebrew in Harmony, wrote a great article featuring Shir Ha-Ma alot and it can be found on our website. 7 Presidents from page 7 process. Fast forward a year we ve held our ceremonial ground breaking just prior to High Holy Days in September We completed the designs and structural drawings, submitted to the city and received our approved demolition and building permits. Demolition is complete and we have begun to pour footings and prepared framing in the renovated building. We have had a few setbacks while we made considerable progress in the demolition process and getting important vendors identified and locked down like steel and grading; we were not able to come to agreement with our original construction company Oltmans, and regrouped to vet and select a new company, KCS West to work with on our project. Our team worked with our Project Management company, Gafcon, to continue the progress on the project while working through the details of onboarding a new contractor. Rain and changing vendors has caused a bit of delay. An overly optimistic schedule prepared by our original contractor contributes to a significant change in our plans for moving in: we are now looking at being in the renovated building by the start of school August 31, 2017 and in our new building by February 1, We plan to use our renovated building, with its new chapel as much as possible for services and events to reduce the amount of wandering for our congregation. With the new building not being ready until February 2018, we do plan to hold High Holy Days at the Mormon Church on Lake Street in Irvine. We are so grateful for the Mormon community s continued hospitality and generosity! Rabbi Steinberg has been in touch with all Bar/Bat Mitzvah families that are affected and they have been gracious and understanding. We very much appreciate it. Our intention, provided we can, is to hold Friday night services in our newly renovated Atrium from September until Feb, when we can use our new sanctuary. The budget for the building has increased due to additional contingencies and overtime in the KCS West plan. KCS West budgets contingency at the line level and then overall for the project. We also have a shared contingency that they will benefit from as a result of meeting their commitments from a budgetary perspective. If they do not dig into a 2% contingency component, we will split that savings with them. What does this mean from a bottom line? The budget in November was $12,642 million including $834k of contingency. The current budget is $12,917mil including $893k of top line contingency (with varying contingencies at the line level depending on the trade and status of work). We are also prepared to authorize up to $200k of overtime, if needed, to get into the facilities at the times planned. This is more than we had hoped when we started this project all those years ago the $10m that we had discussed back in May 2014 when we were talking about our dream at that time without the details we have today the architectural plans, the construction costs, project management fees, contingencies, etc. We have already raised close to $10m in pledges and plan to continue with the fundraising until the project budget is covered by pledges. In addition, some improvements to our existing building will be paid for from our current Building fund $422k. These are items that we would have had to pay anyway even without a major building project. There are still many wonderful opportunities for naming big and small, so please contact Rabbi Steinberg, Ken Bassman or Bob Yonowitz if you want to talk about how you can help us meet our goal quickly. The Finance Committee has identified our lender Plaza Bank for the bridge temporary loan to cover the period between pledges and completion of pledges. We have had preliminary conversations with Plaza about our plans, the budget, pledges to date, cash flow and other key details. With our revised and refined plan, we are beginning our discussions about underwriting. Some Highlights of Next Year: Despite all the wandering we have done this year out of our building, our congregation has remained a vibrant and active community. All our committees have found creative places to meet and hold events. The planning for next year is well underway. Nashim, our Women s group, is busy planning a full year of events which will include a welcome brunch for our new Rabbi, coordination of a walking group, an Art event in time for Chanukah and of course our annual Women s Seder, along with regular girls night out events. Our Brotherhood is looking forward to being back inside the building for sale of bagels and coffee in the Fall. After the success of their first men s retreat last year they are looking forward to planning a retreat again in the coming year. TVT has been a welcoming home away from home over this past school year. Our kids have loved the playground and the wiggle chairs, but we are all anxious to get back to our newly remodeled classrooms. Heather Rosenthal (Religious School Principal) and Rabbi Lewis along with our very active education committee have been hard at work making sure our school program is meeting the needs of all our children and providing an environment that optimizes their Jewish learnings, friendships and relationships. Our Hebrew curriculum will have a new and engaging approach that we think our kids will love. A home technology component is sure to engage the kids and parents alike. This coming year will also see our family retreat on the calendar again. Be sure to save Martin Luther King weekend for this biennial event. It is a great community and family bonding weekend that we don t want you to miss. These are just a few of the many opportunities for involvement in the coming year. Keep your eye out for the new program book which will come out in early Fall and provide information on all the wonderful programming planned for the year. Our current year is still busy as ever, our theme of Celebrating Faith has been filled with enlightening speakers and programming continue over the next few months as well. June was Rabbi Lewis last month with SHM we have been blessed to have Rabbi Lewis with us for the past 6 years. She has been a leader in our congregation and shepherded our school with warmth and thoughtfulness. She brought us spiritual guidance through prayer and Mussar. As much as she will be missed, we are excited for Rabbi Lewis and her family as they embark on this new adventure. Temple Menorah is gaining a true mensch. Looking forward, in July, we are welcoming a new Assistant Rabbi to our congregation. Rabbi Sarah DePaolo joins us from New York, having been ordained at the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion this month. She is making a lot of change in her life as she also got married to David Bernstein just a couple weeks after ordination. Together they are joining our SHM family this summer. Rabbi DePaolo has wonderful experience in congregational life, including leading torah study, teaching in religious school, spending time at Jewish summer camps and working with Hillel students. We will have many opportunities to welcome Rabbi DePaolo and her husband into our community in the late summer and early fall. We know they will fit in well with our warm and welcoming SHM family. Thank you for all your continued support and involvement in our SHM community. Please let us know if you have any questions about the building, programing, ways to get involved, etc. Shalom. 