The Festivals & Jesus (How to Worship: Festivals) Leviticus 23
The grace of God motivates joyous celebration.
Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. 21 And Miriam sang to them: "Sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea." (Exo 15:20-21) 20
1Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! 2 Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! 3 Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! 4 Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! 5 Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! 6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD! (Psa 150)
King David leaping and dancing before the LORD I will celebrate before the LORD. 22 I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor." (2Sa 6:16, 21-22)
Jesus celebrates. Wedding feast in Cana (John 2).
Why Celebrate? 1. We have something to celebrate Grace! 2. Celebration keeps us holy.
Point of interpretation. Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. Col. 2:16-17
Cross is central to the Bible. Old Testament New Testament
The Festivals (Lev. 23)

Festivals of Leviticus Sabbath the basis of festivals. 1. Passover 2. Unleavened Bread 3. First Fruits 4. Pentecost 5. Trumpets 6. Atonement 7. Tabernacles
Sabbath (vv. 1-4). The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, These are the appointed feasts of the LORD that you shall proclaim as holy convocations; they are my appointed feasts. 3 "Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work. It is a Sabbath to the LORD in all your dwelling places. 4 "These are the appointed feasts of the LORD, the holy convocations, which you shall proclaim at the time appointed for them.
Sabbath (vv. 1-4). 1. Holy Celebration: appointed feasts & sacred assemblies.
Sabbath (vv. 1-4). 1. Holy Celebration: appointed feasts & sacred assemblies. 2. Celebrate regularly. A. Weekly Sabbath B. Corresponds to agricultural year.
The 7th commemorates God s perfect work Every 7th day is a holy sabbath. Every 7th year is a Sabbath year. After 7, sabbath years (7th years) is a Jubilee. 7 feasts in Lev. 23 = 7 days of rest. Passover is on the 14th (2 x 7) Unleavened Bread is for the next 7 days. Pentecost is after 7 7-day periods. The 7th month is for Spring festivals. 7 days for Tabernacles.
Sabbath (vv. 1-4). 1. Holy Celebration: appointed feasts & sacred assemblies. 2. Celebrate regularly. A. Weekly Sabbath B. Corresponds to agricultural year. 3. Celebrate where you live (vv. 14, 17, 21, 31).
Sabbath (vv. 1-4). 1. Holy Celebration: appointed feasts & sacred assemblies. 2. Celebrate regularly. A. Weekly Sabbath B. Corresponds to agricultural year. 3. Celebrate where you live (vv. 14, 17, 21, 31). 4. Sabbath is for mankind.
Sabbath was made for man (Mark 2:27). 1. Sabbath provides rest. 2. Sabbath reminds us of creation, before the fall. 3. Sabbath renews our devotion.
Passover & Unleavened Bread (vv. 5-8). In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight, is the LORD's Passover. 6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD; for seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. 7 On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall not do any ordinary work. 8 But you shall present a food offering to the LORD for seven days. On the seventh day is a holy convocation; you shall not do any ordinary work." 5
Passover & Unleavened Bread (vv. 5-8). 1. Reminder of the Exodus. 2. Messiah is our Passover. 3. Leaven is our sin.
Passover & Unleavened Bread (vv. 5-8). Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. (1Co 5:6-8 ESV) 6
Firstfruits (vv. 9-14). And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 10 "Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest, 11 and he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, so that you may be accepted. On the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it 14 And you shall eat neither bread nor grain parched or fresh until this same day, until you have brought the offering of your God: it is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 9
Firstfruits (vv. 9-14). 1. Acknowledgment that God provides all we need. 2. Faith in harvest to come. 3. Jesus is firstfruits of resurrection (1 Cor. 15:20-23).
Pentecost (vv ). "You shall count seven full weeks from the day after the Sabbath Then you shall present a grain offering of new grain to the LORD 21 And you shall make a proclamation on the same day. You shall hold a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work. It is a statute forever in all your dwelling places throughout your generations. 22 "And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, nor shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the LORD your God." (vv. 15, 16, 21-22) 15
Pentecost (vv ). 1. Proclaims grace to the unworthy (vv ). 2. Outpouring of the Spirit was during Pentecost (Acts 2). 3. Beginning of the Church Age.

Trumpets (vv ). And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 24 "Speak to the people of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe a day of solemn rest, a memorial proclaimed with blast of trumpets, a holy convocation. 25 You shall not do any ordinary work, and you shall present a food offering to the LORD." 23
Trumpets (vv ). 1. Rest & Renewal after 4 months of working. 2. Messiah will return with the sound of a trumpet (1 Thess 4:16-18).
Atonement (vv ). And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 27 "Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the LORD. 28 And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God. (vv ) 26
Atonement (vv ). 1. A time for self-evaluation. 2. If Trumpets is rapture, then Atonement is second coming.
Tabernacles (vv ). And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 34 "Speak to the people of Israel, saying, On the fifteenth day of this seventh month and for seven days is the Feast of Booths to the LORD. 35 On the first day shall be a holy convocation; you shall not do any ordinary work. 36 For seven days you shall present food offerings to the LORD. On the eighth day you shall hold a holy convocation and present a food offering to the LORD. It is a solemn assembly; you shall not do any ordinary work 43 that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God." 33
Tabernacles (vv ). 1. Reminder that God dwelt with Israel after Exodus. 2. Jesus tabernacled with us (John 1:14). 3. Church is tabernacle of Spirit (1 Cor 6:19). 4. Jesus is the tabernacle in Heaven (Rev 21:3, 22).
Let the grace of God motivate joyous celebration.