8 Cantor Shikler from page 4 enemy aircraft down. What a feeling! I ll never forget it, looking up and only seeing jets heading into Egypt and no Migs coming our way. My brother in law Uri was with the tanks ahead of us. We saw and smelled the havoc they caused and drove through the openings they made for us. Sharon planned the attack three days before the war broke out. Arik decided to conduct a night strike that will center on the taking over the fortified trenches and bunkers of the Abu Ageila intersection, a key to the whole Sinai in its East part closest to Israel. From there the road to the heart of Sinai would be open. He said that the Egyptians don t like to fight at night and they don t enjoy hand to hand combat, and we are good at both of them. First, we were to take over the outside positions and continue engaging other Egyptian positions to fool them about the direction of the main effort. Engineers moved after the tanks to clear the road for the busses with the soldiers. Artillery followed them and than our command group and the soldiers. We got to Tarat Um Basis without any casualties from the Egyptian artillery. From there we started going west on foot in very deep sand dunes. It was late afternoon and the enemy s artillery found our location and shells started falling as we marched knee deep in sand, heavy with gear, ammo, personal weapon and heavy radios. Every time a shell would whistle coming in we d dive to the sand and listen to the shrieking of the flying shrapnel. The physical part of the eight mile hike was exhausting. Luckily the Egyptians didn t adjust the shells explosion and they were triggering under the ground in the sand. One of my men, Yehudah, was holding a picture of his wife and kids and talking to it every time we dove. He was panicking and out of control. I gave him an order to go back to our trucks. He was afraid to get lost so I told him to follow our footsteps in the sand. Moving the artillery closer to Abu Ageila would insure more precise shelling of the target. At the same time we were moving to the side of the bunkered complex our tanks engaged their tanks and a blockade was established by our troops from the south so no help could come from there. Similar blocks were established in the east too. As night was coming, paratroopers of Dani Matt were flown by helicopters behind the target so they will hike and attack the part of the Egyptian artillery from behind. Our job was to pour into the trenches, one battalion to a trench and clean it up, advancing and shooting from close range. Each trench was three miles long and there were three of them spaced one mile apart with the main road crossing them from north to south in the middle. It was dark now except for the occasional light bomb (Phosphorus). Our artillery was firing to mark the target for all of us. We were lying on our bellies on top of a wide dune looking down at the valley below. Any moment the enemy cannons can find us and the order to move is not there yet. I saw one of our Sherman tanks get hit on the road below us. The tank started burning and I counted five crew members jumping out and running out of there before it exploded. In the communication we hear Gen Gavish asking Arik to wait with the infantry and major tank attack to the next day so we can get some help from the air force not yet free from its own battles. Sharon who trusted his commanders and soldiers preferred a night fight and rejected the suggestion. He gave the order to charge! Our artillery lit up the place earlier by shooting 4000 shells in about half an hour. Because our artillery used a technique called rolling Carpet they were supposed to shell areas in front of us as we advanced in the trench, but Kuti asked them to stop so we can isolate their from the Egyptian fire on the same target. All I remember after Kuti said Go! at 11:15 p.m. was running shooting and giving Kuti the handset when he needed it. I saw tracers coming right at me and flaring out as they reached close. I was amazed I wasn t hit. I heard others getting injured and falling down. I pushed forward, running behind Kuti and shooting my Uzi. After midnight we got to the main road and the Nahal soldiers continued to clear the trenches and bunkers to the south and Kuti asked Sharon to send the Division Engineering Core to clear the main artery so that the tanks can pass and join the infantry. That took a long time and around 3:30 four tanks passed through to fight the enemy s tanks. One lone large caliber Egyptian cannon was firing in our direction every 60 seconds. I guess the paratroopers missed this one. After a while you get used to it. The whole battle ended at 4 a.m. Even the lone cannon was silent. We were seated outside the trench on a ledge looking at the helicopters loading our injured soldiers and the dead. It was hard to watch. The victory was complete. It was the first time combining successfully multiple tank and infantry units in sync, supported by Engineers artillery and air while tricking the enemy and surprising them. Considered one of the best victories in Zahal s history and taught in military institutes around the world. It had a critical influence on the entire Sinai campaign. We got orders to continue to El Arish on the Mediterranean coast where we settled into the governor s campus. Four entertainers (Theatre Club Quartet) came to do a show for us and begged me to take them to the Suez Canal after the show. I took them all on my Jeep with several Gerri cans of gas and some snacks and water and we drove south. We saw many unarmed Egyptian soldiers, barefoot, walking to the canal. One of them, a heavyset man asked me to give him a ride. I asked him where his commanders are, he says they took the truck and escaped. I asked him how come he didn t go on the truck. He did, but they pushed him down. The canal was breathtaking and unfortunately nobody had a camera and we drove back to El Arish. Sadly we had 43 dead and they had 2,000 on the other side. It took two more wars and many more casualties before Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty that has remained in place for the last 38 years. Fifty years after this war, we still hold hope that the Arab nations will learn that you can t beat us on the battlefield, and that new alliances in that region will bring peace to the land once and for all.
